Year 9 have learnt several different joinery techniques to construct their pendulum clocks. The students added excellent pyrography designs to their clocks to improve the aesthetics of the project. Year 9 are now working on constructing their shelving unit and all the students are coming up with their own unique designs. The students are demonstrating good skills using the tools, materials and equipment used in Timber Technology. Year 10 are working well on their bedside table designs. Some students have worked really hard and almost completed their projects. This dedication to practical work will allow them to construct their own project for the rest of the year. Year 10 have learnt many new skills in furniture construction including joinery techniques, drawer construction and design modifications. Well done to the students that are striving to achieve their best. Year 11 came up with their own project of a storage cabinet that can house fishing equipment. The students designed their own cupboards and they have had to work on completing drawings and manufacturing a project from these drawings. They have added features such as drawers and compartments which required them to use different construction techniques. These skills will give them an idea of what is required while designing a major project for the Higher School Certificate. Year 12 are currently working very hard on completing their major projects and folios. The students will be submitting these in Week 4, Term 3. I wish them all good luck in completing their assessments, major projects and trial examinations next term. Stephen McCrorey Industrial Arts Teacher Principal’s Report Welcome back to Term 3. This is a very important term in the school calendar and also busy for staff and students. Year 10 and 8 students will be making subject choices for next year, and we will visit, and be visited by, our Year 6 students starting high school next year. Year 12 will be finalising their HSC courses and sitting their trial examinations, as well as completing major projects and performances. It is really important that this term is used wisely by Year 12, as this is when the risk of stress and uncertainty can get in the way of progress, in addition to work and social commitments. It is also the time when students can feel overwhelmed and find it difficult to cope, so we must keep our eye on their wellbeing and seek support if needed. This term we are focusing on our teaching programs with staff reflecting on areas for improvement as well as supporting individual student needs. This is an important process that takes place regularly in schools to ensure best practice and continuous improvement. Staff started the term at professional development sessions on Monday. The majority of staff were in Yass and worked with teachers from other schools in a variety of areas. Staff professional development is a very important part of staff staying current with educational practice to support student outcomes. My apologies about the Year 7–10 reports taking a little longer than usual to come out. As the new Principal, I have taken a little extra time reading over them to get a good grounding as to how each student is performing. Reports will be handed to students to take home this week and discussions about the reports can take place during parent-teacher interviews next week on Wednesday 1st of August. A huge thank you to the RFS for supporting our students with training and activities over the past semester. Norm, Tracey and Simon have kept the students busy and well trained to support their community. Congratulations to these participating students for the commitment and enthusiasm they have shown throughout the course.
