CSE Diary for 28.01.2013
Bourse extended its volatile behavior as the benchmark index initially
edged up to touch a high of 5,886.6 (+8 points), before following a
gradual downward path to close at its low point of 5,855.1 points with a
23.1 point plunge, the biggest drop on 6 weeks. Losses in Trans Asia
Hotels (8.1%), Lanka Orix Leasing (-3.4%), Lion Brewery (-2.9%) and
Ceylon Tobacco (-0.4%), primarily weighed on the index negatively.
Meanwhile, the S&P SL20 swung between marginal gains & losses as it
closed broadly flat at 3,194.7 points (+4.1 points).
Profit taking in selected counters following the substantial gains madeover the past few weeks has led the indices to remain broadly flat
which we take as a healthy consolidation. It should be noted that the
todays drop in ASPI is primarily concentrated within few selected stocks
which have had a fierce rally over the past few weeks, whilst
accumulation into steady stocks are continuing despite still at a slow
pace. We advise the value hunters to pick on the counters on
weakness, as the current slow pace would not last long as we believe
the approaching earnings season would provide an additional boost to
equity performance.
Heavyweight, John Keells Holdings grabbed the limelight today
accounting for c.72% of the days turnover. Two off-market deals in the
counter accumulating to c.1.5 mn shares were taken at LKR225.0.
Further several large on-board deals were also handled in the counter
including c.199.9k and 174.9k share parcels at a similar price. It closed
with a marginal 0.2% advance at LKR225.0. Interest extended in
Environmental Resources Investments as the counter also witnessed
sizeable on-board deals including c.3 mn share block at LKR18.0. The
counter closed with a 4.8% drop at LKR18.0.
Following continued foreign activity in Commercial Bank of Ceylon,
buying interest continued in both the Voting & Non-Voting shares of the
counter trading at attractive valuations. The former advanced 0.9% at
its close of LKR105.0. Sampath Bankalso extended interest, whilst some
profit taking was evident in Access Engineering(-0.5%) and Peoples
Leasing & Finance (-1.9%). Selling pressure weighted heavy in Kotagala
Plantations having announced a rights issue (1:4) to raise LKR360 mn,
where the counter saw its price eroding by a massive 17.4% to close at
LKR64.7.
Retail & high net worth investors continued to be active in counters
including Environmental Resources Investments [W:0006], HVA Foods
and Nations Lanka Finance, whilst renewed interest was visible in
Richard Pieris & co. having announced an interim dividend of LKR0.2 as
it advanced 1.3% to close at LKR8.0.
European Stocks Are Little Changed: European stocks were little
changed near a 23-month high as investors awaited reports on
American durable-goods orders and pending house sales. US index
futures were also little changed, while Asian shares fell. The Stoxx 600
retreated less than 0.1% to 289.54 at 10:04 a.m. in London. Oil Trades Near Highest Level in Four Months on Economic Outlook: Oil
traded near the highest level in four months in New York after posting
the longest run of weekly gains since April 2009, lifted by speculationthat a global economic recovery will boost fuel demand. Crude for
March delivery was at USD95.90 a barrel, up 2 cents, in electronic
trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange at 10:07 a.m. London

Tea exports to reach LKR380 bn mark in 2013: Sri Lankas total tea export earnings will reach the LKR380 bnmark this year compared to LKR160 bn recorded last year. This would be a 9.5% increase in rupees termswhile the value would drop in terms of dollars, said Sri Lanka Tea Board Chairperson Janaki Kuruppu.
Kuruppu noted that the Colombo auction still gets the highest tea prices in the world and the annual average

Secondary market bond yields dip for the first time in eight days: Secondary market Treasury bond yieldsdipped for the first time in eight days on Thursday, as a total of LKR45 bn was on offer for the third bond
auction of the year due on 29 of January. On offer are LKR10 bn, LKR25 bn and LKR10 bn on the five year
(01.06.18), eight year (01.05.21) and 15 year (01.07.28) maturities respectively. The dip in yields was mainly
driven by the two five year maturities (i.e. 01.04.18 and 15.08.18) as it opened Thursday at an intraday day
high level of 11.40/45% and dipped to an low of 11.00/05%. However profit taking coupled with sellingpressure at these levels saw its yields increase once again marginally, to close the day at levels of 11.05/10%.
Interestingly, the yield curve was showing signs of reflecting an inversion once again as the longer tenure
maturities were seen trading below the 364 day bill level of 11.10% to 11.15%. Given below are the closing,
secondary market yields for the most frequently traded maturities.

