Jabir (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Prophet (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) said, “For him who says: `Subhan-Allahi wa bi hamdihi’

(Allah is free from imperfection, and I begin with praising Him, and to Him), a palm-tree will be planted in Jannah.” [At-Tirmidhi].

How to use the ‘Reward Charts’:

Examples of what to include in your ‘Reward Charts’:

Think of behaviours you want to introduce, encourage or change.

Make and list and Categorise them; Day/night, manners, toilet training.

Add your list to the chart. Alternatively, display list next to the chart.

Get some short term rewards e.g., stickers (golden stars)

Print your Reward chart(s) on paper, card or photo-paper.

Display chart where visible; main room or room that it applies to.

Explain to them the reality of deeds; how all good and bad deeds are

recorded by Angels and that they don’t make mistakes. There is also a

greater reward from Allah.

When the child has achieved their reward:

1. Praise them and explain to them what they did good.

2. Let them either; place a sticker on the chart, tick the box, draw

a tally or colour in. (use different colours if using same chart for

multiple children.) Also, you can add more than 1 sticker per box.

3. When they completed a full row on the chart, reward them with

something small i.e. ‘Well done’ sticker.

What you need:

*You can start implementing ‘Time out’ from as young as 2 years old until the age of 7 if it’s still effective. As the

child matures, a different approach will be needed. More ‘space’ will be needed to calm down and properly discuss the

issue. Remember that the feeling of anger is normal but how one acts upon it is what matters.

Thousands of families use the Time out/Naughty Step technique with their children. Unfortunately, many families

are either getting it wrong or losing hope far too soon. To make the Time out work for you, simply read the following,

persevere, be patient and have trust in Allah .

Before Time Out:

1. Discuss and decide what house rules matter to you most and what inappropriate behaviours you want stopped.

2. Write them in a positive way e.g ‘Play nicely’ instead of ‘No fighting’

3. Don’t break/change the rules. This means you too because your child may feel cheated.

4. Remember be consistent and praise their efforts moderately.

5. Choose a suitable corner for Time out. Preferably a quiet place to reflect with no distractions.

Time Out Steps:

1. Give a warning at eye level – Before implementing time out, ONE warning must be given. (Make sure you use

your everyday tone of voice yet be firm). If they disobey this ONE warning, then proceed to ‘Time out’.

2. Time out - Explain the problem and walk away – No talking back to them. Ignore them, even if they act out.

3. Set a timer for ‘time out’ – 1 minute per their age (in years)

4. Once time out is over - Explain – why you put them in naughty corner.

5. Accept apology – let them apologise for what they did. If it included others, let them apologise to them too.

6. Conclude – With Hugs and Kisses. Forget it, move on.

Reminders:

Allah says: “To Allah belongs all that is in the heavens and all that is on the earth, and whether you disclose what

is in yourselves or conceal it, Allah will call you to account for it. Then He forgives whom He wills and punishes whom

He wills. And Allah is able to do all things.” (Quran. Surah 2, ayah 284)

The Prophet said: “When one of you becomes angry while standing, he should sit down. If the anger leaves him, well

and good; otherwise he should lie down.” (Sunan Abi Dawud, Sahih Albani)
