Dear EditorA recent article in a rival publicationstated that the new crematoria on the theHolt Road will cost three millions pounds. If the story had appeared in CrabtalesI would of course taken this for atypographical error or a ball..ahem, slip-up

by the Editor. The repair to the promenadecost three million pounds and that rose totake into account storm damage. In thesame issue of this journal, there was astory of fty-eight new homes to be builtin North Norfolk which will cost just overthree millions. What are we talking about?A chapel of sorts with an oven attachedand a big chimney with a wee stretch ofroad leading to it. How can

it cost so much?As we are on the subject, and I dontwant to cause alarm and despondency,

but if you think about there is someonenow happily going about their business,

perhaps even reading this letter, who isdestined to be the rst customer of thatcrematoria. A sobering thought. Ivenot been feeling too chipper meself justlately...Yours Sincerely,Philip Graham

Editor. We of course never make mistakesand check and recheck the verasity of allour articles....within reason!

    Baconsthorpe VillageSchool 200 YEARS

    OLD Happy Birthday!

Baconsthorpe School was opened in 1816 one year after the battle of Waterloo, for the children of Baconsthorpe andHempstead. It was built mainly by publicsubscription. Those who were unable to

contribute nancially gave their labourfor free by carting stone from a quarry2.5 miles away and residents also went toCley port to collect building materials thatwere imported from Belgium. It was one of the rst National schoolsin England. National schools werefounded by the National Society forPromoting Religious Education. Theseschools provided elementary education,in accordance with the teaching of theChurch of England.

    Baconsthorpe School was a primary

school. The rst headmaster was JohnBeales and in 1817 there were more than100 pupils - the girls were taught needlework and knitting. When the school closedin July 1983there were 22 pupils andEddie Powell was the headmaster.

After the school was closed, this GradeII listed building, became the VillageHall ensuring that it continued to have animportant role in Baconsthorpe, bringing

residents together. There is a post o cetwice a week, the Diocesan Play Van,line dancing and carpet bowls weekly,a monthly pop-up pub and regular fundraising events.

On Saturday 25th June there will be eventsto recognise the two roles the schoolhas had in Baconsthorpe. From 2pmthe village fete will celebrate the school

buildings present role and from 4pmthe school reunion, Pop-Up Pub and hogroast will allow former pupils and localresidents to reminisce about the role theschool has played in their lives. Throughout there will be an exhibition of schoolhistory that has be contributed to by MarkSmith the great, great, great grandson ofthe rst headmaster, Mr.Lewin & Mr.Ford(headmasters) and numerous previous

pupils and their relations. If anyone hasphotos to add to the exhibition, please call01263 577 706.

    LETTERS CONTINUEDFROM PAGE 3.

    Dear Editor,

I Would like your readers to consider the following.

NATIONAL EU REFERENDUM CAMPAIGN GOESTO THE SEASIDE IN NORFOLK TO FLAG THEENVIRONMENTAL CASE TO REMAIN.

Before Britain joined the European Union, raw sewage wasdischarged in to the sea, beaches had to be closed for bathing andthe country was known as the dirty man of Europe, an East ofEngland Euro MP has told a national environmental campaignevent for the EU Referendum, held at Cromer Beach in Norfolk, today (Sunday 29 May).

Labours Richard Howitt MEP said the EU blue ag statusawarded to Cromer beach, four others in North Norfolk and24 across East Anglia, made it safe to swim for families and iscrucial to attracting tourists to visit.

A thirteen year old Walsham school student, Hannah Berry, saidBritain remaining in the European Union was vital for the future,

who attended after volunteering to help through the cross-partyEuropean Movement, who organised the event.

Holding a beach ball emblazoned with the slogan Remain forNature, Richard Howitt MEP told the event:

Before Britain joined the European Union, 25 per cent of ourbeaches were unt for swimming, but when the EU bathingwater law was proposed, the then British Government opposed itas undue interference.

Instead the EU blue ag scheme has led to 95 per cent ofBritish beaches being safe for swimmers, and the excellentstatus achieved in here in Cromer and at beaches across EastAnglia, is crucial to underpinning 90,000 jobs and 4.5billion of

    tourist income to local business.

Pollution in our sea or in the air, or the carbon emissions whichcause global warming, will never stop at a line on the map. Theenvironmental case for Britain to remain in the European Unionis overwhelming.

Praising Environmentalists for Europe who had joined theEuropean Movement to organise todays event, Richard HowittMEP quipped:

The Chair of Environmentalists for Europe is Boris JohnsonsDad, and if you cant even persuade your own father, why shouldanyone else believe the leave case?

    Phil Harris

Hannah Berry (right) and her mother, Dr Bianca Finger-Berry(left) and Richard Howitt MEP (centre), at Cromers EU blueag today, holding the Remain for Nature beach ball.

    Dear Sir,

Freedom of speech has for generations granted to everyfreeborn British person the right to grumble about our leaders andrulers, our managers and others in authority over us.

On May 6th the EU removed that right, not that many wouldknow it from the silence in much of the media (source: DailyTelegraph).

