They’ve become a big part ofthe Delta school district’s iden-tity.

Aimed at not only retain-ing students but also attractingout-of-district kids, the numberof academies, and studentsenrolled in them, has stead-ily grown in recentyears, providing agreater variety ofacademic choicesas well as an impor-tant source of rev-enue.

This year, 499students are in adozen academies,a number thatincludes 60 fromout of district.There are also 19international stu-dents enrolled inacademies.

The variety ofsports and fine arts offeringsinclude soccer at South DeltaSecondary in Tsawwassen anddance at Delta Secondary inLadner, to name just a couple.

The first academy was starteda decade ago when the schooldistrict partnered with theVancouver Giants to offer aspir-ing hockey players an opportu-nity to hone their skills. Basedat SDSS, that academy has nowbranched out to include com-

petitive teams that play as theDelta Wild.

The number of out-of-districtstudent athletes the hockeyacademy is attracting was evi-dent during this May’s WesternHockey League Bantam Draft,which saw nine players selected,highlighted by Alberta native TySmith being taken No. 1 overallby the Spokane Chiefs.

The fees vary according to theacademy. A pricey propositionis being part of one of the DeltaWild teams, which can costroughly $12,000 over a 10-monthseason.

An academy with one of thebiggest enrollments is the soccerprogram at SDSS, which has 58students, including two from outof district as well as four fromGermany and one from Spain.

Paige Hansen, the dis-trict’s vice-principal ofacademies, said a lot ofamazing things are hap-pening at Delta’s acad-emies.

Hansen told the schoolboard last week that plansare in the works to createan opera and performanceacademy for the 2016/17school year, a plan thatmust still get approvalfrom trustees.

“When we think of kids,we don’t normally think ofopera, but I can assure you

there is a huge appetite inDelta for theatre, music,musical theatre. Really,opera is North America’s,let’s say, cousin of musicaltheatre,” she said.

“A kid at this age doesn’tnecessarily have to singopera, but they can gothrough the creative pro-cess of engaging in musicand theatre. So it’s a reallyneat opportunity we’redeveloping for them.”

Also in the works areplans to expand the soft-ball academy to DSS anddevelop a sustainable

agriculture academy,which would be basedout of SDSS and woulduse classroom space atthe old Boundary BeachElementary site.

Assistant superinten-dent Doug Sheppardrecently told the Deltacouncil/Delta schoolboard liaison committeethe district is hoping toprovide the municipal-ity with a business plansoon and start discussionsaround what may be avail-able in terms of land.

The district is hoping to

pilot something next falleither at the Southlandsor perhaps on plots at theTsawwassen First Nation.

The Delta school boardhas heavily involved itselfwith academies to makeup for a steady enrollmentdecline, which has hadnegative consequencesfor the district’s operatingbudget. Enrollment, how-ever, is starting to level off,which means additionalrevenues coming fromacademies can be directedto other areas insteadof simply helping offset

losses.Not all the academies

have been as successful,though. The board part-nered with the VancouverWhitecaps a few years agoto create a soccer academyat North Delta Secondary,but that relationship fiz-zled and the program wascancelled.

Bursaries and financialassistance are available forthose wanting to enroll inan academy. The schooldistrict created a websiteto promote its academiesat deltaacademies.ca.

A local man’s effortsto create a breathalyzerto test for marijuana aregetting closer to havingthe device in the hands ofpolice.

Ladner’s Kal Malhi, aretired RCMP officer, hasbeen working on develop-ing a roadside breathalyzersince last year. In August,his company, CannabixTechnologies, signed anagreement with the YostResearch Group at theUniversity of Florida.

The partners havedeveloped a prototype andbegun testing. Malhi saidright now they’re gettingaccurate readings about80 per cent of the timeand the team is working torefine the system to reach100 per cent accuracy.

“Our partnership withthe Yost Research Groupand the University of

Florida immedi-ately diversifiesCannabix’s port-folio of breathtesting technolo-gies for THC,” hesaid after thepartnership wasannounced.

“Our new part-nership boosts ourability to deliver adurable, portablehand-held tool tothe market to helpdetect marijuanaimpaired drivingoffences on ourroads at a timewhen marijuana isbecoming legal inmany jurisdictionsglobally.”

