Story and Photos by Pat KrauseThe 4th Annual Beamer

Awards Gala was held at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Rancho Mirage on January 30th. This fundraiser praised the Betty Ford Center Children’s Program. The Hazelton Betty Ford Foundation presented its “Beamer Lights Up Gala”.

Several hundred people gathered in the area for a cocktail reception prior to a sit down dinner and entertainment by none other than comedian “Howie Mandel”. Mandel, a judge on Americas Got Talent TV show is amazingly funny.

Patrick Evans was Emcee again this year and he introduced a video showing a huge supporter of the Betty Ford Foundation, Lois Horvitz, who passed away last year and was the creator of Beamer, the Children’s Programs and their Website. Lois was a major loss and the video showed her holding her brainchild, Beamer. The Beamer is instrumental in helping children with their feelings whose lives are in turmoil because of addiction

in their families. The Beamer is a light bulb character that changes color for each emotion children feel. The programs help children get their lives back on track with the support they need and no family is turned away because of financial difficulties.

The Honoree of the night was Susan Ford Bales, Betty Ford’s daughter. When First Lady Betty Ford passed away, it was up to Susan to take over for her mother. Susan took over the torch and the center never skipped a

beat in its programs. Susan was deeply grateful for this award and was sure her Mother was looking down was so pleased. Susan said that her mother’s time after the White House was the most remarkable legacy. Bettys love for children brought hope to hundreds of families living with addiction.

The ultimate entertainer, Howie Mandel, had the audience laughing out loud during most of his performance. He used his Germaphobic disease in such

an amusing tale that it was just “more than funny”. Mandel said he never carries money and couldn’t find a quarter when he needed one. Then he went into doctor’s visits where he talked about the prostate exam and what they were looking for. Mandel asked a doctor in the audience what they were looking for and the doctor said a quarter, which again brought a round of laughter and applause. Mandel

then went to women and their wardrobe and how they differ from men. His finale was a video where he became an employee at a hair salon and he washed peoples hair that again brought out loud laughter from the guests. After the video Howie became serious when he said he was proud to be a part of the night and the Center did amazing work with families and addiction.

Mccallum Theatre Presents Gordon LightfootBy Desert Star Staff

Through the generosity of Jerry and Sarah Mathews, the McCallum Theatre presents Gordon Lightfoot in “50 Years of the Carefree Highway Tour” on Tuesday, March 1, at 8:00pm.

After 50 active years of hit songs and international album sales well into the multi-millions, it is safe to say that esteemed singer-songwriter and musician Gordon Lightfoot resides with some very exclusive company atop the list of all-time greats. His song catalog is incredibly vast and includes such immortals as “Early Morning Rain,” If You Could Read My Mind,” “Carefree Highway,” “Sundown,” “(That’s What You Get) for Lovin’ Me,” “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald,” “Cold on the Shoulder,” Canadian Railroad

Trilogy,” “Ribbon of Darkness,” “Beautiful,” “Song for a Winter’s Night,” “Shadows,” “Rainy Day People,” “Did She Mention My Name” and “Summertime Dream,” to name just a few.

“Gordon Lightfoot - 50 Years on the Carefree Highway Tour” will feature his well-known hits as well as album cuts for the die-hard fans. All of which are woven together with Lightfoot’s behind-the-scenes stories and personal anecdotes about his historic career.

Gordon Lightfoot has recorded 20 albums and has five Grammy nominations. His songs have aired regularly for 50 years, earning him radio singles chart positions in North America achieved by few others. Gordon’s radio hits in the U.S. have earned five #1 hits, five Top 10 hits and

thirteen Top 40 hits. In Canada, he has earned sixteen #1 hits, eighteen Top 10 hits and 21 Top 40 hits.

Aside from his success in writing, singing and performing his own music, Gordon’s songs have been recorded and performed by some of the greatest of all time including: Bob Dylan, Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, Jr., Marty Robbins, Jerry Lee Lewis, Judy Collins, Eric Clapton, Johnny Mathis, Anne Murray, Olivia Newton-John, Sarah McLachlan, Barbra Streisand, Peter Paul & Mary, Harry Belafonte, Jane’s Addiction, Richie Havens, Glen Campbell, Toby Keith, Alison Krauss and George Hamilton IV.

