Last week Cowra Public School sent a large contingent of students to the Western Region Athletics Carnival in Dubbo with Ellis Hawker being crowned the 800m champion. Ellis will now progress to the State Carnival later in the year. Other standout performances included the boys relay, which only just missed a placing in the final. We congratulate all students who reached the Western Region level and commend them for their representation of our school. At school, the staff has been very busy with both Stage 2 and Stage 3 teachers being involved in Maths Matters professional learning. The children will benefit from this ongoing training of our teachers in delivering engaging mathematical lessons that enhance student learning and knowledge retainment. The school has also been involved in Connecting to Country that saw five staff members completing a three day program with focus on local Aboriginal culture and history. This program is seen to heighten the awareness of all schools involved to the strong connection of Aboriginal heritage and the ongoing development of forming strong connections and partnerships in our community. Tomorrow the girls’ soccer team will play in Bathurst in the PSSA knockout. The girls are very excited and the school wishes them the very best. Mr Tom will be coaching the girls on the day and is feeling the pressure, knowing the team Dear Parents Cowra Public School was delighted to be recognised by Prime Minister, Julia Gillard, in her national address to the National Press Club whilst outlining the government’s planned commitment to funding to heighten Australian academic achievement in schools. The Prime Minister highlighted the achievement at Cowra Public School, stating how the school has made significant gains in the educational achievement of our students in moving from testing at national average to consistently achieving beyond national standard and beyond that of comparative schools. The Prime Minister praised the school, the staff, student Learning Support Officers, parents and community and especially the children for their commitment towards educational improvement. To be chosen as the national example of success was a huge honour for Cowra Public School which highlights the strong commitment for educational excellence that is promoted at the school. At Cowra Public School every child is directed towards academic achievement and success. Cowra Public School has also been congratulated by Carol McDiarmid (Regional Director, Western NSW Region) for progressing to the Tier 2 level of Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL). Only six schools in Western Region have satisfied the criteria to move to Tier 2 level. Inclusion in this group indicates the high level of commitment to improving student outcomes and maintaining fidelity with the PBL process. Tier 2 enables the school to target the most effective strategies to assist students enabling success. under the guidance of Ms James, has won their last two games. Next week the school will be involved in the Annual Cowra Show with several groups performing at the show. On Wednesday, 12 September Kindergarten, the dance group and the circus performers will be performing at the show. The school will have a display at the show and a huge thankyou needs to go to Mrs Cobcroft for once again coordinating the school display. Scripture will not be on next Wednesday due to the schools involvement at the show. The school will be hosting a 2013 Kindergarten Parent information night starting at 7pm on Thursday, 13 September. This meeting will give parents information on the commencement of Kindergarten as well as offering time for questions they may have towards the best preparation for their child heading off to school for the first time. On Friday, 14 September the school will be hosting Jump Rope for Heart activities with the students participating during sport time. Skipping is a popular lunch activity at the moment with several students able to do tricks that really have to be seen to be believed. Regards Brad Tom

2013 Kindergarten Enrolments

Enrolments are now being accepted for children who commence school in 2013. Enrolment packages are available from the school office. Last week Cowra Public School sent a large contingent of students to the Western Region Athletics Carnival in Dubbo with Ellis Hawker being crowned the 800m champion. STAGE 3 CANBERRA EXCURSION

This year, children from Stage 3, have the opportunity to take part in a three day excursion to Canberra from Wednesday, 12th December to Friday, 14th December 2012.

The PIE DRIVE profit has been deducted from the full cost of the excursion saving the 66 students participating $45. What an outstanding fundraiser! The next instalment of $50 is due tomorrow, Friday, 7 September. With the remaining instalment due:

NSW PREMIER’S SPELLING BEE On Monday 17th September four Cowra Public School students will travel to Molong Central School to compete in the NSW Premier’s Spelling Bee. The students will compete in 2 sections: Stage 2 section - Years 3-4

YEAR 6 T-SHIRTS Year 6 students have shown interest in ordering a Souvenir T-Shirt. The t-shirts will cost $20.00 each. They will be gold, with the design pictured on the front and all the Year 6 students’ names on the back. The front design and students’ names will be printed in black. A note has been sent home and if you wish your child to take advantage of this offer please indicate on the note the size of the t-shirt required and return the order with the $20.00 to the school by tomorrow, Friday, 7 September, 2012. This t-shirt will be worn on the Canberra excursion. Please measure your child - do not estimate. T-Shirts cannot be exchanged.

STAGE 2 DUBBO EXCURSION On Friday, 26 October, Stage 2 children have the opportunity to participate in a day excursion to Dubbo Zoo. The excursion will tie in with work studied on endangered animals and Australian Fauna. The cost is $45.00 which must be paid at the school’s office before Friday, 21 September. Payments can be made in instalments. What to bring/wear (in a sturdy bag/back-pack. Suitable mufti attire, including

sensible shoes Hat, sunscreen, insect repellent

The bus will depart Cowra Public School at 6.30am and return at approximately 6.00pm. Any medication your child may need on the day should be given to the class teacher. The child’s name and instructions for administering must be clearly shown. All notes and money must be in by the end of Term 3 so the school can decide if they need to take one bus or two.

