OUR STORY

Cumbria Crystal was founded in 1976 by Lord and Lady Cavendish and a small group of local business people to produce exceptional, handmade

full lead (30%) crystal tableware.

The artisan workforce was initially recruited from Stourbridge,historically the heart of the English crystal industry, and a team of crafts-people re-located to Ulverston at the southern edge of the English Lake

District.

The factory now employs 21 people and visitors can watch thealchemy of traditional crystal making.

Today, the Company produces crystal for British Embassies and Residen-cies around the world and graces many formal dinners and state occa-

sions including British Foreign & Commonwealth Office and Diplomatic Mission Supplies.

Cumbria Crystal Collections are available at many renownedLondon retailers including Linley, Thomas Goode, Fortnum andMason, Hamilton & Inches and Mulberry Hall in York. Cumbria

Crystal Collections are used by royalty worldwide.

We have designed bespoke collections for retailers anddesigners such as Thomas Goode, Linley, Lee Broom, Johnnie Walker and

Sons and others.

Cumbria Crystal supplies the crystal for the internationallyacclaimed TV drama Downton Abbey, the Georgian inspired

Windermere, a contemporary classic design is achieved using our very special traditional two stage process of roughing and smoothing. The first cut is

made on a diamond wheel and in a secondoperation is smoothed on a sandstone wheel.

This time consuming technique, rarely used now, achieves a sharpness and quality of finish unrivalled

in the industry and cannot be replicated bymachine. The simplest cuts are often the most

expensive and time consuming to produce as they require absolute precision.

While researching into ideas for a new crystal cut, designer Peter Ting found inspiration in Piet Mondrian’s Composition 10: Pier and Ocean;1915, where verticals and horizontals build up a rhythmic

shimmer effect of light. Inspired by his great passion of Jazz music, Mondrian continued his love of the vertical and horizontal rhythm and

named his penultimate painting Broadway Boogie Woogie; 1942-43.

Inspired by the work of a great artist and a great musical genre, this collection delivers a sparkling melange of vertical and

horizontal cuts, dancing across the surface of this barware collection.

Designer Jessamy Kelly found inspiration in the elegant palm leaf. The strong natural form; as if wrought by nature, encouraged her to

examine the intersectional centre of the leaf and stem and their linear appearance through a series of detailed close-up drawings.

These key elements are elegantly transposed into PALM, a subtle yet strong design available in both stemware and barware collections. The intricate cutting and optical effects are highlights of the range.

PALM stemware is as comfortable on a porcelain and silver laden table as on a casual kitchen table for a spontaneous gathering of good friends. The PALM collections provide a stunning and stylish focus for

Wash your crystal by hand with hot water, a soft sponge and mild dish detergent. Avoid extreme water temperatures and soaps containing ammonia. Wash your crystal as soon as possible after use and do not leave water standing in crystal for more than a few days. In flower vases make sure the water is refreshed and the glass is cleaned regularly. This is especially important in hard water areas as elements in the water can bite into the crystal and leave permanent water marks. Never put your crystal in the dishwasher as the detergents will permanently mark the crystal. Limescale build up can be cleaned with vinegar and or lemon,

Dry your crystal immediately after washing it and use a linen or lint-free cloth.

When drying stemware avoid holding the glass by the stem and twisting while drying the bowl of the glass as the weakest part of your stemware is the place where the bowl joins the stem. Instead, hold the bowl of the glass gently in your palm while drying the inside of the glass.

Store your crystal in a safe, dust-free area. Do not store your crystal glassesupside-down in the cupboard: The lip of the glass is very delicate and may begin to crack under the weight of the glass.

Special care: If you have left your stemware out too long and dust, grime or stains have built up, try holding the pieces over a home steamer or a pot of boiling wateruntil the build-up loosens, and then gently wash them with a soft sponge and very mild detergent. Be careful not to burn your hands while holding your stemware over the hot steam. You may want to wear an oven mitt to protect your hand from potential burns.

Why is Full Lead Crystal special?

Developed in 1676, by English glassmaker, George Ravenscroft, full lead crystal has at least 30% lead in its composition and produces a more brilliant, sparkling glass than had ever been previously imagined and which is unsurpassed.

Lead content makes the crystal dense, yet softer than normal glass. This higherdensity produces the reassuring weight, and the softness allows for sharper facets creating the sparkling prisms when cut which refract the light resulting in exceptional colour and brilliance.

English Full Lead Crystal is the epitome of luxury. Its brilliant sparkle belies itsreassuring weight and heft in the hand. A very English invention from the 17thCentury, the very best crystal continues to be hand made in England at Cumbria Crystal in the 21st Century.

Concerns over Lead Crystal

Lead Crystal wine glasses, decanters and spirt glasses do not generally pose a significant health risk provided:• Items are thoroughly washed after use.• Wines and spirits are not stored for extended periods in lead crystal decanters.
