Iyar-Sivan-Tammuz 5778 4

Sometimes it is the kind simple gesture that reminds us of

our humanity and can inspire us to think of others. It

doesn't have to be an earth shattering act of kindness that

saves the entire world. We don't have to be superman (or

woman) to achieve an act of smallness, to accomplish the

understated gesture.

In fact, all it really takes for us to make a difference can be something as small as

doing the laundry. Think I'm a little 'off base' in my choice of kindness? Guess

again. No one other than G-d Himself believes that doing laundry is the stuff of

greatness. As we read in these week’s Torah portions: As Moshe describes G-d's

kindness to us with the words "your clothes did not wear out". Our commentators

say that we actually had our own personal dry-cleaning service in the desert. Our

clothes and our needs were taken care of. If doing the laundry is enough for G-d

to brag about then it can certainly become a gesture of kindness that we can do

for others. It might not sound like the redemption of the world, but small acts of

kindness for others, even the laundry, can help us to stay the course and even

find a little inspiration in our lives as well.

And this brings me to a small but meaningful insight concerning the alternative

name of Shavuot. If you look carefully you will notice that the official name is

actually ‘Matan Torateinu – the Giving our OUR Torah’. That’s a strange way of

expressing who really is in charge of the Torah. After all, G-d wrote it, G-d gave

it, and we end up calling it ours? And yet here-in lays the secret of Jewish

eternity. We have been blessed to live through the ups and downs of history, to

come out of the horrors of the 20th century and rebuild our precious land. Our

secret was that the gifts we were given were seen as something we took

ownership over. It has never been enough to simply accept a gift. The gifts given

to the Jewish people were then transformed, owned and appreciated as if they

were the products of our own hands. This is also true with the Torah - ‘Matan

Torateinu – the Giving our OUR Torah’. Also this is true with the modern State of

Israel and it is true in terms of our own beautiful community and congregation.

We have been given tremendous gifts. Now let us make them shinie!

Wishing you an enjoyable summer, with some learning, some growing, and

plenty of healthy sunshine.

It is with great trepidation that I am writing my last Hatikvah

message as President of CBTASNH. It has been quite an

exceptional experience for me, my family and all those with

whom I have had the pleasure to work with so closely. I feel we

have accomplished many things during my tenure and only

hope that the seeds planted will continue to grow with new

leadership for the next 120 years. But truthfully, I am not here

today to tell you about what we have done for the past two

years, but rather to plead with all of you to help insure that our institution of over

50 years stays strong and vibrant. My greatest legacy would be to see more of

you GET INVOLVED! You each have the power to make a difference, to build

connection through this amazing institution, and we need your help. It can be as

simple as being part of our daily minyan or a phone or social committee. You can

join something already existing or create and help fulfill an idea you may have.

There are so many ways to be involved and so much good comes from belonging.

Over the past two years I appreciated hearing from many of you, some good

things, and some complaints. But I can confidently say that in most cases, we

reacted to the best of our ability as volunteers, always keeping the ultimate

interest of the congregation in the forefront of our decision making. One thing I

can guarantee is that many of the decisions we took were not easy ones but they

were always given the time, the energy, and the careful consideration they

deserved. We never lost sight of our greater purpose for the love of our Shul and

the community in which we live, pray and honour.

Just before I became President, following my good friend Marty Levitt’s tenure

Rabbi Fishman asked me if I would lead a strategic planning committee to look at

the future of CBTASNH. This dedicated group of people met on many occasions,

and it concluded, for us to make the future stronger, we needed to take care of

immediate issues. Our first priority in the process was entitled “Getting Our House

in Order”. What does that mean? Well to start, it speaks to looking internally at

trying to improve what we already have existing. This included assessing the

needs and roles of our hard-working professional staff and maintenance staff. It

focuses on using better communication methods such as social media and weekly

postings and emails. We are also looking at simplifying our current membership

structure as well as examining our overall security for the entire building. This is a

process that will continue going forward as part of the strategic committee’s

recommendation.

