Student LoansEducation loans come in three primary categories: student

loans, parent loans and private student loans. There is also a consolidation loan, which allows the borrower a simplified payment that wraps up a series of loans into one. There are also peer-to-peer education loans. All told, more than $100 billion in federal education loans and $10 billion in private student loans are made available to students each year.

The Direct Loan program makes money available through the college’s financial aid office with funds provided by the US Department of Education. It is an alphabet soup of loans, Stafford, Plus, Consolidation, etc.

Few can afford to pay for college without some form of education financing. Two-thirds (65.6%) of 4-year undergraduate students graduated with a Bachelor’s degree and some debt in 2007-08, and the average student loan debt among graduating seniors was $23,186 (excluding PLUS Loans but including Stafford, Perkins, state, college and private loans).

Among graduating 4-year undergraduate students who applied for federal student aid, 86.3% borrowed to pay for their education and the average cumulative debt was $24,651. (For just federal student loan debt, excluding PLUS Loans, the figures are 61.6% and $17,878.) Average cumulative debt increased by 5.6% or $1,139 a year since 2003-04. When one includes PLUS loans in the total, 66.0% of 4-year undergraduate students graduated with some debt in 2007-08, and the average cumulative debt incurred was $27,803.

ScholarshipsUnlike student loans, undergrad scholarships and graduate

school fellowships do not have to be repaid. Hundreds of thousands of scholarships and fellowships from several thousand sponsors are awarded each year.

For the most part scholarships and fellowships are reserved for students with special qualifications, such as academic, athletic or artistic talent. Awards are also available for students who are interested in particular fields of study, who are members of underrepresented groups, who live in certain areas of the country or who demonstrate financial need.

The best way to search for scholarships and fellowships is to use a personalized search, like the FastWeb scholarship search. It works by matching the information in your completed profile to scholarships from a database of over 1.5 million scholarships worth over $3.4 billion. If you supply an email address, they will notify you when new awards that match your profile are added to the database. FastWeb also includes a college search and numerous other student resources.

In addition to FastWeb, you may want to search one of the other free scholarship search sites. It doesn’t take much time to

search and it’s free. To find small local awards, look for notices posted on bulletin boards at your school’s guidance office, the public library and outside the financial aid office at nearby colleges and universities.

College alumni and other private scholarship sponsors occasionally establish scholarships with very specific eligibility requirements that you just might meet.

There are many scholarships for average students that focus on qualities besides academic merit, as well as a variety of less competitive scholarships. There are also many community service scholarships and scholarships for hispanic and latino students.

Scholarships that sound too good to be true usually are. Learn how to recognize and protect yourself from the most common scholarship scams. The number one tip: If you have to pay money to get money, it’s probably a scam.

It is important to ask the school’s financial aid office about its outside scholarship policy, since this can affect how much you benefit from winning a scholarship if you are receiving need-based student aid.

A portion of your scholarship might be taxable. Usually amounts used for tuition and required fees are tax-free, but you should review the rules to ensure that you report the scholarship correctly.

Here are some of the most commonly asked questions about financial aid.1. I probably don’t qualify for aid. Should I apply for aid anyway?Yes. Many families mistakenly think they don’t qualify for aid and prevent themselves from receiving financial aid by failing to apply for it. In addition, there are a few sources of aid such as unsubsidized Stafford and PLUS loans that are available regardless of need. The FAFSA form is free. There is no good excuse for not applying.2. Do I need to be admitted before I can apply for financial aid at a particular university?No. You can apply for financial aid any time after January 1. To actually receive funds, however, you must be admitted and enrolled at the university.3. Why can’t I submit my financial aid application before January 1?The need analysis process for financial aid uses the family’s income and tax information from the most recent tax year (the base year) to judge your eligibility for need-based financial aid during the upcoming academic year (the award year). Since the base year ends December 31, you cannot submit a financial aid application until January 1. After all, your parents might earn a year-end bonus or realize capital gains from selling stocks on December 31. If you submit the financial aid application before January 1, it will be rejected.4. Do I have to reapply for financial aid every year?Yes. Most financial aid offices require that you apply for financial aid every year. If your financial circumstances change, you may get more or less aid. After your first year you will receive a “Renewal Application” which contains preprinted information from the previous year’s FAFSA. Note that your eligibility for financial aid may change significantly, especially if you have a different number of family members in college. Renewal of your financial aid package also depends on your making satisfactory academic progress toward a degree, such as earning a minimum number of credits and achieving a minimum GPA.5. How do I apply for a Pell Grant and other types of need-based aid?Submit a FAFSA. To indicate interest in student employment, student loans and parent loans,