Malhi said he cameup with the idea for theCannabix breathalyzer inlate 2013 while on a familytrip to India.

While waiting at theairport, he came across astudy out of Sweden about

breath testing technologydeveloped at KarolinskaUniversity in Solna. TheSwedish study showedthat breath samples couldbe collected and sent to alab for testing. Malhi tookhis idea and teamed upwith two doctors to try andmake it a reality.

Currently, marijuanause can only be detectedby testing blood, urineor saliva samples. Policehave no way to determineon the road that a driveris under the influence ofthe drug. Any evidence forcharges or a conviction incourt is largely based on

an officer’s observations.“Police officers have

a tough time [provingsomeone was drivinghigh],” Malhi said. “Ourtool would provide thatscientific evidence to go tocourt.”

The Cannabix breatha-lyzer is designed to collecta breath sample, whichis then fed into a anotherpart of the device that teststhe sample and gives animmediate result, similarto breathalyzers offic-ers use to test for alcoholimpairment during road-side checks.

With an increasingnumber of U.S. stateslegalizing marijuanasales, and the new Liberalgovernment’s campaignpromise to do the samehere, Malhi said the tech-nology is more urgentlyneeded to enforce roadsafety and crack down ondrivers impaired by thedrug.

Expect a harder timethan usual finding a park-ing spot in Ladner Villagenext year.

A major utility,streetscape upgrade andbeautification project isscheduled to commencein January on Delta Street.Costing over $6 million,the work will stretch from48th Avenue to ChisholmStreet and include newsidewalks, street lighting,new pavement as well asa watermain replacement.Work is expected to con-tinue into the fall.

The end result will alsosee a decorative pedestri-an plaza at the intersectionof Delta and Bridge streets,decorative stamped/col-oured pedestrian cross-walks at intersections aswell as new bicycle racks,benches, decorative bol-lards, banner poles and

garbage receptacles.“We’ve been in touch

with the business commu-nity and what we’re goingto do is have it done block-by-block,” said munici-pal engineering directorStephen Lan said. “Thatway it will minimize theimpacts of construction formerchants and people canuse the sidewalks againand also park their vehi-cles. The inconveniencewill be a shorter durationfor each block.”

Trees will be replacedas roots are pushing upseveral street panels, asource of concern for themunicipality as peoplehave tripped on them.Drainage problems havealso resulted from unevensidewalks.

Lan said new trees willbe planted with root bar-rier systems.

“We’re kind of con-strained by the root ball,but we are going to try to

find as good a size replace-ment as we can,” he said.

Delta’s engineeringdepartment is inviting thepublic to comment onthe Delta Street RoadwayRevitalization Project andhas a feedback form thatcan be filled out until Dec.15.

The project, along withother upcoming Deltainfrastructure work, will befeatured at a public openhouse from 4 to 8:30 p.m.on Thursday, Dec. 3 at theHarris Barn.

The project is part ofthe much bigger DeltaNeighbourhood RoadImprovements Plan, whichwas introduced in 2012 toaddress aging roads andsidewalks.

Also part of that largerinitiative, and scheduledfor next year, is the firstphase of work on ArthurDrive, from 44th Avenueto Augustine House,which will see streetscape

improvements that includea new sidewalk, betterbike lanes, new pavementand street lights. The nextphase, from AugustineHouse to Deltaport Way,will include pullouts at busstops.

The 4800-block of 48thAvenue will get a new side-walk and other improve-ments in 2017.

Projects already com-pleted include the inter-section of Ladner TrunkRoad and Arthur Driveand the area near 48thAvenue and Garry Street.

Lan said Delta wouldlook at other street androad upgrade oppor-tunities in Ladner andTsawwassen as part ofthe South Delta BusinessSustainability Strategy, amajor initiative aimed athelping Delta’s businesscommunity adapt to lifeonce the Tsawwassen FirstNation mega malls opennext year.

