Many people come to Clunes in retirement, or semi-retirement, to seek a more peace fu l l i f e , sometimes after having experienced being a ‘weekender’ for a few years. But usually they are in their 50s or 60s when they do. Dean Homicki is unusual in that he was able to retire and do the ‘tree change’ at 35. He and Anna had a holiday house in Talbot, where they came most weekends with their young son, Alex. They loved it and were tired of the hectic life in Melbourne. They thought: why wait till you’re old to have the life you really want? So Dean so ld h i s bus iness – des igning and manufactur ing disability products – and they bought the former Catho l i c Presbyter y at auction (a ver y vigorous auction - you’d remember if you were there) and proceeded to renovate it and build a lovely garden.
All of that was in 2010. Dean and Anna have since settled very well into the township and have made some wonder fu l contributions.
Anna soon became involved in the Clunes community, joining the committee of the Neighbourhood House, where she is now the president. She is very involved in their son Alex’s school, Ballarat Grammar, and also works nowadays with Dean.
Dean i s an ent repreneur, eng ineer, des igner, j e we l l e r, musician, writer, former CEO of his company (where, at its peak, he employed 30 staff and contractors over two offices) and something of
a philosopher - in other words a very talented person. He was able to retire so young because he was willing to trade-in his business for something of greater importance –He and Anna were courageous enough to take a step into a new lifestyle, at a stage of life when most people stick to the nine-to-five working routine. Then, after 3 years of ‘retirement’, Dean felt the urge to start up a new venture and ‘Skemah’ was born. Skemah is a garden design business, creating such things as large planter boxes, ga rden edg ing , pa v ing and sculptures. One planter, displayed in the showroom, is large enough to take a full-sized tree, which can be moved around on wheels.
Anna is creating the business processes and procedures, drawing from her experience as a sales representative and professional Interior Designer. She still manages
to fit in an ‘interior or two’ for regional and city clients amongst the work load of home and the Skemah office.
Dean’s clients are commercial businesses and Open Gardens, and he operates internationally. Clunes locals don’t buy his products, and yet Dean has created a fascinating presence in the main street. He rents space from the owners of the Club Hotel – a place which has sadly been closed for several years now – and he is conscious of ‘filling a hole’ there. People call in to chat, especially men, and the place has

A Community GrantThank you to Hepburn Shire CEO, Aaron van
Egmond, for finding a way for our CTDA application for a Community Grant, for $5,000, to go ahead. At the time of going to press, we await with interest to see if we are successful in updating our clunes.org website which will allow all community groups to have a page of their own without cost to their group, while bringing community activities more available to everyone. The result will be known as this newsletter is delivered.
Happy Christmas to all! As we approach the festive season, may we think
of those not as fortunate as ourselves and give thanks for what we enjoy, especially here in this great country with so many benefits.
May you, your family and friends enjoy a Happy and Holy Christmas and a Prosperous 2015.

