DEVILS RALLY TO BEAT READING, 5-2Reading, PA - Ryan Ginand had a goal and an assist, Taylor Vichorek

provided his first-career professional goal and Jeff Lerg made 34 of 36 saves as the Trenton Devils defeated the Reading Royals, 5-2, at Sovereign Center in Reading Friday night.

After scoring three unanswered goals to win against the Devils Wednesday night, the Royals jumped out to 1-0 lead when Yannick Riendeau scored 1:37 into the first period for his first goal with Reading after being assigned to the Royals from Providence (AHL) earlier this week. The Devils quickly answered back 2:17 later when Jeff Prough forced his sixth goal of the season through Royals goaltender Matt Dalton to tie the score off of a set-up from the right goal line by Tony Zancanaro and Jeremy Akeson. But the Devils didn’t gain momentum from their game-tying score as the Royals again took a one-goal lead when former Devil Eric Castonguay scored his second goal in a Reading uniform, assisted by Riendeau, who tallied his second point of the night on Castonguay’s marker.

The Devils again tied the score with Ryan Hayes blasting a one-time feed from Ryan Ginand past the lower stick-side of Matt Dalton to notch his fourth goal of the season. Darcy Zajac also recorded his fourth assist of the season on the play which tied the score with 7:10 remaining in the second period. The Devils broke the back-and-forth scoring trend, taking their first lead with six seconds remaining in the second period. Darcy Zajac won an offensive zone face-off following a Reading icing, and the puck came back to T.J. Miller at the left point. His hard shot was stopped by Dalton, but Ryan Ginand banged home a second rebound for his third goal and 10th point of the season, making the score 3-2, with assists going to both Miller and Zajac.

T.J. Miller added another assist 2:24 into the third period on Taylor Vichorek’s first-career professional goal to give Trenton a two-goal lead, 4-2. Behind by two goals, the Royals frantically fought back in an effort to extend their five-game winning streak by outshooting the Devils 14-9 in the third period, but goaltender Jeff Lerg made big stops in big

moments to maintain the Devils’ lead, including two stellar glove saves and a remarkable split save. After Reading pulled its goaltender for an extra attacker late in the third period, Gord Burnett put the game away for Trenton by hitting the empty cage from deep within his defensive zone, his second goal in two-games this season.

Winning 5-2, the Devils snap their two-game losing streak and improve to 5-5-0-1 while the Royals drop to 8-6-0-0. With their season-series tied at two, the Devils and Royals will next battle December 4 at the Sun National Bank Center. Trenton is back in action Saturday night at home against the Elmira Jackals at 7:00 p.m.

Ryan Ginand had a goal and an assist as the Devils evened the season series with Reading, 2-2.

Forward Darcy Zajac is in his first professional season with the Trenton Devils in 2010-11, having played the last four seasons at the University of North Dakota (WCHA). The younger brother of New Jersey Devils center Travis Zajac, the younger Darcy scored his first-career professional goal in the second period of the Devils’ 3-2 victory over the Gwinnett Gladiators on October 28 and has scored three points in the last two games.

Darcy has two younger brothers who are also playing hockey: Kelly, who’s in his third season at Union College, and Nolan, who’s in his second

season with the USHL’s Cedar Rapids Roughriders. The father of the four Zajacs, Tom, played college hockey for the University of Denver.

Q: What was your favorite NHL team growing up? Favorite player? A: Even though they aren’t around anymore, I grew up in Winnipeg, and

the Jets were always my favorite team. Teemu Selanne was such a great player for the Jets in those days, so he was my favorite player.

Q: Before games, what kind of music do you like to listen to?A: Some guys have a band or song that they like, but I’m really not picky.

Anything in the light rock genre works for me.

Q: If there was a movie about your life, who would play you?A: Even though I don’t look anything like him and I’m not sure if I even

have anything in common with him, the person that I would “want” to play me would be Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.

Q: If there was one place that you could go on vacation to, where would it be?

A: I don’t really get a chance to take many vacations, but I’ve always wanted to go to the Cayman Islands.

Q: If there were three people that you could meet, alive or dead, believe or make believe, who would they be?

A: Well I’m a hockey player, so Wayne Gretzky is an easy one. But other than that? If they don’t have to be real people, I’d want to meet Stan’s father, Randy Marsh, from South Park. Let me say my teammate, Matt Lombardi, 30 years from now, as my third one. He’s a mystery man, so seeing how he’ll be 30 years from now…I don’t even know what else there is to say about that.

Pat Burns, who coached the New Jersey Devils to the 2003 Stanley Cup Championship, and served as a member of the team’s coaching staff the past eight seasons, passed away Friday after a courageous bout with cancer at Maison Aube-Lumiere in Sherbrooke, Que.

Pat Burns served as the Devils’ head coach from June 13, 2002-July 8, 2005 before stepping down due to personal reasons. He became just the 11th individual in NHL history to reach the 1,000 games-

coached mark on February 27, 2004, and was the ninth to reach the 500-win plateau on March 30, 2004. Burns led the club to a 46-26-10=108pt (.622) record and its third Stanley Cup Championship in 2002-03. He posted a career mark of 501-353-165 (.573) in 1,019 NHL games coached, three times winning the NHL’s Jack Adams Award, given annually to the coach judged to have contributed the most to his team’s success, as voted by the NHL Broadcasters’ Association.

