President’s MessageBob Petrach, Safety Technology International

I want to thank Pete Grelle, Material Auction Chair for the tremendous effort he put into the Material Auction. As

I write this the Auction hasn’t taken place yet. Pete’s article next month will provide details of this year’s auction. The Material Auction is one of the major events that support the great SPE Detroit education efforts. Without the great effort of Pete and his team SPE Detroit would be unable to maintain our many educational programs including such items as support for SPE Foundation scholarships, section awarded college scholarships ($25,000 this year – see last newsletter!), Plastivan visits, the essay contest, technical dinner meetings, student chapters, and sponsorship of college travel to ANTEC to name a few. This is the second year in a row that Pete has run the Material Auction.

Of course the donors and buyers of the auction materials also deserve our thanks as well. Pete expanded the program this year to provide more recognition to the donors and buyers.

The success of the Material Auction helps one meet one of our major goals to help educate the membership and community and to expand the knowledge of plastics.

Our next technical dinner meeting will March 19 at 6 p.m. at the Best Western Sterling Inn, Warren, MI. Topic is “Benefits of computer design optimization to reduce mass, cost and speed developments” is the presented by Juan Pablo Leiva, COO of Vanderplaats Research and Development. There is a charge for this event.

On April 16 we’ll have a presentation “Optimizing Product Costs from Pre-quote to End of Life” and Tour hosted by Munro & Associates on April 16 at 1749 Northwood Drive at 1749 Northwood Drive, Troy, MI 48084. This event is held jointly with local SME chapters and Munro & Associates are providing the meal. This is a no fee event but does require reservations and there is a limit of 40 attendees.

7th-Annual SPE AutoEPCON Conference which is a joint conference between the Detroit Section and the Automotive Division is May 1, 2012. It will be MSU Conference Center in Troy Michigan.. If you are interested in assisting with planning the conference please contact Nippani Rao at [email protected]. The committee already has an impressive set of keynote speakers lined up – David Cole of Center for Automotive Research, Kathy Minnich of Ford, Allan Taub of GM, and Maria Ciliberti of Ticona.

This conference features technical presentations on the newest advances in materials technology, predictive engineering, process enhancements, and application developments for thermoplastic and thermoset engineering plastics for the automotive industry. Tabletop exhibits are also on display throughout the event.

Councilor and Board elections are coming. Please watch for ballots for election of Councilor, a three year term representing the Detroit Section at Councilor Meetings.

Norm Kakarala has served with distinction the past three years and is not seeking reelection. We should all thank him for his dedicated service to the Section and SPE.

Ballots also will include selections for the four board seats for the 2015 term. Ballots are earlier due to ANTEC being early as it is in conjunction with NPE.

I do want to make a correction in regards to the 14th-Annual SPE TPO Automotive Engineered Polyolefins Conference. Last newsletter I incorrectly said Sassan Tarahomi was Chair. He is still handling the massive house duties arranging all the facilities. The Co-Chairs for the entire conference are Bill Windscheif, Advanced Innovative Solutions, Ltd and Jeff Valentage, ExxonMobil Chemical. Technical Chair is Dr. Norm Kakarala, Inteva Products – watch for the call for papers you should have it before you see this newsletter.

SPE Detroit Section relies exclusively on the efforts and dedication of the volunteer members. The SPE and the Detroit Section events would not exist without your support. If you have suggestions or are interested in sharing your time to help make a difference, please contact one of the board or committee members listed on the back page. Please feel free to come to one of the board meetings, you’ll be amazed at the activity and the people involved. Activity on the board or one of the committees is a tremendous chance to learn and grow as well as work with industry leaders and help create the next generation of plastics professionals.

Dawn Stephens can reserve you a spot if you call her at 248/244-8993 (office hours are M,W-F 9:00 AM—2:30 PM) or email her at [email protected].

The next board meeting of the SPE Detroit Section will be Monday March 26, 2012 from 5:30pm to 8:00pm at the American Chemistry Council, 1800 Crooks Rd., Troy, MI.

A frequent speaker and advisor to some of the world’s top manufacturing executives on implementing cultural change and integrated product development strategies, Sandy Munro offers his clients a wealth of perspective and a penchant for technology transfer. Although he began his career in the automotive industry and has worked extensively with global automakers and key tier one suppliers, his expertise and insight cuts across virtually every segment of the manufacturing industry.

One of the pioneers in the application of design for assembly (DFA)/design for manufacturability (DFM) principles, Sandy Munro founded his consulting firm, Munro & Associates, Inc., in 1988 to help North American manufacturers harness the power of concurrent engineering/DFM to reach new levels of global competitiveness.

Since that time, Munro & Associates, Inc. has helped manufacturers of all types of products-from airplanes to toys, appliances to medical devices, and automobiles to electronics-to save an estimated $9 billion and retain or return to North America some 65,000 jobs. Also, his company’s service portfolio has expanded to include a number of interrelated tools to help manufacturing companies succeed, including ergonomics consulting, competitive benchmarking, strategic product planning, value analysis/value-engineering services, and the Quality Report Card, which can help companies reach six sigma quality levels.

About Munro & Associates:

Working in partnership with their clients, Munro & Associates relies on management and engineering experience and analysis to help manufacturers vault far ahead of their competition. In the process, Munro helps their clients break industry and corporate paradigms to generate true creativity: that of their own employees.