Terry came to us as a trapped feral that has since turned quite friendly. Terry livedoutdoors and was being fed by his finder who was then able to trap him when Terrybit his own tongue and needed medical assistance. He was going to be returned tothe finder’s home after he got all fixed up but he decided that perhaps he’d rather bea friendly inside cat instead! Terry doesn’t seem to mind other cats in the shelter andcan be seen hanging out with other cats in our communal room. We feel Terry woulddo best in a home with no dog but may do well with older children who understandcat body language. Terry likely will be fine as an indoor cat in his new home as longas there’s a bright window for him to stare out and watch the world go by. Can Terryget comfortable in your home?

Ladner is a communitydesigned around automo-bile dependency, but thatcan be changed.

That’s the vision ofuniversity students AlexGaio and Aaron Meier,both Delta Secondarygrads, who came up withthe Ladner CrosstownGreenway Bike RouteConcept. It’s a series ofpotential bike/walk pathsconnecting East Ladnerwith the restof the com-munity.

The paircame up withthe proposalin responseto the FraserHealth,Coastal Healthand UBCMyHealth MyCommunitysurvey thatsuggested astrong correla-tion between health andactive transportation, butfound Delta is a commu-nity that sees lower thanaverage walking, cyclingand transit use, while hav-ing above average car use.

Gaio and Meir say thereis a great opportunity topromote healthier life-styles by providing saferwalking and cycling con-nectivity.

Their concept can beseen on a website theyset up at alex.gaio.me/ctg/ that also includes anonline survey and peti-tion. They were confused

by the lack of transporta-tion choices for studentsand wanted to explorethe option of improvingmobility, so decided togather feedback from resi-dents.

Saying they haven’tmade a presentation tothe Corporation of Delta,Gaio told the Optimistthey’re hoping to eventu-ally get the engineeringdepartment to explore thefeasibility of the potentialroute alignments onceinput from locals has been

gathered.“We put those ideas

out there as a catalyst tostart a conversation,” heexplained.

Gaio said they’d liketo eventually see a planin place that would cre-ate a bike and walk pathconnecting Ladner to anewmulti-use path thatwill be constructed inTsawwassen, a partnershipannounced this summerbetween the TsawwassenFirst Nation and provincialgovernment, as well as theGeorge Massey Tunnelreplacement bridge,

although those discussionswould be further down theroad.

“My primary goal fornow is to help increasetransportation choicein Delta and hopefullyimproving public health asa result,” he added.

Gaio and Meir pitchedtheir idea at a meeting ofthe HUB Cycling SouthDelta Committee, getting,as expected, a positiveresponse.

The committee’s PatrickThompson said the time

couldn’t bebetter to startplanningfor safe bikeroutes thatwould createconnectivitywith most ofSouth Deltato the newbridge. Rightnow, SouthDelta hasa few goodpockets ofroutes but

those dots need to be con-nected, he said.

“It’s one of our prioritiesat Delta HUB and we’rein touch with the MasseyTunnel folks because wesee that as a gate open-ing, essentially, with thebridge. Right now the tun-nel is a major obstacle,” hesaid.

As far as River Road, hesaid it has been improvedand diverting trucks to theSouth Fraser PerimeterRoad has helped, makingit safer for people to cycleto Tilbury, but more isneeded.

As much as it’s a feather in the cap tobe selected to cabinet as a rookie MP, Iwas pleased to hear to Qualtrough saythat serving Delta will always be hermain job. I was even more impressedwhen she backed up those words withactions right away.

Hours after being sworn in as a cabi-net minister, Qualtrough was hit withnews that the installation of communitymailboxes in Ladner would proceeddespite her party’s desire for a mora-torium and Canada Post’s announce-ment it was putting the brakes on theprogram.

Because the Canada Post announce-ment only applied to installations forNovember and beyond, and becauseLadner’s conversion was scheduledto take place in mid-October, she wastold, as we were, that it would be goingahead, even though it was alreadyNovember and no boxes had beeninstalled yet.

Qualtrough didn’t buy the bizarrelogic and was already escalating herresponse to the issue when word camedown that Ladner would indeed beincluded in the moratorium and retainits home delivery, at least for the timebeing.

I spoke with her from Ottawa as shewas busy returning calls late one nightand during that conversation I jokedwith her that it could go south in ahurry if an MP didn’t look after thingson the home front. The rest of Canadamay want a piece of you, but it’s thepeople of Delta that ultimately deter-mine whether you remain in office. Sheassured me she’s acutely aware of thatsituation.

