KEEP WINTER COLDS AT BAY…

…..with the onset of winter here, so too are colds and flu…

COLDS & FLU – Fact or Fiction?

The terms “cold” and “flu” both mean the same thing- FICTION. This is a common misconception, but colds and flu are caused by different viruses altogether. Colds usually start off gradually. Symptoms of a cold include a sore throat, a runny nose, coughing and sneezing. The symptoms of the flu, on the other hand, tend to be much more severe, usually starting with a fever, often accompanied by fatigue and body aches and cold-like symptoms.

Feed a cold, starve a fever- FICTION. People often seem to mix this one up. But no matter which way you flip this phrase, part of it will always be wrong. It doesn’t matter if you have a cold or a fever, because you shouldn’t starve either one. First and foremost, when you’re sick, your body needs plenty of fluids. And while being sick may zap your appetite, it’s still not a good idea to starve yourself. The best way to prevent a cold is to wash your hands- FACT Colds and flu viruses are spread from person to person as droplets in the air. Sneezing or coughing produces more droplets and helps to spread the infection. Touching infected surfaces, such as door handles or when shaking hands, and then passing the virus from the hands to the mouth, nose or eyes is another route of infection.

You can catch a cold by staying outside in the cold too long- FICTION Colds are transmitted by touching something that an infected person has touched, or by breathing in moisture that an infected person has coughed out. The reason people get more colds in winter is that they spend more time indoors and have more contact with each other.

A cold is most contagious during the first few days of symptoms- FACT The common cold can last for up to two weeks, but chances are you can’t stay home that whole time. Staying home at the first sign of symptoms is advised, as you’re most likely to pass on your germs during the first few days of a cold, when symptoms are at their worst. Always cover your nose and mouth when sneezing or coughing and wash your hands frequently.

If you have the flu, you shouldn't go to work- FACT Going to work can expose your colleagues to infection. Sometimes, professional athletes play with the flu, but in those cases it is usually a different virus involved. The best advice is to rest and recover.

Antibiotics can cure a cold or the flu- FICTION A cold or flu is a virus, and, therefore, cannot be treated with antibiotics. If you have a flu shot one year, you don't need it the next- FICTION Flu shots do not last for more than a year. And, the vaccine is reformulated each year to target the specific kind of virus, which may change from year to year. Also, flu shots are only formulated to work on the 3 most likely viral types expected to be floating around each winter. So, if you’ve caught the wrong bug, your flu shot will be next to useless.

How can I prevent getting a cold or flu? Keep your immune system strong! Eat a balanced diet that is rich in fruit and vegetables; take regular exercise & don't smoke.

Take preventive measures by boosting your health and immune system with herbs and vitamins:

VITAL VITAMINS & HERBS FOR COLD & FLU PREVENTION & TREATMENT:

Ensure you are not Vitamin D deficient – get your blood levels checked! Aim for a minimum of

80nmol/l, and preferably keep within the 120-165nmol/l range. Most people living in Southern

Australia need to supplement with vitamin D3 capsules throughout the winter months and into

spring, to prevent becoming Vitamin D deficient.

Zinc and Vitamin C – deficiencies of either will slow down your recovery. Likewise, a good

multivitamin may be beneficial to take on a regular basis, especially where your dietary intake is

restricted.

Garlic, ginger and lemon juice can also be beneficial.

Echinacea, elderberry and Olive Leaf Extract have immune-enhancing properties,

and can be taken in combination for maximal efficacy.

There are steps you can take to help prevent spreading a cold or flu: try to stay away from other people to prevent the virus from spreading

cover your mouth when coughing or sneezing and wash your hands regularly

throw away tissues as soon as you have used them

if you are contagious with flu, stay home from work to prevent spreading it

to others and keep children home from school

How do I treat colds or flu? There is no cure for colds or flu. Antibiotics, which treat infections due to bacteria, do not work on cold and flu viruses, although, they may have a place in treating various complications, such as sinus, chest and middle ear infections. However, there are things you can do to help yourself feel better:

Eat a nutritious diet with plenty of fruit and vegetables. Drink plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration.

Assist your body to heal with herbs and vitamins

Steam inhalations with menthol, eucalyptus, tea-tree or camomile essential oils may help

Get plenty of rest and don’t go back to work too early.

Definitely do not smoke or drink alcohol to excess whilst you are sick.

The Toxic Truth (60 Minutes)

Some plastics contain a compound that's been linked to all kinds of health problems - from cancer and heart disease to obesity and even brain damage. It's called Bisphenol A or BPA and the research is so persuasive that many countries have banned it or are phasing it out.

Alarmingly, Australia isn't one of them. http://sixtyminutes.ninemsn.com.au/stories/8257129/the-toxic-truth

Do you dare to take this breathtaking, heart stopping tour – even online? The scariest path in the world!! View this famous climbing sector of El Chorro in Spain's Andalucia. The area of El Chorro situated in the south of Spain is renowned amongst travellers and mountain hikers for its stunning scenery and climbs, yet this is not the main attraction on offer, El Chorro is host to one of the most dangerous walkways in the world, built by workers to transport materials between the Chorro and Gaitanejo Falls. This should have you on the edge of your seat possibly feeling slightly dizzy. It's 6 minutes long and should be watched till the very end. It's enough to make you nauseous especially when you consider that it was filmed by someone who made the hike carrying a video camera while he did it.