become like a drop-in centre at times. It certainly isn’t like your average shop. One local person gives Dean sayings and poems on pieces of coloured paper, which he and Anna display all across the back wall of the shop. Dean loves the writings and sees that encouraging such creativity is doing a great thing.
Dean finds the Clunes community to be diverse, rich and fascinating. Everything is ‘open’ and people are both opinionated and friendly. He is conscious of how much is achieved by many creative people here, and he is proud to be one of them.
Dean ha s recent l y been in London developing g a r d e n o p p o r t u n i t i e s . Meanwhile, back in Melbourne, Skemah won a Gold Medal Award for bes t Garden des ign , through the Grand Designs television program with landscape designer Stephen Read.
It’s fascinating to think that a business like Skemah, which is growing rapidly, is attracting clients all over the world and participates in prestigious awards, is based in a little town like Clunes.
People like Dean and Anna are of great value to Clunes because of their innovative work, proactive attitudes, optimism and willingness to help others.
Australia Day 2015Events in Clunesby Linda Newitt
Community members are invited to join in Clunes’ traditional Australia Day celebrations on Monday 26 January.
If you haven’t yet experienced the wonderful sunrise walk up Mount Beckworth then make 2015 your year. This is a very popular event organised by Helen Hardy and includes a pancake breakfast. A great start to the day.
The day will conclude with a community barbecue in Collins Place and Flag Lowering Ceremony. Live music will be provided by the band Tangent covering a range of great hits. This band features many of the musicians who put on such a great performance last year and they promise an even better performance this year under the new line up.
Look out for the posters around town with detailed times a little closer to the day.
Clunes Australia Day events are auspiced by the CTDA and are made possible with the support of the Hepburn Shire Council. Anyone interested in helping with the barbecue for an hour or two would be most warmly welcomed. If you are able to help out please contact Linda Newitt on 0447 915 576.
Clunes Market Fundingby Leanne Kamp
It is wonderful, wonderful news that the Clunes Market is receiving funding after fighting for this for so long.
The funding that we have received from Regional Development Victoria is strictly for a Farmers Market which includes produce, fruit, vegetables, livestock and anything that is farm produced or homegrown. To get the funding from RDV we had to first raise $6,500. The donors for this funding included the Hepburn Shire, Clunes Tourist & Development Association and businesses and individuals in Clunes.
We are aiming to have a market commencing in March 2015 and we have a lot of work to do between now and then but with strong local support we will get there.
At present, we are putting a dedicated committee together. We are now looking for people who would like to help in any way they can, to become ‘Friends of the Market’. Anybody who can spare a couple of hours once every six months and would like to become involved in the Clunes Market please let me know. Of course, there are always other positions available which will require more input than that if you would like to be involved at that level. My contact details are ph: 5345 3375 or email: [email protected].
Christmas CheersFrom the Clunes Community Newsletter Team
Thanks to everyone that has contributed to the ever popular Clunes Community Newsletter for 2014.
We are very grateful for the kind words of encouragement we get in the way it is presented and up-to-date news.
We look forward to all your reports, articles and photographs in 2015.
The volunteer team is having a month’s rest, so there will be no newsletter in January. Next newsletter will be February 2015, and submissions for this edition are due by 10th January.
We take this opportunity to thank local printers, Pete and Cate Billing for their professionalism and efficiency in the production and to our friendly posties Geoff and Jane for delivery.
We wish all our readers a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. - Jane, Lily, Judy & Ken.

Clunes Landcare and Waterways Group by Sue Kelman
As the year draws to a close its time for us at Landcare to reflect on our achievements and the tremendous work that our volunteers, Wesley staff and pupils and the pupils of Clunes Primary School have contributed to the successes of Clunes Waterways and Landcare Group.
Everyone has pulled together with the planting of the creek banks, the endless weeding and watering so that we are all now able to see the benefits of the care of the group and many others in our community.
Because of the work of the group we have had a wonderful Frogtober which has taught us all much more about our creek creatures, we have had the assistance of the Clunes Art Group in staging the event, art works from the Primary School and Wesley College, support from Five Mile Creek and the IGA. I am sure that you, like I, would like to give them a very big thank you, particularly when you walk along the creek path this summer. And just in case you need to fill the odd moment or so we always appreciate help with watering, and we have new equipment to make it easier, please let us know if you can help.
Merry Christmas and a Happy Healthy New Year from all at Clunes Landcare!!

Preparing for the Fire SeasonA message from the Clunes Fire Brigade
Are you ready for the fire season?
Believe it or not Clunes is in a high risk fire area. The weather of the past months has provided ideal conditions for the growth of fuels for fires. This year there is a real threat of fire in the district. The only way to stay safe is to plan for the fire season.
Talk to everyone you live with about your plans so you all know what you’ll do on a bad day. A written fire plan may save your life – would you remember a plan that’s just in your head if you’re surrounded by smoke, heat, flame and noise? Plan for all scenarios – what will you do if your car won’t start, the wind changes direction, roads are blocked, someone is hurt or people aren’t where you expect them to be?
Pack a relocation kit with important documents, photos, medications, money and clothes so you’re ready to leave early. Practise packing and leaving.
Don’t rely on getting a warning – it’s your responsibility to know when to leave. Decide in advance what you’ll do with your pets and livestock – people die during fires trying to save their animals. If you’re in two minds about leaving, you should leave early. Wait and it’s too late.
Check out CFA’s website – cfa.vic.gov.au – or call the Victorian Bushfire Information Line on 1800 240 667 for more information on how to stay safe this summer.
Fire restrictions are now in force. Burning off is not permitted without a permit.
Members of the Clunes fire brigade will be available on Saturday mornings in the main street to answer any questions that you may have regarding fire safety.
We will also be at the following locations in Clunes from 11.30 – 12.30:Saturday 30 Nov - Boundary St Railway CrossingSunday 7 Dec - Clunes/Maryborough Rd & Fairview RdSunday 14 Dec - Coundon & MacDonald Streets
The brigade is currently distributing the 2015 calendar, if you haven’t received one by the middle of December, contact one of the brigade members on a Saturday morning in the main street.
The Clunes Fire Brigade Officers and Members wish every one a happy and safe Christmas

