CropTec Welcome

Welcome to CropTec 2015

Improve efficacy and stay competitive

Elisabeth Mork-Eidem, Head of Events, Briefing Media

Stephen Howe, Development Director, CropTec

On behalf of Briefing MediaAgriculture, welcome to CropTec2015. Times may be challengingin the arable sector, but we hopethe in-depth discussions you can

have at CropTec with our seminar speakersand experts on stands will help you plan apositive future for your business.

CropTec is designed to help everyone inthe arable industry, particularly growers, toprofit from knowledge transfer and to tapinto the very latest information on a wholerange of arable topics. We have 18 leadingspeakers as part of our in-depth seminarprogramme, who will be covering a range oftechnical, practical and business issues.

We have worked hard, based on yourfeedback, to develop the event for this year. You will find several new features, includingthe Spraying Technology Hub, and we arealways keen to hear your views about newareas or topics which we should include.

This year, we are also delighted to bewelcoming the industry’s next generation, who will be taking part in our Student Forumon Wednesday. It is designed to inspire andsupport students pursuing a career in thearable sector, and it is an event we are proudto organise and host during CropTec.

CropTec is only part of our business’sagriculture focus, alongside Lamma Show(which returns to this venue on January 20and 21, 2016), the British Farming Awards,Arable Farming, Farmers Guardian and DairyFarmer. We also run FGInsight.com, theLammaXchange machinery sales website andAgrimoney.com.

We focus on producing high qualityinformation and events for the farmingsector, and are always delighted to hear yourideas for further development. Please do getin touch with me on [email protected], and I very much hopeyou enjoy your visit to CropTec 2015.

Welcome to CropTec 2015. This is the third year for thisspecialist, technical eventdesigned to help all thoseinvolved in the arable

industry profit from knowledge exchange. Itprovides the ideal time to take stock andexplore the latest technology designed toboost output, and reduce unit costs.

The past year has been another roller-coaster ride for UK arable farmers. On thedownside, falling prices for grain andoilseeds, resulting from higher globalproduction and the strength of sterling, have increased pressure on profitability and the currency effect has reduced support payments further.

On the upside, for many the weather has been kinder, leading to a reduction indisease and higher yields. While falling oilprices have helped to ease the pressure oncashflow by reducing crop establishment anddrying costs.

However, despite UK farmers’ rapidresponse to market signals following the

introduction of direct payments, many of the changes taking place in the industryare outside their control. Those includefurther restrictions on the use of some keyagrochemicals serving only to limit output, and the uncertainty about Europe and itsCommon Agricultural Policy.

The EU’s regulatory regime is hinderinginnovation, output and the ability of UKfarmers to compete in an increasingly globalmarket place. It is vital farmers and decision-makers driving UK production appreciate theimpact of those changes and CropTec’s newSpraying Technology Hub has been created todo just that. It highlights ways to improvingefficacy and compliance while dealing withthe latest and future legislation.

All of CropTec’s technical exhibits andseminars are designed to help growers contain unit costs in order to remaincompetitive. It is all focused on providingprofessional advice as an essential catalyst forprofitable arable farming, whatever barriers toproduction our politicians, the weather orfickle commodity markets put in its path.

Due to reduced availability of products and key changes in sprayinglegislation, there has never been a more appropriate time for the industry to

focus on crop protection products and their application. This is why, for 2015, CropTec has introduced a spraying technology and advice area whichincludes outdoor spraying demonstrations. Included in the Spraying Technology Hub will becommentaries and presentations on latest buffer zone information from our exhibitors; how

to avoid drift; approved stewardship schemes and safe disposal of washings.

The prime objective in developing this device is tosimplify and speed up checking of nozzles duringa sprayer test. An approved National SprayerTesting Scheme technician may well use multipledevices, typically one per boom section, locatethem under the nozzles and then switch thesprayer on.

While the devices are reaching equilibriumother tasks may be undertaken. It is then a simple taskto simply walk along the boom and record the readings from eachdevice. Additionally we can see many individual farmers will want to use the device to self-check their nozzle prior to the start of the ‘season’ or before the sprayer test is due.
