CSE Diary for 29.01.2013
Following the heavy volatility in the bourse coupled with the slow
downward trend during the last few trading days led to a sharp fall
in the market indices today resulting in the benchmark index
plunging by 54 points to close at 5,800.8 while the S&P SL20 which
contains more of the steady lot too experienced a dip though at a
much slower pace closing down by 9 points. Dividend play
counters Ceylon Tobacco (-4.2%) and Nestle (-2.8%) were the main
negative contributors to the index. The market recorded a sharp rise in turnover primarily on selected
blue chip counters with 11 crossings during the day contributing
62% of the day’s turnover. Foreigners led the buy side of the
downhill market understanding the attractiveness of the current
market valuations. Net foreign inflow for the day was LKR830 mn
reversing the YTD net foreign outflow figure to an YTD Net foreign
inflow of LKR0.4 bn. We advise investors to take maximum use of
this opportunity to pick the hidden gems that dip in value. Foreign interest in Sampath Bank continued to yet another week as
the counter dominated the market turnover today reaching a 52-
week high price of LKR221.8. The counter registered 5 off-market
deals accounting for 1.4mn shares at prices LKR218.5 and LKR220.0.
The counter was on uptrend during on board trading today as ittraded between LKR212.5 and LKR221.8 while recording number of
blocks out of which a 100k share block was traded at LKR220.0. The
counter witnessed a 2.5% gain to finally close the day at LKR219.6.
John Keells Holdings was in second place in the turnover list with
crossings under its belt accounting for 1.2mn shares changing
hands at the same price of LKR226.0. Buying interest in the blue
chip conglomerate remained strong with 533k shares trading
onboard as the counter recorded a closing price of LKR225.1
(+0.1%). Lanka Orix Leasing also recorded off-market deals of
3.5mn shares at LKR72.5. After a considerable period of lapse,
investor interest was noted in manufacturing sector counter Royal
Ceramics (-2.7%), whilst interest extended in the construction sector
counter Access Engineering. Europe Stocks Little Changed as Investors Await US Data: European
stocks were little changed before reports that may show US
consumer confidence declined for a third month, while home
prices increased. US index futures were also little changed, while
Asian shares advanced. The Stoxx Europe 600 Index climbed less
than 0.1% to 289.42 at 9:58 a.m. in London. Brent Trades near Three-Month High on Economic Confidence:
Brent crude traded near a three- month high after reports from
Germany to South Korea signalled increased confidence in the
global economic recovery, potentially spurring oil demand. Brent
for March settlement advanced as much as 21 cents, or 0.2%, to
USD113.69 a barrel on the ICE Futures Europe exchange in London.

‘Lanka to pass USD4,000 per capita mark in two years’: Sri Lanka per capita income would reach the USD
4,000 mark in two years, said Governor, Central Bank Ajith Nivard Cabraal. Speaking at the ‘Moving Towards
the USD4K Era and Beyond’ conducted by the Finance House Association he said that it was targeted to
reach this mark in 2016. “However, due to prudent economic management, healthy political and other
positive factors, the county would be able pass the USD4,000 per capita mark in two years.” He said that
currently there were 106 countries that enjoy the USD4,000 per capita income and when Sri Lanka reaches
this mark, the economy should be diversified with new themes and new ‘hub’ concepts to take the country
beyond that mark. He said that when the topic of USD1,000 value economy for Sri Lanka was first discussed,
several people said it was only a dream. “However, one cannot blame them since the country was at war, the
financial system had cracks and there were also several other negative factors.” The Governor however said
that they took up this challenge and by 2016, this target too could be achieved. He said that the ‘Doing
Business Index’ also had placed Sri Lanka in a commendable position from the 102nd slot and our aim was to
bring this up to the 30th position within five years. He however said that Sri Lanka needed more capital and
to meet these objective, regulations were relaxed to allow foreign borrowing which would result in
expanding of the capital base.

