International Symposium on “Trends in Solar Cell Research”

An International Symposium on “Trends in Solar Cell Research” was organized by

the Department of Physics & Chemistry (PG) and sponsored by Indian Science Congress

Association (ISCA), Coimbatore Chapter on 3rd October 2018. Total number of 509

participants (206 participants from various colleges in and around Coimbatore, Pollachi,

Gobichettipalayam, Udumalpet and 303 participants from our college) participated in the

symposium to understand how to utilize solar energy to solve the energy crisis.

In the inaugural function Dr. M. Dhanam, Associate Professor and Head, Department

of Physics, KASC, welcomed the chief guests, participants and faculty members. She

introduced the programme and highlighted the importance of the symposium. Dr. V.

Balasubramaniam, Principal, KASC felicitated the gathering. He revealed about renewable

and non-renewable energy sources. The program was then followed by Dr. V. Chinnusamy,

Chief Executive Officer, KASC who spoke about the energy crisis and Dr. S. Paulsamy,

Dean, Academic and Research & Development, KASC gave an idea on the current trends in

Solar Cells. Dr. N. Muthukumarasamy, Professor and Head, Department of Physics,

Coimbatore Institute of Technology, Coimbatore delivered the keynote address. He pointed

out existing solar parks and the current solar power generation in particular.

The first technical session was handled by Dr. N. Muthukumarasamy and he delivered

a talk on “Dye Sensitized and Perovskite Solar Cells”. He made a comprehensive

presentation on the dye sensitized solar cells which is the third generation photovoltaic cell

and it is based on semiconductor formed between the photosensitized anode and an

electrolyte. The perovskite solar cell having a peculiar structure, which is a hybrid organic-

inorganic lead or tin is discussed. Dye Sensitized and perovskite solar cells are cheaper to

produce and simpler to fabricate.

The second technical session was handled by Dr. Govindarajan Saranya, Beijing

Computational Science and Research Centre, Beijing, China, who gave a theoretical way of

optimizing and stabilizing Quantum Dot Sensitized Solar Cells (QDSSC). She emphasized

about next generation solar cell having facile, low cost fabrication techniques and

recommended that QDSSC has great potential to meet global demands for green energy

where these Quantum Dots enacts as an absorbing material and this property makes Quantum

Dots attractive for multi junction solar cells.

The third technical session was handled by Dr. R. Balasundaraprabhu, Assistant

Professor, Department of Physics, PSG College of Technology, Coimbatore on the topic

“TCO for Solar Cells”, TCO thin film is optically transparent and electrically conductive

material which serves as a basic component in touch screen, LCD, OLED and a strong point

on installing roof top solar panels to generate solar energy and their commercial use in many

industries are discussed.

The fourth technical session was handled by Dr. S. Prasanna, Associate Professor,

Department of Physics, PSG College of Technology, Coimbatore. In the address he gave an

overview on thin film solar cells which belong to second generation. He came up with the

statistical data on solar energy and talked about the research undertaken in PSG College of

Technology. He highlighted the rays of hope on the future of solar energy.

Each session was ended with an open discussion forum for the participants.

Participants were asked to record their feedbacks on the symposium and the certificates were

distributed. Vote of thanks was proposed by Dr. K. Kalpanadevi, Assistant Professor and

Head, Department of Chemistry (PG), KASC. The international symposium was ended with

the National Anthem.
