In 2005, while many spoke of seemingly insurmountable environmental and social challenges I remained hopeful. Hopeful becausewhere others saw a world of problems, Evergreen offered solutions for the world and demonstrated that by working together we can initiate positive change in our urban centres.

Ten years ago, Toronto’s Don Valley Brick Works was described as an eyesore and not much different from any other smudge left byToronto’s industries. In 1997, we joined others to restore the Brick Works, not to simply eliminate an eyesore, but to re-imagine thesite as a jewel in the urban wilderness that offered the possibility of knitting together the past and present to create new natural and cultural landscapes that help create more sustainable cities of the future.

The Bricks Works project is representative of Evergreen’s proven ability to broker change. I believe our success as an organization is intrinsically linked to the power to connect people, governments and community groups with nature and one another. That is whylast year, for example, when the Toronto Waterfront Revitalization Corporation, the government body charged with restoring Toronto’slakeshore, wanted help bringing local residents back to their waterfront, they turned to Evergreen to host public plantings.

After all, Evergreen started fifteen years ago by re-connecting people with nature through the regenerative process of planting treesand starting gardens. Toyota Evergreen Learning Grounds, a program that helps schools create outdoor classrooms, has alone reachedmore than 1,000,000 school children since its inception – that’s more Canadians than the populations of Newfoundland, Prince EdwardIsland or New Brunswick. And we touch others – among them families, municipal planners, politicians and community leaders - throughinitiatives such as Common Grounds, our community stewardship and capacity building program and Home Grounds, our effort to helpindividuals affect environmentally–friendly changes in their own yards.

The renewal, growth and sense of hope that I’ve described would not be possible without the extraordinary contribution of our staffand volunteers. Nor would Evergreen prosper without the very generous support of our individual, foundation, corporate and governmentpartners, our many long-time supporters, as well as those who have just joined us in our work to build greener, healthier cities.

I would also like to thank our Board of Directors for their vision, commitment and hard work. Last year, the organization relied heavily onthe advice and expertise of these individuals during a crucial period in Evergreen’s growth.

Thank you all for your past and present support.

Evergreen was established fifteen years ago with a simple mission: to help restore nature in our cities. When we started in 1991, myapartment was our office, staff meetings consisted of three people and whatever we lacked in resources we made up for with energy, creativity and perseverance. Today, thankfully my kitchen table is no longer our boardroom, but Evergreen’s approach has not changedand we remain motivated by creating healthy, sustainable outdoor spaces.

At our founding, we knew that we could only meet our goals by developing meaningful and lasting relationships with individuals, communities, local institutions and sponsors. By helping build bridges between our partners and nature, we strengthened both andbenefited from working with like-minded supporters who share our vision for revitalizing schools, homes and neighbourhoods acrossCanada. These efforts, combined with innovative programs, our national reach and a record of success, have made Evergreen a leader incommunity building and urban revitalization.

While all of our partners deserve mention and are listed in this report, a few deserve extra attention for their commitment to helpingEvergreen change the way we live in Canada’s cities. For five years, Toyota Canada Inc. and its Dealerships have been instrumental inhelping schools create outdoor classrooms that provide students with healthy places to play, learn and connect with nature. For threeyears, Wal-Mart Canada has been a committed partner, helping us reach educational institutions and community groups across Canada to create greener, more livable spaces. Since 2003, Unilever Canada has helped nurture Canada’s urban aquatic habitats. Another of ourlead sponsors, Home Depot Canada continues to champion stewardship initiatives across the country.

In 2005 we received both the largest single donation in the history of our organization and the largest private gift from an individual. These two new partnerships are crucial in helping us realize Evergreen at the Brick Works, our ambitious $50 million project to revitalizethe Don Valley Brick Works, a collection of 19th century industrial buildings nestled in Toronto’s ravine system. Ontario’s Ministry ofCulture believes in our vision to reconnect people with nature and pledged $10 million towards the centre last June. Robin & DavidYoung and Family pledged $3 million.

These generous gifts are a vote of confidence in Evergreen’s ability to imagine, develop and manage projects on a grand scale. Theyuniquely position us to share the knowledge and experience we gain from this exciting venture to communities across the nation without whom our work would not be possible. We are forever grateful to, and inspired by, the tremendous dedication and passion of the countless volunteers and our community partners who are helping to make our cities greener and more livable.

On Earth Day in 1991, Evergreen held its first event. On this beautiful April day, school children planted 80 saplings by the shores of Lake Ontario. Today, those children are adults and those seedlings have grown into mature trees, but Evergreen remains in some wayunchanged. Our commitment to working with others to empower communities and transform landscapes remains our compass — fifteenyears later.

Evergreen’s Common Grounds program helps communities preserve natural and cultural heritage landscapes, restore degraded areas, and protect public spaces for pleasure, education and recreation. We accomplish this by strategically planting seeds among municipalplanners, politicians and community leaders about the need for greater protection and stewardship of urban green space. Last year wedelivered more than 25 workshops, conference presentations and seminars to over 400 professionals and community leaders in Ontario,Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia.

