A $12,000 coat of heat insulating paint has saved theHunter Water Board $250,000 in air-conditioning costs atthe head office of the Hunter Water Board on Newcastle.Board engineers were faced with the problem of heat gainthrough a 660m2 200mm thick concrete slab roof covered withgalvanised steel. They examined the possibility of Insulating thesteel roof and the idea of using an Insulating paint was suggested. The Board’s head office was designed with six floors but onlythree have been constructed. The roof of the building will be thefloor of the next storey when the building is extended upwards. Alow pitched steel roof was constructed to waterproof the buildingwith less than half a metre clearance between the steel roof and theconcrete slab.By 3pm on summer afternoons the air conditioning wasbecoming overloaded as it could not cope with the heat beingtransmitted into the building through the steel roof and theconcrete slab.Building and Property Maintenance Coordinator David Rigbysaid “A short, term alternative was to upgrade the air conditioningsystem at a cost of $40.000. An upgrade would have only partlysolved the problem and the plant would have to be replaced witha larger, more energy intensive plant at a cost of $250.000.”The solution to the problem was to apply a coat of Insulpaint® tothe steel roof which reduced heat transfer through the concreteslab by 30%. The paint has reduced the load on the airconditioning plant which, with only routine maintenance, isexpected to remain in operation for another 15 to 20 yearswithout the need for an upgrade.

Testimonials from Satisfied Insulpaint® users.John Clegg, Director Onmivest Business Consultants.“We have now had our double storey residence and consultingoffice in Rossmoyne treated with Insulpaint® A500. The roof is astandard colour - Missouri Sky, and the upper storey walls areInsulpaint® Light Beige, specifically colour matched to the existingcolours, including the lower walls. The result has been entirely as you advised, and are a substantialimprovement. The internal building temperatures are ademonstrable reduction at the height of summer daytime, and arein excess of 12 degrees C. This is particularly evident in the upperstorey. This treatment has made a very real difference in our ability to workin this upper area of the house. Our layout and floor plan includesour consultancy office work area with two computing work stationsetc. This area had until recently required air conditioning duringsummer months to be turned on from 8.00 a.m. until usually 7.00p.m. Since roof refurbishing most days in the last few weeks despitefull summer sun and temperatures of 37C we have requiredminimal air conditioning usage and at times not at all.”

Glengarry Primary School saves on heating costsduring winter.“Before painting the building with your Insulpaint, I noticed animprovement in a number of conditions which made the roommore habitable for both myself and the students in the room.i) The room was noticeably cooler in summer and did not reach thevery hot temperatures of previous years.ii) The room was easier to heat during winter and retained the heatfor a longer time.iii) Heaters were able to be turned off at an earlier time as a suitabletemperature for the rooms was reached more quickly.iv) I noticed that to get the same heat as previous years into theroom I did not have to turn on all four heaters but only two.In my opinion I think that the painting of the demountable withyour insulating paint greatly improved the cooling and heatingretaining ability of the demountable.”

Bob Davis, Allsports Trophies..

“We have a large workplace situated close to the metal roof withonly a thin layer of standard insulation blanket. In anything morethan 24ºC weather the bottom layer of the insulation was hot totouch and constantly heated the interior, leading to oppressiveconditions. Despite the large aircon running flat out thetemperature upstairs often approached 40ºC in summer. Insulpainthas made a huge difference to the interior temperature. The surfaceof the insulation is now always cool to touch and aircon is hardlyused. The coating works exactly as you said it would and I amdelighted with the result.”Andrew Barnes,Owner Commercial Premises Rockingham.

“Thankfully I chose your product over competitors, although alittle more expensive, it more than blows away any results theycould expect. I now enjoy a unit radiating heat below ambienttemperature and with far better sound accoustics radiating out ofmy unit or from other units.”

Fantastic results“After one of the hottest PerthSummers on record we had tohave our Air-conditioningrunning flat out to make itbearable to work in our offices.Since having Insulpaintappliedwe just run it for a couple ofshort bursts each day on reallyhot days. the difference hasbeen astounding.”

Retired engineers at Whiteman Park raised money to Insulpaint® the hot sheds. After applying Insulpaint® the temperatures in the sheds were up to an averageof 8ºC+ cooler.

Hammersly Iron, Karratha saves up to 60%on power in their worker’s homes in 2001.

Elizabeth Street ShoppingCentre in Adelaide were havingdifficulties with their air-conditioning system beingoverloaded and not copingwith the heat. The engineers were called in toinvestigate the problem. WhenInsulpaint® was introduced tocoat the roof the results wereoutstanding. On the hottest days of theheatwave with the temperaturesof 35–45ºC the Insulpaintedroof temperature was measuredwith heat data loggers. Themaximum temperature in theroof space painted withInsulpaint® was only 35ºC. Theuncoated section of the roofwas 55ºC plus. The above temperature graphclearly shows the distinct

differences in coated anduncoated surfaces.

It is important to note thatthe entire roof space alreadyhad insulation installed andANTICON (silver foil)underneath the roof. It is quite clear Insulpaint® willwork better than conventionalinsulation on its own.

