Dear Parents and Caregivers,
What a magnificent production of Cats which the Reddam community has been privileged
to be part of: either performing on stage, backstage, sound or lighting, in the orchestra or as
an audience member. The magnificence left all who attended spellbound. Congratulations
and thanks to Jo Karney, Michael Mc Gregor, Liz Collier, Ellie and Marcus Bortolotti for pro-
ducing a world class show which all those involved in will never forget.

Last weekend, Yonatan Freund participated in the NSW Karate State Championships, winning
Gold in his age group, thus becoming the NSW State Champion for the 2nd year in a row. His
next competition is the Australian Open being held from 15-17 April.
The NSW Karate Federation also recognised his recent achievements by awarding him the
Kumite Sports Player of the Year for 2015, an incredible achievement. Well done Yonatan.
Congratulations to Daniel Milgrom and his team mates from UNSW Wests Water Polo Team
who finished up Runners Up in the Under 14 Water Polo Championships.
Roderick Gadaev's film “Shapeless” won the best short film award for JMC Academy Martini

RECORD OF ALL RECORDS!!
Last Saturday our First Grade Girls Touch Football Team won the School Girls Senior A Competition.
We played Monte in the Final and won comfortably, 5 - 2. This ends an amazing era for our current
Year 12 Girls. We entered them in this competition when they were in Year 6. That season they won
the Year 7 Competition and have kept on winning ever since. Over 12 seasons they have re-
mained undefeated and won 12 Grand Finals. They have played 84 matches and never been
beaten. The Year 12 Girls who are now finished are: Emma Styles, Sasha Wrublewski, Jasmine
Fountas, Toni Sharp and Bella Kable. Other members of the team who will hopefully keep the tradi-
tion of winning in hand are Tia Hinds, Kristy Wachman, Caitlin Robinson, Kiarna Dymock, Gabby
Glazer, Athina Vougdis and Ruby Glazer. Valentina Ivanov unfortunately missed the Final as she is
in Europe competing in the Federation Cup for tennis.
Special thanks goes to our wonderful coach, Janine Hinds, without Janine this would not have
happened!!
JUNIOR TOUCH FOOTBALL GRAND FINAL
Last Saturday our Junior Touch Football team played in their Grand Final at Centennial Park. In a
very close match they went down to Monte 1 - 2. Our team must be commended for a great
game and a wonderful season. This team is one to watch for the future as the girls are very talent-
ed, work hard and enjoy playing with one another. Congratulations to Lauren Cronin for winning
the best and fairest award for this competition.

This past week we had two very special Entrepreneurs speak to the class!
Year 12 Reddam student Joshua Broyda gave an inspiring presentation to the class about his en-
trepreneurship journey. He is on his 4th company at the ripe young age of 17! Products from his cur-
rent company have been featured on ABC News, and MP Solutions is now a rousing success. He
manages 3 full time employees and massive warehouse operations, while doing his best for the
HSC. The students have an example in Josh as someone who not long ago was sitting in their seats
and is now sitting at the head of his own company!
Solange Cunin, a 24 year old passionate entrepreneur, started Quberider at 22 years old while in
her second year at the UNSW Aerospace Engineering program. With Quberider she plans to make
access to space easier and more affordable while boosting the Australian Space industry in the
process. She has created a STEM program for high schools in order to teach coding on real satellite
technology to test their theories in space on Quberider satellites. Needless to say you could hear
jaws drop in the classroom!
ENTREPRENEURSHIP - YEAR 8

YEAR 8 SEMINAR DAY
Last Thursday Year 8 Visual Arts students visited the Powerhouse Museum to see the DC Comics
Lego Exhibition, Newington Armoury to view Art Express and lastly completed a series of underwa-
ter photography activities at Homebush Aquatic Centre.
The activities provided valuable insight to the students unit of work on Pop Art and photography
through investigating the world of popular culture and how this impacts on the Visual Arts. The day
also built on each students repertoire of skills and their understanding of how artworks are made in
many mediums including social media by completing a series of Instagram challenges.
Here are some of our Budding artists shots over the day.