Eyesontheprize

We’ve all experi-enced the elec-tion process,some first handas candidates,

others in supporting roles asoffice staff, sign makers, strate-gists, et al. Like most community-minded folks on election day, wedutifully attend a polling stationand cast a ballot for our favouritecandidate(s).

This latter process is a brief butnecessary ritual. I’m one of thosewho believe voters should attenda public facility to register theirchoice of candidate under pub-lic watch. Mobile polls addresssenior and disability issues, thusfacilitating voting opportunity.

During last month’s federalelection, Maureen and I offeredour services as scrutineers. Ifound the experience fascinatingand time well spent. Voter turn-out has steadily dropped since theSecondWorld War for all levels ofgovernment.

Curious about the day ahead,I drove around to various poll-ing stations at 7 a.m. and notedheavy car and pedestrian traffic.It appeared voter interest was upas supported by the advancedpolls. Was change in the air or theincrease a product of a close elec-tion and well organized campaignactivity?

I attended HawthorneElementary and relieved the

morning shift, spending the restof the day observing/scrutineer-ing voter activity and the meticu-lous hand count of ballots anddocumentation of results.

Scrutineers are volunteersrepresenting party and candidateinterest that help validate theintegrity of the voting process.One could expect there mightbe awkwardness between partyrepresentatives. Not so. I foundall scrutineers responsible andconscientious in their duties yetaffable and approachable.

Together we could observe theebb and flow of voter activity. Theodd hold up or registration errorwas handled promptly and cour-teously by paid supervisory staff.Voting activity remained heavyand constant. There was a pre-vailing sense of purpose in thosepeople waiting patiently to casttheir ballot. The reason would

soon become self-evident.I didn’t get a sense there was

a dramatic increase in the youngvoter turnout but statistical analy-sis might prove otherwise.

Inside the polling station theparty representatives were opti-mistic about their candidates’success, perhaps less so about thenational scene. The Eastern timezone was a bit of a distractionas we neared our 7 p.m. closinghour. The last couple cast theirballots to a standing ovation asthey exited the premises.

The ballot boxes were openedunder scrutiny and the count gotunderway. There were 10 boxes tobe counted of some 4,000 ballots.Within minutes the local trendwas clear.

Unbeknownst to many insidethe polling station, CBC wasdeclaring a Liberal governmentbefore B.C. polls closed. Beforeour count was posted, concessionspeeches locally and nationallyhad occurred.

Provincial closing times requirebetter co-ordination to ensurepotential voters are not influ-enced by other jurisdictions.

A good day to observe partici-patory democracy at work andwitness a civil exchange in federalgovernance.

How sad to read aboutAnn Claggett’s passing.

Our experience withAnn’s leadership wasthrough her dutiesas founding chair ofElderCollege Delta begin-ning 12 years ago.

Through Ann’s doggeddetermination, we wereable to have local venuesoffered at no charge andall our presenters, mostlyretired educators, werecoaxed to offer their ser-vices at no charge in order

for seniors to enjoy learn-ing without having to takeexaminations or travel out-side of their own commu-nity. She was adamant thatwe could provide a solidprogram with donatedtime and space.

ElderCollege Delta isthe only third age learningorganization not attachedto a post-secondaryinstitution in the LowerMainland; consequentlyvolunteers do the mailouts, registration, recruit-ing of presenters and othercomponents without theassistance common to

other senior educationalorganizations. All instruc-tors and presenters givefreely of their time.

The selection of pro-gramming has widenedsince the years of Ann’sinvolvement and we havebeen able to take advan-tage of venues donated ina variety of locations local-ly, providing easy accessby public transit, foot orby car.

Our celebrated choirwas one of Ann’s innova-tions as a publicity armand the ElderCollegeSingers continue to pro-

vide much pleasure toseniors.

All this was put intoaction with a team of vol-unteers under Ann’s boldleadership.

Many years laterElderCollege Delta is alearning community witha current membership of350 students over the ageof 50.

We see ElderCollegeDelta as a legacy createdby Ann Claggett that con-tinues to grow in size andexcellence.

