Copyright vs. Plagiarism

Page 2: Copyright vs. plagiarism

There is a confusion among the general

public about the difference between

copyright infringement and plagiarism.

Page 3: Copyright vs. plagiarism

Many believe that plagiarism deals with ethics and copyright infringement deals

with law.

Page 4: Copyright vs. plagiarism

According to Laura J. Murray,

“copyright infringement

is the use or reuse of words or

ideas without permission.”

Page 5: Copyright vs. plagiarism

Whereas plagiarism is using those words or ideas without

acknowledgement.

Page 6: Copyright vs. plagiarism

Most people tend to buckle down on copyright infringement laws in order

to discourage plagiarism

Page 7: Copyright vs. plagiarism

but if we learn how to correctly use and practice citation, the problem may

fix itself.

Page 8: Copyright vs. plagiarism

Murray states that citation practices need to be adopted in order for the use of plagiarism to be diminished

Page 9: Copyright vs. plagiarism

and she argues that copyright law

hinders that practice.

Page 10: Copyright vs. plagiarism

Almost all of us can agree that plagiarism is wrong

Page 11: Copyright vs. plagiarism

but there is a growing population of people

who

don’t have a

problem with sharing

information.

Page 12: Copyright vs. plagiarism

Jay David Bolter believes the transition

into a creative commons should be embraced.

Page 13: Copyright vs. plagiarism

He believes that the

“fragmentation of information”

would be a good thing for

society to experience.

Page 14: Copyright vs. plagiarism

Brett Gaylor expresses that copyright laws are too strict

Page 15: Copyright vs. plagiarism

and that people should adopt the belief in a creative commons for works in digital

literacy.

Page 16: Copyright vs. plagiarism

Research has become less thorough because of a fear that we will fail to cite someone correctly.

Page 17: Copyright vs. plagiarism

Murray suggests that if we practice citing works of digital literacy, research practices will improve.

Page 18: Copyright vs. plagiarism

Also, if we all learn how to properly cite

works of literature,

Page 19: Copyright vs. plagiarism

the problems with plagiarism should start to diminish.

Page 20: Copyright vs. plagiarism

If we take this advice, we may be able to make huge strides in research on problems that desperately need answers.
