From the department of How the World Has ChangedYouth football games in Chambersburg are now played on Sunday morn ings.
I grew up in Northern New Jersey, not a hotbed of religiosity, but Sundays were held to be somewhat sa-
cred. Blue laws meant that the malls, and most other stores and businesses, closed on Sunday. No sportsleagues played on Sunday, not even on Sunday afternoon. Nor were any school activities scheduled for theday. If you are my age or older, you probably have similar memories.
When I heard about Sunday morning football, my first reaction was to sputter with indignation how darethey! And I have serious concerns about how sports are getting out of hand, consuming far too much time andimportance in the lives of many families (check my Facebook page for a recent article on the subject). ButSunday morning football is merely one more sign of the rapid secularization of our culture. Not long ago, thechurch was a key institution in the life of most communities, and participation in the life of the church, espe-cially worship, took precedence over most everything else. Now church participation competes with sports, dance lessons, social clubs and myriad other events. And Ive noticed that in this competition, the church usu-ally loses.
What are we to do? I think we Christians have to become more like Jews.
Every Friday evening in my hometown, Jewish families would walk to evening services at the local syna-gogue. They didnt drive because driving was not part of their Sabbath observance. And these families wentto Sabbath services every single week, despite whatever other activities might have tempted them away. I alsohad Jewish friends who took weekly classes to prepare for their bar mitzvah. And no matter what else wasgoing on, they never missed those classes.
Jews have learned over the centuries that to maintain their faith and identity, they must give first place intheir lives to worship and the life of faith. This is a major reason why Jews have survived 2,000 years of
persecution and kept alive the faith of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. continued on page 6

Dear Friends at Central,It was with great joy that I received the $4,000charitable check that you folks sent to Habitat.I have been in discussion with Bob Creter fromyour church about our need for funding to extend
the public sewer line for our Limestone Drivehomes in Guilford Township. The sewer work isnow completed and we will use your gift to helppay the fees. Over the next few years we willbuild 4 homes on Limestone Drive so this sewerwork was an essential part of the plan. We con-sider you friends, investors, and co-laborers asHabitat leads the charge to eliminate substan-dard housing in Franklin County. Additionally, thank you for sending a volunteer crew to workon the 1st Limestone house for the Gomez fam-

An interesting observation from a sister in Christ!DO YOU KNOW THEM? WHO?The people beside you? If you do not knowthem, you should! Members may find churchmembers beside them. Members may find visi-tors or guests beside them. Visitors and guestsmay find other visitors and guests beside them.Do you know them? Make sure you do beforeyou leave church on Sunday.

JOY VILLAGE UPDATEMany of the children living in Joy Village have experienced fear, loss and abuse. One way to help
them deal with their traumas is through art, which helps them express their fears, hopes, struggles anddreams.
In the Kenyan school systems, community and compliance are highly valued and individuality is dis-couraged. Thus it is very difficult for a child to share and learn to deal with his feelings. Therapeutic art
allows the child to communicate a difficult feeling and thereby find comfort and healing. When work-ing on a group mural project, the child also discovers that she is not alone, and that there are others tosupport her.
The greatest prayer of the workers in Joy Village is that the children will come to realize that they aretreasured and loved. They want every child to know that he is a precious creation, and that God has aplan for him.
A check for $4000 was recently sent to Joy Village from Central Presbyterian Church. This will beenough to support two children for a year. Please pray for the small residents of Joy Village, and visitthe website, www.treeoflives.orgto learn more about them. Enjoy the smiles on the childrens faces,
and look for the little boy in the Superman T-shirt!

The day has arrived when followers of Jesus Christ have to decide what comes first - worship andparticipation in the community of the church, or other activities. Were together at most to worshipand learn and support one another for three or four hours a week. Thats not much time compared, forinstance, how much TV is viewed by the average person. Thats not much time to devote to worshipand learning how to follow Jesus in an increasingly secular culture.
I say this not to heap guilt on families that are pulled in 17 different directions. I say this to offer away out of the American way of life that is growing increasingly stressful and even toxic. Jesus
Christ is the way, the truth and the life; Jesus Christ is the only source of abundant and eternal life. Ifwere going to find the blessings of following Christ, if were going to be followers of Christ, thenour life together, and our practice of faith at home, are going to have to come first.
Id love to hear from you on this subject. You may contact me [email protected] giveme a call, at 264-4113.

Dear Friends in Christ,
Were writing to update you on the progress of our ongoing Celebrating our Past, Preparing For Our Futurecapital campaign that began last October as part of the 145thanniversary celebration of our church.
As the name indicates, the campaigns purpose is to prepare Central for the future God has for us by investingin ministry and infrastructure. So far we have received almost $80,000 versus $130,098 in pledges! Hereswhat your contributions have enabled your church to do so far:
Purchase a used handicapped-accessible mini-bus that has been used by the Youth Group. MissionTeam and Church Staff, as well as in the last Christmas parade.Cost (after the sale of the old van) - $7,600
Install two ranks of swell reed pipes on our classic Cassavant organ - $10,015
Purchase an electronic piano for use during the first worship service. Cost - $3,100
Install a new church telephone system, church-wide wireless internet as well as new computers forthe church staff and church office. All this technology was badly out of date. These new systemswill serve the church well for years to come. Cost - $21,500
Contributed $4,000 to both Joy Village in Kenya and Habitat for Humanity Franklin County. Wehave pledged to give 10% of all campaign receipts, divided equally between these two missions.
Here is what is planned next for the campaign:
Improve the Sanctuary sound and lighting systems so the congregation can better hear and see thePastor and worship leaders.
Replace the yellowed Lexan covering the Ascension Window with clear tempered glass to makethe window (with its image of the risen Christ) visible to our community.
If you are supporting the campaign, thank you! If not, we invite you to become part of this exciting effort tolay the groundwork for the next chapter in Centrals life and ministry to the world. Contact the church officeto learn how you can participate.
In Christs Love,

CARE PACKAGES FOR CPC COLLEGE STUDENTS
For the past 14 years a very loving ministry at Central
Presbyterian Church has been to send goodie boxes to
Centrals college students near and far. Your generosity in
donating items has been appreciated over the years as has
your monetary support which goes toward other items
that may be needed to make the packages complete. If
you could find time to donate just a small amount of your
day or evening just once a month, to help pack boxes, youd be showing your
love even more. It would also make a great family project. You can reach Sue
Stahl by contacting the church office at 717-264-4113 or catch up with her on
Sunday mornings at church.