In 2012, Lightfoot’s legacy was further enhanced when he was inducted into the

Songwriters Hall Of Fame. He was honored for his role in defining the folk-pop sound of the 1960s and ‘70s. There are fewer than 400 inductees who make up the impressive roster enshrined in the Songwriters Hall of Fame including: Burt Bacharach, John Fogerty, Bob Dylan, Carole King, Paul Simon, Billy Joel, Elton John, Brian Wilson, James Taylor, James Brown, Bruce Springsteen, Jim Croce, Phil Collins, Loretta Lynn, Van Morrison, Kris Kristofferson, Dolly Parton, Diane Warren, Garth Brooks, and Leonard Cohen.

In his native Canada, Lightfoot has been decorated with the highest honors bestowed to a civilian including the Governor’s General Award and the Companion to the Order of Canada Honor of

Merit. He has also won 17 Juno Awards, Canada’s equivalent to the Grammy Awards. Lightfoot is a member of Canada’s Walk of Fame and The Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame. In 2007, Canada Post honored him by issuing an official Gordon Lightfoot postage stamp. He is also in the Canadian Music Hall of Fame and the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame. Gordon Lightfoot is an indelible part of the Canadian national spirit and regarded as perhaps the most prolific and greatest Canadian singer-songwriter of all time.

Through the generosity of Jerry and Sarah Mathews, the McCallum Theatre presents Gordon Lightfoot in “50 Years of the Carefree Highway Tour” on Tuesday, March 1, at 8:00pm.

PGA Tour spoke about the strides the PGA tour has made on health and the money the tour has raised for programs for healthy living. One panelist spoke about how there is so little chance for those in proverty level situations to get fruits and vegetables, key to health. Others spoke about how some had to travel a long distance to receive health care in remote areas and the Indian reservations.

Health is a global issue and needs to be addressed and solutions found. These summits are so healthful to local communities to show what a city or state can do to create healthy living and promote better practices by the people in their cities. Technology is the new normal to find cures for cancer, heart disease, Alzheimer’s and so many other diseases. Changes in diets help stop diabetes in all ages thru education of foods and obesity. The need and responsibility to help make changes in life styles is thru our leaders in health care.

By Pamela PriceThe official opening of

Asian Artists in Crystal: Steuben Glass at Sunnylands Center & Gardens in Rancho Mirage, CA on January 28th revealed the epitome of cultural diplomacy. The exhibit, comprised of 36 glass objects created by Steuben and engraved with intricate designs submitted by artists from 16 countries, was purchased by Walter and Leonore Annenberg in 1971 for their Rancho Mirage residence. Until now this was the only venue where this historically could be seen. However now through May 28th, 2017 the collection be on

view at the Sunnylands Center, Thursday through Sunday from 9am to 4pm, with admission free. The Sunnylands exhibition was planned for 2016 to mark the 60th anniversary of the original exhibit that took place at the National Gallery in Washington, D.C. in 1956 said Janice Lyle, director of Sunnylands Center and Gardens, adding that “the exhibition also coincides with the 50th anniversary of the Annenberg’s historic residence, but more importantly it focuses on the use of art and culture for diplomatic purposes, something the Annenberg’s promoted throughout their lives together.”

Leonore Annenberg was one of the founders of the Foundation for Art in Embassies Program (FAPE) which provided permanent works of American art to embassies throughout the world. “What better way to introduce art than through our Ambassadors worldwide,” said Joan Agajanian Quinn, a former California Arts Council member. She has been involved with this unique program for nearly two decades. The Steuben Glass Collection coincides with President Barack Obama’s Summit with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) at Sunnylands Feb.

15 and 16. This perfectly timed exhibition of Steuben Glass will be viewed with five of the ten ASEAN nations represented in the collection in attendance. These countries are Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam and Burma. The Rancho Mirage Public Library shared in this cultural event when glass scholar William Warmus spoke here on January 28th as part of the Sunnylands Series. Sunnylands is located at 37977 Bob Hope Drive in Rancho Mirage.

and respected Southern California supermarket business open it’s doors in Rancho Mirage at 36-101 Bob Hope Drive in Rancho Mirage on January 28th . Enticing shoppers to the event were commemorative gift bags packed with samples of Gelson’s products plus a $25 gift certificate designated to the first 200 shoppers. The bags were designed with images of Rancho Mirage making this the perfect take away gift.