Munro helps companies eliminate outdated rules, waste and variation. They also introduce companies to new technologies, processes and approaches from other industry segments that can generate breakthrough results.

Munro & Associates helps clients put the right disciplines and approaches into place, to ensure continuing, repetitive success.

Munro’s world headquarters is operated from its own 26,000 square foot building located in Troy, Michigan. The current facility is comprised of office space, the Technology Center and the Benchmarking Information Center (BIC). Munro is planning the construction of its second facility adjacent to the current building.

Membership ReportGary Kogowski, Entec Polymers

When I was a graduate student at the University of Michigan it was a chore

to travel between North Campus and Central campus in search of technical papers and articles to support my research and studies. Written periodicals, the “Xerox” machine, and professor networks were the main source of information. This was the information network not too long ago. Fast forward to 2012. Today’s student has access to many information services specific to their area of study. Research papers can be reviewed quickly on- line and pertinent subject information quickly gathered.

However, with so much information available on the internet, how can students focus on exactly what is needed for their academic field? For students in the areas of polymer engineering or polymer science the SPE student membership offers one of the best resources to search for information related to a subject in polymer science. For example, ANTEC papers and Plastics Engineering articles may be accessed through SPE’s Plastics Research Online. Access to plastics periodicals are only part of the benefits of an SPE student membership. Additional benefits include:

•SubscriptiontoPlastics Engineering magazine

•Sectionaffiliation

•Divisionaffiliation

•PositionWantedadinPlastics Engineering magazine

•Tapintoanonlinecommunityofeducational institutions and experienced plastics professionals through SPE’s online chat rooms and message boards.

•RegistrationtoselectSPEconferencesandmeetings, sponsored by SPE’s Technical Divisions

•Discountsonimportantpublications, textbooks, videos, and other training products.

•ReducedregistrationforSPEseminarsandtraining programs

•TheSPEFoundationgrantsover$60,000annually in scholarships

•Memberdiscountprograms

2011 STI

Due to increased demand by customers, Safety Technology International, Inc. (STI) added to their private manufacturing capabilities with three all electric ROBOSHOT S2000i-B injection molding machines, along with related auxiliary equipment.

The two 198 ton clamp force and one 100 ton clam force machines allow STI to better serve their customers by making more products quickly and efficiently. With a molded product coming off the line every fifty-two seconds, the machines help cut down on lead time when a large order is placed.

STI brought work back to the United States and Michigan, the company’s headquarter base. Since installing the new molding machines, sixteen molds have been brought back from China, eleven molds from other businesses and built nine new molds at Competitive Mold & Detail in Imlay City, Michigan. PC and colorant is purchased through Chase Plastics, Clarkston, Michigan and most tooling and molding supplies are purchased from DME Co., located in Madison Heights, Michigan.

The machines operate on a one shift basis, nine hours a day, five days a week. Going forward, STI continues to evaluate what products can be molded economically in-house and has started to integrate the assembly process and secondary operations with the injection molding operation on some products. Currently, the products are molded in polycarbonate and over 90% are clear.

The STI family was able to grow with the addition of three employees to help with the increased manufacturing demands. In a time where layoffs are a common occurrence, STI is proud to be able to hire new team members.

It was John Taylor, executive vice president of R & D, vision that by molding as many components as practical in house and sourcing locally, where both timing and economics made sense, STI could be more responsive to customer needs and lower overall costs.

Headquartered in Waterford, Michigan with an office in Worcestershire, England, STI is a family owned and operated business that began more than

30 years ago when Founder, Jack Taylor, invented the Pull Station Protector. Safety Technology now markets more than 300 products throughout the world. These products help prevent false fire alarms, theft and vandalism of the things that protect us all.

STI’s first product came directly at the request of a customer, Garnett Hegeman, a high school principal in the Detroit area, who had a problem with false fire alarms. Taylor and his associates went to work on the challenge, and created what is now the world famous Stopper® II, a cover to help prevent false fire alarms. The rest is history, resulting in a new company, the Stopper® Line of over 1000 products and a new segment of the fire and safety industry.

Many STI products are a direct result of customers’ requests. If you have a false fire alarm, theft, vandalism or other problem, STI invites you to contact them with the challenge of solving it for you.

STI manufactures many solutions for fire/safety product problems. If children are pulling false fire alarms, STI offers a protective cover to help prevent the problem. Smoke detectors, strobe/horns, exit signs, emergency lights, motion detectors, CCTV cameras, clocks, etc. are subject to vandalism and accidental damage. STI’s protective wire cages help assure these important devices are operational when needed. Environmentally controlled cabinets allow sensitive electronic devices to be centrally located yet protected against the elements. Alarms for exit/entry doors or fire extinguishers, wireless door chimes, doorbell buttons, switches and alarm/strobe controllers help prevent unwanted use of devices or to alert when a protected door is being accessed. Wirelessly monitor open or closed garage doors, mail delivery, cars entering or leaving a driveway, exit doors, fire extinguishers, fences, gates, cabinets, push buttons, sheds, barns, etc. A barking dog alarm helps alert home owner of an intruder or a handheld alarm helps fend off muggers (while jogging or walking to a car).