Our Annual General Meeting will take place on Tuesday June 5th, where a new

President, Vice Presidents and board will be installed. It is an important meeting

as stakeholders and You should really make an effort to attend. You will hear

about the plans and what is going on, and you will have the opportunity to ask

questions and truly be part of the process. Again, don’t just leave it to others, have

your say as well, and let this be your first step to getting more involved.

From our family to yours, I wish you a warm spring and only good health. Thank

you for the opportunity you have given me the past two years and I look forward to

helping, supporting, and encouraging the new Board of hard working volunteers

whom I know will put their heart and soul into our remarkable House of Hope.

HEBREW ACADEMY NEWS Hebrew Academy has had a very busy couple of months! Our Kitah Gimel and Daled classes presented a wonderful "Shabbat on a Wednesday" program to their parents.

Celebrating Purim is always so much fun with hamentashen making and an amazing circus workshop. All students enjoyed trying out various juggling techniques, plate balancing, stilt walking and more.

Then of course began our Pesach preparations. Everyone had seders in class and our Kitah Aleph class presented a model seder to their parents. Everyone also enjoyed a mimouna celebration with yummy treats led by our Shinshinim Eden and Ori.

It’s almost our end of year and we are looking forward to our upcoming Grade 2 Chagigah Siddur, a field trip, a Kindergarten Alef Bet chagigah and an inspiring Holocaust survival story for our Grade 5/6 classes.

Iyar-Sivan-Tammuz 5778 18

The Torah was given by G-d to the Jewish people on Mount Sinai more than 3300 years ago. Every year on the holiday of Shavuot we renew our acceptance of G-d's gift, and G-d "re-gives" the Torah”.

In biblical times Shavuot also marked the beginning of the new agricultural season and was called Hag HaKatzir, which means

“The Harvest Holiday.” Other names Shavuot is known by are “The Feast of Weeks”

which marks the completion of the seven week counting period between Passover and Shavuot and Hag HaBikurim, meaning “The Holiday of First Fruits.” This last name comes from the practice of bringing fruits to the Temple on Shavuot. After the destruction of the Temple in 70 CE the Rabbis connected Shavuot with the

Revelation at Mt. Sinai, when G-d gave the Ten Commandments to the Jewish people. This is why Shavuot celebrates the giving and receiving of the Torah in modern times. The giving of the Torah was a far-reaching spiritual event, one that touched the essence of the Jewish soul for all times. Our sages have compared it to a wedding between G-d and the Jewish people. Shavuot also means "oaths," for on this day G-d swore eternal devotion to us, and we in turn pledged everlasting loyalty to Him. It is a Shavuot tradition to adorn the synagogue and the home with greenery, fragrant flowers, leaves, boughs and trees. The holiday of Shavuot is a two-day holiday, beginning at sundown on the 5

th of Sivan,

May 19th

and lasting until nightfall of the 7th

of Sivan, May 21st

.

Women and girls light holiday candles to usher in the holiday, on both the first and second evenings of the holidays. Candles on the first night are lit after 9:17 PM and on the second night must be lit from an existing flame after 9:18 PM. As on other holidays,

special meals are eaten, and no "work" may be performed. The Ten Commandments combine two sets of relationships: Duties between man and G-d, and our duties from person to person. Come with your children to the Synagogue to hear the Ten Commandments. Many Jews commemorate Shavuot by spending the entire night studying Torah at their synagogue or at home. This all-night gathering is known as Tikun Leyl Shavuot and at dawn Sunday, May 20

th at 4:00 AM they recite Shacharit, the morning prayer.

It is customary to eat dairy foods on Shavuot. Among other reasons, this commemorates the fact that upon receiving the Torah, including the kosher laws, the Jewish people could not cook meat in their pots, which had yet to be rendered kosher. On the second day of Shavuot, the Yizkor memorial service is recited.

Or, voilà qu’alors

May – June 2018

Or