The European Court of Justice ruled that the right to complainabout, or otherwise point out, the failings or wrongdoings of theEU Commission is illegal and gave the Commission the right tolegally punish individuals who damage the institutions imageand reputation.

Interestingly, from an historic viewpoint, almost the samewords were used in the Enabling Act of 1933 which allowed theGerman government to abolish civil liberties including rightsof free speech which were not restored in that country until 1945.

Dont take my word for it; the complete transcript of the Act inboth German and English is available on line.

Yet another reason to vote Leave on June 23rd.

    Yours faithfully,UK I P Councillor Michael Baker,

NOTE FROM THE EDITOR...In the interests of balance we have included one remain andone leave letter. In my opinion they both demonstrate the diculty faced bythe voting public caused by the nature of the campaigns.Although I cannot claim to have read all materials from thetwo camps I can say with certainty that Boris has never saidthat it is the right of every Englishman to have their stoolspropelled unmolested into the North Sea. Further, to putthe leave letter to the test let it be known that I think the EUCOMMISSION are often incompetent because they do notcommunicate and create consensus with the EUs Citizens

regarding the laws and regulations they proer. If I am arrested I hope all CRABTALES readers will rise upto free me. Is that a knock at the door......................??

Dear Editor,We were so pleased to read the article about the Cinnamon Trustin the last issue of Crab Tales. The Trust is such a lovely charity! We have recently lost our

beloved cat Thomas, a long term foster cat, who died suddenlyaged 21. He came to live with us when he was 17 years old whenMarjorie, his former owner, had to go in to a home. Marjorie had

previously registered herself and Thomas with the charity in the

knowledge that when she could no longer care for him, he wouldbe looked after. My parents both had Dementia and I was their full time carer. We had always had cats and we knew that a cat would help themwhen they got upset. Thomas was wonderful, especially withMum who had Alzheimers Disease. Sadly both parents have

passed away, but Thomas helped my husband Les and I to getover their deaths. On a much happier note, we were able to keep in contact withMarjorie and keep her updated with Thomas life and his tripsto the vets or if we went away for a few days, his visits to theexcellent Cattery in our village. Although Thomas is no longerwith us we keep in contact with Marjorie, this is a lovely thingabout Cinnamon, lasting human friendships are made through thecare of beloved pets.Sheila MitchellDilham, North Walsham.

Chest Pain by Dr Adam MaggioChest pain is often a very worrying symptom when we experience it. For most peoplethe most concerning cause is a heart attack. In the year of 2014/15 in the UK there wereabout 400,000 admissions into hospitals related to heart disease according to the Oceof National Statistics. Given that chest pain is a major indication of heart disease it is acertainly a symptom worth knowing about. The rst myth to dispel though is that heart disease is not the only cause of chest pain. There are a variety of organs in the chest area of our bodies that can cause chest pain.Below is a list of those organs and some of the diseases that can cause chest pain

    associated with them:

Heart: Angina, myocardial infarction (heart attack), pericarditis etc.Lungs: Chest infections, pulmonary embolism (blood clot on the lung), pleurisy etc.Oesophagus (gullet): Oesophagitis, oesophageal spasm etc.Ribs, muscles & nerves: Rib fractures, muscle strains from coughing, shingles.Anxiety and panic attacks can cause chest pain.

Hopefully the list above will show that there is a large number of causes of chest painand the list is by far not complete. However when patients presents to us as GPs withchest pain we use both the patients history and examination to come to a potentialdiagnosis and start an appropriate treatment plan. For patients it is important to consult a health professional when you have chest painhowever minor you might think it is because of the potential of it being a serious

problem. At Mundesley Medical Centre we have a triage system which helps the teamdistinguish between very serious problems and ones that might not be an imminentthreat to the patients health so if you call the surgery make us aware early on if youare having chest pain. However Mundesley Medical Centre is not open all the time andyou may experience chest pain out of hours. Even in those circumstances it is alwaysimportant to discuss any chest pain with a health professional and I would encourage theuse of the NHSs 111 service for this.Sometimes though, the option to discuss your chest pain with a health professionalwill not be appropriate. This is likely if someone is having a major heart attack. Thisoften presents with very heavy severe chest pain, associated sickness and vomitingand shortness of breath. If you nd yourself in those circumstances you need to call anambulance straight away via 999 to get appropriate help.Like all our articles, reducing the chances of you having major causes of chest pain isalways achievable with a healthy lifestyle. This would include not smoking, having avaried diet and drinking an appropriate amount of alcohol. As well as this, the two major

organs in the chest (heart and lungs) are always more healthy when we are more activeso make use of the ever improving weather and get as t as you can.Dr Adam Maggio MBChB, MRCGPMundesley Medical CentreThis article aims to supply information of a general nature and cannot substitute forthe advice of a medical professional. The article is not intended to diagnose health

problems or to take the place of professional medical care. If you have any concerns, consult your own doctor. Every eort is made to ensure that the information provided isaccurate and correct at the date of publication. No liability is accepted for any omissionor inaccuracy.

