The Milagro Beanfield War by John Nichols

As the Gooding Public Library bids a fond farewell to thesoon to be retired Director Pat Hamilton, it was her request thatI read and review the Milagro Beanfield War. Since she consid-ers this one of her favorites, it surely is a proof those twenty-five years running libraries have not ruined her sense of humor.

Published in 1974, the Milagro Beanfield War is like a fruit– by that I mean that the seed at the center is a hard politicalissue – government and big business vs the common man. Andlike a fruit, that serious seed is surrounded by soft tissue that isdelicious and juicy. The author appears to have enjoyed himselfimmensely as he spent leisurely pages giving every character acomplicated and convoluted backstory as he filled his town ofMilagro with every kind of poor, drunk uneducated wacko, edu-cated wacko and money grubbing bad guy (You know, peoplelike our own neighbors and relatives). My favorite is the haplessVISTA volunteer who is completely unequipped to fight snakesor anything else for that matter. Woven into these lives are out-rageous folklore, magic and superstition.

John Nichols must have sat at his typewriter pounding awayas he laughed himself silly. Big business and corrupt bureau-cracy may be at the core of this novel, but who cares? It’s thepeople who make you laugh and cringe.

They say a man’s home is his castle. That may be true, but what about after he

crosses the moat (which is partially designed to keepout intruders)? Does he become part of the world outside

the moat or is beyond the moat still his? Good question. I believeoutside the moat still holds some of what is yours.

Everyone can walk outside their house on their property inthe dark and generally know where everything is. What aboutinside your house? Years ago I allowed a lady with a baby tostay at my house because, at the time, they had no place to go.I was OK with helping them and told her to treat the house asher own.

One evening I came home late from work. Not to disturbanyone, I walked through the house into the living room on myway to my bedroom. All of a sudden, my feet were kicked outfrom under me and I went flying across the coffee table withthings crashing everywhere. Who was in my house?! The babystarted crying and lights popped on. As the lights came on I sawmy friend had turned the couch crossways in the living room. Ihad fallen across the couch onto the coffee table.

She said she was sorry that she had changed the living room.I was OK with the change, but she had not given me any ad-vanced notice. For years I had walked the same path in thedark without even one mishap.

As you can see, I did not know the inside of my own house.Earlier, I mentioned you generally know what is outside yourhouse - for at least a certain amount of space. A few nights agonear dark, I needed some penetrating oil to finish a project Iwas working on. I knew there was some sitting on one of mytractors in the garden. I proceeded to get the oil. The path I hadwalked to the tractor had been traveled hundreds upon hun-dreds of times.

As I walked by the tractor I heard a noise ten feet awayfrom me. To my surprise and horror, it was a skunk standingthere with its tail fanned wide. I was close enough I could seeits hind end with clarity.

“Oh, no,” I yelled. I was watching for the spraying action ofthe skunk’s legs (they use their legs to propel the odor). I toreout for the hundred-yard-dash at record speed! Apparently, Iscared the skunk because it ran in my wood shed. I guess thatexplains why I have a bag of half eaten grain in there. Thewood shed is a catch all, and now I am a little leery about rear-ranging or even putting my wood in it.

Luck had it that I didn’t get sprayed. Besides that, whostores enough tomato juice to take a bath in to neutralize theskunk spray. Doomsday preppers don’t even prepare for thatkind of accident. I am at the conclusion that a man’s home is hiscastle if he leaves a light on, and outside your castle you are aguest of the world.

This is my “Cup of Black & White Tee.”