you should check the appropriate boxes. Checking these boxes does not commit you to accepting these types of aid. You will have the opportunity to accept or decline each part of your aid package later. Leaving these boxes unchecked will not increase the amount of grants you receive.6. Are my parents responsible for my educational loans?No. Parents are, however, responsible for the Federal PLUS loans. Parents will only be responsible for your educational loans if they co-sign your loan. In general you and you alone are responsible for repaying your educational loans. You do not need to get your parents to cosign your federal student loans, even if you are under age 18, as the ‘defense of infancy’ does not apply to federal student loans. (The defense of infancy presumes that a minor is not able to enter into contracts, and considers any such contract to be void. There is an explicit exemption to this principle in the Higher Education Act with regard to federal student loans.) However, lenders may require a cosigner on private student loans if your credit history is insufficient or if you are underage. In fact, many private student loan programs are not available to students under age 18 because of the defense of infancy.If your parents (or grandparents) want to help pay off your loan, you can have your billing statements sent to their address. Likewise, if your lender or loan servicer provides an electronic payment service, where the monthly payments are automatically deducted from a bank account, your parents can agree to have the payments deducted from their account. But your parents are under no obligation to repay your loans. If they forget to pay the bill on time or decide to cancel the electronic payment agreement, you will be held responsible for the payments, not them.7. Where can I get information about Federal student financial aid?Call the Federal Student Aid Information Center (FSAIC) at 1-800-4-FED-AID (1-800-433-3243) or 1-800-730-8913 (if hearing impaired) and ask for a free copy of The Student Guide: Financial Aid from the US Department of Education. This toll free hotline is run by the US Department of Education and can answer questions about federal and state student aid programs and applications. You can also write to Federal Student Aid Information Center, PO Box 84, Washington, DC 20044.

Saving for College According to the Consumer Price Index (CPI), college tuition

increased by 8 percent per year, on average, from 1979 to 2001. If that trend continues, children born today will face college costs that could be four times current prices by the time they are ready for college.

The rule of thumb finds parents paying at least half to two-thirds of college costs through a combination of savings, current income, and loans. Government aid, college, university and private scholarships accounts for only about a third of total college costs.

Naturally, you cannot start saving for your child’s education too early in life, even as early as the day the child is born. Time is one of the most valuable assets. The sooner you start saving, the more time the money you set aside for college will have to grow.

If you start saving early enough, even a modest weekly or monthly investment can grow to a significant college fund. For example, saving $50 a month from birth would yield about $20,000 by the time the child turns 17, assuming a 7 percent return on investment. Saving $200 a month could turn into almost $80,000.

Paying for college by saving before your child is of college age definitely costs much less than paying for college afterward. Saving $200 a month for ten years at 7 percent interest would yield $34,818.89. Borrowing the same amount at 6.8% interest with a ten year term would require payments of $400.70 a month. At 8.5% interest the payments increase to $431.70 a month.

Even if college is just a year or two away, it is never too late to start saving. There are tax benefits to saving in a section 529 college savings plan or prepaid tuition plan, and every dollar you save is a

dollar less you’ll need to borrow.There are many topics to master: Setting savings goals, savings

Juniors and seniors from 50 local high schools earn scholarships based on their character, rather than grades, in the Greater Alabama Council BSA Youth Leadership Development Program (YLDP). These students are chosen to represent their high schools by their principals, counselors and teachers based upon the behavior and character they have demonstrated in school. “No other single program provides so much for so many throughout the metro area,” says Tom Surtees, Director Alabama Department of Industrial Relations, and YLDP’s chairman of community advisory committee.

The YLDP was founded by Dr. Kevin Walsh in 2008, and he remains executive director of the program. Since the program’s inception more than $700,000 in scholarships have been awarded. YLDP’s director, Libby Holmes, of Jefferson State Community College, expects $750,000 of scholarships to be awarded in 2013. “This program is a true consortium of the Greater Alabama Council of the Boy Scouts of America, the United Way, public and private schools, higher education, and the business community uniting to support todays’ youth and to prepare tomorrow’s leaders,” says Holmes.

The YLDP is a nine-month program. Students meet once a month to hear one or two outstanding speakers, chosen for his/her accomplishments, stature, and character. Also, during these sessions, leadership lessons and activities are led by Jefferson State Community College’s Phi Theta Kappa honor students and Dr. Liesl Harris, who serves as associate director of the program. There are also three community service activities, in which the participants are encouraged to participate. Successful participants are graduated

with a Youth Leadership Development Program certificate and are eligible to apply for available scholarships. “The success of YLDP is evident in the number of students participating, in the support of high school counselors and teachers, in the energy that surrounds the program and in the truly magnificent corporate and community support resulting in scholarships for so many of the participants,” states Jefferson State Community College President, Judy Merritt.