The port’s new ad fea-turing the cruise shipfacility at Canada Place isvery misleading. It is truethey have installed shorepower at Canada Place butfail to mention that onlyabout 30 per cent of visit-ing cruise ships have shorepower capability. Those

ships that do are oftenbrought in on the wrongside of the dock, whichdefeats the electrical hookup for shore power.

The rest of the cruiseship industry uses differ-ent technology to addressair and noise pollutionand has no plans to installshore power infrastructurenow or in the future.

The story gets evenworse when we discoverthat neither the port norTransport Canada have setdown regulations, time-

lines and/or deadlines forshore power complianceat Canada Place.

In Delta, the Deltaportcontainer terminal recent-ly announced a shorepower project for one ofits three berths. This airand noise pollution pre-vention expenditure wasannounced about three orfour months ago. Again wesee no regulations, time-line or deadlines for com-pliance at Deltaport.

It is clear that PortMetro Vancouver has

spent a large sum atCanada Place andDeltaport for shore powercapability without anycompliance deadlines. Itcontinues to appear theport is happy to subjectthe citizens of Delta andGreater Vancouver to amajor source of air andnoise pollution now andwell into the future.

Does anyone trulybelieve that Port MetroVancouver is improvingour quality of life?

Government has eitherfailed to disclose, or —perhaps worse — to keep,

subject to an FOI is on itswebsite. The result was anuproar in the legislatureyielding unfortunate col-umns and letters in boththe Vancouver Sun and theDelta Optimist.

This should have beenavoided by the minis-try posting a summaryproject schedule on itswebsite. Those interestedcould have learned what

work has been completedand posted, and whenremaining tasks will becompleted and the resultseither posted or availableby FOI.

Surely there must besuch a schedule. The 2017start of construction hasfor months been adver-tised alongside Highway17.

In 1988, there were350,000 cases of polio inover 125 countries around

the world; in 2015,there were 37 casesin only two coun-tries.

The last timethe world saw theelimination of adisease like poliowas the eradicationof small pox duringa worldwide cam-paign from 1966 to1980.

Every child in theworld needs to bevaccinated to effec-tively kill the virusso it never appearsagain. Rotary and theWorld Health Organizationare so close to achievingthis goal that the Bill andMelinda Gates Foundationis offering to match everydollar raised by Rotarianswith two extra dollars andthe Canadian governmentis also matching two-to-one.

Tsawwassen Rotariansrecently donated over$8,700 to the cause,which turns into $43,500with matching dona-tions, according to JohnCharbonneau, founda-tion director of the RotaryClub of Tsawwassen. That

means over 51,000 chil-dren will receive the vac-cine.

“Our club is so wellknown for our local workin the community, butthat is only a part of thestory,” said club presidentShane Todhunter. “Rotarymakes an impact world-wide coming together totackle ambitious goals likethe eradication of polio. Iwas astounded by the sup-port our members showedrecently for this truly nota-ble cause.”

Held Oct. 25at the guild’s Gallery 1710in Tsawwassen, the eventdrewmore than 150 peo-ple to remember Elliot andthen be astounded by theabundance and variety ofher award-winning work,which completely filledthe guild’s studio/work-shop.

More than 40 largeframed watercolours —landscapes, sailing shipsand portraits among them— filled the wall hang-ing space. Easels held anassortment of canvasesand scores of drawingsand sketches done duringthe guild’s life-drawingsessions, which Elliot

loved attending, coveredmany tables.

All were available for adonation to Delta Hospice,and as a result many peo-ple now have both a visibleand cherished memory ofa much-admired artist andthe knowledge they have

also helped thoseneeding specialcare, which was theaim of Elliot’s fam-ily in arranging theevent.

Her daughtersand sister areimmensely grate-ful for all the help

received in making thecelebration a resoundingsuccess. While there wassadness as friends sharedtheir loss, there was alsolaughter at happy memo-ries and the pleasure ofseeing her two younggranddaughters, taught artby their grandmother andfor whom her forthcomingbook Native in Eskdale:Another Countrywas writ-ten, viewing her paintingswith other children learn-ing about art.

