I recently received this article from the Guidance Group. I thought it would be a great article to share about the

effects of texting and online social networks. Although technology is a great tool and we know that everyone is

doing it, we also need information on how it impacts our children, students, and even, us adults. Nothing,absolutely nothing, can take the place of great parenting, friends, family, and support groups. I hope the

Now a new study done by Case Western Reserve School of Medicine has found that teens who are constantly

texting and using social networking sites-sending more than 120 texts a day or spending more than three hours

per school day on social network sites like Facebook --are at risk for a host of health and behavioral problems.

According to this study of teens living in the Midwest, 20% of teens fall into this category of texting too much or

spending too much time in social networks. While we can't say that one behavior causes another, the study found

that students who are "hyper-texting" are much more likely to participate in high risk behaviors, including

drinking, taking drugs, having multiple sexual partners, and smoking. It should not be surprising that thecontent of their communication is likely about things that are typically kept from adults. Texting has become the

favorite way to communicate among teens. According to a report by the Pew Research Center , half of teens send

50 or more text messages a day; one in three send more than 100 messages a day; and 15 percent send more than

200 text messages daily. That's more than 6,000 texts a month.

So what's a parent to do? This is the same answer that we give to most behavioral problems of children and teens:

1. Set clear limits. Limit time spent texting and on other forms of social networking, and back these limits up

with realistic consequences if they are broken.

2. Keep talking to your teens. Studies consistently show that when parents do something as simple as have dinner

with their teens 3 or more times a week, there is a significant reduction in high risk behaviors.3. Be a good role model. Put your gadgets away. Turn off the computer and TV. Live a healthy lifestyle that

includes time outside, good nutrition, daily exercise, and enough sleep.