Each year the YLDP kicks off with the “Charles Andrew von Herrmann Opening Ceremony,” hosted by Homewood High School. Local dignitaries are in attendance to encourage the students in their continued education. “Last year our keynote speaker was Dr. Larry Delucus, former astronaut and current UAB professor. This year we are honored to have American Hero Colonel, Leo Thorsness, recipient of the Congressional Medal of Honor, six year prisoner of war, and author of Surviving Hell as our keynote speaker,” states Geri Albright, Lawson State Community College’s associate director of YLPD.

Students must attend six monthly meetings or more to qualify for a scholarship, which are awarded on a point system. A total of 60 points, earned by attending meetings, running for YLDP office, participating in a service project, readings, essays, and recommendations must be earned in order to apply for a scholarship and receive an YLDP diploma. Scholarships are awarded on total points and the students’ individual choices of where they want to attend college. “It was a life changing experience in which I made friends that will last a lifetime,” says YLDP scholarship recipient, Richard T. Colley, III. “These life lessons will stick with me for many years.”

Higher education partners include Auburn University, Birmingham Southern College, Jacksonville State University, Jefferson State Community College, Lawson State Community College, Miles College, Troy University, UAB, University of Alabama, University of Montevallo, University of West Alabama, and Wallace State Community College.

In addition to these institutions, vital support for this youth opportunity has come from the United Way of Central Alabama and many other community resources. “This program would not be possible without many people in our community, including but not limited to Miles College President, Dr. George French, Jr., Dr. Judy Merritt, President of Jefferson State Community College; Lawson State Community College President, Dr. Perry Ward; President of the University of Montevallo, Dr. John Stuart; Dr. Carol Garrison, UAB President,” says Walsh. “Their help along with the community support of Mr. Fred von Herrmann, Dave Wood, III the CEO of Wood Fruitticher, Representative Arthur Payne, St. Vincent’s CEO, John O’Neal, Dr. Larry Lemak, and Doug Key, CEO Mutual Savings Credit Union, helped get the program off the ground.”

In 2012 the YLDP honored Walsh with an annual summer camp, named for him, “Walsh Academy of Leadership,” held at University of Montevallo and American Village where YLDP students are invited to “Scale the WAL” in an intensive, three day leadership camp.

At Auburn University, students have described the appeal of campus as “something special” for more than 150 years. Results from a pioneering study known

as the Collegiate Learning Assessment at universities around the nation show significant gains in the intellectual skills of Auburn students -- more than 100 points on SAT-equivalent tests -- from their freshman to senior years. Auburn placed in the top third of the institutions participating.

In several disciplines, students have the opportunity to earn credit for a master’s degree while still working toward their undergraduate diploma in an accelerated bachelor’s/master’s program. It’s an attractive option for highly motivated students, who want to use their academic talents to more quickly earn an advanced degree through a rigorous course of study.

Auburn’s Draughon Library is the largest library in the state. The Auburn University Libraries contain 3.2 million volumes and subscribe to 19,000 journals and 256 electronic databases. It also serves as an instructional resource for faculty and houses a new Learning Commons for students and one of two locations for the new Miller Writing Center.

Another aspect of our exceptional learning environment involves Auburn’s Learning Communities, which are

designed to group students with similar academic interests to build support groups for long-term academic development. The Village residential community was built to facilitate that model, and more opportunities are being developed to encourage student involvement in service learning, another widely cited element of individual academic growth.

Auburn strongly believes that international skills and abilities are essential for all of its students. The Office of International Education has named 2012 to be the Year of East Asia and has developed programming for all students. The Auburn Abroad Office coordinates faculty-led study tours, educational exchanges and international internships helping our students gain cross-cultural competencies that foster success in the global arena. Each school and college at Auburn now has at least one study abroad program, and the number of students traveling abroad through these programs increases each year.

Outcomes for graduates show high satisfaction rates with 97 percent of Auburn alumni rating their experience as excellent, and 94 percent saying if they had to make the choice again, they would choose Auburn.

Miles College- a senior, liberal arts, church related college with roots in the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church and in the tradition of the Historically Black College- motivates and directs its students to seek holistic development that leads to intellectual, ethical, spiritual and service-oriented lives.

