Selection Criteria
PURPOSE AND USE OF PROCESS INDUSTRY PRACTICES
In an effort to minimize the cost of process industry facilities, this Practice hasbeen prepared from the technical requirements in the existing standards of majorindustrial users, contractors, or standards organizations. By harmonizing thesetechnical requirements into a single set of Practices, administrative, application, andengineering costs to both the purchaser and the manufacturer should be reduced. Whilethis Practice is expected to incorporate the majority of requirements of most users, individual applications may involve requirements that will be appended to and takeprecedence over this Practice. Determinations concerning fitness for purpose andparticular matters or application of the Practice to particular project or engineeringsituations should not be made solely on information contained in these materials. Theuse of trade names from time to time should not be viewed as an expression ofpreference but rather recognized as normal usage in the trade. Other brands having thesame specifications are equally correct and may be substituted for those named. AllPractices or guidelines are intended to be consistent with applicable laws andregulations including OSHA requirements. To the extent these Practices or guidelinesshould conflict with OSHA or other applicable laws or regulations, such laws orregulations must be followed. Consult an appropriate professional before applying oracting on any material contained in or suggested by the Practice.
This Practice is subject to revision at any time by the responsible Function Teamand will be reviewed every 5 years. This Practice will be revised, reaffirmed, orwithdrawn. Information on whether this Practice has been revised may be found athttp://www.pip.org.

1. Introduction
1.1 Purpose
The purpose of this Practice is to provide requirements for the selection of industrialcoating systems.
1.2 Scope
1.2.1 This Practice includes the criteria for the selection of industrial coatingsystems for insulated and uninsulated substrates of structural steel, equipment, vessels, tanks, and piping.
1.2.2 This Practice does not include criteria for the selection of industrial coatingsystems for insulated items in cyclic temperature service, internal linings, underground substrates, maintenance coating, architectural coatings, or colorselection.
2. References
The latest edition (or edition indicated) of the following industry standards and referencesshall be considered an integral part of this Practice. Short titles will be used herein whenappropriate.

3. Definitions
For the purposes of this Practice, the following definitions apply:
Contractor: Party responsible for the surface preparation and application of external coatings
Moderate Environment: Industrial and chemical plant area subject to moderate externalcorrosion

Process Industry Practices Page 3 of 3
Offshore Environment: Facilities and structures built in and above seawater
Owner: Principle end user
Purchaser: Owner or owner’s authorized agent
Severe Environment: Heavy industrial and chemical plant area subject to aggressive externalcorrosion
Severe/Seacoast Environment: Within five miles of coast/sea water and in the presence ofheavy industrial plants subject to aggressive external corrosion
4. General
4.1 Coating materials shall be as specified in this Practice, PIP CTSE1000, andPIP CTSE2000.
4.2 Coating materials used in the same system shall be supplied by the samemanufacturer, unless otherwise approved by the Purchaser.
4.3 Coating systems shall be selected in accordance with the Appendix, unless otherwiseapproved by the Purchaser.
4.4 Surface preparation, application, and inspection of external coatings shall be inaccordance with PIP CTSE1000 and the referenced PIP CTSE2000 data sheets.
4.5 Coating systems for uninsulated substrates operating at temperatures < 200°F (93°C)listed in the Appendix are selected for a minimum of 10 years service life before 3%to 5% breakdown of the topcoat and active rusting begins as indicated inNACE 96 Paper No. 477.
4.6 Coating systems for insulated substrates listed in the Appendix are selected inaccordance with the guidelines outlined in NACE Standard RP0198-98.
4.7 Coating systems for uninsulated substrates operating at temperatures ≥ 200°F (93°C)listed in the Appendix are selected on the basis of commercially available materials.
4.8 Safety colors shall conform to ANSI Z535.1, unless otherwise specified by thePurchaser.
4.9 Coated fasteners shall be used if specified in the purchase documents.