COWRA SHOW WEDNESDAY, 12 SEPTEMBER K1/R and KB K/1R and KB will be performing at the Cowra Show next Wednesday. Students will be walking to the show at 10.00am and will perform at around 10.30am. Students will perform two songs. If your child does not attend school in the morning please ensure that they meet the class at the performance stage at 10.30am Children may wear good casual clothes for the day, preferably jeans, a coloured top and joggers. The classes will be having lunch at the show. Students bringing their lunch will need to have it in a plastic bag. Students may bring some money if they want to buy a drink or something to eat. All students will be returning to school after lunch. If you are attending the show and would like your child to stay with you rather than return to school could you please write a note or see Mrs Ryan or Mrs Bowen. Dance Group The Cowra Public School Dance Group will be performing a dance routine at the Cowra Show next Wednesday at approximately 10.30am. Dress: Black t-shirt Black ¾ pants Hair in a pony tail Children will walk to the Show accompanied by Mrs Cobcroft and Mrs Duncan. Students will return to school at 1.00pm. Children may bring a small amount of money to buy a showbag, and something to eat or drink. Children already at the Show with their parents should meet their teachers at the performance stage at 10.30am. We advise parents to meet us inside the show. Performers have free access into the show but parents will need to pay to enter the show. At the end of the performance parents can personally collect their child as they need to be marked off class rolls. Circus Group The Circus Group will be performing at the Cowra Show next week. Admission is free for the children performing. Children will walk to the show accompanied by Mr Vaughan Egan and Mr Blake Duncombe at 10.00am and return to school at 1.00pm. Dress: School sports uniform Children may bring a small amount of money to buy a showbag or something to eat or drink. Parents are advised to meet the performers inside the show at the performance stage at 10.30am. At the end of the performance parents can personally collect their child. H2-3 class H2-3 class will be going to the show to watch the Cowra Show School’s Spectacular next Wednesday at approximately 11.30am. Admission to the Show is free for children attending. Dress: Full school uniform Children will walk to the Show accompanied by teachers. We suggest children bring lunch and a water bottle with them. At the end of the performance (approximately 12.15pm) parents must: Personally collect their child so the class teacher can mark them off the roll. Have sent in a note to the class teacher in the morning, giving written permission for their child to remain at the Show with a

parent or carer. Children may bring a small amount of money to buy a showbag or food and drink. A big invitation is issued to all parents to come along to the performance stage at approximately 10.30am to support all our CPS performers : a cheer squad makes a big difference!

PSSA GIRLS’ GALA SOCCER DAY On Friday, 7 September Cowra Public School Girls’ Soccer team will play in a Gala Soccer Day at Proctor Park, Bathurst. The students will travel to and from Bathurst by private car and will be met in Bathurst by Mr Brad Tom. Shirts will be supplied but children must supply all other requirements. Players must wear protective gear. Shin pads are compulsory and mouth guards are recommended. A drink bottle is also needed. The team will leave the Vaux Street carpark at 9.30am and will not return to school until 3.30pm. Please make alternative arrangements for your child to be collected from school. Permission notes have been sent home and these and the medical notes need to be returned to school. If you could assist with transport, please contact the school on 6342 2400.

JUMP ROPE FOR HEART Jump Rope for Heart will take place next Friday, 14 September from 1.45pm-3.10pm. All primary students will be participating in the “Jump Off” and have been enthusiastically practising their skipping skills in preparation for the big day. Sponsorship forms were distributed a few weeks ago and we encourage all students to seek some sponsorship from family and friends in order to support the Heart Foundation and earn some fantastic prizes. Forms and also money raised are due back at school on the Jump Off Day but may be returned to school at any time the following week. Everyone is welcome to join us as we get fitter and have fun.

T20 CRICKET DAY

On Wednesday, 19 September, the Cowra Junior Cricket Association and Cricket NSW have organised a T20 Cricket Day at Edgell Park in Cowra. The day will commence at 9.15am and will run to 2.30pm. Children will return to school at the end of the cricket. Boys and girls’ teams have been invited to participate.

There will be a canteen available on the day.

School sports uniform is to be worn. Cricket gear will be provided. Travel to and from the oval is by private transport.

SENIOR BOYS’ RELAY TEAM Congratulations to the Senior Boys’ Relay team who came 4th in the Regional

Athletics Carnival held in Dubbo last week. The boys just missed out on gaining a place in the Regional Team and going to State.

WESTERN REGION PSSA ATHLETICS

Cowra Public School represented our District very strongly last Friday at the Regional Athletics Carnival in Dubbo. Nineteen students attended and competed in a variety of track and field events, including all four of our relay teams.

All athletes did their very best with many recording PBs in their chosen event and all performing with a great deal of enthus iasm and sportsmanship. Congratulations to Ellis Hawker who qualified to represent Western Region at State Athletics in Sydney. Ellis gained 1st place in the Senior Boys’ 800m, an outstanding effort! Congratulations to the athletes and thank you to their families for supporting them in their efforts.

COWRA LACHLAN VALLEY JUNIOR TENNIS TOURNAMENT The Cowra Lachlan Valley Junior Tennis Tournament will be held on September 15 and 16. The tournament is part of the NSW State Series which is a participation event aimed at juniors competing in tournaments for the first time. The round robin format will be used, giving all players the opportunity to play in a number of matches. Age groups range from 8 and under up to 18 and under and events include singles, doubles and mixed doubles. The 8 and under event will use a low compression orange ball and a reduce court size. You will need to enter the tournament online at tournaments.tennis.com.au. A tennis NSW affiliation is required to enter any tournament and this can be done through the Cowra Tennis Club. $25 will cover your tennis club membership as well as your affiliation. YALBILLINGA LITERACY PACE PROGRAM READ WITH ME 32 Yalbillinga would like to hear your story or experiences that you have had with Yalbillinga. At the Open Day and Dinner we will have a yarn with everyone and ask if they would like their story or experience transcribed. Yalbillinga will then collate everyone’s contributions together with photos and make a Yalbillinga memory book. Yalbillinga is hoping to then get the book published. A copy of the book will be given to each contributor.
