ooper Power Systems introduces a revolution indistri bution switchgear. The new three-phase,
microprocessor-controlled NOVA recloser utilizes
advanced polymer and vacuum technologies to increasevalue for distribution systems. Kyle has combined solidcycloaliphatic-epoxy polymer-encapsulated vacuuminterrupters with a reliable, lightweight operatingmechanism which utilizes a magnetic actuator to providea lifetime of trouble-free recloser operation.
This state-of-the-art design completely replaces liquid andgas dielectric media. It is the maintenance-free alternativein distribution system protection. The NOVA recloser isthe shape of things to come .
Superior Solid InsulationProvides Maintenance-Free andEnvironmentally-Safe OperationThe key to the NOVA recloser is the successfulcombination of two technologies: cycloaliphatic-epoxyencapsulation and the high-performance Kyle vacuuminterrupter.
All existing insulation systems require seals to defendagainst environmental exposure. Life and maintenance aredetermined by these sealing systems. When breached, thedielectric is compromised and must be repaired orreplaced.
As an oil alternative, SF6 gas introduces new and growingconcerns about its effects on the atmosphere. SF6 has anextremely long atmospheric lifetime, estimated between800 to 10,000 years, and has a global warming potential24,900 times that of carbon dioxide. As a result, SF6 isamong the most potent of greenhouse gases. NOVA’ssolid insulation construction eliminates all concern by itsenvironmentally-friendly design. The future is green withNOVA.
Solid dielectric insulation eliminates the need for
insulating gas or liquid, thereby greatly reducing recloserlife-cycle maintenance costs. There is no longer the needto monitor SF6 gas pressure or oil levels, to filter orreplenish the dielectric, to take special precautions whenhandling the dielectric during maintenance, or to worryabout environmental regulations regarding disposal of toxic or environmentally-unfriendly materials.
Kyle Advances Filled EpoxyDesign for Outdoor ApplicationsFilled epoxy casting systems have been successfully utilizedas insulating material in high and low voltage indoor
applications for over 30 years. Recent materialadvancements provide durable environmental propertieswhich enhance epoxy success for outdoor applications.State-of-the-art manufacturing techniques also bring keyimprovements in absorption of elastic energy, resistance tocracking, and crack propagation.
NOVA Cycloaliphatic Epoxy Advantages
Surface TrackingNOVA’s exceptional ability to resist electrical trackingreduces both flashovers and the associated cost of repairs. Results of the industry-standard incline plane test (per
ASTM D2303) revealed that cycloaliphatic epoxy is 50percent more resistant to tracking than polyurethane. Inaddition, independent testing by Arizona State University(per IEC 815) confirmed that NOVA cycloaliphaticepoxy is highly resistant to contaminants and resistedtracking and flashovers under extreme pollution levels.
HydrophobicityNOVA cycloaliphatic epoxy maintains excellenthydrophobicity (a property characterized by waterbeading into isolated drops) and is highly resistant tomoisture absorption. Hydrophobicity prevents continuous
sheets of water from forming leakage current paths which, when heated by continuous flow, create a dry band paththat deteriorates the creepage withstand level.
Ultraviolet ResistanceNOVA cycloaliphatic epoxy resists the damage caused byultraviolet radiation. Over 25 years of proven experienceof cycloaliphatic epoxy in harsh climates confirms thatNOVA maintains a smooth, self-cleansing, unblemishedsurface with low-adhesion to contaminants when exposedto ultraviolet radiation.
Tensile Strength
NOVA modules are tough and non-fragmenting as theypossess outstanding tensile and flexural strengthcharacteristics. A 12-gauge shotgun test supports the non-fragmenting performance and displays the ability of NOVA to thwart vandalism by successfully passing ahigh-potential withstand test.
Combining advanced vacuum technology, a sophisticatedsolid epoxy insulation system, and a proprietary,dielectrically-sound active component, Cooper PowerSystems now provides a non-oil, non-gas, solid insulationsystem destined to be the shape of things to come .

Kyle Leads Vacuum Technologyyle revolutionized the protection of high voltagecircuits with the first commercially-successful
recloser, the Kyle Type H. Today, many Kyle reclosers
incorporate vacuum technologies which have advanced thedurability and extended the application base for vacuumproducts. Kyle’s constant development effort represents adetailed understanding of arc control, thermal loads, andcontact erosion. Each is pivotal to the successfulapplication of vacuum to solid dielectric systems.
The patented axial-magnetic field vacuum interrupter, designed and manufactured by Kyle DistributionSwitchgear‚ is the most advanced vacuum interrupterdesign in the world. Rely on Kyle vacuum interrupters toprovide many years of dependable operation.
Axial-Magnetic Design• Provides fast, low-energy arc interruption• Ensures long contact and interrupter life• Experiences low mechanical stress while ensuring
maximum operating safety• Eliminates the production of toxic byproducts
Innovative Design
Many vacuum interrupters employ radial-magnetic fieldcontacts. These use slots that are machined into the contactstructure to affect the direction of current flow during arcinterruption in such a way as to induce a radial-magneticfield. This radial-magnetic field pushes the arc around thecircumference of the contact, minimizing wear in any onespot. Though this method is sufficient for low andmedium current density applications, higher current levelscan cause significant contact erosion or shield burn-out.
Kyle interrupters employ axial-magnetic contacts. Slots aremachined into the contact support structure producing acoil that induces a magnetic field along the axis of theinterrupter. This axial-magnetic field keeps the arc in an
easier-to-interrupt diffuse mode, resulting in less arc powerthat needs to be dissipated. Furthermore, Kyle’s patentedVSAM design uses the entire contact surface, resulting infar less contact erosion. Less power to dissipate means lowthermal stress and longer life. Consequently, Kyle isuniquely qualified to encapsulate vacuum interrupters.
World-Class ProcessElectrically, the heart of the interrupter is the contactmaterial and structure. During the interruption of highcurrent, the surface of the contacts can reach its meltingtemperature, liberating any residual gases or contaminants
into the vacuum.
At Kyle, high purity chrome powder is analyzed, pressedinto a porous disk, infiltrated with copper, and machinedinto contacts. After electro-polishing, parts are assembledin a contaminant-free Class 1000 clean room, then loadedinto a vacuum brazing furnace for final production. Allprocesses are certified to ISO 9001 quality standards.
Cooper Power Systems, Kyle Distribution Switchgear, manufactures the most advanced vacuum interrupter inthe world. Superior to oil interruption and radial-magnetic
field vacuum interruption (see duty cycle comparison), thepatented axial-magnetic field Kyle vacuum interruptersprovide the longest life of any vacuum interrupter in theindustry.