The ribbon cutting took place at 9:15 AM with Gelson’s executives and Rancho Mirage officials all smiles. Rob McDougall, President and CEO presided as Gelson’s fans; many familiar with the Brand had fond memories of shopping at Gelson’s in Westlake Village. Encino, Sherman Oaks, and Tarzana. “Memories of Gelsons remind me of good times,” said local author Grace Robbins, from birthday parties to holiday parties, over the years. Our friends and family could always depend on

Gelson’s to make entertaining memorable.”

As the 200 lucky bag holders munched on goodies from Snyder’s of Hanover pretzels to Love Grown Foods MightyFlakes checking out produce and pet food products, others were sampling everything from fresh oysters to freshly squeezed orange juice. Enhancing this appetizing Grand Opening were lavish displays of decorated cakes, and baked goods with shimmering chocolate frosting all fragrancing

the air with a delightful scent. First day shoppers sported delicious smiles; the scene was one of happy faces everywhere. As shoppers waltzed with their carts from aisle to aisle, it was obvious shoppers who don’t even cook found Gelson’s a hit with catering, hand carved sandwiches and take out choices from sushi, salads to delight the eye and palate .

Gelson’s is known t h r o u g h o u t S o u t h e r n Californiawith eighteen locations from Calabases to Newport Beach, however this is the first Gelson’s to open in the Coachella Valley. Normal Store hours at their Rancho Miragelocation at the corner of Gerald Ford and Bob Hope are from 7 am to 10 pm, seven days. Making Gelson’s even more popular is their emphasis o healthy food choices, all discussedin their 32-page guide, Jessica’s Healthy Living Guide, authored by Jessica Siegel, Gelson’s Registered Dietitian. Phyllis Eisenberg, who shares her time between Chicago and Palm Desert, pointed out the guide listed “Sources of Sweeteners to Restrict of avoid”, noting that agave, corn syrup and fruit purees were on the

‘restrict or avoid’ list. In Gelson style their customers are directed to their website ( gelsons.com/table/nn ) for substitutes. Their service deli features nutritious prepares foods ‘by Jessica’, as well. Pets are taken seriously as well. Grace Robbins, headed for the Aisle 4 where pet food and accessories would make any cat purr or pup beg for more. Jim Dunn of Cathedral City was at the service deli planning his next party platter. Joann Horwitz, an original Gelson customer from Westlake Village said “ this Gelson’s is a ten star , the new wonder market in Rancho Mirage, eveything here is pristine, produce out of sight and shelves stocked artistically. Grand Opening shoppers were greeted by singing employees , “Welcome to Gelsons !” “You can tell this Is going to be a happy, delicious and nutritious supermart for our community, they even placed a coupon for Gelson’s Finest Hummus in each gift bag, ” said Ms. Horwitz. And there’s more… As shoppers departed, Sarah Lee presented them with a loaf of fresh sliced Artisan Bread. “Such service, so classy,” commented Ms. Horwitz.

If you have kids, then you’ve heard of R.L. Stine and his countless Goosebumps novels for young readers. I first experienced “Goosebumps” when I visited my sister in North Carolina and her youngest son Daniel gave me a few to read because he said, “They are funny and always have a surprise ending.” And even though I wasn’t a kid when I read them, I found them clever and amusing too.

The film “Goosebumps” stars Jack Black as a mysterious, elusive author who lives next door to Zach and his mother. They have just moved into the neighborhood to start a new life in a new state after the death of Zach’s dad. As the teenager is unpacking his things from their car, he notices a girl in the window. She spots him too and comes to the fence between their two houses to say hello. Soon Stein comes out and tells the young man to stay away from his daughter. But why is the author so unfriendly? Ah, the answer is a mystery of course and it is the key to the cinematic story that is about to unfold featuring many of the monsters that the prolific author has created for young fans over the years,

At first Zach (Dylan Minnette) stays away, not wishing to cause trouble, but when he thinks Hannah Stein (Odeya Rush) may

be in danger he enlists the help of a kid he met on his first day in his new school (Ryan Lee). They break into the Stein house to save her. Big mistake, but not for the plot… Soon the monsters in the many Goosebumps stories come to life and that is scary fun.

As R.L. Stein says at one point in the movie, “Every good story has a beginning, a middle and…. a twist.” And it is those twists that make a Goosebumps tale so much fun. “Goosebumps” is rated PG for scary scenes involving all kinds of monsters from giant insects, an army of garden gnomes to an abominable snowman. The monsters are great fun, but their interaction with the town and the students, while clever and exciting, may be too intense for very young children.