About 130 peoplewere spellbound byPeter Johnson’s descrip-tions of the poor condi-tions women faced onbride-ships during anElderCollege Delta pres-entation last Saturday inLadner.

The author of Voyagesof Hope: The Saga of theBride-Ships, Johnson toldthe crowd at Cedar ParkChurch about the plightof young women beingsent from the U.K. underthe auspices of religiousorganizations.

He detailed the fright-ening circumstances ofyoung females landing byship after three monthson the high seas with nowashing facilities, thenbeing herded throughtroughs of showering stallssurrounded by men gawk-ing at them in their naked-ness.

The second portionof Johnson’s programwas lighter content withElderCollege members

and guests playing rolesof the prospective bridesand miners who did or didnot join forces to establishB.C.’s population.

There was much laugh-ter and astonishment asseveral persons, follow-ing a script provided byJohnson, told of theirexperiences upon landing.

A last-minute addi-tion to the program wasthe inclusion of IvanSayer, past curator or theVancouver Museum, whoshared some of his privatecollection items pertainingto the bride-ships. Sayerhas the largest collectionof period costumes from1700 in Canada.

The purpose of the pesticide use is to eradicate invasive intertidal cordgrasses (Spartina spp.)which are designated as provincial noxious weeds under B.C.’s Weed Control Act. Treatmentareas will be restricted to infestations of Spartina on cobble beaches, salt marshes and intertidalmudflats (at low tide) located in Boundary Bay, Robert’s Bank and Burrard Inlet, but treatmentmay expand over the course of the permit period to include sites at Sturgeon Banks and on thecentral east coast of Vancouver Island, including Comox, Courtenay, Deep Bay, Denman Island,Hornby Island and Sea Island.

The total area proposed for this herbicide treatment is a maximum of 22 hectares annually,spread across more than 17,000 coastal hectares. Pesticide applications will consist only of theherbicide called Habitat (active ingredient: imazapyr), which will be applied to selected siteswithin the areas identified above using handheld spray bottles, backpack sprayers or mountedsprayers. Pesticide applications will complement existing and ongoing mechanical removalmethods.

Proposed duration of this pesticide use is from June 1, 2016 to May 31, 2019.

Artists in the VillageSociety members will geta chance to let their workshine tomorrow at a showand sale in Ladner.

SHINE will feature art-work from about 25 mem-bers of the local group.

That will include paint-

ings, encaustic pieces,photography, pottery andwoodwork, says Artistsin the Village co-founderand vice-president MeganMacDonald.

Artists like VictoriaHeryet, Gary Fox, LindaJones and photographerSharon Wright will besome of those with work inthe show, she says.

There will be “a real nicevariety of different work,in different sizes as well,”she says.

About half of the art-ists plan to be in attend-ance at the show, saysMacDonald.

“That’s one of the thingswe wanted to work on, ishaving the artists beingable to connect with the

people in the community,so they can talk about theirwork and people can getto know and understand itbetter, and get a nice con-nection with it as well.”

MacDonald and ShirleyMaurice, the group’s vol-unteer coordinator andsecretary, will both havesome encaustic pieces atthe show. Maurice will

also display some of herjewelry.

Ladner’s Dani-RoseCoates is having fun play-ing a “bad guy” role in Exit22 Productions’ rendi-tion of Treasure Island atCapilano University.

Her character, LizKilligrew, is a femalepirate who takes and doeswhat she wants, Coatesexplains.

“She’s one of the badguys. She’s not a good guyat all.”

It’s a role that Coates isenjoying.

“I think it’s completelythe opposite of my per-sonality. It’s a lot of fun.It’s tapping into a differentside of myself that I’m notusually used to exploringand I’m really enjoying it.”

The production ofRobert Louis Stevenson’sclassic, directed by DesPrice, includes a femaleJim Hawkins, a bevy offemale pirates, swordfights galore, treacheryand treasure, according toa press release.

Coates, who’s in the

musical theatre program atCapilano, says her danceexperience is really benefi-cial for the fight choreog-raphy required for her rolein the play.

The Delta Secondarygrad, who was involved intheatre in high school, saysshe has supportive family,friends and teachers whoencouraged her to take theprogram at Capilano. Sheplans on pursuing theatreafter university.