Local wedding celebrates region’s bountyby Prue Simmons
Clunes couple Prue Simmons and Stacy Elson tied the knot in November, in a ceremony and ce lebrat ion that showca sed the s tunning loca l l andscape , food , w ine and community. Amidst the gorgeous gardens o f the Beckworth Court ‘Redesdale’ homestead and overlooking the volcanic plains landscape, the vibrant couple expressed their love for each other and the region they now call home.
Passionate about the Clunes area and supporting businesses and culinary artisans from the local region, the couple sourced their food and beverages from much of the surrounding area.
Wedding guests were treated to an array of amazing local products, including Beckworth Wines, Goldfields Cheeses, country-style smallgoods supplied by Five Mile Creek, Phoenix Grove Olive Oil, sourdough bread from O’Hara’s Bakery, wood-fired pizzas from The Forge, craft beer from Holgate Brewery, sparkling and white wines from the Pyrenees, fresh fruit from Clunes IGA and Clunes Greengrocer and soft drinks from Daylesford & Hepburn Springs Mineral Water Company. In addition, friends made salads and homemade dips from backyard produce and, with the assistance of Karolina, a number of community members contributed gorgeous flowers from their garden to decorate the ceremony and reception. The handmade theme continued with candles by Delicious Whimsy and Prue hand-weaving her own table runners for the reception and a beautiful shawl to go with her dress.
Creative Clunes assisted with tables and seating and Jayne Newgreen, Lily Mason, Jane Cox, Graeme Johnstone, Steve and Tessa Ambrose were incredibly helpful with setting up the venue.
Prue and Stace would like to thank Kevin and Prue Riddell for allowing them to hold the ceremony at their beautiful ‘Redesdale’ homestead and also send out a huge thank you to everyone from the community that attended, assisted, contributed or wished them well on their special day. It was a true coming together of community and a truly magical day for the pair.

Thank You Cardby Jane Lesock
The CTDA received a lovely “thank you” card from recent visitors to Clunes.
“To the good folks of Clunes, we write to thank you for our lovely stay in your town. We stayed four nights at the B&B XII Stone Steps of Clunes, during which time we pottered around the area. Dined at Lucky Strike (fab anchovy dish), drank local wines (thanks to Beckworth’s yummy Pinot Noir), ate fresh veggies and good cheese from the Greengrocer, dined on lush lasagna at the community dinner and met lots of lovely people and happy days. Oh yes, loved the sounds of the frogs. So thanks for a fab stay” -Linda & Wayne, Bridgewater, South Australia.

Lucky Strike EventsBroderick Smith Wows the Crowd by Gary Sharp
Broderick Smith entertained the crowd at Lucky Strike Lounge in Clunes one sunny Sunday afternoon (9 Nov).
Broder ick , who wa s sponsored by Lucky Strike Lounge, Mount Beckworth Winery and Ballarat by the Glass, performed two lengthy sets and at the f inish, the audience just wouldn’t let him leave the stage - and Brod was most obliging!
The crowd were total ly enraptured with Brod’s songs, his harmonica virtuosos and his amusing anecdotes between songs, most of which had a moral tale about life (as we get older!).
Brod will return early next year, just make sure you don’t miss it!!

Summer-time Hintsby the Clunes Museum
To Keep Flies Out of a House.----Never allow a speck of food to remain uncovered in dining-room or pantry any length of time after meals. Never leave remnants of food exposed that you intend for cat or hens. Feed at once, or cover their food at a distance from the house. Let nothing decay from the house. Keep your dining-room and pantry windows open a few inches most of the time. Darken your room and pantry when not in use. If there should be any flies they will go to the window when the room is darkened, where they are easily caught, killed, or brushed out. -----An article from the Clunes Guardian and Gazette December 30, 1904.