What’s more, the above trialproves that the air-conditioningsystem is running moreefficiently and cost-effectively.Also reducing the load on theair-conditioning will give alonger lifespan. After theseexceptional results the shoppingcentre management have nowbudgeted to coat the entire31,000m2 roof at ElizabethStreet Shopping Centre.

The company recorded savingsof 1000 units of power a monthon the in-house testing byHammersly Iron demonstratedthat by painting the roofs ofbuildings with Insulpaint® theywere able to dramatically reduceinternal building temperatures. There was a saving of 1000units of power usage a monthon the cost of air-conditioning.In addition to this, the lifespan

of the air-conditioning unitswere extended by up to 18%.The report also concluded thatgreenhouse gas savings over a 6 month period would be up to 5.3 tonnes of CO2 emissionsper home into the atmosphere. This equates to savings of 0.75kilos for each unit of powerproduced allowing HammerslyIron to reduce carbon emissionsand save money.

Test metal boxes were insulated using the different systems and setoutside in the sun. Temperature probes located inside the boxesmeasured the internal temperatures. It can be seen that theInsulpaint® treated box internal temperature was generally within3C of the ambient (external) temperature. This result was far betterthan both the fibreglass and polystyrene foam insulating systems.

Why Insulation is soimportant.Without insulation, your roofspace can act like a heat trap, heating up to 65ºC or more ona hot day. As it heats up the roofspace can hold and radiate heatdown through the ceiling andinto your home or business.Heat trapped during the day will continue to radiate heateven at night, making lifeuncomfortable for you, yourfamily and staff. To combat thisproblem most people simplyturn on the air conditioner, which can put a huge strain ontheir energy bill.

Facts about InsulationMany modern buildings containsome form of insulation whichcan be batts or loose fibres.Traditional insulation is mostlyinstalled above the ceiling, which does nothing to preventheat building up in the roofspace.

Insulpaint® is water-based, non-flammable, non-toxic insulatingcoating, which does not containhazardous fibres. It is strong,

cool in summer and warm inwinter, it also has acousticproperties which make it idealto reduce sound especially forcorrugated roofs such asColorbond. The diagram abovedemonstrates a university testcomparing standard Insualtionsused against Insulpaint®.Insulpaint® is effective bothsummer and winter and cankeep you comfortable.

Tony Sadlers was losing customers and staff were suffering due to excessiveheat, which during summer could reach up to 40ºC. After painting withInsulpaint®, internal temperatures were reduced to a very pleasant 28ºC,this has meant a big reduction in air-conditioning costs.

Insulpaint® wins National Energy Innovation Award in1988 for energy savings.

as being major suppliers toGovernment departments, largecommercial industries and theprivate sector.

Insulpaint® has been used tocool homes, factories, schools, churches and businesses for overtwenty two years and has beenindependently tested, andproven to be very effective inreducing internal temperatures.

flexible and resiliant and isguaranteed to work effectivelyfor the life of the product. By applying Insulpaint® to theexterior of the roof you canprevent heat entering the roofspace and can even makeexisting insulation work thatmuch more effectively.Prevention is always better thana cure. Furthermore, becausethe roof cavity is already coolerduring the day it doesn’tcontinually radiate heat into the house at night. Insulpaint® is available in 21standardcolours and can even betinted to many other colours. This makes it ideal forcommercial applications wherefirst impressions are soimportant. Insulpaint® can beapplied to large or small areasfrom small patios to largefactories and can even be used toinsulate walls which may beexposed to the sun for most ofthe day.How Insulpaint® worksInsulpaint® is a water based,high-quality paint that isimpregnated with a specialproprietary insulating ingredientcalled “ACRAD 8”. This is aunique plant based fibre thatgives the paint the ability toblock the transfer of heat andreduce heat loads withreductions of between 6ºC and14ºC or more. Insulpaint® works by blockingthe transmission of heat throughthe roof or walls. Insulpaint®

uses 100% Styrene Acrylic Resinbase, which is renowned forsuperior hardness, flexibility anddurability.

Insulpaint® is impervious topollution and extreme weatherIt will remain effective for thelife of the coating regardless ofgrime, dust and pollution.Insulpaint® is also water-proofand micro-porous which allowsthe substrate to breathe andavoid cracking in the masonry.

Along with its proven thermalproperties, keeping buildings

Insulpaint® beats conventional insulation hands down.

Staff and customers at one ofAustralia’s largest homewareretailers, Tony Sadlers were veryuncomfortable with the heatinside the store. Even with theair-conditioner running all daylong it was still too hot anduncomfortable. Rather thanupgrading the air-conditioningsystem at a prohibitive cost,Tony Sadler the owner, decidedto Insulpaint® the asbestos roofnot only to cool the buildingdown but also to seal thedangerous asbestos fibres.

24 hours after Insulpaint®

coating was applied andtemperature monitors wereinstalled throughout the2000m2 store Tony could notbelieve the reduction in averagetemperatures especially on a40ºC the internal temperatureswere up to 12ºC cooler. Themanagement were so impressedwith Insulpaint® results. Onsome days the air-conditionerwas not required as the shop wascool and comfortable.