Vacuum Interruption
Vacuum interruption, used in NOVA reclosers, offersgreatly enhanced contact life. A single break on eachphase is accomplished by separating contacts inside thevacuum interrupter. All arcing is contained within the
vacuum envelope. Low-energy arc interruption, provided by axial-magnetic field technology, results infar less mechanical shock, extending the recloser’smechanical life.
Mechanism
The Kyle NOVA recloser meets and exceedsANSI/IEEE C37.60, as it is designed for a minimum of 10,000 operations. The mechanism is operated by amagnetic actuator, which uses a low-voltage powersource for operation. A fully-charged battery and trip
and close capacitors provide interrupter operation uponloss of control power. This feature provides the recloserwith dead-line operation capability–a requirement formany SCADA applications.
Magnetic Actuator
The heart of NOVA is a bi-stable linear actuator whichutilizes neodymium magnets, two opposing coils, aplunger, and a laminated frame. The magnetic actuator
provides a plunger holding force in excess of 136kilograms (300 pounds). It also permits a transfer of theplunger between two stable positions, by means of pulsed energy, to either of two opposing coils.
Advantages
Magnetic actuators provide several distinct advantageswhen utilized in a switchgear mechanism:
Latching – Mechanical latches are replaced by theactuator. Elimination of mechanical latches andassociated linkages leads to longer, trouble-freeoperation of the switchgear mechanism.
Response Time – The magnetic actuator is an electro-mechanical device capable of extremely fast responsetimes. This attribute is particularly advantageous forminimizing response and clearing time in providinginstantaneous reclose.
Size – The magnetic actuator is compact and requiresminimum mounting space. It’s overall dimensions are:20,3 cm x 17,8 cm x 11,4 cm (8 in. x 7 in. x 4.5 in.).
Power – A typical 8 amp-hour control battery hassufficient energy to provide hundreds of open-closeoperations in the absence of ac power.

The Shape of Things to ComeÉ
SWITCH VS. RECLOSER
Switch vs. Recloser
• By definition, switches and reclosershave basic differences in their appli-cation on a distribution system.
Switches are designed solely for exe-cuting load switching commands, while reclosers execute load switch-ing commands and autonomouslyinterrupt fault currents.
• This autonomous operation can beextended to the entire distributionfeeder, providing either a centralizedor decentralized approach.
Minimum Trip Sensitivity
• The use of a recloser on the distribu-tion system increases the ability tosense additional faults.
• Increased sensitivity and isolation oflower magnitude faults protects distri-bution line equipment, minimizes con-ductor burn down, and reduces thelikelihood of a temporary fault evolv-ing to a permanent fault.

Centralized
• Substation breaker is required for fault interruption.
• Entire distribution feeder requires a momentary outage.
• Centralized system with switches for fault isolationrequires 100% reliability of the communication system.
• Switches are to be opened during periods of de-ener-gized line, or load-break ratings.
• Communication and sectionalizing equipment costs
are required for operation.
Decentralized
• Multiple reclosers used on the distribution circuit.
• Only affected areas see momentary outage.
• No communication system is required for immediatefault isolation. Inherent system reliability isimproved due to multiple independent devices.
• Full maximum fault interrupting ratings provideincreased safety.
• Sectionalizing costs only.

The Shape of Things to ComeÉ
Momentary Outages
• More than 20 percent of utilities todaytrack momentary operations of“blinks.”
• Continual process operations, factoryautomation, and residential demandsrequire new enhancements to theapplication of distribution equipment.
• MAIFI and MAIFIE statistics arebecoming more common indices tomeasure momentary blinks.
• Traditional fault protection based onsubstation device (circuit breaker orrecloser) protection and lateral fusingis being replaced with the addition ofdistribution reclosers to provide faultprotection, minimizing substation tripsand momentary outages.
• Extensive flexibility in time-currentcurves, minimum trip values, andoperation sequences result in simpleinstallations to existing systems pro-viding trip coordination.
Cooper Power Systems Leads inDistribution Automation
• The economic evaluation of momen-tary outages indicates that the cost ofpurchasing a recloser is negligible for
application with industrial and com-mercial facilities.
• Cooper Power Systems is stronglycommitted to improving the reliabilityof the electric power industry.
• Technological advances, including thenewest microprocessor-based con-trols and solid insulation NOVA distrib-ution switchgear products representour investment in the future.
