DEVILS CAN’T CRACK ROYALS IN 4-3 LOSS

Trenton, NJ - Devin Timberlake scored twice in the first period to lead the Reading Royals to a 4-3 win over the Trenton Devils in the rubber game of the three-day weekend series between the teams. Trevor Kell, Ryan Hayes and Ryan Ginand scored for the Devils but two quick strikes by Reading’s Jared Ross and Todd Perry early in the second period proved to be the difference maker in today’s matinee matchup.

Timberlake opened the game’s scoring 6:27 into the game by beating Jeff Lerg on a rebound for his sixth goal of the season. Lerg stopped the first two shots fired his way but was unable to corral the rebound before Timberlake was able to flip the puck past him. Five minutes later, Timberlake struck again as he poked in a loose puck into an open net as Lerg had been taken out of position on the original shot from Andrew

Sarauer.Trevor Kell got the Devils on the board with six minutes left in the opening

period by beating Ben Scrivens with a hard wrist shot from the left circle for his tenth goal of the season. Ryan Ginand picked up the first of his two assists of the game by laying a perfect drop pass for the streaking Kell to skate in to. Jeremy Akeson picked up the second assist on the goal as Reading carried a 2-1 lead into the first intermission.

Starting the second period on a power play courtesy of a Taylor Vichorek roughing penalty, Jared Ross blistered a one-timer from the blue-line past Lerg just 27 seconds into the frame. Fourteen seconds later, Todd Perry came streaking down the right side and fired a wrist shot over Lerg’s glove to give the Royals a commanding 4-1 lead within the first minute of the second period. Former Devil Eric Castonguay picked up the primary assist on both goals.

Immediately after Perry’s shot went in, last night’s winning goaltender Shane Connelly came off the bench to replace Lerg, who stopped 8 out of the 12 shots he faced in 20:51. Over the course of the next thirty-nine minutes the Devils outshot the Royals 34-5 but were unable to come away with the win.

Brad Miller got momentum back on the Trenton side by pinballing a shot through traffic and past Scrivens to cut the deficit in half at 4-2. With under two minutes left in the second period, Ginand followed up his own shot and deposited his 18th goal of the season to get the Devils within one. Ryan Hayes assisted on both goals and now has nineteen on the year, Justin Pender picked up the second assist on Ginand’s goal.

Carrying all the momentum into the final period, the Devils were unable to tie the game as the Royals suffocated the Trenton offense and denied them the tying marker. Ben Scrivens stopped 41 shots for Reading and Connelly stopped all five shots he faced in relief of Lerg who was pinned with the loss.

The Wings have been a member of the ECHL since 2009. The franchise began play in the year 2000, as a member of the now defunct United Hockey League. The Wings took their name in 2000 from a former IHL team, also called the Kalamazoo Wings, who existed from 1974-2000.

The Wings have won three championships in team history. Kalamazoo captured two Turner Cups as IHL champions in 1978-79 and 1979-80, and the UHL’s Colonial Cup in 2005-06.

Nick Bootland is in his third season coaching Kalamazoo. Bootland’s coaching career began following a 718-game professional career, when he played for the Hershey Bears (AHL), Cleveland Barons (AHL), Cincinnati Cyclones (ECHL), Columbus Stars (UHL) and Kalamazoo Wings.

Two Wings alums with ties to the New Jersey Devils are Reid Simpson and Manny Fernandez. Simpson played 59 games for New Jersey, including nine in the club’s Stanley Cup winning 1994-95 season. Fernandez, a goalie with 315-career games in the NHL, is the nephew of New Jersey’s current head coach, Jacques Lemaire.

The Wings play in Kalamazoo, Michigan, a city of 80,000, located 140 miles west of Detroit. Famous natives and residents of Kalamazoo include New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter, Wendy’s founder Dave Thomas, and actor/comedian Tim Allen.

#25 Jeremy Akeson was the only Devil with a +2 Sunday vs. Reading.

KALAMAZ00 WINGSFRANCHISE OVERVIEW

ROSTER SHUFFLING NOT UNIQUE TO ECHL TEAMSSPECIAL FROM ECHL COMMUNICATIONS

While ECHL fans, coaches and media often lament the impact “injuries and call-ups” have on the roster of their favorite team, the reality is that roster movement is a fact of life at all levels of professional hockey.

A quick look at the numbers through January 31 shows that the average NHL team had used 30.06 players so far this year including 19 teams that had used more than 30 players.

In the AHL the average stood at 33.96 players per team with four teams using 40 or more players including San Antonio, which has been at or near the top of its division for more of the season.

By comparison, the ECHL average per team was at 34.89 players with just one team, Elmira, having used more than 40 players.

So far, there have been 88 players on NHL contract who have played in the ECHL in the 2010-11 season. Of those 88 players, 63 of them have been recalled at least once, with the total number of recalls of NHL contracted players standing at 85 total recalls.