Global News
Tripling in Debt to USD1.7 Trillion Drags on Economy: : Chinese companies are spending more than ever toservice debt after their borrowing almost tripled over five years, prompting strategists to warn of rising
default risk and a threat to economic growth. Total short- and long-term borrowing by 3,895 publicly traded
non-financial companies rose to almost USD1.7 trillion in their latest filings, from USD604 bn at the end of
2007, data compiled by Bloomberg show. Financing costs, including interest, on all forms of debt climbed to
the highest level as a percentage of gross domestic products last year, according to Sanford C. Bernstein &
Co. Bernstein says that means less cash for investment to fuel the worlds second-largest economy, while
Royal Bank of Scotland Group says the threat of defaults will hold back interest- rate liberalization. The
average 10-year yield for top-rated company bonds is near a 13-month high at 5.27%, compared with the
2.6% yield in a Bank of America Merrill Lynch global corporate index.

Euro Crisis Seen Reaping Social Toll With Record Jobless: Euro-area jobless data this week will expose thesocial cost of last years debt crisis and recession on southern European economies as unemployment across
the region probably rose to a record in December. Unemployment in the 17-nation bloc climbed for a fifth
month to 11.9%, according to the median of 34 economists forecasts in a Bloomberg News survey. That
result due on Feb. 1 would show the highest jobless rate since records began in 1995. By contrast, German
unemployment data the day before may show the jobless rate there held steady for a fourth month at 6.9%
in January, a separate survey found. While measures to stem the regions debt turmoil have helped reduce
sovereign bond yields from Spain to Greece, the recession and crisis have led to job cuts by companies and
governments. The European Central Bank predicts the currency blocs economy will shrink 0.3% this year
and President Mario Draghi said last week that the jury is still out on whether investor optimism can be
reflected in economic momentum.

ECB loans- European banks to repay early: The European Central Bank (ECB) said that 278 eurozone bankswill repay EUR137.16 bn (USD185 bn; GBP117 bn) of three-year loans they borrowed. The money, lent in
December 2011 and February 2012, will be paid on 30 January, it added. The loans were made when many
feared that the eurozone would break apart. It lent the money amidst fears that Greece, which needed two
international bailouts, could default on its huge debts. At the same time, many investors thought the hugeeconomies of Spain and Italy may be next to require international assistance. "If one has to find a common
denominator... for defining why 2012 is going to be remembered, I think one would say it's the year of the re
launching of the euro,"Mario Draghi said at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. The ECB has
forecast that eurozone economic growth in 2013 will be between minus 0.9% and plus 0.4%. Mr Draghi said:

"Are we satisfied? I think to say the least, the jury is still out. Because all in all, we haven't seen an equal
momentum on the real side of the economy and that's where we will have to do much more."

Indonesia Increasing Palm Oil Export Tax Seen Curbing Shipments: Indonesia will raise taxes on palm oilexports in February in the first increase in nine months, potentially curbing shipments from the largest
producer as rival Malaysia maintains a zero-tariff policy for a second month. The duty will be raised to 9%from 7.5% in January, according to a Trade Ministry decree on its website today. The base price to calculate
the levy will be increased to USD744 a metric ton from USD709, it said. This is the first increase in taxes since
May, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. The increased tariffs by Indonesia may lower shipments and
hamper efforts to trim reserves, which have surged to about 90 percent of storage capacity. Futures in Kuala
Lumpur have tumbled 21% after Malaysian inventories reached a record of 2.63 mn tons in December,
prompting the government to cut export taxes. The Malaysian tariffs were cut to zero for this month and will
be kept at that level in February.

ECB Says Impact of Proposed Banking Rules May Vary Across EU: The European Central Bank said its vitalto evaluate the impact of planned new banking rules across the European Union as it may vary from onecountry to another. An impact assessment needs to be carried out as a matter of priority, the ECB said in
an e-mailed statement today. The proposals by an EU-mandated group led by Bank of Finland Governor Erkki
Liikanen may have a significantly different impact across the EU, given differences in the structure of the
banking sectors. Under the non-binding suggestions presented by the Liikanen group, EU banks would be
forced to push much of their trading activities into separately capitalized units and face extra bonus rules.
The group also called for a toughening of Basel bank-capital rules and for lenders to issue debt designed to
be written down in crises. Further clarification is needed on setting an additional capital-buffer requirement
on trading activities, according to the ECB. The addition of a further capital buffer for European banks would
need to be duly assessed as it would come on top of several other new requirements including the counter-
cyclical capital buffer, the capital conservation buffer, the additional capital charge for systemically
important financial institutions and, possibly, the systemic risk buffer, the ECB said.[Source: www.bloomberg.com]
