NEW DELHI, June 9:

Capping of airfares in thebackdrop of passenger com-plaints of arbitrary tariff hikeswas today ruled out by the gov-ernment which said that compe-tition among the airlines willtake care of the problem.

Civil Aviation MinisterAshok Gajapathi Raju saidrestricting the airfares will notmake good business sense as itcould also jeopardise the gov-ernment's regional connectivityplan as such a move may dis-

courage airlines to fly on non-profitable routes.

He, however, said a slew ofpassenger-centric measuresincluding "time-bound" griev-ance redressal mechanismwould be unveiled very soon,emphasising that India's civilaviation market was the fastestgrowing in domestic passengertravel demand.

It is expected that the gov-ernment was going to announcesteps to rationalise the ticketcancellation charges and they

are likely to be capped aroundthe base fare, as against currentexorbitant fees, as part of pas-senger-friendly initiatives.

The Minister said at least 32airports built by AirportAuthority of India at a cost of atleast Rs 3,000 crore over theyears were lying "unconnected"and putting any restriction onmarket-driven fares may jeop-ardize government's plan to startflight services to those airports.

Holding that putting a cap onairfares may have an adverseimpact on growth of aviationsector, Raju said his Ministrykeeps a "continuous tab" onprice movements to ensure thatthe rates are under check.

His comments come at atime when the government isdiscussing ways to addressissues related to steep fluctua-tions in airfares, especially dur-ing peak seasons and naturalcalamities. Minister of State forCivil Aviation Mahesh Sharmalast month had announced thatcapping of fares will beannounced soon.

"These (capping airfares) arecomplicated problems. Theydon't have simplistic solutions....Competition has by and largetaken care of the (ticket) rates,"Raju said in an interview.

"Floors and caps go together.If you just say I will only cap(air ticket prices) then you won'thave any airline. Anyone doingbusiness doesn't want to makeloss," he said. (PTI)

Govt rules out capping of airfares
