Welcome......to the new brochure for Community Learning and Skills.
As we all know, the learning and employment landscape has been transformed by the impact of the Covid-19 crisis. Understandably, many people are anxious about what the future may hold, with challenging social circumstances for many and potential economic uncertainty on the horizon. Community Learning and Skills are here to support you. Our wide-ranging curriculum can help you with the skills to apply for new jobs, develop digital skills to keep in touch with family or work from home and offer you some great classes to support your health and wellbeing.
In recent months, we have responded to the challenge of a changed world with an innovative new programme and new online classes our learners tell us are working well for them. However, we understand that not everything can be easily taught online. We are therefore still offering courses in key subjects such as English, ESOL, Maths, Digital Skills, health and wellbeing in venues across the county. Please be reassured that the health and safety of you and our team is paramount so we will be following the latest Government guidance on social distancing and keeping you safe while you learn.
Whichever subject you choose to study, this is a great opportunity for you to learn something new, build your confidence, meet new people, gain qualifications or further your career; above all, enjoy the experience.

Covid-19The past few months have been challenging for us all. Cumbria Community Learning and Skills prides itself on delivering high quality face to face courses across the county. Just like many organisations, we have had to adapt. Back in May we launched our new online learning courses and workshops delivered via Zoom which have proven to be popular amongst learners. You will see that we have continued to offer some courses and workshops online to ensure our learning opportunities are available to all. As we begin to open our doors delivering courses in local venues throughout Cumbria, we want to reassure you that all courses will run in accordance with the latest government Covid-19 guidelines. However, if you have any concerns about joining a course, please contact your local centre who will be more than happy to talk you through how we are operating in these unprecedented times.As some uncertainty still remains, course dates, times and venues advertised could change - please visit our website or contact your local centre for the most up to date course information.We look forward to welcoming you soon.

Family Learning Our free courses are a great way to help parents and carers find out more
about how to support their child’s learning and development, whilst brushing up on their own English and Maths skills. Covering a wide range of subjects, the
courses provide insights into what children are learning in school and nursery, with plenty of ideas and resources to follow up at home. Friendly and accessible, Family Learning offers fun opportunities for adults and children to learn both independently and together. Contact your local centre for more information.
What we offer
English and ESOL Do you want to improve
your English skills while gaining a qualification that could help you in the future? It doesn’t matter if you are a beginner, English isn’t your first language, or you are looking to gain your GCSE qualification. We offer a wide range of courses to suit every ability.

Employability Employability courses can
support you to ultimately secure and sustain work. They also support progression for further learning, providing an entry point for you to gain a qualification within a short timeframe and give you the confidence to start your learning journey. Employability courses enable you to improve your confidence, learn skills relevant to employment and personal development to help you then make informed career and progression choices.
Digital Skills We all need digital skills
and to feel comfortable using a wide range of different electronic devices, from cameras to tablets as well as laptops and PCs. The ability to access the digital world has become really important in everyday life, whether it be to make an appointment, pay bills, search for a job or keep in touch with friends and family online. We have a range of courses suitable for all levels. You can gain expertise in Microsoft Office software and there are short courses specifically aimed at providing you with the knowledge and skills you need to use ICT.
Arts and Crafts Our classes will give you
the opportunity to learn new skills and techniques in your area of interest, whilst pushing you to explore your creativity and develop your own individual style. Our courses will give you the knowledge necessary to create something amazing. From drawing, painting, upholstery, needlecraft to jewellery making.
We offer classes at different levels and can support you whether you are a novice who would like to learn the basics or someone who needs to refresh themselves with more advanced techniques. We have courses to suit all needs and abilities.

Maths Are you looking to improve
your career prospects by improving your Maths knowledge
and skills? CLAS can offer a range of courses to meet the needs of individual learners from Entry Level Maths Skills and Functional Skills to consolidate prior learning and refresh your knowledge. Learners then progress through personalised paths to ensure that each meet their own potential. We also offer Functional Skills at Levels 1 and 2 and are able to offer GCSE Maths to those learners who have either developed, or already have, the underpinning knowledge and skills required to succeed.
LLDD - Learners with Learning
Difficulties/Disabilities We have a large and varied programme for people with learning difficulties, physical disabilities, sensory impairments or mental health difficulties. Our programmes are developed in partnership with organisations to meet national and local priorities in supporting vulnerable adults looking to develop Independent Living Skills. We can assist with gaining confidence, developing skills, increasing independence and working towards employment.
Health and Wellbeing
Whether you want to improve your body or mind, we have a range of courses that can help. You will learn techniques which can help promote a feeling of wellbeing and reduce stress. Our experienced and qualified tutors cater for all levels of ability.
Languages We offer a range of
European languages from French to Russian, often taught by native speakers to enhance the learner experience. We are able to support families with development of language skills too, this year we have introduced courses such as Family French and Support your child with French (this applies to a range of languages). The focus is on families working together in a fun learning environment to build basic conversational skills. We can offer language lessons from introductory, through beginner, improver to intermediate and upper intermediate levels providing lots of stretch and challenge for our learners.

How to join your Zoom class
1. When you enrol on the course, you will be given instructions how to download the Zoom app.
2. Before the start of your course the tutor will send you joining instructions. Do not give these details to anyone else.
3. Follow the link in the email from your tutor, on the stated day and time. You will be entered into a virtual waiting room, where you will be given access to the session by the tutor.

Further information on FeesCurrent fees are published in our brochure and on the website. These prices are subject to change. The total price quoted is the amount payable in order to secure a course place. This includes tuition costs, examination fees (where applicable) and in some cases additional costs which relate to the particular course. Other optional materials, which may be associated with the course, are available for purchase as identified in the course outline. Unless details are provided in the course outline, you are advised not to buy equipment, books or materials until after the first session.
By signing the enrolment you are self-declaring that you fit the appropriate category of eligibility. All enrolments are subject to final verification and approval by Community Learning and Skills. Should the concession selected not meet our terms, you will be contacted in order that your enrolment can be corrected. You will be asked to pay for any course fees where concessions are not permitted.
Refund PolicyOnce a course has begun, we will only consider refund requests in exceptional personal or family circumstances. However, if the refund affects the continued viability of the course then Community Learning and Skills reserves the right to refuse the refund. If you need to withdraw from a course before it begins, we will process refund requests as follows: • If the request is made more than eight weeks before the course starts, a full refund will be
returned. • If the request is made less than eight weeks and more than one week before the course
starts, a full refund less a £10 cancellation fee will be returned. • No refunds will be made if you withdraw from a course less than seven days before the start.
Learning SupportLearning Support is provided to meet the needs of learners who have an identified learning difficulty and/or disability. If you feel you are eligible for this support or require further information then please contact your Community Learning Centre.
Course viabilityPlease note that the running of each course is considered on individual merit and Community Learning and Skills reserves the right to withdraw or cancel a programme whenever its viability cannot be assured. Some courses may be viable with smaller numbers, whilst others may require larger groups of learners in order to run successfully. The decision of whether a course will run or not will be made no later than 5 working days prior to the advertised start date. In the event that it is not possible for a course to run we will contact you personally to offer a full refund or to discuss alternative options.

M Accredited Maths or English Qualification
Free to all learners if prior attainment is below GCSE grade 9-4 or A-C
100% subsidised by the Government’s Education and Skills Funding Agency (ESFA).

Fees apply but free to some individuals
