CENTRO is an institution for higher education specialized in creative studies. Leading professionals guide students from ideas to implementation, balancing talent and discipline, risk and certainty, with an interdisciplinary and entrepreneurial focus. CENTRO´s strength is its integrated vision: teachers, staff, course content and facilities come together in the same spirit of redefining the scope of creativity.

Education programsCENTRO is a higher education institution whose academic, educational and outreach proposals offer undergraduate and master’s programs in design, digital media, film and television. CENTRO offers an educational environment that by being solely focused on educating youth in creative degree programs, allows for the development and drive of professionals who are capable of proposing innovative results that are relevant to contemporary Mexico’s context and reality. Seven undergraduate programs are offered amid this context: Interior Architecture, Film and Television, Visual Communication, Industrial Design, Digital Media Design, Textile and Fashion Design and Marketing and Advertising. One graduate degree is also given: the Master’s in Design Studies.

CENTRO’s educational model includes the training of professionals through curricula, which include for each discipline the development of skills, knowledge and attitudes, multi-disciplinary work, professional practice and the need to respond to different challenges of the professional world.

Description of curricula The programs given at CENTRO have unique characteristics that respond to a very specific curriculum design derived from in-depth field studies which considered the following aspects: study of competition and market opportunities, professional field, admissions profile, graduation profile and general degree program objectives. The results from this extensive task of education research began in undergraduate and post-graduate curricula organized by area and with different types of academic units (courses), with a total duration of eight semesters (4 years) per undergraduate program and 4 semesters (2 years) for the undergraduate program, with each semester lasting 16 weeks.

1. UNDERGRADUATE LEVELEach undergraduate curriculum is comprised of one foundation year (semesters 1 and 2), a set of courses focused on specific study of the discipline (semesters 3 to 8) and a series of complementary and general elective courses (1 per semester from 3rd to 7th semesters).

Foundation Year The Foundation Year is an integral, mandatory part of each bachelor´s degree program. Students take theoretical seminars and practical studio courses during the two semesters of the first year:

The objectives of the Foundation Year are to provide: I. An interdisciplinary education among degree programs from theory to implementation; II. An inclusive, diverse disciplinary education that goes beyond the strict boundaries of design and communication teaching to include the history of thought, history of art, cultural sciences, and literature, among others; III. Concrete problem solving skills in an environment that encourages an integral vision and team work; IV. A solid, broad humanities education; V. The practical application of theoretical concepts with the objective of developing a proactive interest in research and experimentation; VI. An awareness within the student as to how design and communication constitute a integral part of cultural production.

These specific mandatory courses develop the students´ cognitive skills and provide them with historical-cultural knowledge with a solid grounding in methodological, theoretical and practical skills.

Disciplinary areas Each disciplinary area is comprised of workshops and courses unique to the disciplinary education specific to each academic program. They allow students to have an outlook on the set of areas of action and development of their disciplines. The contents are structured in an increasingly complex order over the course of six semesters.

The subjects focused on the work in each specific discipline involve carrying out project activities, the creation of concepts, problem solving, application of specific techniques and processes and the acquisition of historical and cultural knowledge.

Page 4: COURSE CATALOG - ArtCenter College of Design · elective courses (1 per semester from 3rd to 7th semesters). Foundation Year The Foundation Year is an integral, mandatory part of

Complementary electives These are courses that are shared with other undergraduate programs, where students have the opportunity to develop cognitive skills and acquire historical and cultural knowledge, methodological knowledge, theories and practices specific to other disciplines that complement their professional labors.

General electives These are courses students can choose based on their interests and concerns, focused on providing general humanistic knowledge and which are shared with other undergraduate programs.

2. GRADUATE LEVELThe Master’s Degree in Design Studies has a curriculum developed based on four disciplinary areas with a high level of specialization.

Research: focused on development of the main methodologies and research practices in the creative environment. This allows for the creation of maps, outlines and visual diagrams, as well as other relevant visual materials to transmit new knowledge.

Strategies: focused on communicating design experiences and their creative processes through expositions, catalogs, articles and editorials with a unique discourse. Based on knowledge previously acquired, this area develops the skills to design relevant strategies and policies that confirm design as an effective tool to improve the quality of life and economic development.

Context: based on a review of the background and historical context in which design manifests itself, this area focuses on analysis of the relationship between design and everyday life and its social, economic and political implications.

Teaching: understanding the educational process as a trigger for research and design as a tool to transmit knowledge; methodologies, practices and instruments are used to coordinate and lead the teaching and learning of creativity.
