There are 6 Fifth Grade Classes at Grand Ridge

17th year teaching, 14th year teaching 5th grade in the Issaquah School District.

Master’s Degree in Technology and a B.S. in Earth Science from Western Washington University.

My husband Matt and I have 3 kids ages 3-11.

I enjoy hiking, reading, sports, and spending time with family and friends.

An overarching GOAL for 5th grade is to prepare for middle school. To help students do this we work on the following areas of growth all year:◦Academic Content◦Organization◦ Study skills◦ Social Skills◦Responsibility

Class Guidelines and Goals

We have our class guidelines to help our class run smoothly.

We have routines to help us know what is expected. We have great curriculum that not only teaches content

but also helps build our social skills and study skills. There is also a strong sense of “Finding the good and

praising it.” We try our best to focus on learning and helping each

other…this is where being positive is helpful. Friday Notes, Great Kid, and the Line Board are all ways I

communicate student behavior and strengths to parents and students.

I do my best to follow Love & Logic to help manage our classroom.

Classroom Management

We have a morning routine to help us get started as close to 9:15 as possible.

We do planner together every day except Friday. On Friday students use their Friday Notes to help them plan their weekend.

Test and project due dates should be in their planner. I try not to give homework on the weekend, although occasionally there

may be math homework. Reading logs are due each Monday morning as well as Friday Notes/missing work.

Schedule and Routines

The Binder!◦ Students are to keep an

organized 3-ring notebook (binder).

◦ It is to go to and from school daily.

◦ This is similar to what they will need to do for middle school.

◦ Papers to be brought to and from home tend to go in the front pocket.

◦ On Fridays, the front pocket should have returned work and the Friday Note.

The Planner!◦ Students are to write in

their planner daily.◦ This is similar to what they

are expected to do in middle school.

◦ Nightly homework as well as long term due dates and school events should be written in their planner.

◦ Friday would be the only exception and that is due to the Friday Note and/or that we have already written down some other due dates.

Organization…

Assignments are due on the due date. There is often a combination of nightly

homework and more long-term assignments.

Each Friday, work will be returned along with a Friday Note. ◦Each Friday Note will indicate student behavior

and missing work. ◦ If a student has missing work they need to turn

in the missing work by the following Monday morning.

Math

Number Theory Place Value & Number Operations Geometry Division Fractions & Decimals Addition & Subtraction of Fractions Exponents & Negative Numbers Fractions & Ratios Coordinates, Area, Volume, & Capacity Algebra Concepts & Skills

Problem Solving and Communicating Mathematical Thinking will be woven into each unit throughout the year.

Math Topics

Reading: Our reading curriculum is called Making Meaning and we use a balanced literacy approach for reading instruction. Our goal is for students to enjoy reading and to read a variety of genres.

Focus Lessons: we will be discussing and applying reading comprehension strategies to a variety of texts throughout the year.

Independent Reading: students will be applying comprehension strategies to the books they are reading at their reading level.

Guided Reading Groups: occur throughout the year to help students with various reading strategies or focus on specific texts or genres.

Shared Reading: occurs during reading lessons and other curriculum areas when both student(s) and teacher share the same reading materials.

Read Alouds: are a great way for us to enjoy literature together and explore reading comprehension.

Reading

Our writing curriculum is called Writing Pathways. We have four units of study in this order: ◦Personal Narratives◦Research-Based Information Writing◦Research-Based Argument Essays◦Memoirs

Each unit has several bands or phases:◦Gathering ideas or drafting phase◦ “Moving through the writing process” phase◦Analysis phase where we learn from mentor texts to make

our writing more powerful as we publish our writing. Writing convention lessons are laced throughout

the phases of each writing unit.

Writing

Our science for this year is based out of the National Geographic and STC (Science & Technology for Children) science curriculums.

Our units are as follows: ◦ Life Science, we will study heredity and adaptations

and structures & behaviors of living organisms. ◦ Physical Science we will study heat, light, sound and

energy along with electrical circuits and measurements of force & motion.

◦ Earth Science we will have a focus on fossils. Throughout the year, our curriculum incorporates

the three cross-cutting ideas of systems, inquiry, and application in our science lessons.

Science

To help us learn about the history of the United states, we will be using the History Alive Social Studies text, USA Social Studies Weekly, projects, class discussions, maps, and timelines.

Our topics of study include:◦United States Geography◦Native People of North America◦Early American Explorers◦Colonial America◦The Revolutionary War◦U.S. Government

Social Studies

Our Health curriculum is taught by both the classroom teacher and by our PE teacher Mr. Hogle.

Health topics include: ◦Nutrition◦Decision-making◦Making healthy choices◦Exercise◦Goal-setting◦The FLASH curriculum

Health

Students will use various software programs to work on their typing and research skills and use technology to help integrate fifth grade curriculum.

Using the computer as a tool, we will help students build technology skills to help them make the switch from the MSP to the computer based Smarter Balanced testing this spring.

One great addition to our technology plan is that you can now use Type to Learn 4 at home.

Technology

One hands-on lab for each science unit with SciToGo (throughout the year)

An Energy and Electricity workshop with The Toyman (in March)

A nutrition lab with Beecher’s Pure Foods Kids

Environmental Camp, Camp Colman, on May 4, 5, and 6. More information will be given in November.

5th Grade Moving up ceremony & 5th grade end of the year party.

Fieldtrips & Events

Each curriculum has built in assessments to help us see student progress and guide classroom lessons. Projects, assignments, group work, writing, and class discussions also help me see student progress.

The Grade 5-Stanford 10 in math and reading (testing window is January 26-February 6).

The Science MSP and Smarter Balanced Test in Language Arts and Math (testing window is March 9th-May 29th).

Assessments

Helping Students Achieve

Parent-Teacher Conferences are on December 3rd & 4th. ◦In our class, we will do teacher led

meaning just parents and teacher will be at our designated time.

◦Sign-ups will be in October. Look for more information in the GR E-News.

Report Cards will be on-line this year. More information will be given soon via GR E-News.

Student Information Form:◦Please verify the information and fill out the

Emergency Dismissal section of the Student Information form, sign and leave on desk.

We are putting together a Class Contact List: ◦Please mark that you are willing to share your

students name, phone number, and an e-mail list with our class.

◦If not, you will not be listed per your request. Please Take home the Comfort Kit. ◦Directions attached