Two South Delta writ-ers were among the 36students featured in TheWriter’s Studio annualanthology, emerge 15,launched last month atSFU’s Harbour Centrecampus.

Heather Marshall andValerie White contributedto the anthology fromSimon Fraser University’sprestigious creative writingprogram.

White, writing inemerge 15 as ValerieChalker Whitfield, haslived on a float home inCanoe Pass Village for 26years. She has previouslypublished works on traveland medicine, but this isher first foray into creativenon-fiction.

Her contribution toemerge 15 is an excerptfrom a three-generationfamily saga spanningthree continents, a projectwhose grandeur has beendescribed as “overwhelm-ing.”

But, as White says, “you

never really know whatsomething is about untilyou do it!”

Marshall is currently

working on a creative non-fiction book, a series oflinked short stories and anovel.

“I grew up in Ladner,when it was on the vergeof suburbia, in an areawe called Chung ChuckHeights,” says Marshall.“The Heights will alwaysbe with me, in my emo-tions, thoughts and deci-sions. It is always at mycore.”

emerge 15 is guest-edited by author andpoet Matt Rader, whodescribes the content as“the re-inhabited lives ofour neighbours — funny,wicked, queer, unpredict-able, vatic, curious, trou-bled, warm.” Rader invitesreaders into the anthology:“They have thrown openthe doors for you to haveyour own look around.”

November is NationalNovel Writing Monthand South Delta librariesare hosting a number ofevents for budding novel-ists.

National Novel WritingMonth, which is alsoknown as NaNoWriMo,aims to help and inspirewriters to write 50,000words during the month,which is 1,666 words aday over 30 days.

Participants are alsoencouraged to sign upat www.nanowrimo.orgwhere they can plan theirnovel, join a local groupof writers, receive onlineencouragement from staffand published authorsand have access to aworld-wide communityof writers.

NaNoWriMo startedin San Francisco in 1999when a small group ofnon-writers challengedthemselves to write anovel in 30 days, decid-ing that 50,000 words wasthe minimum size for anovel. Over the years it

has become a worldwidephenomenon and hadmore than 300,000 par-ticipants last year.

Environmental Assessment of the ProposedWesPac Tilbury Marine Jetty Project

Open House and Invitation to Comment

WesPac Midstream—Vancouver LLC (Proponent) is proposing toconstruct a marine jetty for berthing and transferring liquefiednatural gas (LNG) to marine barges and carriers at Tilbury Islandin Delta, BC, on the Fraser River. WesPac Tilbury Marine JettyProject (proposed Project) comprises the removal of existingabandoned marine infrastructure, the construction of a marinejetty (access trestle, loading platform, and mooring dolphins), theconstruction of LNG infrastructure to receive processed LNG fortransfer to marine vessels and safety and process controlsystems.

The proposed Project is subject to review under BritishColumbia’s Environmental Assessment Act (2002) and theCanadian Environmental Assessment Act (2012). BC’sEnvironmental Assessment process is substituted for the federalprocess, meeting both federal and provincial requirements forenvironmental assessment. Provincial and Federal ministers willeach make their own decision on whether or not to approve theproject. The Proponent must obtain an environmental assessmentcertificate before any work can be undertaken on the proposedProject. However, prior to submission of an application(Application) for an environmental assessment certificate by theProponent, the Environmental Assessment Office ofBritish Columbia (EAO) must first approve the ApplicationInformation Requirements.

Key to the Application Information Requirements is theidentification of Valued Components to be studied and the areaswithin which the studies would occur. The selected ValuedComponents are presented in the draft Valued Componentsdocument which the Proponent has prepared and EAO invitesthe public to submit comments on.

Well, I think I need tostart at the beginning andexplain the basics aboutprotein and then buildfrom there.

Protein is found in everycell, muscle, tissue andorgan in our body. Thebody needs protein forgrowth (as in muscles),maintenance and repair ofour cells, metabolism (asin an increased one) anddigestion.

Protein also helps to

Protein is actuallychains of other moleculescalled amino acids.

There are 22 aminoacids in total in thebody. Thirteen of themnon-essential, meaningour bodies are capable ofmaking these little guyson their own, and ninethat are deemed essentialbecause we need to ingestthese aminos through thefoods we eat.

