Non-Fiction: Secret Mission
Aims
• To introduce you to a range of non-fiction texts
• To allow you to identify non-fiction texts from the language they use
• To explore one type of non-fiction text in more detail, focussing on audience, purpose and language
Part of becoming a good reader is learning how to read a wider and wider range of material.
As well as fiction (novels, poetry and drama), you will also need to be confident in reading and talking about non-fiction texts.
But what exactly are non-fiction texts?
Non-fiction texts are texts that deal with material that is not fiction!
In other words, texts that are about real things, not things that are made up.
Non-fiction texts are all around us and we probably encounter and read more non-fiction than fiction texts in the average day!
Secret Mission Training Run:
You will be given a spy partner to work with for this training mission.
Your mission is…..
To identify as many of the types (genres) of non-fiction texts on the task sheet as possible!
Brilliant! A round of applause all round!
Top Secret Undercover Investigation
Now you’ve proved how good a spy you are, you will be assigned to a spy team and will be given ONE full non-fiction text to investigate.
You will expected back at mission HQ very shortly to give me a full debrief.
Now, to see if today’s mission is complete, let’s see if we have met our objectives:
•Do you know what the term non-fiction means?
•Can you name four different types of non-fiction text?
•Can you tell me five things about one particular type of non-fiction text?
Fantastic work – you definitely deserve a commendation and some more exciting missions in the future!