Our training workshops across Alberta were a great success. Packed with practical strategies to help municipalities green their communities, including developing regional partnerships with other governments and incentives for developers to protect important natural landmarks, they provided the impetus for a partnership with the Suncor Energy Foundation. The Alberta-based resource firm is now helpingEvergreen open an office in Calgary to meet the demand for support voiced by professional planners and community leaders.

2005 also saw Evergreen expand our support for local organizations building healthier communities. Thanks to our partnership withWal-Mart Canada, the Green Grants Program provided nearly 37 organizations with grants totaling $264,000 to support the restorationand ongoing management of woodlands, meadows, wetlands and ravines in urban areas from coast to coast. In Westville, Nova Scotia,we helped restore trees and plants lost in 2004 in the wake of Hurricane Juan and in Whitehorse, Yukon, we’ll help tell the story ofhow First Nations and pioneers used native plant species for well-being and survival.

The Home Depot Foundation and Evergreen partnered last June with Habitat for Humanity Canada to create naturalized gardens at new and existing Habitat homes in Windsor, Ontario. This pilot project provided garden designs and plant materials, as well as educational information for volunteers and new homeowners. Home Depot and Evergreen also partnered to distribute $120,000 to 33community groups engaged in community gardening and habitat creation through the Rebuilding Nature Grant program.

Our relationship with Unilever Canada also continues to assist communities in the stewardship of Canada’s urban aquatic habitats. The Unilever-Evergreen Aquatic Stewardship Grant provided 20 grants, totaling over $105,000, to organizations in ten provinces.

Engaging and educating individuals to create life-long stewards remains a core goal of our work. Whether helping Sarnia, Ontario residents transform a storm water management pond into an ecosystem teeming with wildlife and recreational opportunities or assistingVancouver communities to return native plants to their streetscape, Evergreen provides local communities with do-it-yourself assistance, educational materials and expert planning advice.

6”“I‘m very impressed by the quality and depth of material that Evergreen makes available to

community groups, government agencies and interested citizens. Evergreen has developedeffective, comprehensive and informative programs that creatively bring together a varietyof groups to solve the pressing issue of revitalising and protecting valuable naturalresources within our cities. In my opinion, Evergreen stands out as a non-profitorganization that creatively links together timely and relevant environmental research withapplied programs of community action.

When Brian Heninger visited Calgary’s William Aberhart High School in June 2003, he didn’t anticipate it would grow into a lasting personal commitment to help students create healthy and natural outdoor classrooms.

“I went because I was curious,” says the President of Heninger Toyota. “But when I arrived, I was amazed. There were 300 kids whowere excited to get outside to show the adults what they’d done with the schoolyard. It can’t help but change you.” Heninger has sincevisited eight Calgary elementary and secondary schools and views the partnership between Evergreen and Toyota as an important meansof building his community and his business.

In 2005, Toyota Canada Inc., through Dealerships like Brian Heninger’s, provided $750,000 towards projects affecting nearly 59,000children in 400 schools across Canada. Since 1993, Learning Grounds has provided more than $1 million in funding to help green 1,800 school grounds and engage over 800,000 children. This is in addition to the pioneering research, excellent teacher training and curriculum resources, and highly skilled design support the program also offers.

Last year, this unique educational initiative forged new partnerships with school boards in Winnipeg, Ottawa, Waterloo and the NovaScotia Department of Education. By working with teachers and administrators to create green school grounds that function beautifully asplay areas, natural retreats and teaching facilities, we instill healthy and sustainable practices that touch our youngest environmentalstewards.

Evergreen, with support from the Public Health Agency of Canada, is also building knowledge of how healthier environments createhealthier children. In 2005, researchers examined 60 schools that have implemented the Toyota Evergreen Learning Grounds Program tostudy the impact of green school grounds on children’s play. The survey found natural landscapes support a wider variety of activity, increase play opportunities for those less frequently engaged in physical activity and promote greater awareness of healthy eating.

The research findings were buttressed by another groundbreaking venture in 2005: the development of a national strategy for growinghealthy food on Canada’s school grounds. Funded by the Laidlaw Foundation, the report illustrates how school gardens are an entrypoint for ecological education and promoting healthy lifestyles through improved diets and physical activity. The report is the first stepin creating a series of projects to build awareness of the benefits of school food gardens.

8”“When Toyota Canada was looking for a partner to translate our commitment to community

and the environment into action, we sought an organization that shared our belief in theimportance of community engagement, innovation and results-oriented solutions. Wefound that partner in Evergreen. Since 2000, Evergreen, Toyota Canada and Toyota Dealersacross the country have demonstrated that healthy communities, healthy environments andhealthy businesses are inescapably connected.

Last summer, Vancouver resident Isabelle Fusey took advantage of Evergreen’s unique home consultation program, Evergreen Lawn andGarden Smart, to develop an environment–friendly approach to gardening using native plants. “I would never have planted nativeplants,” says Fusey. “Now I’m adamant about it.”