Miles College, founded in 1898, is a premier liberal arts institution located in metropolitan Birmingham within the corporate limits of the City of Fairfield. The noble founders of the institution saw educated leadership as the paramount need in the black community. Miles, which is fully accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and accredited by Commission on Colleges for the awarding of Baccalaureate Degrees, is the only four-year institution in historic Birmingham, Alabama designated as a member of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU). Miles College is a science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) higher learning institution. The College is one of only 39 HBCUs to have the designation of a United Negro College Fund (UNCF) institution.

Miles College has as its brand civic engagement and activism. In essence, the Civil Rights Movement, in-part came to Birmingham Alabama, because of the

activism of students at Miles College, helping to make Birmingham, Alabama the Civil Rights Capital of the world.

The College offers baccalaureate programs with majors such as Accounting, Biology, Business Administration, Chemistry, Communications, Computer and Information Sciences, History, Language Arts, Criminal Justice, Early Childhood/Elementary Education, English, Mathematics, Political Science and Social Work. In sum, Miles offers 28 Bachelor Degree programs in six academic divisions to an enrollment of approximately 1,700 students.

We attribute the success of our students to diligence and academic seriousness as well as to the faculty members who immerse themselves into the education of students. Faculty members not only teach students inside of the classroom; but, are part of their external classroom lives as well. For example, the First Year Enrichment Program is geared to help students develop leadership skills and augment the classroom

experience. Under the leadership of President

George T. French, Jr., Miles College is strong financially, and in 2006 purchased a new 41-acres campus adjacent to the existing campus. Previously “landlocked,” this acquisition enabled Miles to double the land size of the College.

Campus Life at Miles is robust. With an active Panhellenic Council and champion sports teams, including football, basketball and baseball, there is much to choose from at Miles. The Miles College marching band, referred to as the “Purple Marching Machine”, has been thrilling audiences with their high energy performances for decades.

HistorySamford University was chartered as

Howard College in Marion, Ala., in 1841 by a group of Alabama Baptists. It took its name from John Howard, an 18th century British prison reformer. After surviving two destructive fires and the Civil War, the college moved to Birmingham’s East Lake area in 1887. Howard became coeducational in 1913 and enjoyed a period of growth before the onset of the Great Depression brought hard times in the 1930s. Under the presidency of Major Harwell G. Davis (1939-57), Howard rebounded in the 1940s, thanks in part to a Navy V-12 program during World War II that brought the school men and money. Hemmed in by its neighborhood with little prospect for growth, Howard began looking for a new campus site, settling on a spacious 400-acre plot in Shades Valley. Laying the cornerstone to the first building in 1955, Howard moved to its Homewood campus in 1957. There, the college thrived, acquiring the Cumberland School of Law in 1961 and changing its name to Samford University in 1965, honoring the family of its longtime board chairman, Frank Park Samford. Enrollment climbed as new programs and facilities were added during the presidency of Leslie S. Wright (1958-83). A period of increased national and international recognition followed under President Thomas E. Corts (1983-2006)

as enrollment, endowment, academic and athletic programs grew, supported to some extent by gifts of more than $100 million from the family of Ralph W. Beeson. Under its current president, Andrew Westmoreland, inaugurated in 2006, Samford enjoys an endowment of more than $240 million and eight thriving schools. It has been Alabama’s largest private university for more than half a century. During the 2011-12 academic year, Samford’s enrollment was 4,715.

Important Areas of StudySamford offers 135 undergraduate

majors, minors and concentrations. It has a student-to-faculty ratio of 12-to-1, with no classes taught by graduate assistants. Among its more important areas of study are nursing, through the Ida V. Moffett School of Nursing; entrepreneurship, through the Brock School of Business; and a new worship leadership minor in the School of the Arts. Samford offers an innovative liberal arts curriculum through its University Fellows honors program. It provides a broad array of international study opportunities throughout its curriculum, with programs touching five continents.

Campus LifeSamford has a vibrant program of

campus life for students from 47 states and 16 nations. About two of every three undergraduates live on campus, and programs of recreation, co-curricular involvement in clubs and organizations, intramurals, athletics, publications and university ministries are open to all students. Samford is a member of the Southern Conference, the fourth oldest major college athletic conference in the U.S. Step Sing, an annual February musical extravaganza that had its beginning in 1951, involves about 1,000 students in a spirited competition between campus organizations. Family Weekend and Homecoming are annual fall events that involve hundreds of students, faculty, staff, parents and alumni. Samford places a high priority

on community outreach programs, and hundreds of students annually volunteer to serve in work projects with neighborhoods, schools, churches and other organizations to the betterment of their communities.

each of its eight schools, enrolling more than 1,700 students in various master’s and doctoral degree programs. Three of the schools—Cumberland School of Law, McWhorter School of Pharmacy and Beeson Divinity School—offer graduate programs exclusively. The Brock School of Business, Ida V. Moffett School of Nursing, Orlean Bullard Beeson School of Education and Professional Studies, Howard College of Arts and Sciences and School of the Arts offer a multiplicity of graduate degrees.

