Father’s Focus 2
ARE WE THERE YET? Advent Reflections “Are we there yet?” This is the question virtually every kid asks on any long trip. “Are we there yet?” I remember asking that often. I am sure my brothers would agree, I prided myself on being the most annoying
person in the car. In fact, Mom and Dad used to have a saying: “Don’t feed Jarrod in the car!” If they would feed me, my energy would go through the roof. My “Mr. Hyde” would leap out of my “Dr. Jekkyl” and I would bounce all over the car! I suppose you could say I was a fidgety kid! So for me, as for many kids, any trip always seemed like a lo-o-ong trip. And yet this is a question that we find ourselves asking now: “Are we there yet?” The COVID crisis has been persisting for ten months now. Ten months! Who would have thought last March that we would be still seeing shutdowns and extreme precautions in December? And yet, here we are. Even with the possibility of a vaccine on the horizon, many of us are still wondering how much longer we will have to “bunker up” until this pandemic passes us. But there is an analogy in this pandemic that helps us understand our Christian faith. Ever since Adam and Eve ate the fruit, the human family has been experiencing the pandemic of sin. This pandemic threatens the life of our soul. In the Old Testament, God “quarantined” Israel in the promised land, giving them the Temple, the Prophets, the Kings, the Law, and the Torah. But that quarantine, like all quarantines, was to last only for a time. “But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons” (Gal 4:7). In other words, Jesus Christ came as the “vaccine” for sin and vice. Just like most vaccines work by injecting a small part of the virus into the immune system, so too, Jesus, “who knew no sin, became sin for us so that we might become the very righteousness of God” (2 Cor 5:21). Jesus became our vaccine; and anyone who, by faith, accepts Jesus receives “the precious and very great promise … to share in the divine nature” (1 Pet 4:7). By being united to Jesus, the pandemic of sin is removed from our humanity, and it is healed and restored even to the point of being united to God’s divine nature! And this is our Advent joy. Advent is a time for us to live the question, “Are we there yet?” Advent is a time of expectation. We recall that Jesus came among us, in HISTORY, as God-made-man, so that he can redeem us, in MYSTERY, through the sacraments, and direct us to our final glory with him, in MAJESTY. History, mystery, and majesty: these are the three comings of Christ that HAVE happened, ARE happening, and WILL come to completion. (Theologically, this is called Realized Eschatology). As so we, like kids on a long journey, live in that in-between time of “already-but-not-yet”: we are already on the journey of our salvation, but we have not yet arrived at our destination. So, family, don’t fret; we are on our way! But be patient, for our destination is still in front of us. And, even though Mom and Dad said, “Don’t feed Jarrod,” be sure to eat the Food For the Journey – the Eucharist – because, it does give us the energy to make it to our final destination. The Jesus who came (history)… IS the Eucharist now (mystery)… in whom we will rejoice forever in eternity (majesty).
- Fr. Jarrod Lies, pastor

YEAR-END GIFTS TO THE SFA BUILDING FUND In response to our several building and maintenance needs, over the past year, many parishioners have contributed $200,000 to the Building Fund. Within the last couple of weeks, two more anonymous donors offered gifts of $50,000 and $25,000 in response to our ongoing needs specific to the Building Fund. These gifts have been given as “seed” or “challenge” gifts to encourage other possible donors to con-sider giving to our building fund. These extraordinary gifts contribute to immediate needs in the area of HVAC, roofing and campus lighting. Building Fund envelopes are included in your monthly packet for you to use, or you may write “Building Fund” in the memo of your check. If you are able, please consider a gift to the St. Francis Building Fund as part of your year-end giving.

OPERATIONS COUNCIL
Advent is a season of anticipation, a season of thanks. May we be generous with the gift of our time in service of others. May we use our talents as a sign of our belief in our Savior. May we have a generous heart to give to those in need. Advent is a blessed time to count our blessings and look forward with hope to the days ahead.
- The Operations Council
What’s Happening ST. VINCENT de PAUL SOCIETY CORNER In today’s Gospel John the Baptist urges us to “Prepare the way of the Lord.” We are called to help prepare the way of the Lord by making the real meaning of Christmas come alive in our own hearts, in our family and to reach out to those in need. Your gift to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul brought light into the darkness surrounding the hearts of those living in poverty, bringing them the real, lasting, and deep joy of Christ-mas. Through October and November, the St. Francis Society of St. Vincent de Paul was able to assist 12 families with rent, utility payments, insurance payments and medical bills. Thank you for your generosity.
CHARITIES COMMITTEE FOOD DRIVE In lieu of our food drive, the Charities Committee invites you to donate to the Our Daily Bread food pantry.
