WATER POLLUTION REGULATOR INTRODUCTION

Water pollution has become a very serious problem in New Zealand and around the world

as people are unaware with the severity of the problem and the long-term effects. The

farming sector was found out to be the main culprit with regards to the issue as they

dispose the largest amount of waste into our waterways. To reduce/counteract this

problem, we have produced a device called the water pollution regulator. This device

detects the toxicity levels in the water ways and sends this information through an app to

the Auckland City Council and the farmer associated with the particular farm once the

toxicity levels in the water ways reach treacherous levels. With this information the

Auckland City Council can chose to fine the farmers. We as a business will apply this

knowledge and inform the country of the issue in order to decrease pollution levels.

3. BUSINESS SECTION

3.1 Vision

To reduce water pollution in waterways through the use of technology to improve the

quality of life for the citizens of Aotearoa.

3.2 Industry Analysis: Water Pollution Regulation

Buyer power: Low Buyer power is low in the water pollution

regulation (WPR) industry as there are few

companies that provide customers a source of

regulation that can reduce pollution levels in

waterways.

Supplier power: High Supplier power is high in the WPR industry as

there are only a few suppliers that provide

customers a souce of regulation. Therefore the

few suppliers that are in the market have a strong

control over the price.

Threat of new entrants: High Threat of new entrants is high in the WPR

industry as it is relatively easy for new

competitors to enter into the market by starting

up a new business that provides a source of

regulation for customers.

Threat of substitutes: Low Threat of substitutes is low in the WPR Industry

as there is only a few alternative

products/solutions that attack the problem of

water pollution. (Water Care, 2010)

Rivalry among existing

competitors:

Low Rivalry among existing competitors is low in the

WPR lndustry as there is very few businesses that

provide a product/service that reduce the

pollution in waterways. (Water Care, 2010)

Overall, the Water Pollution Regulation industry is very attractive. The attractiveness of

the industry ties in with the fact that it would be a profitable industry to enter. The

business is likely to operate sustainably as the targer customers, farmers, need to

purchase the device by law and the after sale service and monthly fees will give a

continous revenue flow.

3.3 Customers and Their Needs

Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment, Dr Jan Wright, released a report

identifying the decreasing water quality mainly due to dairy farming. Our businesses main

customers are farmers who we identified as the group of people who pollute our

waterways the most with the farm waste being dumped. The farmers need to control the

waste that they dispose into the waterways as they can get caught out by law. In order to

know when the acidity (pollution) levels are dangerous they need to purchase our

product, the Water Pollution Regulator, to make sure they are keeping the water ways

around their farm area clean.

3.4 The Product and Service

The Water Pollution Regulator satisifes the needs of our target customers, Farmers, as it

helps them to identify the acidity levels in the waterways. The Regulator will detect the

acidity levels once it reaches a level of concern. The device captures this data and sends

the information to the farmers so that they are aware of the problem and can resolve

their acidity issue.

3.5 Suppliers and Partners

My businesses suppliers are my app software developer and my WPR instrument

developer. The software developer will supply my business with an app that connects to

my WPR product and will be placed on the app store and play store. The instrument

developer will manufacture my product and supply me with it on a required basis.

My businesses partners are organisations that my business doesn’t need to pay but they

will help to increase the profitability of my business. Possible partners for my business

include Green peace who support the environment, Water Care and the Auckland City

Council. I would partner with these organisation as they would advertise my product and

make it an attractive buy for my targeted customers (farmers).

3.6 Strategy: Focused High Cost

My business targets a narrow (niche) market as we mainly target Farmers. We have

identified them as the biggest threat to water pollution levels increasing in Aotearoa so

we have worked alongside the Auckland City Council to implement the law regionally. As

we have identified famers as our targeted customers, our competitive scope is a narrow

market.

My businesses price strategy is high cost. This is because the Water Pollution Regulator is

an expensive unit which needs monthly servicing. Therefore the initial cost for purchasing

the product, which comes with the free app, will be high in cost alongside the monthly

charges for servicing which will be added costs. Therefore my businesses overall strategy

is Focused High Cost.

3.7 Value Chain Activity: Service after the sale

One key value chain activity that I have identified for my business is service after the sale.

The business strategy for my company is focused high cost, predominantly due to the fact

that the monthly servicing fees, which are essential, will make the product an overall

expensive buy. Due to this fact, the service after the sale of the product will be the most

important value chain activity for my business.

In order to reduce water pollution in water ways through the use of techonlogy, the

regulator must go through monthly servicing in order to be working efficiently at all times.

Any glitches/software problems associated with the app will be delt with my businesses

software developer. Therefore the value chain activity of service after the sale is the most

important for my business based on it’s vision and strategy.

3.8 Business Processes

3.8.1. Customer Complaint Process:

This particular process is very important as the business must deal with customers

appropriately in order to keep them satisfied after the sale of the WPR product. The

serivce after the sale of the product in relation to keeping customers happy is very

important in order to keep my customer base (NZ Farmers) and not lose any customers to

competitors. This allows my business to achieve our vision of reducing water pollution

levels by sustaining a strong customer base.

3.8.2. Monthly Check-up Process:

This process is very important in order to keep the WPR product working efficiently at all

times after the sale. The WPR must be working efficiently so that it is sending the right

data through Wi-Fi to the application. This allows the farmers and Auckland City Council

to make the decision on the pollution levels. Therefore in order to improve the quality of

life for NZ citizens, the regulator must go through monthly check-ups in order to be

working efficiently and sending the right data to the farmers & Auckland City Council.

The customer management system is highly important to my business in order to keep the

customers happy after the sale of the WPR product and deal with their problems. The

emails/phone calls that are received from customers in relation to an inquiry/problem

must be delt with so that my business keeps its customer base. It’s very important to deal

with the customers and resolve their problems to make sure their regulator and app are

working efficiently in order to improve the quality of their life and all NZ citizens.

3.10.2. SPECIFIC INFORMATION SYSTEMS 2: CHECK-UP MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

The check-up management system is highly important to my business to identify the

regulators owned by customers needing monthly check-ups. It is essential that the

regulators needing check-up are identified so that they are working efficiently at all times.

The regulators need monthly servicing so that they are working efficiently at all times to

make sure they transfer the correct readings to the farmer and Auckland City Council in

order to efficiently reduce water pollution levels through the use of technology.

3.10.3. SPECIFIC INFORMATION SYSTEMS 3: APPOINTMENT SCHEDULING SYSTEM

The appointment scheduling system is imperative for booking an appointment that suits

my customer in order to work around their time and my businesses time. This is to make

sure that business operations are completed efficiently. The appointment is essential so

that the customers regulator is working efficiently in order to reduce water pollution

levels through the use of technology.

CONCLUSION

In conclusion a Water Pollution Regulator is a highly valuable product for the citizens of Aotearoa in order to maintain a high quality of life. We as a business aim to reach out to all farmers in New Zealand to reduce water pollution levels in waterways so that we have a clean and green environment. This is essential in order to stay healthy and maintain a high standard of living. This shows how important information technology is to my business in order to achieve our vision and reduce water pollution levels.