Fusey says she and her family are sold on the practicality and benefits of this natural approach to gardening and plan to use the samegreen principles to enhance the landscape at their vacation property. Fusey even joined the Native Plant Society of British Columbia.

Evergreen introduced Evergreen Lawn and Garden Smart in 2005, with support from Vancity and the Greater Vancouver RegionalDistrict, as a pilot, fee-for-service project in Vancouver. Designed to help replace the sound of a lawnmower with the song of a bird, the stench of lawn chemicals with the smell of native flowers and herbs, the program helps individuals create healthier home land-scapes that are pesticide-free and need less water. In addition, Evergreen Lawn and Garden Smart solutions are less expensive, easier tocare for and healthier for families and pets.

Evergreen Lawn and Garden Smart’s success confirms there is untapped demand for natural methods of gardening. In 2005, our gardenplanners and horticultural experts held 130 consultations. That number is expected to more than double in 2006.

In the future, Evergreen Lawn and Garden Smart will offer training and workshops on organic gardening techniques and introduce servicesto make native plant species more widely available through buying clubs and local nurseries. Eventually Evergreen plans to set up anatural, organic garden centre and extend its services to cities across Canada.

Evergreen’s web site supplements these hands-on services with a range of how-to guides and educational tools to encourage environment-friendly lawn care practices at home. Among the available resources are garden tips from Evergreen media partners Canadian GardeningMagazine and HGTV, advice on creating woodland, meadow, prairie or wetland habitat gardens and our Native Plant Database that providesinteractive information about native tree, shrub, wildflower, grass, aquatic and vine species across Canada.

Creatingsafe, pesticide-free home landscapes

2005 HIGHLIGHTS

• Evergreen Lawn and Garden Smart was formally launched at the BC Home and Garden Show in February

• Our horticultural experts and garden planners held 130 consultations at Vancouver homes

• District of West Vancouver became the first municipality in Canada to offer Evergreen Lawn and Garden Smart to their residents at a subsidized rate as part of their water conservation and waste management education programming.

Toronto’s Don Valley Brick Works is a natural wonder in the heart of the city. It tells of the people and places that transformed ourland. And soon, Evergreen at the Brick Works will connect our past with our present, our natural heritage with our urban lives and people with each other to create a new vision for living in Canada’s cities.

Evergreen, with the City of Toronto and Toronto and Region Conservation, is working to preserve and transform this industrial landmark into an interactive centre that will open the door for school children, families and community groups to become delighted, engaged and educated through compelling stories about nature, culture and community.

Last year, Evergreen worked with architectsAlliance, heritage consultants and green designers to develop a Master Plan for Evergreen at the Brick Works. We started the process by asking neighbours, heritage and environmental groups, city agencies and park users fortheir advice and ideas. Our conversations with more than 700 stakeholders helped us identify the components necessary to balancecommunity needs and desires with practical considerations. Our Master Plan now places us on firm footing to deliver meaningfulprogramming to the community.

Evergreen also continues to build alliances and develop year-round programs and attractions for Evergreen at the Brick Works. Togetherwith some of Canada’s most innovative non-profit organizations and businesses, including YMCA, Outward Bound Canada, Universityof Toronto and the Gardiner Museum of Ceramic Art, we are creating a new model for community development and engagement thatintegrates the best economic, cultural and environmental ideas into one location.

Last June, the Ontario Ministry of Culture embraced this vision for the future of Canada’s largest city by committing $10 milliontowards the project. Those funds will help Evergreen develop a children’s garden, create leadership programs for at-risk youth andrestore the original buildings to create a unique community centre with interactive exhibits focusing on the geology, history and ecology of the site.

Ontario’s support, along with generous gifts by Founding Patron Robin & David Young and Family, the Salamander Foundationand the Federation of Canadian Municipalities, among others, puts us on target to raise the $50 million required to complete the project.

Evergreen’s growth continued in 2005 with a 30% increase in full-time equivalent staff over 2004. We now have 62 full-time and part-time staff with offices in Toronto, Vancouver and Calgary, and programming staff in eight major Canadian cities. Our incrementalexpansion strategy based on the Programming Associate model has proven to be very effective. It allows us to deliver on-the-groundprograms in partnership with schools, community groups and municipalities without incurring the overhead cost of running an office in every region. We also increased Human Resources capacity for the Evergreen at the Brick Works capital project as we entered into theMaster Planning phase of the project. In the fall of 2005, a campaign director was hired to lead our $50 million capital campaign.

Evergreen ended the 2005 fiscal year with a moderate surplus of $4,864. Revenues for core operating increased by 2% and expenses by3% over 2004. This incremental growth reflects our current strategy of maintaining core programming activities at a manageable levelwhile undertaking the development of a $50 million capital project. Deferred capital contributions of $1.8 million and deferred costs of$1.1 million were recorded in 2005 for Evergreen at the Brick Works.