Additionally, there have been 99 players on AHL contract who have played in the ECHL in the 2010-11 season. Of those 99 players, 54 of them have been recalled at least once, with the total number of recalls of AHL contracted players standing at 85 total recalls.

When the Pittsburgh Penguins recently went through an extended period without gifted All-Stars Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin, those players were not replaced with NHL All-Stars but rather by players recalled from their AHL affiliate in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. In addition, other team members played an increased role. The same is true in the ECHL. Opportunities exist for players to step up and play a bigger role, especially on offense, when players are recalled. The fact recalls and roster movement are so prevalent means the ECHL is the League the best young players want to play in due to the opportunities for movement.

Often overlooked is the fact that many players recalled often return to bolster ECHL rosters, particularly come playoff time, allowing fans the opportunity to witness great talent at a critical time of year.

The last two Kelly Cup champions are good examples. In 2009, the South Carolina Stingrays defeated the Alaska Aces to win their third Kelly Cup title thanks in large part to the goaltending of James Reimer, who was named the Most Valuable Player of the Kelly Cup Playoffs. Reimer was in Toronto of the American Hockey League until late in the season, when he returned to the ECHL and posted a 2.17 goals-against average and .929 save percentage in eight appearances during the Kelly Cup Playoffs.

Last season’s champion, the Cincinnati Cyclones, often shuttled players back and forth between their two AHL affiliates, Milwaukee and Hamilton, and saw the Bulldogs also advance to the AHL’s Western Conference Finals. Cincinnati was able to persevere and captured its second Kelly Cup championship in the last three seasons, defeating Idaho in five games.

In the end, injuries, recalls and reassignments are a fact of life in professional hockey. However, the level of play and competition is at a high level each night, whether in Pittsburgh with an All-Star or in the ECHL without an All-Star on recall. In both cases, those who remain step up to compete at a high level each night and provide a winning environment and top notch entertainment.

FTOREK A FAMILIAR NAMEOne of Kalamazoo’s

most experienced players is 36-year-old Sam Ftorek, who is a veteran of 755 pro games. In 13 seasons, Ftorek has 215 goals, 300 assists and 965 penalty minutes.

New Jersey hockey fans are familiar with Ftorek’s last name, as Sam’s father, Robbie, coached the New Jersey Devils for parts of two seasons, and led the club to an Atlantic Division title in 1998-99. Robbie also played eight seasons in the NHL with three different clubs.

One of the career highlights of the elder Ftorek’s 1186-game coaching career was the 1994-95 season. That year, he backed New Jersey’s AHL affiliate, the Albany River Rats, to the Calder Cup Championship, where his captain was current Trenton head coach, Kevin Dean.

The Ftoreks hail from the Boston area.

The Devils play the third game of their four-game homestand by opening a two-game series with the Kalamazoo Wings tonight at Sun National Bank Center. These are the first meetings between Trenton and Kalamazoo this season, with the clubs due to meet again at Wings Stadium March 18 and back at SunCenter March 25. Kalamazoo leads the all-time series vs. Trenton, 3-2-0-0 with all five contests coming in 2009-10, the Wings’ first year in the ECHL.

Trenton will be without its hottest scorer, Jeff Prough, in tonight’s game. Before his call-up to AHL-Albany on Monday, Prough had scored seven goals in six games since following his first stint with Albany.

Defenseman Andy Thomas and goalie Jeff Lerg will also be unavailable, with both players also having been called up to Albany in the last week.

To fill the roster spots opened by Monday’s transactions, forward Matt Lombardi has been activated from 3-day IR and Anthony Felice has been added as Trenton’s emergency backup goaltender. Lombardi has been out for the last three Devils contests.

Goaltender Dave Caruso is in his fourth consecutive week with Albany, last appearing for Trenton January 9 in South Carolina.

Looking to win for the second time in their last three games, the Devils will have to contend with Kalamazoo’s Andrew Fournier and Justin Taylor. Fournier has three points (2g, 1a) in the last two games, and Taylor has four points (3g, 1a) in the last three games. Trenton’s #15 Matt Vokes faces off against Kalamazoo’s #15 Bryan Jurynec on October 17, 2009.

Last night, former Trenton goalie Joel Martin received a phone call just minutes before the New York Islanders’ game against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

With Islanders goalie, Kevin Poulin, getting injured in warm-ups, New York was in immediate need of a backup goalie. The problem was that the game was just minutes from starting and Martin was with the Islanders’ AHL affiliate in Bridgeport, Connecticut, 67 miles from Nassau Coliseum.

The Islanders organization called for a chauffeur to drive Martin straight to the arena, where he arrived during the third period of New York’s 5-3 loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs.

This was Martin’s first appearance in an NHL uniform, and came after the native of Fort Worth, Texas started the season in the Central Hockey League, with the Odessa Jackalopes.

Martin played in 32 games with Trenton during the 2006-07 season, going 12-15-2 with a 3.07 goals-against average and .909 save percentage.