The University of Alabama has ranked among the top 50 public universities in the nation in U.S. News and World Report’s annual college rankings for more than a decade. UA is ranked 31st, its highest ranking ever, in the 2012 rankings. The University of Alabama ranked 2nd in the nation among public universities in the enrollment of National Merit Scholars in the 2011 freshman class.

Auburn University programs named to U.S. News & World Report’s inaugural Top Online Education Program Honor Roll for 2012. Auburn has been named by Kiplinger’s Personal Finance as one of the top 100 Best Values in Public Colleges for 2011-12. The university is the oldest four-year, coeducational school in the state and the second-oldest in the Southeast. Women were first admitted in 1892.

UAB has been named three consecutive years among the top 10 universities nationally for diversity (currently 5th) by The Princeton Review. It ranks 32nd nationally in federal research funding and 20th in funding from the National Institutes of Health (10th among public universities). UAB is among the top 200 universities internationally, and top 100 in life sciences, according to Academic Ranking of World Universities. It is the second largest academic medical center in the nation, home to the largest hospital in Alabama and 14th largest in the nation.

Birmingham-Southern has a groundbreaking new interdisciplinary major that is perfect for creative talent. Beginning in fall 2010, students can opt for Media and Film Studies. The program will explore all types of media, including film or video, art, digital media, broadcast, print, photojournalism, and social networking. The major is distinctive to the Southeast and is designed to provide critical communication skills for students of the 21st century.

In 2011, Jacksonville State University became one of the many universities across the country to participate in the Red Balloon Initiative sponsored by the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU). The initiative says higher education must re-imagine and re-invent education in order to perpetuate the current, albeit, subtle, paradigm shift from the belief that colleges and universities exist to provide instruction to the ideology that colleges and universities are institutions that exist

to produce learning. Under the leadership of President George T. French, Jr., Miles

College in 2006 purchased a new 41-acres campus adjacent to the existing campus. Previously “landlocked,” this acquisition enabled Miles to double the land size of the College.

Samford University is ranked fourth in the South by U.S. News & World Report. The Princeton Review named Samford as a “Best Southeastern College.” Named a College of Distinction for 2011–2012. Kiplinger’s Personal Finance has named Samford #65 of the top 100 best value private universities in the U.S. Samford’s endowment of more than $210 million places it in the top 30 percent of the more than 3,600 universities and colleges in America.

The University of Montevallo, well known for its picturesque, arboretum-like campus of 160 acres and famous for its red-brick streets and pathways, was founded October 12, 1896. Hundreds of alumni return to the campus each February for Homecoming — and for College Night, known as the only Homecoming tradition of its kind in the nation. College Night is a festival of comedy, drama, music and athletics that actually lasts four nights. The Purples and Golds showcase their talents by presenting original musical productions. College Night debuted in 1919.

Belhaven University, formerly Belhaven College, has created an adult completion program that is tailored to the needs of busy, working adults. With multiple campuses (Jackson, Miss.; Orlando, Fla.; Houston, Tex.; Memphis and Chattanooga, Tenn. and Atlanta, Ga.), a multitude of undergraduate and graduate programs, and a Christian-based curriculum, Belhaven University offers you a chance to earn a degree without putting your life on hold.

A recent evaluation by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence and NATEF determined that Bevill State Community College’s Auto Technology Programs is a quality, certified program. Among the various occupations Bevill State graduates are qualified to seek are automotive technicians, managers, automotive parts sales, service sales, assemblers, and warranty clerks.

Lawson State Community College is a comprehensive, diverse, public, two-year, multi-campus college, dedicated to providing affordable and accessible lifelong learning opportunities to prepare students for employment or career advancement, enable students to transfer to senior colleges and universities, and provide customized training for business and industry.

Mississippi’s oldest institution of higher learning, Mississippi College was established in 1826 as Hampstead Academy. With nearly 4,900 students, the school is the state’s largest private university, and the nation’s second oldest Baptist college. Mississippi College was the first coeducational college in America to grant degrees to women, with two graduating in 1831.

A leader in wireless computing, Stillman College received the

National Innovation in Technology Award from Apple Computers and continues to be on the cusp of technological innovations in higher education. In 2004 the College received its first-ever ranking among top tier schools in U.S. News and World Report and continues to hold this distinction.
