WHY PEAK ACADEMY?

• City Leaders have been asking…

o What tools and training are available to support our colleagues as they go through Peak Performance?

• “Investing in Ourselves”

o The Mayor’s Office & City leaders have created the Peak Academy to train colleagues in the principles of Lean

o Tools and training to enable us to achieve performance improvements through Peak Performance

o Training will be offered through the Business Process Improvement team

o Engaging other agencies and outside consultants who donate their time to provide training and support

o Certifications that carry into your career at the City

WHAT IS THE PEAK ACADEMY?Denver Green BeltsIntroduction to Lean

Peak PerformersFellowships | Facilitating Lean

Who All EmployeesUsually a training set up by a manager or supervisor.

All EmployeesRecommended by Manager and Selected by Peak Academy

All EmployeesRecommended by Manager and Selected by Peak Academy

Duration Acquired through either:• 4-hour training about Lean & perform

a just-do-it (JDI) or a 6-S at your work

• Participation in a Rapid Improvement Event (RIE)

5 day intensive, hands-on training exposing Denver colleagues to:• Process Improvement “101”• Tools to ID waste• Ways to eliminate waste• How to prioritize ideas within Peak

Performance framework Citywide & within their agency

3 Months of Fellowship• Includes Black Belt training &

certification followed by facilitating RIEs in other agencies.

Remaining 9 Months of Fellowship• Work ½-time as a Fellow setting up

Peak Improvement structure within their home agency. Ongoing Peak support for Mayor’s Office as approved by manager

What Training includes: Peak Performance overview, tools to ID waste in a process, 6S, Just-Do-It, tools to make changes and track

5 day intensive, hands-on training. Modules include: Gemba walk, tools to ID/remove process waste, case studies about Lean, how to analyze data, and facilitation best-practices

• 5 Day Black Belt Training• Tools/Methodology/Hands-on• Process Improvement Facilitation –

Using the See It/Do It/Train it model

What’s Expected after?

• Document 2-to-3 improvement ideas and submit them to the Peak Academy

• Perform either:• Perform & document a JDI

or…• Perform a 6-S at y our work

• Document 3-to-4 ideas annually including ties to strategic plan, scope of initiative and improvements that will result

• Deliver 2-to-3 ideas as approved by the agency/dept manager.

Special Type of Black Belt

• Do I need to be a Green Belt before I can be a Black Belt?

o NO. But the preference is that a person attend a green belt class and complete one innovation prior to applying to black belt.

• Do I need to be a to be a Black Belt before I can be a Peak Performer?

o NO. Peak Performers are Black Belts but go on to learn facilitation skills, put them into practice in another agency, and put those skills to use back in their home agency.

PEAK ACADEMY: NEXT STEPS AFTER GRADUATION

PEP Updates for 2014• We will work with you and your supervisor to update your 2014 PEP

with the following outcome titled “Black Belt Innovation”

Submit Ideas for Innovation to the Peak Academy (first 3 Boxes of the A3)

Review ideas with Peak Academy and your management team (Supervisor, Manager(s), and Agency Exec)

• Required for buy-in and the plan for implementation• Present in A3 format• Tie to your Agency/Dept’s strategic plan!

Deliver/Implement the ideas & submit completed A3 to Peak Academy with a CC-to your supervisor

PEAK ACADEMY: UPDATING YOUR 2014 PEP

• Initial Steps (within 1 month after Black Belt training)o We will email your supervisor with language for 2014 PEPo We will ask your supervisor to confirm by email that:

They have updated your 2014 PEP to include the requirements for submitting and implementing innovation ideas

% weight of Innovation Outcome determined by you and your supervisor (or manager). Peak Academy will not dictate a %-weight requirement

• Jan – July 2014 Cohortso 2 ideas implemented (completed A3) = “Meets Expectations”o 3 ideas implemented (completed A3) = “Exceeds Expectations”o 4 ideas implemented (completed A3) = “Outstanding”

• Aug – Oct 2014 Cohortso 1 idea implemented (completed A3) = “Meets Expectations”o 2 ideas implemented (completed A3) = “Exceeds Expectations”o 3 ideas implemented (completed A3) = “Outstanding”

• Nov – Dec 2014 Cohortso No 2014 expectation. Will work to update 2015 PEP

PEAK ACADEMY: CONNECTING WITH YOUR COHORT

• Black Belt Buddies

o Please pick a “buddy” from your cohort. Your buddy should be someone who is NOT in your department that you DID NOT know before the cohort began. This is someone you can go to for:

o support, o to bounce ideas off of and o someone you should encourage to innovate

o Please be sure you have your buddy’s contact information and set a time to meet with them for coffee or lunch to discuss your innovations.