Beat’s Bit:Dear fellow burghers of Clunes and District,My “blurb” for this month is heavily coloured by
the recent unfortunate burglary of our Men’s Shed. For those that don’t know the shed was broken into in the early hours of Friday 7 November with the resultant theft of many of our mechanical and woodwork hand tools, welders, welding equipment, power tools, compressor etc . A conser vat ive est imate for replacement is approximately $6500 to $7000.
The “blokes” at the shed had spent many hours working to purchase these tools and equipment (together with some generous donations) and the theft leaves us well behind (probably 8-12 months work) in developing the shed and its facilities!
Courses run by the Neighbourhood House at the shed are also impacted as Welding and Woodwork classes now don’t have the wherewithal to proceed until insurance claims are resolved.
All-in-all a most annoying situation. We wish Victor ia Pol ice the best of good for tune in apprehending what appear to be a well organized crew that obviously have extensive experience in such matters. All I can say is that I hope you use the stolen tools to get a real job!
On to more pleasant issues…By the time this newsletter is published the
GRASSLANDS production will be upon us. ALL Clunes residents, family and friends are most welcome to attend the performances at the Neighbourhood House on the evenings of Friday 28 and Saturday 29 November. There is NO entry fee and food will be provided by the Neighbourhood House as a fund raiser, Mt Beckworth Wines will be selling wine by the glass.
Ken Evans and Rebecca Russell have done a great job in assembling a professional crew (and building the set). They should be great performances, SO COME ALONG!
I would also like to thank the Clunes Primary School for their donation of their superseded photocopier/printer to the Neighbourhood House. This kind gesture should enable us to spend a larger
portion of our limited finances on developing and running programs and courses rather than spending on administrative expenses. THANK YOU.
Final observations: October proved to be another good month for the Neighbourhood House with participant numbers of 287 (down from Sept. but still very healthy). I can also report we ran 48 “sessions” for the month i.e.: classes, activities, dinners, etc. A new record for 2014!
Ever onwards and upwards,Beat Wittwer, Co-Ordinator.
Community Feedback Wanted
Readers of this newsletter segment may know that we have been extolling the virtues of obtaining YOUR feedback on your views of the Neighbourhood House, its programs and potential activities you, as the community, would like to see.
Dur ing No vember /December we wi l l be formalizing this process via a questionnaire/survey we have developed.
Our Volunteers will be setting up a table in Fraser St. periodically and will be accosting you, the unsuspecting public, and asking you to express your views as part of this survey. We will not be asking for names and addresses - it will be confidential. The survey will take about 5-7 minutes of your time. PLEASE HELP by expressing your thoughts, perceptions, etc.
The feedback we are seeking will be used to help us develop our Business Plan for 2015 and to ensure we are going in a direction that the community expects of us and to give us feedback on how you perceive us to ensure we improve where we have weaknesses.
If we don’t know we can’t fix it... so please tell us! Surveys are also available at the Neighbourhood
House. Feel free to drop in and complete one.

Community DinnersOur big fat Christmas Dinner
As you wi l l know our Neighbourhood House Community Dinners have been progressing well and are held every Tuesday evening at the Old Town Hall supper room.
We are now in the throes of planning a big, fat Christmas Dinner for Tuesday 23 December
We intend serving the gamut of Christmas fare (including vegetarian, etc.) and plan to keep the cost at our usual $5 per adult, $3 per child.
We will post information notices in the usual places once plans are finalised. Keep your eye out and join us for a “jolly” time.
(Debate is underway to determine if we will have Santa, etc... It won’t be me despite the existing white facial hair and the portly stature!!)
Pect-in Clunes: Village Preserving Festa
With the onset of summer and the ripening of local fruit (and tomatoes ? ) the Clunes Neighbourhood House is planning to run several preserving/sauce/relish/jam/paste-making events as the produce ripens.
Skilled preservers, jam and sauce makers, etc., will be available to oversee and teach.
So, as our plums, quinces, nectarines, tomatoes, olives, apples, etc., ripen the idea is to bring the fruit to the kitchen and we will have a communal bottling.
Food and drink to be had and a general “jolly” time as we emulate the southern European tradition of an “all in” food preserving party.
If you have a fruit tree/trees and don’t use the produce yourself, let us know - we can help harvest (or bring it along) and join in.
You can have the produce back (at a modest cost for jars/sugar, etc.) or donate it and we will on-sell it as a fundraiser.
We will post notices around town letting people know what we will be preserving and when.
The intention is to include stone fruit, tomatoes, olives (table), apples, pears, quinces, etc., as they ripen.
LET US KNOW IF YOU ARE INTERESTED...(and if you will have fruit).
