Thank you to all the individuals who helped to make this yearrsquos Blue Christmas Worship Service such a meaningful time of blessing From those who helped prepare and hand out the 400 Hershey Kiss bags to individuals within our community to the setup and tear down teams to the chime choir members readers greeters prayer team members and other participants who embodied Godrsquos compassionate love thank you You all truly touched the lives of others with the healing of Christ through your sincere acts of discipleship

Finding Our Greatest Strength In Our Weakness One of the most impactful life lessons I learned came from a Greek student I shared an apartment with while living in Scotland He was a great guy with an incredible sense of humor who loved good food and who worked incredibly hard Out of all the international students I shared the apartment with he by far worked the hardest I was surprised then when at the end of the first semester he shared with me the results of his exams They werenrsquot great Not in the least bit But he wasnrsquot upset In fact he seemed quite content by his grades which did not make sense to me Being good friends I asked him how he could be so content when he had worked so hard The response he gave revealed wisdom that still shapes the way I look at life

He said ldquoI came to University to learn I did not come to be tested on what I already knew I worked for every grade that I received and I now know far more than when I arrived three months ago I have achieved so much and I am proud of thatrdquo

From an early age I had come to believe that school was not about education I saw it as one big test that you needed to excel at in order to get ahead As a result I was hesitant to learn What I mean by this is that I did not feel free to try things that I did not believe I would be good at It was too much of a risk I was worried what would happen if I showed myself to be ldquoweakrdquo But sitting at the feet of my wise Greek friend I realized how foolish and limiting my perspective on education and life was and how it had trapped me from truly

learning growing and experiencing life From him I learned the value in being boldly ldquoweakrdquo so that in fact I may become far ldquostrongerrdquo and live life far more richly than I could otherwise ever be or do

As we begin our coaching relationship with Val Hastings this month I find much wisdom in the words of my Greek friend Over the next year there will be an incredible opportunity to learn to grow and to share in the community of faith in new ways Some of the things we will already know and will do quite good at Some of the things we will quite possibly be ldquoweakrdquo within But let us be bold in our weakness fearing not what we do not know but with curiosity and wonder seek to learn and grow that the kingdom of heaven may blossom all the more richly in our midst For I believe Jesus himself revealed that the kingdom of heaven comes through our weakness and our vulnerability

Or as Paul says ldquoGod chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong God chose what is low and despised in the world things that are not to reduce to nothing things that are so that no one might boast in the presence of Godhellip lsquoLet the one who boasts boast in the Lordrsquordquo (1 Corinthians 127-31)
