The Prelude Spirit of God arr. Smith

Welcome and Announcements Moment of Reflection

Please stand in body or spirit.

GATHERING The Holy Spirit calls us together as the people of God.

The Confession and Forgiveness

Blessed be the holy Trinity, ☩ one God, the fountain of living water,

the rock who gave us birth, our light and our salvation. Amen.

Let us come into the light, the revealing and healing light of God.

Silence is kept for reflection

God of grace and glory, you have brought us through the night of sin into the light of Jesus’ resurrection. Yet our lives are still shadowed by sin. Make us alive in Christ, O God. Make us new as you make all things new. Rescue us from evil and the gloom of sin, renew us in grace, and restore us to living in your holiness, through Jesus Christ, our risen Lord. Amen. Rejoice with all creation around God’s throne! The light of the risen Christ puts to flight all evil deeds, washes away sin, restores innocence to the fallen, casts out hate, brings peace, and humbles earthly pride. Jesus Christ loves you and frees you from your sins by his blood. To him be glory and dominion forever and ever! Amen. The Gathering Song Spirit of Gentleness

The Greeting

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you.

The Prayer of the Day Source of all that is good and true and beautiful, keep constant in your musicians the conviction that your Spirit works through them to reach those who gather in church for hope, assurance, grace, beauty…for some sign of your care, for solace from grief and loss, for strength to stand for justice, for a glimpse of wonder and mystery, for response to a need so hidden that it is known to you alone. Assure your musicians that the rehearsals they lead, the anthems they conduct, the hymns they play, the psalms they accompany, the service music they offer, the solos they sing, the instrumental works they perform, the programs they organize, the words of encouragement they give are again and again the vessel of your Spirit…as they lead your people in singing your everlasting praise through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

THE WORD

God speaks to us in scripture, preaching, and song. The First Reading Acts 2:1-21

1When the day of Pentecost had come, the apostles were all together in one place. 2And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. 3Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. 4All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability. 5Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. 6And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each. 7Amazed and astonished, they asked, “Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? 8And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language? 9Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, 11Cretans and Arabs—in our own languages we hear them speaking about God’s deeds of power.” 12All were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “What does this mean?” 13But others sneered and said, “They are filled with new wine.” 14But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them, “Men of Judea and all who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to what I say. 15Indeed, these are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only nine o’clock in the morning. 16No, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel: 7‘In the last days it will be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams. 18Even upon my slaves, both men and women, in those days I will pour out my Spirit; and they shall prophesy. 19And I will show portents in the heaven above and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and smoky mist. 20The sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the coming of the Lord’s great and glorious day. 21Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.’ ”

Word of God. Word of Life. Thanks be to God.

The Second Reading Ephesians 5: 8-10, 17-21

For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light (for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness, righteousness, and truth), finding out what is acceptable to the Lord.

Therefore do not be unwise, but understand what the will of the Lord is. And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord, giving thanks always for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, submitting to one another in the fear of God.

Word of God. Word of Life. Thanks be to God. The Musical Offering “Et in Terra Pax” Purifoy “Et in terra pax, and on earth, peace.” Psalm 98 (spoken responsively)

Sing to the Lord a new song, for he has done marvelous things; his right hand and his holy arm have worked salvation for him. The Lord has made his salvation known and revealed his righteousness to the nations. He has remembered his love and his faithfulness to Israel; all the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God.

Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth, burst into jubilant song with music;

make music to the Lord with the harp, with the harp and the sound of singing,

with trumpets and the blast of the ram’s horn— shout for joy before the Lord, the King. Let the sea resound, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it.

Let the rivers clap their hands, let the mountains sing together for joy; Let them sing before the Lord, for he comes to judge the earth. He will judge the world in righteousness and the peoples with equity.

The Musical Offering “How Great Thou Art” arr. Forrest The Third Reading Colossians 3: 12-17

Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.

And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity. Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts. And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. Word of God. Word of Life. Thanks be to God.

The Holy Gospel John 14:8-17, 25-27

The Holy Gospel according to St. John, Chapter 14 Glory to you, O Lord. 8Philip said to [Jesus,] “Lord, show us the Father, and we will be satisfied.” 9Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you all this time, Philip, and you still do not know me? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own; but the Father who dwells in me does his works. 11Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; but if you do not, then believe me because of the works themselves. 12Very truly, I tell you, the one who believes in me will also do the works that I do and, in fact, will do greater works than these, because I am going to the Father. 13I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14If in my name you ask me for anything, I will do it. 15“If you love me, you will keep my commandments. 16And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, to be with you forever. 17This is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, because he abides with you, and he will be in you. 25“I have said these things to you while I am still with you. 26But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything, and remind you of all that I have said to you. 27Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them be afraid.” The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ.

The Prayers of Intercession

Please kneel or sit as you are able for the prayers.

Rooted in the abundant life and love of Christ Jesus, we pray for the life of the church, the lives of people in need, and the life of all creation.

A brief silence.

O God, move among your people and send forth your Spirit to make your church a holy place where people find welcome, Christ’s compassion, and new life. Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great.

Send forth your Spirit to renew the earth in the wake of storms, earthquakes, or human misuse. Breathe life into every mountain and valley, stream and ocean. Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great.

Send forth your Spirit to unite all nations in caring for those who are vulnerable or in need. Help us to put aside our differences and to seek your will. Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great.

Send forth your Spirit to aid people in distress, especially those we have named to our prayer list, aloud or silently in our hearts…….pause……. Sweep them up in the movement of your Spirit, and fulfill your everlasting promises for all. Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great.

Send forth your Spirit to knock down barriers that prevent people from receiving your good news. Guide interpreters and cultural ambassadors who open lines of communication. Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great.

Here other intercessions may be offered.

Send forth your Spirit to unite us with the saints of every time and place. By the gifts of your Spirit, rouse us to deeds of mercy and words of kindness. Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great.

We deliver all this into your care, O God, trusting in the work of your Holy Spirit to bring all things into the risen life of Christ our Lord. Amen.

Please stand in body or spirit.

The Apostles’ Creed Let us together as a community of faith confess the Christian faith in the words of the Apostles’ Creed. I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. The Peace

The peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. And also with you.

The congregation shares the greeting with one another saying, “Peace be with you,” or similar words.

Please be seated.

The Offertory Prayer

Let us pray together: Blessed are you, O God, ruler of heaven and earth. Day by day you shower us with blessings. As you have raised us to new life in Christ, give us glad and generous hearts, ready to praise you and to respond to those in need, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. The Great Thanksgiving The Lord be with you. And also with you.

Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

It is right to give our thanks and praise.

It is indeed right our duty and our joy…

The presiding minister continues with the words of institution. The Words of Institution Pastor: Holy, mighty, and merciful Lord, heaven and earth are full of your glory; In great love you sent to us Jesus, your Son, who reached out to heal the sick and suffering, who preached good news to the poor and who, on the cross opened his arms to all. In the night in which he was betrayed…. Pour out upon us the Spirit of your love, O Lord, and unite the wills of all who share this heavenly food, the body and blood of Jesus Christ our Lord; to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit be all honor and glory, now and forever.

All: Amen

The Lord’s Prayer

United in Christ let us join hands as we pray the Lord’s Prayer. Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen.