CLEAN THE BEACHES...CLEAN THE OCEANSWHY IT IS SO IMPORTANT.

Plastics in the Marine EnvironmentOver 80% of the annual input comes from land-based sources. The main contributor islarger plastic litter, including everyday items such as drinks bottles and other types of

plastic packaging. The remainder comes from plastics released at sea, the majority as aresult of shing activities for example, due to lost and discarded shing gear.94% of the plastic that enters the ocean ends up on the sea oor. There is now onaverage an estimated 70kg of plastic in each square kilometre of sea bed !!Despite the high prole of projects intended to clean up plastics oating in mid-ocean,relatively little actually ends up there. Barely 1% of marine plastics are found oatingat or near the ocean surface, with an average global concentration of less than 1kg/km2. This concentration increases at certain mid-ocean locations, with the highestconcentration recorded in the North Pacic Gyre at 18kg/km2.By contrast, the amount estimated to be on beaches globally is ve times greater, andimportantly, the concentration is much higher, at 2,000kg/km2. While some may have

been dropped directly, and other plastics may have been washed up, what is clear is thatthere is a ux of litter between beaches and the sea. By removing beach litter, we aretherefore cleaning the oceans.http://www.eunomia.co.uk/reports-tools/plastics-in-the-marine-environment/

You have Goat to be kidding me!North Norfolk District Council brings Britains oldest breed of goat to Cromer cli to control scrubland.A new habitat management project by NNDC hopes to keep an area of Cromer cli under control with the introduction of goats.Eight Bagot billy goats will be released into a fenced o area in June where their grazing will keep unwanted plant species andexcessive growth to a minimum. In the past the cli area has become overgrown, leading to a problem with litter embedded and snagged in bushes. The Bagot goatsgraze on rough materials rather than grass and will therefore keep plant growth over the area under control.Cllr Angie Fitch-Tillett, Cabinet Member for Environmental Services, said: This is an exciting project we hope the people of Cromerwill be able to enjoy two-fold for the habitat management the goats will oer and the enjoyment of having unusual animals in thetown. Now residents and visitors will not only be able to enjoy the beautiful Cromer sunsets, but watch our Billy goats working hard tokeep the town beautiful. The Bagot is believed to be Britains oldest breed of goat and unlike most other breeds - that favour mountains and uplands - itdeveloped in the English lowlands. Bagots are hardy and easy to tame.

NNDCs Cromer goats have been checked and monitored by a local vet and their welfare will continue to be appraised over their timeon Cromer cli. They will be surrounded by double livestock fencing that will be six foot tall at the bottom of the slope. The fenceswill be checked twice a day.Cllr Fitch-Tillett added: We must ask people not to feed or touch the goats because they have a job of work to do and we need themto not get distracted. The habitat grazing project was developed with support from Suolk Wildlife Trust and the goats arrived with the District Councilin April. Two came from the Dinosaur Park near Lenwade in Norfolk, and the other six from Levens Hall, Cumbria where they areraised as a semi-feral parkland breed. They have spent the past weeks getting used to one another and settling into their new group.

The goats will be released into the fenced-o area in June and remain until October or November when they will be taken to otherNNDC land to graze over the winter. If the goats clear the land too rapidly they will be moved to other land for grazing.

    Ground-breaking coastalpartnership

Coastal Partnership East, a new innovative approach to managingthe coast between Holkham in North Norfolk and LandguardPoint in Felixstowe, will be formally launched on Friday 10thJune 2016.The partnership, formed by bringing together the coastal

management resources and expertise from Gt. YarmouthBorough Council, North Norfolk District Council, SuolkCoastal District Council and Waveney District Council, will beresponsible for working along the 220km of coastline in Norfolkand Suolk.Cllr Angie Fitch-Tillett, Chair of the Partnership Board, said:The formation of the partnership is an extremely important stepin how we manage the coast in Norfolk and Suolk. We will work together as equals and I am particularly lookingforward to seeing the joint expertise of the group benet all of theauthorities involved.Together we can take advantage of a larger resource of localknowledgeand a higher degree of eciency. The results will be

positive for all involved partly because the marine environmenttakes no notice of district boundaries.

We will await with interest to see the impact of this new body inregard to the many issues on our coastline.......Ed

Fundraising Cyclists on theirway to Cromer Pier!

Weve just been made aware of a wonderful story connectingaward winning Cromer Pier to it sister Pier in Bournemouth allin the name of fund raising for the Meningitis Trust.

A group of 4 friends have departed Bournemouth Pier yesterday,on their bicycles, and are now on the way to nish their journeyat Cromer Pier. They plan to arrive in Cromer early on Sundayevening.Duncan Trurey, one of the riders, almost lost his son 15 yearsago to Meningitis, so the cause is very close to his heart. Luckilyhis son is now a healthy 21 year old but sadly there are otherswho havent been so lucky. His family has raised a staggering50,000 over the past few years for Meningitis Now, so he is the

best person to interview if you want to know more information. His number is 07831 516002.We will look forward to welcoming the cyclists on Sundayevening in Cromer!
