ON-SITE PROJECTSRBc canadian Painting competition

Established in 1999, the RBC Canadian Painting Competition recognizes and supports Canada’s emerging artists. Submissions for this annual competition are accepted from professional, practicing visual Canadian artists who are in the first five years of their careers. The winner and two honourable mentions will be announced at The Power Plant at a gala event on November 29th. The winner will receive an award of $25,000 and the two honourable mentions will each receive a prize of $15,000. Along with past winners, the winning painting will become part of RBC’s Canadian art collection comprised of more than 4,000 works of art.

BMW Art carAs the official vehicle of Art Toronto 2012, BMW Canada is proud to present American artist Robert Rauschenberg’s 1986 Art Car – the BMW 635 CSi. Rauschenberg was first to use other artists’ works which he processed by means of photographic techniques and projected onto the car. The associations between the narrative elements are grouped along the surfaces, composing a virtual story for the observer to behold. The Art Car designed by Rauschenberg was intended solely as an exhibit and was never driven on the road or in a race. BMW Canada is extremely proud to bring Rauschenberg’s Art Car to Toronto as a means of sharing one of the company’s many cultural initiatives with Canadians.

AXA ART: caring for collectionsThe AXA ART booth at Art Toronto aims to be your source for collection management information. This year, our in- booth presentation – an irreparably damaged, life- size photogram by Adam Fuss from his series My Ghost – serves to bring critical attention to the importance of proper handling for works of art and collectibles. We look forward to welcoming visitors at Art Toronto to the AXA ART booth for conversations on proper preparation and handling.

canadian Art Now - Aerials: Prisons, Vistas, InfinitiesCanadian Art returns to Art Toronto with Canadian Art Now, a series of exhibitions highlighting unique aspects of contemporary Canadian art. The new exhibition, Aerials: Prisons, Vistas, Infinities, brings together artists Alain Paiement (Friday), Ohotaq Mikkigak (Saturday) and Jennifer Rose Sciarrino (Sunday) with works that show the diverse uses and meanings of elevated viewpoints or perspectives.

Great books on canadian ArtThe Canadian Art Museum Director’s Organization CAMDO/ODMAC invites you to browse and buy books about your favourite artists and exhibitions; from the most ephemeral to deluxe coffee table books to original artists’ projects. Watch for announcements throughout the weekend as CAMDO/ODMAC hosts book signings with some of Canada’s most respected artists, curators and writers. Published by the public galleries of Canada, these monographs, anthologies and exhibition catalogues are as exceptional in design as they are in content.

Vectors: commerce by Artists Mobile Reading LoungeGendai Gallery‘s mobile project Vectors in collaboration with Art Metropole, jointly present Vectors: Commerce by Artists Mobile Reading Lounge. Inventive implementations of a mobile unit will be deployed to activate and animate the host site. Take a seat and browse through the Canadian and international publications and editions collected around the topic of Commerce by Artists by Art Metropole.

Beyond GeographyBeyond Geography is a thought- provoking exhibition of video work and installations that open the question about what kind of art audiences expect to be produced by a diverse group of artists who happen to have lived in Asia or are of Asian descent. When looking at specific materials used by these artists, are we more or less inclined to support or change our perceptions of ‘Asia’? Co-curated by Shengtian Zheng, Managing Editor of Yishu Journal of Contemporary Chinese Art, Taipei/Vancouver and Katherine Don, Director of Red Box Studio, Beijing.

The Gamelatron – Taylor KuffnerThe Gamelatron is the world’s first and only fully robotic gamelan orchestra. Commissioned for the entrance to Art Toronto 2012, The Gamelatron is a site-specific contemporary artwork, it is a kinetic sculpture that uses Balinese Gamelan instruments and robotic mallets to create an immersive sound installation. The Gamelatron is a collaboration between Taylor Kuffner and The League of Electronic Musical Urban Robots (LEMUR).