When we eat the rightfoods, these nine aminoacids will get reassembledto form the different typesof protein that our bodyneeds. (www.about.com/what-is-protein).

What foods containthese nine essential aminoacids? Meat, fish, poultry,eggs, milk, cheese, yogurt

and soybeans provide allnine amino acids and aretherefore called “completeproteins.”

Plant sources, such aslegumes, nuts, seeds, grainproducts and many veg-etables, have some, butnot all, of the nine aminoacids, and are so termed“incom-pleteproteins.”Whencom-bined,though, itis possi-ble to getall ninewithouthaving toeat anyanimalproducts (great news forall you vegetarians outthere).

A diet high in protein isa very successful weightloss technique, and atried and true method forfitness-enthusiasts lookingto maintain a lean bodyweight and a high musclemass.

In a study publishedin Nutrition Metabolism,

dieters that increasedtheir protein intake to30 per cent of their dailydiet ate nearly 450 fewercalories a day and lostabout 11 pounds over the12-week study — and thatwas without employingany other dietary meas-ures. (www.msnbc.msn.

The Pacers have reached theprovincial AAA championships 13of the last 15 years and the Ladnerschool’s success goes back evenfurther when Delta Sports Hall ofFame inductee Barb Salt took onthe program in 1992. She eventu-ally passed on the reins to ShellThompson who continued themomentum.

and a group that has played a lottogether. We are definitely one ofthose teams that is not about indi-vidual parts but the sum of partsthat makes us better. If we cankeep developing the team gameand fire on all cylinders, I think wecan be really dangerous.”

“It’s been so much fun havingthe opportunities to work withpro and Olympic athletes and it’sneat to be to have this right hereat home.”

Wolsey’s clinic, which officially

opened last week, is also anideal fit for the golfing experi-ence that is near completion atTsawwassen Springs.

A covered driving range with aseparate teaching area is now inoperation. The impressive club-house across the street includesa pro shop, gym, Pat Quinn’sRestaurant and Bar and a stu-dio that is the new home of the

Tsawwassen Wellness Centre —Pilates and Health.

Head professional Chris Hoodsays Wolsey’s services and exper-tise reflects the needs of today’sgolfer — at the competitive andrecreational levels.

“Travis is Titleist PerformanceInstitute (TPI) certified. It’sbasically fitness performanceand how it all ties into golf,”

explained Hood.“I went through TPI and it

took about 90 minutes to do allmy (body) measurements. A guywho had never seen my swingor even me pick up a golf clubbefore nailed the problems ofmy swing. It’s based on improv-ing your stretching and range ofmotion and that’s where Travisfits in.

“The clinic is also great forsomeone needing rehab workor coming off surgery that mayneed some help to get goingagain or modify his swing.

“No where else are you goingto find a one stop shop like this.Lots of places have teachingbut you are sending them offto another place for physio ora gym workout. And with PatQuinn’s (opening soon) thereis the social side of golf that istaken care of too.”

Wolsey added his businessis as much about body mainte-nance these days as it is is reha-bilitation.

“It has just exploded and whatI see a lot of is injury prevention,”he said. “There was an epidemicof ACL tears with young athletesbut now we can do a lot to pre-vent those things. That’s why yousee so much strength and condi-tioning today. Physio and sportsmedicine plays a big role in that.”

Pat was born and raised inVictoria, BC and passedaway peacefully at IreneThomas Hospice, with herfamily by her side, after abrief but courageous battlewith cancer.

She is survived by her loving husband of 48 yearsKen, children Chris (Miranda) and Elena (Gord),grandson Owen, brother-in-law Tony (Faith) andmany dear friends.

Pat was a long time Delta resident and worked forThe Bay, Richmond for 35 years and was a proudmember of the Richmond Chapter of the CanadianFederation of University Women (CFUW).

We thank Dr D V Kason, as well as the other doctorsand health care staff involved for their compassionatecare and support.

A Celebration of Pat’s Life will take place on Saturday,November 21, 2015 at 1:00 pm at Delta FuneralHome Reception Centre, 5329 Ladner Trunk Road,Ladner, BC.