••••••••••••••“Sicario,” written by Taylor

Sheridan and directed by Denis Villeneuve, takes an engrossing violent look at U.S. efforts to control the Mexican cartels and eliminate illicit drug trafficking inside the USA and along the Mexican border. Emily Blunt plays Kate, a dedicated, very skilled FBI agent who has been selected to work with CIA agent Matt Graver (Josh Brolin) and the mysterious Alehandro (Benecio del Toro). Who is he, and why is he a part of the CIA/FBI team?

We are kept in the dark, but so is Kate. She is told to keep her eyes open and remain vigilant. Things will be explained to her in due course.

As the pieces in the puzzle unfold we are brought into the undercover, covert tactics used by the FBI and CIA to find, capture or kill elusive drug lords who are wreaking havoc on both sides of the border.

Sicario, Spanish for hit man, is a clue to what is gong on in the film as the agents and Alehandro work together to track down a notorious drug lord hidden away in Mexico. While it is business for the agents, it appears to be personal for del Toro. But why and who is he anyway?

The film reveals the brutality of the drug lords. As “Sicario” begins we see Kate and other FBI agents confront a group of Mexican drug cartel members residing in the states, close to the border. After the bloody shootout that follows, agents make a horrifying discovery. In the walls of the drug, smugglers’ hiding place they find countless dead bodies stuffed insides the walls.

The cartel uses all sorts of terrifying ways to retain control over the people in their country who live in constant fear since anyone who gets in their way is killed. Often bodies are hung up in the town or victims are dissolved in acid. While much

violence and cruelty is depicted or alluded to, it is never overly gratuitous, however, the film is not for the feint of heart. Rated R for depictions of violence and language.

••••••••••••••Good news from PBS. This

month the final season (Season 6) of “Downton Abbey” will be available on DVD. You can also own the six-part Civil War drama “Mercy Street” from executive producer Ridley Scott.

On February 16, “Labyrinth of Lies” debuts on Blu-ray and DVD. It is Germany’s Academy Award entry for Best Foreign Language Film.

Story and Photos by Pat KrauseThe Angel View Luncheon

is always one of the events that women love to participate in. There is shopping and a style show, a great lunch and entertainment. There is never a hurry shopping as there is plenty of time before lunch to look over the many items that come from all 17 Angel View Stores in southern California. The prices are very low for top name brands in shoes, clothing and jewelry. Several women saw the fantastic deals and they had armloads of clothing. The Boutique Angel View Stores carry not only clothes but also household items and furniture that have been donated. There was also a raffle and silent auction items so nothing is overlooked for a splendid afternoon.

There were 7 models this year showing clothing that can be purchased. The difference this year that 3 of the models were clients of Angel view and reside at Angel View Homes. They were Rachel Welk, Corie Marshall and Marlina Silva, looked so grand in their dresses, and were excited to be a part of this event. The other women models showed garments from sports wear to designer gowns and included, Jill Hayes, Gail Jacobs and Dalarna Lundvall. David Miller is the only male model and has been a

model for years at these style shows. He wore casual sporty outfits western complete with a cowboy hat and then looked so sophisticated in a tux at the finale of the show.

The event was held at Cuistot Restaurant on January 28th with every seat filled.

Dan McGrath from CBS radio KEZN-FM did his usual grand job as Emcee. The incredible Tommi Rose entertained the guests with his wonderful voice singing some well-known country western tunes like “Crazy” and “Stand By Your Man”.

The guests sang along

with a lot of the tunes. This was a more upbeat luncheon than in the past. A really was a fun afternoon with a Wild West Theme. Angel

NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bid-ding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if appli-cable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call, 916-939-0772 for

information regarding the trustee’s sale or visit this Internet Web site, www.nationwideposting.com, for information regarding the sale of this property, using the file number assigned to this case, T.S.# 9986-4828. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the internet Web site. MISCONDUCT is a mystery thriller that has more twists and turns than a giant box of salty pretzels. Directed by Shintaro Shimosawa from the screenplay by Simon Boyes and Adam Mason, the film has an incredible cast, including Josh Dudhamel as Ben Cahill, a high-powered litigator, Al Pacino as Charles Abrams, the senior partner of the law firm for which Ben works, Anthony Hopkins, as Arthur Denning, the multi-billionaire owner of a pharmaceutical company, Alice Eve as Ben’s wife, Charlotte, and Malin Akerman as Ben’s ex-college girlfriend Emily. The excellent supporting cast includes, Byung-hun Lee, Julia Stiles, and Glen Powell.