Ceypetco buys big from PetroChina: Sri Lanka’s Ceylon Petroleum Corp (Ceypetco) has finalised a term
contract for the purchase of nearly three million barrels of oil products for delivery over a six-month period
from PetroChina, industry sources said yesterday. PetroChina has sold spot barrels to Ceypetco in the past,
but this is the first time China’s top oil and gas producer will supply term barrels to the Sri Lankan state -
owned company, another sign that Chinese companies are aggressively exploring new markets for their
excess diesel. Unipec, the trading arm of China’s top refiner Sinopec Corp, recently took part in a spot tender
to sell gasoline and gasoil to Ceypetco for the first time. Chinese refiners have been seeking alternative
markets to supply surplus diesel caused by a combination of weak domestic demand and additional refining
capacity. For its six-month term, Ceypetco bought 675,000 barrels of 0.25% sulphur gasoil at a premium of USD1.98 a barrel above Singapore quotes and 475,000 barrels of jet fuel at a premium of USD1.76 a barrel,
one of the sources said.

0.39 hectares in Kolonnawa, as well as proposals for the Central Cinema in Maradana. Development of the
Maradana property has been given priority status, along with four other sites including two sites along the
Gangarama. In total, the UDA has 42 properties that it is currently seeking investments. The authority, whichnow comes under the purview of the Ministry of Defence, is also engaged in an Urban Regeneration Project
for the City of Colombo, phase one of which aims to complete the relocation of the city’s populations living

India Cuts Key Rate to Spur Growth as Inflation Cools: India lowered interest rates for the first time since
April and cut the amount of deposits lenders must set aside as reserves, easing policy to aid growth as
inflation cools and the government curbs the budget deficit. The Reserve Bank of India reduced the
repurchase rate to 7.75% from 8%, it said in Mumbai today, as 30 of 35 analysts in a Bloomberg News surveypredicted. Four expected a cut to 7.5% and one no change. Governor Duvvuri Subbarao cut the cash reserve
ratio to 4% from 4.25%, effective Feb. 9, adding LKR180 bn into the banking system. India becomes the first
major Asian economy to ease borrowing costs in 2013, after inflation moderated to a three- year low and
the government called for cheaper credit as it vows prudence in next month’s budget to damp price
pressures. While the cost of living is still rising by more than 7% , the central bank said today there’s space,
“albeit limited,” to spur expansion as it cut the inflation forecast.

IMF Set to Pare South Korea 2013 Growth Estimate to About 3%: The International Monetary Fund is likely
to pare its forecast for South Korea’s economic growth for 2013, catching up with reductions by the nation’s
central bank and finance ministry. The full-year expansion may be about 3%, compared with a 3.9% estimatein September last year, country mission chief Hoe Ee Khor said in an interview in Seoul after meeting with
South Korean officials last week. He didn’t say when a new estimate may be released. South Korea’s
government is frontloading budget spending in the first half of this year to spur the nation’s expansion a s

gains in the won and a slide in the yen threaten to crimp exports. Paring the forecast would bring the IMF
closer to the central bank’s prediction of 2.8% growth and the finance ministry’s 3% estimate.

German Consumer Confidence to Rise in February, GfK Says: German consumer confidence will increase in
February due to a stable labor market and higher income expectations, Gfk SE (GFK) said. The Nuremberg-based market research company forecast today that its consumer-sentiment index, based on a survey of
about 2,000 people, will rise to 5.8 from a revised 5.7 in January. Economists expected a gain to 5.7 from the
initial January reading of 5.6, according to the median of 34 estimates in a Bloomberg News survey. The
Bundesbank said last week that Germany’s economy, Europe’s largest, is already rebounding from a
contraction in the final quarter of 2012. Business and investor confidence both rose more than economists
forecasts this month, and a gauge of activity in service industries climbed to a 19-month high. A measure of
economic expectations rose to minus 11.3 in January from minus 17.9 in December, GfK said. A gauge of
income expectations climbed to 36 from 21.2, and an index measuring willingness to buy jumped to 35.3
from 20.1.

Japan’s Government Proposes First Spending Cut in 7 Years: Japan unveiled a government budget for 2013
that cuts spending for the first time in seven years, underscoring Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s efforts to
establish fiscal-discipline credentials even as he seeks to boost growth. The Cabinet in Tokyo today approved
a proposed spending total of 92.6 trillion yen (USD1 trillion) for the fiscal year starting April 1. That’s down
0.3% from this year’s main budget, which excludes a 13.1 trillion yen extra budget to pay for fiscal stimulus.
Abe faces the challenge of leading the country out of its third recession in five years while containing a public
debt that’s twice the size of the economy. Most of the reduction in spending next year comes from the
elimination of reserve funds that the previous government tapped for stimulus measures.