Pat Burns is survived by his beloved wife, Line, his daughter, Maureen, son, Jason, stepdaughter, Stephanie, stepson, Maxime, and grandson, Samuel.

Page 4: Devils Extra 2010_11_20 Game 12 vs Elmira

The Trenton Devils host the Elmira Jackals in the second meeting of the season between the teams. The Jackals scored two third period goals against Devils goaltender Dave Caruso last Saturday night in Elmira to squeak out a 5-4 win. Tonight, the Devils look for some redemption on home ice against the first-place Jackals without some of their top players on the ice. Captain Trevor Kell, Dan Charleston and Dave Caruso are still up in Albany with the AHL squad, meaning the Devils will need more players to step up in their absence.

The Devils were able to avenge their crushing 3-2 loss on Wednesday night against Reading by dominating the Royals 5-2 on the road last night at Sovereign Center. Jeff Prough paced the Devils with his team-leading sixth goal of the season while forward Ryan Ginand captured first star honors by scoring the game-winning goal and adding an assist in the convincing victory. Goaltender Jeff Lerg filled in amicably for Dave Caruso, winning his third straight start by stopping 34 shots to run his record to 4-1 on the young season.

The Devils sit eight points behind Elmira in the Atlantic Division standings and will need to find a way to slow down Jackals forwards Michael Dubuc and Justin Donati, who are both tied for second place in the ECHL with 21 points. Elmira is yet to lose in regulation on the road, carrying a 4-0-1-0 record into Sun National Bank Center. Trenton will look to build off an emotional win last night before traveling to Florida on Monday. #34 Jeff Prough had three consecutive game-winning goals vs. Elmira last season.

Trenton forwards Dan Charleston and Trevor Kell were both recalled from Trenton to the AHL-Albany Devils on Monday.

Charleston, 25, has a goal and five assists in three games for Trenton this season, his second year in the Devils organization. With Trenton in 2009-10, the Oak Forest, IL native compiled 33 points (6g, 27a) in 25 games. Charleston began 2010-11 with Albany but did not make an appearance. In four seasons at the University of Nebraska-Omaha, the 5-8, 180-lb. forward totaled 43 goals and 73 assists for 116 points in 159 games.

Kell, 24, leads Trenton in scoring with 11 points (5g, 6a) through the team’s first nine games in 2010-11. Playing in the Devils organization since 2007, the Thunder Bay, ON native has appeared in 179 regular season ECHL games and 16 AHL games, accumulating 132 points (57g, 75a) with ECHL-Trenton and 9 points (4g, 5a) with AHL-Lowell. The 6-0, 185-lb. forward chipped in five postseason points (3g, 2a) in a seven-game playoff series for Trenton in 2008-09. Named Trenton’s captain at the start of the 2009-10 season, Kell spent four years in the OHL with London and Sarnia, capping his junior career with 73 points (37g, 36a) in 2006-07.

COACHING MOVES Like the Devils, the Elmira Jackals have a first-

year head coach in 2010-11. Malcolm Cameron took over the duties on June 2, 2010, replacing Steve Martinson as both Elmira’s head coach and director of hockey operations. Cameron is an eight-year veteran of the ECHL, having previously coached four other teams with his most recent stint coming with the Florida Everblades. His all-time ECHL head coaching record is 295-149-59, good for a .645 winning percentage, with his teams never having missed the playoffs. Last season, Cameron’s Florida squad eliminated his new team, the Jackals, three games to two in the first round of the Kelly Cup Playoffs.

ELMIRA ROSTER MOVES The Elmira Jackals announced Saturday that

they have loaned forward Michael Dubuc to the AHL’s Rochester Americans. The Jackals have also activated forward Corey Cowick and defenseman Eric Regan from the injured reserve prior to their game on Saturday night at Trenton.

Dubuc is on a seven-game scoring streak (5g-7a) which began on Nov. 2 in Cincinnati. The Granby, Quebec native has goals in four-straight contests and leads Elmira with 11 tallies.

Cowick has skated in one game with the Jackals this season after having been reassigned to the team by Elmira’s NHL affiliate, the Ottawa Senators, from the Jackals’ AHL affiliate, the Binghamton Senators, on Oct. 30.

Regan has points in four-consecutive games (1g-3a). He was inactive in Elmira’s win against Trenton on Nov. 13.

ELMIRA, TRENTON SERIESLast season Trenton dominated the season

series with Elmira, taking eleven out of fourteen games against their division rivals. The Devils were 5-2 in Elmira last season and 6-1 at home against the Jackals, outscoring Elmira 45-40 in the season series in which Dave Caruso won nine of his ten decisions. As division champions a season ago, 11 of Elmira’s 32 losses came against Trenton with the Devils’ 22 points against Elmira being more than Trenton earned against any team last season. The highlight of the series came when Devils swept three consecutive games against the Jackals with forward Jeff Prough scoring three consecutive game-winning goals on November 6th,7th and 8th. Trenton will look to continue their run at home against Elmira tonight at Sun National Bank Center at 7:00 p.m.
