2017 & 2018 Enrolment Information Required Shortly, the school will be required to lodge with the Department of Education its anticipated numbers for 2017 and 2018. It is very important, particularly in 2017, that the anticipated numbers closely match the actual enrolment numbers. We require your help to get it right to ensure that next year we can again get off to a good start with classes formed and teachers available and ready to start teaching on day one.

Therefore, if you know of any child who will be enrolling in Kindergarten next year, or the following year, would you please list their names below and return the slip to school?

Please include every eligible child you believe will be enrolling at Crookwell Public even if you think that someone else may also include the child you are thinking of. We would prefer to have student names duplicated than omitted from the list.

This information will also prove very useful when sending invitations to the ‘Flying Start’ program which helps to determine a child’s level of readiness for school and will operate throughout Terms 2 and 3 of this year.

Infants Excursion to Canberra Theatre 10/6/16

On Friday 10th June students in Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 2 will be travelling to Canberra Theatre to watch the live production of ‘Hippo-Hippo’.

‘Hippo Hippo’ is a big, new musical adventure for kids based on the international bestselling book series: There’s a Hippopotamus on Our Roof Eating Cake. The production features a large, imaginary, loveable pink Hippopotamus. It tells the story of a little girl and her Hippo friend, as she goes through her early childhood. There’s a Hippopotamus on Our Roof Eating Cake was first published in 1980. Since then this series of books has become one of Australia’s most iconic and best loved children’s publications.

Students will be leaving school at approximately 10:00am and returning to school by 4:00pm. Children who normally catch a bus home from school will need ensure they have alternate arrangements to be collected at 4:00pm at Crookwell Public School. Children will need to bring a packed recess and lunch in separate plastic bags clearly labelled with their names. Disposable drink containers are a handy idea on this excursion.

The total cost for this excursion is $40 per child. This includes ticket and bus fare. To assist parents in making the payment for this excursion, a payment plan has been set up: First instalment of $20 per child due on 8th April. Second instalment of $20 per child due on 6th May.

If there are any questions relating to this excursion please feel free to contact the school or come and talk to one of the infants staff members.

Many thanks Infants Teachers - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Help Wanted with Covering Books If there is anyone available to help cover school readers that would be wonderful, with best efforts the office ladies cannot get through the volume and would dearly love to get these out to our dear little petals as soon as possible.

Welcome to the NSW Premier's Reading Challenge The Premier’s Reading Challenge aims to encourage a love of reading for leisure and pleasure in students, and to enable them to experience quality literature. It is not a competition but a challenge for each student to read, to read more and to read more widely. The Premier’s Reading Challenge (PRC) is available to all NSW students in Kindergarten to Year 9, in government, independent, Catholic and home schools.

The Challenge this year opens on the 7th March 2016 and closes on the 19th August 2016.

At Crookwell Public all students in Kindergarten through to Year 2 are involved in the initiative and all their books will be read within individual classes and recorded online by their class teachers.

Students who want to continue with the Challenge in Years 3-6 are able to borrow the required books during library time and must record their own reading logs online. This process will be demonstrated to the students by teachers. Primary students must complete their online Student Reading Records by 19th August 2016.

Students must read a varying number of books from a prescribed list of books.

How many books must I read? Challenge Number of books needed to complete the challenge K-2 3-4 5-6 Minimum number of PRC books for your challenge

30 20 20

Maximum number of personal choice books (books not on the prescribed list)

**Note ** you can only enter two books from any one series. The rest count as personal choice even if on the prescribed list.

What books can I read? A list of books can be accessed at the NSW Premier’s Reading Challenge website at https://online.det.nsw.edu.au/prc/booklist/home.html.

If your child is in Years 3-6 and you would like your child to participate in the Premier’s Reading Challenge please fill out the form below and return to school as soon as possible. If your child is in K-2 then your child is already participating in the challenge. If you would like any further information you can access the website on the above address or please ask Mrs Davies or Miss Kemp.

Year 6 Chocolate Fundraiser Reminder Our Cadbury® Fundraiser drive is now near completion and the final stages of collection are underway. Officially, the Fundraiser closes on Friday 8th April and we are asking sellers to make sure all money and unsold products are accounted for and returned on time. If you are having trouble selling those last few chocolates please return them to school and we will organise a day where students and staff can purchase the remaining chocolates.

Thank you for supporting this fundraising initiative. Year 6 Fundraising Committee

CPS Primary Cross Country Carnival The Crookwell Public School Cross Country Carnival is scheduled for next Thursday 7th April at Todkill Park. The results from this carnival will determine who progresses to the District Carnival at Goulburn on Friday 27th May.

All students from Year 2 (if they are turning 8 this year and can run 2km) to Year 6 will be participating on the day. Students are to come to school as normal and will catch the bus to Todkill Park.

The primary children will be split in to their age groups and competing in their age specific event. 8/9 year olds run 2km, 10 year olds run 2km and 11/12 year olds run 3km.

All children will need: • Comfortable footwear they can run in • Hat • Sunscreen • Bottle of water • Warm clothing • Picnic rug or blanket to sit on • Packed lunch

As you know it can get bitterly cold at Todkill Park so please dress children appropriately as there is no cover from the weather if it turns nasty.

The carnival will be finished at 2:45pm with students catching the bus back to school in time for normal buses and pick up. Parent helpers on the day would be much appreciated.

