22nd May, 2020 Term 2 Week 4

We acknowledge the traditional custodians of this land and pay our respects

to Elders past, present and future

Back to school! As you are all probably well aware students are expected to return to school full time as of Monday 25th May. The Premier and Education Minister have advised that “a return to full-time face-to-face teaching and learning is crucial for the education progress of every child in NSW from Kindergarten to Year 12” in a media release on Tuesday.

What does this mean for students?

School students do not need to follow strict adult physical distancing guidelines, but should follow good hygiene practices like:

Regularly washing hands

Avoiding sharing drinks or food

Coughing or sneezing into your elbow, or a tissue which should be discarded immediately

Maintaining physical distancing from teachers and school staff.

All NSW public schools have received the following strict instructions concerning school attendance, school activities and procedures for dropping children off and collecting them of an afternoon.

School attendance

From Monday 25th May all students must attend school full time. The ‘Learning from Home’ mode of education delivery will not be continuing from next week. Students who are sick should stay home as always and provide a note to the office explaining their absence as soon as possible. Students with long term illnesses or who are immunocompromised must provide a medical certificate to support this and have parents contact the school unless they have previously done so.

Students cannot be kept home because a family member is immunocompromised unless this is supported by a medical certificate. Again, parents must ring the school to discuss options for their child’s learning under these circumstances.

The Premier has made it clear to schools that students who stay at home without meeting the above criteria are to be considered as unexplained absences and must be followed up with the Home/School Liaison Officer and the police. I urge you to contact the school if you have any concerns or queries regarding the above.

All students should be at school unless:

They have a medical certificate which states that they are unable to return to school due to an ongoing medical condition

They are currently unwell.

If your child is unwell, do not send them to school. If they are unwell at school, you or your nominated emergency contact will need to collect them immediately. Please ensure your child’s contact details are up to date.

If a student is absent without a medical reason for more than three days, this will be recorded as an unauthorised absence and will be followed up by the school.

School activities

Teachers will continue to follow the same school curriculum with the exception of some activities that can’t go ahead for now.

What children can do:

Use the school library

Attend normal classes with their peers and classroom teacher

What students can’t do:

School incursions and excursions including camps

Inter-school activities (debating, inter-school sport)

In-school activities requiring parent or other volunteers

School assemblies

School grounds

There should be no visitors to school sites unless they are essential. Parents and carers are reminded to drop students off in the morning and pick them up of an afternoon without entering the school grounds. Parents are reminded of the importance to not congregate.

Wherever possible, P&C and parent/carer/teacher meetings should be conducted online.

Out of school hours care can continue to operate.

Thank you!

I would like to thank the parent/carer community and the amazing, dedicated, caring and professional staff at CPS who have worked so hard and have been so supportive of each other to ensure we navigated our way through these extremely challenging times in such a positive way. The support and encouragement we have received from parents has been tremendous, we couldn’t have done it without you!

We look forward to the students returning full time next week and more restrictions being lifted when it is deemed safe to do so. If you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to phone the school on 48 321 213 and arrange to speak with Mr Whittington.

Hugo visits CPS! Miss O’Neill has a new addition at her house, a beautiful little fluffy puppy named Hugo. He has been an absolute hit at school when he has visited us in the past two weeks. I’m sure we will see Hugo again very soon if you haven’t had the chance to meet him yet.

Halla Price-Jones, Jack Bilsborough, Hugo, Lily Briggs and

Koa Haynes played together in the playground.

Faith Riles loved having cuddles with Hugo.

Stage 1: Zoo Plan Students in Stage 1 were recently given the task of designing a zoo. The students worked in small groups to talk to each other and share their ideas before putting their plan on to paper. What a great way to learn about collaboration and listening while being creative at the same time!

Some Stage 1 girls put their ideas together on some large

paper for the zoo they have designed.

Sam Saville, Kai Fowler and Jackson Winsor worked

collaboratively to design and draw their exciting plan for a zoo.

Ben Webster completed this very effective artwork at home

using lines to create depth and movement.

Ginny Webster created a delightful snowman, who knows,

she may be able to make a real snowman soon!

Staffing Mrs Hannah Graham will be working part time for the rest of 2020 (Wednesday, Thursday and Friday) and will be joined by Mrs Mel Stepien on 1/2 Emu on Monday and Tuesday of each week. Mrs Stepien has worked at CPS in a casual capacity for a couple of years now and knows the students and school very well. Mrs Stepien is the mother of Olivia in Year 1.

Mr Greg Atfield will be taking 3/4 Koala as Mr Bojan Nedanoski is currently on leave. You will also see Miss Phoebe Bell back at school this term as unfortunately her European adventures have had to be put on hold due to COVID-19. Thank you Mr Atfield and Miss Bell for ensuring there is consistency in the school for the benefit of all students.

All other staff members will continue as normal.

Yours in Public Education,

Michael Whittington Principal

Kirstie O’Neill Assistant Principal

Greg Atfield Relieving Assistant Principal