JUNIOR STUDENT EXECUTIVE 2016
Last Friday, 19th March, Scots College hosted Reddam. The topic was gender. In a wonderful twist,
the year 7 topic was “that single sex schools should be banned” with Scots being negative and
Reddam affirmative. Congratulations to our year 8, 9 and 12 teams for their victories, and for all
teams putting on some excellent debates. A special congratulations to our Year 9 team who have
won 4/4 debates. Our next debate will be against Cranbrook on 29th April.

NON-FUNCTIONAL TEDDY BEAR
Year 11 have continued their investigation with the idea of the ‘ready-made’ object and found
objects coming together in a new context to create new meanings. The students have changed
the traditional, stereotypical bear to a contemporary, Post Modern bear that challenges the ideas
about what a teddy is and what it is used for.

General Maths or 2 Unit?
There has been a lot of discussion over the last 18 months about the merits of students undertaking the calcu-
lus based 2 unit Mathematics course for the HSC or the General Mathematics course. The article below ap-
peared in The Sydney Morning Herald on Thursday 17th March and the letters responding were published the
following day. They succinctly convey the arguments of both sides of the story.
MATHS NEWS
@REDDAM—The Reddam House High School Newsletter Volume 16, Issue 9, Friday 24 March 2016 Page 12
I would like to add the following comments. At Reddam House we encourage the students to undertake a
level of Mathematics that satisfies their interests, provides them with the opportunity to maximise their ATAR
and most importantly, allows them to do so whilst still maintaining a high standard in their other subjects. Ideal-
ly this would all be achieved without placing unnecessary stress on students that can come from sitting at an
inappropriate level. The student’s best interests are at the heart of this process. This process is not about suc-
cess ratios nor participation rates.
As an example of the approach that we take at Reddam House our dux of 2015, Jordon Maxton, undertook
the accelerated Mathematics course that we offer to our outstanding mathematicians in order to give them
options in Year 12. He achieved a mark of 98 in the 2014 HSC in 2 Unit Mathematics. Jordon then elected not
to do any Mathematics in Year 12, instead concentrating on the sciences and English as he had set himself
the goal of studying medicine at university and thought that these subjects would serve him well in this en-
deavour. Jordan achieved his goal. He would have made an outstanding Extension 2 Mathematics candi-
date but he deemed further study in Mathematics superfluous to his needs. Well done Jordon. Good decision.
But there is a problem in mathematics across the country. The number of students undertaking the harder
courses is falling and needs to be addressed. The students are voting with their feet.
The General Mathematics course was originally designed for students who wanted to continue with Mathe-
matics in senior school but knew they were not going to need it at university. Thus the syllabus reflects a very
practical course. It has served its purpose well but needs a little fine tuning. Statistics is only studied by those
students who undertake the General course but is required by many students in their first year of university.
We are overdue for a new calculus based course, and nearly had one before the national curriculum inter-
vened. And whilst we are devising a new calculus based course we should change the current set up in the
final examination where the Extension 1 candidates sit for the 2 unit paper and take the bulk of the top band
results. It is an unfair advantage and has to stop.
I propose that we should have three courses in senior mathematics, namely Extension Mathematics for our
best and brightest, Advanced Mathematics and General Mathematics. I would include some basic calculus
in the General course and include Statistics in both of the other courses. I would also like to see a return to the
inclusion of common questions for the papers. For example, in the final examination a common question in
the General and Advanced papers, and another for the Extension and Advanced. This would provide statisti-
cians at the Board of Studies with the necessary data for comparison between the courses and scale the
marks accordingly. And hopefully we would finally have an answer to the question at the top of this article.

professional career. In some instances, a cadetship may lead to a graduate job offer.
About Meet The Business Leader:
The format of the event will include a series of employers who have representatives available
to speak to students and provide them with information on their cadet programs. There will
also be a Leadership Lounge Q&A Panel Session, where industry leaders will provide insight