The plot revolves around revenge, unrequited love, murder, and a pharmaceutical cover up of a drug that caused hundreds of deaths. Emily shows up after ten years and tries to seduce

Ben. Coincidentally, she is Denning’s girlfriend and gives Ben evidence that a popular drug had the test reports altered, removing any mention of the hundreds of fatalities. So the cat-and-mouse games begin and the lines soon become blurred as to who are the good guys and who are the bad guys. Ben’s wife is a nurse suffering from depression due to a family tragedy. Seemingly innocent, she, too, gets entangled in the complicated web, blurring the lines even further. In her case, let’s just say you can’t judge a book by its innocent cover.

A throbbing sound track by Federico Jusid underscores the mystery and adds to the growing tension. Michael Fimognari’s cinematography is splendid, capturing some stunning night scenes. You might leave the movie theatre with some questions about

confusing plot points. However, despite some narrative flaws, MISCONDUCT is an exciting 106 minutes that makes for some interesting post-screening discussions.

MOVIE REVIEW WITH BEVERLY COHN

By Jack LyonsTheatre and Film Critic

Playwright Neil Simon was the ‘Comedy King of Broadway’, and as a matter of fact, everywhere else on the planet. Name me a playwright that can boast thirty-three smash hits on Broadway in a career, with 3 hits running at the same time? I didn’t think you could because he’s the only American playwright to turn the trick.

Simon wrote mostly comedies. However, he did try a dramedy once. His “Gingerbread Lady” was his only foray into serious and sensitive subject matter. But his fans and audiences wanted to see and enjoy the Simon of old. And he got the message. It was back to Simon-styled comedy.

“Doc” (his nickname) is still with us scribbling in his notebook but many of his loyal fans have left the planet. The replacement audiences of today alas, march to the beat of different drummers. If you’re a lover of well written comedy plays then you’re in luck. Vintage Neil Simon comedy is alive and well on the stage of the Joslyn Center presented by Desert Theatreworks.

“Laughter on the 23rd Floor”, nicely directed by Lance Phillip-Martinez, is Simon’s

hilarious tribute to the manic comedy style of the great Marx Brothers, and to the nuttiness of ‘You’re Show of Shows’ (a staple of ‘50’s television) with Sid Caesar and his cast of wacky characters and situations.

“Laughter” features an energetic and talented cast of nine actors who relish the frenetic pace, silliness, and onstage antics under the watchful eye of director Phillips-Martinez. Arnie Kleban stars as Max Prince (think a harried Sid Caesar in his heyday), as producer and star of NBC’s top television show. Prince, is constantly at loggerheads with top NBC brass over his budgets. They want to trim them, he wants to keep them the same. He wants to keep the writing team intact. Besides, the status quo is comfortable. How the writers and Max accomplish this miracle is the meat and fun of this roman a clef- based production on Simon’s own career as a writer during the golden age of TV comedy shows.

Kleban’s nuanced and hassled comedy star turn as Max, is ably supported by: Mason McIntosh, who plays the narrator and writer Lucas Brickman (Simon’s alter-ego); Ed Lefkowitz as Milt Fields;

Jason Lewis as the Russian émigré writer Val Slotzky; Tanner Lieser as Kenny Franks; Tiffani Lobue as Carol Wyman the only female writer on the staff, brings her special brand of comic goofiness when she finds out she’s pregnant; Stephen McMillen as Brian Doyle, the token gentile from Ireland, never stops teasing and poking fun at his fellow writers; Mike Olton as sad-sack hypochondriac Ira Stone, delivers a little gem of a

comedy performance. Stephee Bonifacio as Helen the office secretary rounds out this stellar ensemble cast.

The comedy production is not only directed by Phillips-Martinez, he’s also the Lighting and Sound designer. Ron Phillips-Martinez is responsible for the clever set and space giving the actors full range to display their talent.

The costumes designed by Michele Dobson, Props by

Priscilla Lawson, and comedy coaching by Peter Nicholson along with Light board operator Kay Kudukis, and Sound board operator Angus Feath, complete the technical team.

“Laughter on the 23rd Floor” performs at the Joslyn Center in the Arthur Newman Theatre, in Palm Desert, and runs through February 7, 2016. For reservations and ticket information, call 760-980-1455.