Please note the bus fare will be covered by Crookwell Public School’s sporting grant making this free of charge for the students attending.

If your child is unable to participate in the cross-country carnival or you wish to transport your child to the grounds rather than have them travel on the bus, please notify the school by phoning 48321213.

Thank you, Bojan Nedanoski What is Anaphylaxis? Anaphylaxis is a severe and sudden allergic reaction. It occurs when a person is exposed to an allergen (such as food or an insect bite). Reactions usually begin within minutes of exposure and can progress rapidly over a period of up to two hours or more. Anaphylaxis is potentially life threatening and always requires an emergency response. Fortunately anaphylactic reactions are uncommon and usually preventable.

At Crookwell Public School there are staff and students who suffer from severe allergic reactions and in order to provide a safe environment our policy is to restrict access to allergens.

ALL students are asked NOT to bring

nuts, peanut butter or Nutella to school.

If your child suffers from allergies the school needs to be informed. There is information available from the school office, along with forms that need to be filled in by parents of students who have been identified as being anaphylactic, ever been hospitalized due to anaphylaxis, or have been issued with an Epipen.

If you need clarification, please contact the school. Thank you for your support and understanding in this matter.

Term 2 Sport- Gymnastics During this term primary students were fortunate enough to attend the local swimming pool for swimming sessions. This was made possible due to the beautiful weather and the contribution of the Sporting School Grant.

In Term 2 Mr Vaughn Edmonds will be visiting Crookwell Public School, he is a qualified gymnastics instructor with many years experience. Mr Edmonds will be working with the whole school in individual class blocks, providing the students with an opportunity to develop their gymnastic skills. These sessions will be held on Wednesdays for infants students and Thursdays for primary students. This program will be running for the duration of Term 2, the majority of the program will be again funded through the Sporting School Grant. As a result of this, the cost of the program has been significantly reduced. The cost per student for the gymnastics program is $5.00, this will cover your child for the entire 10 week program.

This program will be starting on Wednesday 27th April for infants students and Thursday 28th April for primary students.

Please note: Children are unable to attend this program until their permission note and money have been returned to school. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

District Rugby League Trials The Crookwell/Goulburn District Rugby league trials were held at Memorial Oval recently in preparation for our upcoming Zone and South Coast trials. Blake McCarten, Max Price, Mathew Lang, Sean Ward, Cameron Herd, Zakaia Lewis and Mason Kearney were the Crookwell representatives that were hoping to make their way into the team and on to the next level. All the boys played their hearts out as they always do and they should be very proud of themselves for their effort and sportsmanship. I am very pleased to say that Blake and Max have made the District Open team while Sean, Mason, Cameron and Mathew have made the Under 11’s District team.

Thank you to the parents who escorted the boys to the trial and cheered from the sidelines. A special thanks to Kylie Ward for being our first aid person. Your assistance was greatly appreciated. Good luck boys at the Zone trial next Monday in Goulburn.

What Wonderful Hockey Talent! Four Crookwell Public School students have been selected in the Goulburn/Crookwell PSSA District Hockey Teams. Bridgette Anable and Georja Seaman have earned a place in the girls team while Jesse Croker and Jimmy Cunningham were selected for the boys team.

Congratulations players and best of luck for your future games! Pink Stumps Day Our school’s Student Forum has chosen to support the McGrath Foundation by participating in Pinks Stumps Day next Friday 8th April. A team of Year 6 students has volunteered to play against a team of teachers in what should prove to be a very entertaining match! The McGrath Foundation provides support for families facing a breast cancer experience through the funding of Breast Care Nurses nationally as well as increasing breast awareness in young Australians.

All students are asked to wear pink clothing on the day and bring along a gold coin donation to support the cause. The greatly anticipated match will take place after lunch with students from Kindergarten through to Year 6 making up a crowd of spectators that will no doubt be entertained by skill and ……well, what else remains to be seen!

During this one-day event, author, educator, and parenting and resilience specialist Maggie Dent will present three sessions to inspire and inform parents and people who work with children and adolescents. Maggie is the author of seven books and a passionate advocate for the healthy, common-sense raising of children in order to strengthen families and communities. A former teacher and counsellor, Maggie is a passionate, positive voice for children of all ages.

9am-10.30am: The Importance of Calmness, Silence and Stillness

In this seminar, you will learn about the main causes of childhood stress, anxiety and disruptive behaviour and what you can do to prevent it. Maggie will explore how to calm hyperactive children, how to change emotional states and what are the best ways to maximise the brain’s capacity to learn in a safe environment.

11.30am-1pm : Boys, Boys, Boys: Understanding, Nurturing and Connecting to Today’s Boys.

In this seminar, Maggie will share her insights, practical suggestions and passion from parenting her own four sons, teaching in high schools for over 17 years, counselling troubled lads and working with men in her men’s-only seminars. She is a champion of boys and wants you to be one too.

2pm-3.30pm: Saving our Adolescents

From Maggie’s extensive experience of working with adolescents for more than 30 years she has created an innovative, dynamic seminar for families, schools and communities to build resilience and connectedness in 12-25-year-olds. Adolescents need adult allies to help them navigate the tricky waters of the teenage years – the art of guiding, and encouraging empowerment while strengthening self-esteem and personal autonomy is one that can be learned.
