He started as a nurse student in a small general hospital in The Netherlands in 1978. Very early in his career he discovered an affection to surgery, infection prevention and to educating people. After his qualification as a general nurse he also graduated as an OR nurse at the University of Applied Sciences in Nijmegen. In 1991 he obtained a degree in teaching at the VU University of Amsterdam. Having worked in 5 different Dutch hospitals, Geert developed himself to an allround OR-nurse and a practical tutor for OR nurse students. Next to his job as an OR nurse and an OR nurse tutor, he had teacher positions at the Universities of Applied Sciences in Heerlen and in Nijmegen (from 1987 until 1995). During his time in the Rijnstate hospital in Arnhem a “quality management role” for the OR department was added to his responsibilities. Geert was a board member of the Dutch association for OR nurses and an author for an OR nurse- educator magazine (de POB-er). In 1997, Geert moved to 3M Medical. In that company he developed himself from a Technical Service Engineer for the Infection Prevention Division in EEMEA to a senior Scientific Affairs Specialist for infection prevention and vascular access solutions. In 2000 and in 2003 Geert received a “Circle of Technical Excellence Award in technical championing” for his exceptional efforts and successes in developing customer training programs and supporting the business in EEMEA. In appreciation of his outstanding contributions and his participation as a teammember for the launch of an antimicrobial IV (CHG) dressing he received a “Golden Step Award” in 2010.
