ZIGGY’S PROBE: You may think: “Yes I know it’s a good thing to read (pray from) my Bible, but it’s a big Book and I don’t know where to start.” ZIGGY’S TAKE: FIND YOUR BIBLE and select Psalm 66:1-4….about in the “middle” of the Old Testament. Read (and pray) twice this small bit. Give praise to God and then select some oth-er Psalm. See…that’s all there is to it!

  • From the Desk Of Fr. John Sorry about last Sunday…it was the first time for me in 40 years that we were not able to have Sunday Mass. The ice is just too treach-erous for anybody. Both Deacon Fernando and I discovered that…when we crashed against the curb…completely out of control on Ostle hill. We could not even get out of the car because of the ice and the slope of the hill. One and a half hours later the city salt truck came by…and the won-derfully helpful driver brought extra salt to put un-der our wheals to help get us up the hill…Thank God. However, my car is damaged and unable to be driven…curbs are not nice and cushy when you hit them…lesson learned?! Wow,…that was quick. We waited patiently and the Lord provided great workers to finish the job. What am I talking about…well…the replacement of the marble wall at the St. Joseph altar. Thanks be to God that there was not more damage…which would have required extensive repair work. The men were able to mend the bro-ken marble slabs, replace, and secure them safely. There is some tuck-pointing work on the exterior yet to be done…but the problem area that caused moisture to seep into the wall has been corrected long before we fixed the interior. Yeah! You may notice some new cameras in the church area…different wires here and there…which is all part of the security and new locking system being installed. Someone commented…that it was too bad it had to come to this…which is true. But we are very exposed here…and the safety of our children and all the rest of us is of primary concern. Thank you for your understand-ing. Of course there will be changes in our enter-ing the church and gathering space…but we will get into that once it is all completed and we get our training on how it all works. Downstairs in church looks really good… (The kids call it the ‘old basement.’) There are a few more things we need to do…but this will help a great deal to make it look presentable and well lit…fresh and bright. The new ‘chillers’…the cooling towers for the HVAC system have been ordered. They will arrive within a week or so. The decision as to

their placement has also been made…leaving the old units in place for now…until the new ones can be connected. That will require electrical as well as piping adjustments. The electrical equip-ment might take a bit longer to arrive…but we hope we can get them in before the cooling sea-son arrives. Divine Mercy Senior Living Community…project and campaign are moving along very well indeed. As of last Sunday, we were at over 70% of our goal. But we all need to take this opportunity to help provide for our seniors. They deserve a great and wholesome place to live in their senior years…with a Catholic atmosphere and faith nurturing experiences. We all have a chance to pitch in and help our SSPP parish reach its goal! The scene on the Sea of Galilee/Gennesaret gives us the call and commission of Jesus’ first disciples. The one who stands out in this passage is Simon Peter…our patron saint. It was his boat that Jesus first stepped into…and the one whom Jesus instructed to put out into deep water. The first purpose was for Jesus to be more effective in His ‘teaching’ the people. The second part was to help these new recruits to learn what it meant for them to follow Jesus…a miracle that explained and demonstrated the sig-nificance of their new mission. Jesus simply said to Peter… ‘Do not be afraid…from now on you will be catching men.’ We see the crowds gather-ing around Jesus…He ministered to them…now He wants His disciples to do the same. That is the message for us…missionary disciples! Jesus was on the mountain praying…then He selects from the many following Him 12 disciples to be the core group and leaders of the new com-munity. As they come down from the mountain He gives them and the people instruction about who is to be included in this ‘gathering in’ to the kingdom. Jesus had already announced that His mission was broader than the people expected… ‘The Spirit of the Lord is upon me…to bring glad tidings to the poor.’ Now He clearly begins the fulfillment of that mission… ‘Blessed are you who are poor, for the kingdom of God is yours.’

  • 1 John 4:11-12, 19 Beloved, if God so loved us, we also must love one another. No one has ever seen God. Yet, if we love one another, God remains in us, and his love is brought to perfection in us. We love because He first loved us.

By Brad Hill No matter what we do, no matter how we have sinned, God’s love for us remains unchanging. “Love it was that made us and Love it was that saved us…” as the hymn says. The reason is simple: “God IS love.” God cannot not love – if he did, He would no longer be God.

All our loving then is simply an opening of our heart, a return of the love that God has first shown us. As some-one once said, God’s love is like electricity. God’s love is only in us when it is passing through us. It can never stop with ourselves. When we keep that love to ourselves, it dies. When we let the love of God flow through us, we may be creating a “God Moment” for someone else.

What is a “God Moment?” A God Moment is an unex-pected encounter with the ordinary; an unexpected moment that happens precisely at the time it is need-ed. It often involves an encounter with someone, but not necessarily. Some may say that these are ran-dom occurrences that could happen to anyone or that it was simply good luck that things turned out like they did. I prefer to believe that God has had a hand in it. It is the love of God working through others. I call these God Moments, or as Deacon Jimmy called them in his Homily a few weeks ago—God Incidenc-es.

That person who showed up and said the right thing at the right time may have started his or her day col-laborating with God’s graces. As Matthew Kelly says, “We can wake each day and joyfully share God’s truth, goodness, and beauty with everyone who crosses our path.” And when we do that, we may be

encountering someone and saying or doing just the right thing at the just the right time. Later when that person recalls the incident, they may realize God must have had a hand in this.

Again, Matthew Kelly says: “Holy moments come in all shapes and sizes, but the great majority of them are small and anonymous.”

    • Go out of your way to do something for your spouse that you would rather not do.*

    • Control you temper, even if you are fully justified in los-ing it.*

    • Encourage someone, coach someone, praise some-one, affirm someone.*

    • Be patient with that per-son who drives you crazy.*

    • Ask someone who seems distressed if they need a hug, or better yet a prayer.

    • Say this prayer at the be-ginning of each day: Lord, tell me where You want me to go, let me meet who You want me to meet, tell me what You want me to say, and keep me out of Your way.

*Matthew Kelly—The Biggest Lie in the History of Christianity

Opportunities to create Holy Moments are every-where. And every Holy Moment where God’s love flows through me can be someone else’s, “Wow, this is a God Moment.”

God’s love is available in abundance to anyone who opens their heart to Him. But that love, too, must continue to flow out beyond me to everyone I meet. It is impossible to separate God’s love for me and my love for others. We cannot have one without the oth-er.

(Brad Hill serves on a number of parish ministries including the team that designs and implements our parish half-day retreats.)

Your Holy Moment May Be Someone’s God Moment
