What Is the Digital Library?
The Digital Library is an online collec8on of resources aligned to the Common Core State Standards and that support K–12 teachers in their use of the forma2ve assessment processes to adjust teaching to improve student learning. These resources include commissioned, interac8ve assessment literacy and exemplar instruc8onal modules on English–language arts and mathema8cs. The library has collabora8on features that allow users to rate materials and share their exper8se with educators across the country.

Formative Assessment Process
The Digital Library’s defini2on:
“Forma9ve Assessment is a deliberate process used by teachers and students during instruc9on that provides ac9onable feedback that is used to adjust ongoing teaching and learning strategies to improve students’ aFainment of curricular learning targets/goals.”

Grounded in the Four Attributes
All resources are grounded in the Four AIributes of the Forma2ve
Assessment Process and reviewed using Quality Criteria.

Four Attributes
The forma9ve assessment process involves any teaching or learning strategy that effec9vely
completes one or more of the forma9ve
assessment aFributes. The forma9ve
assessment process has four aFributes:
• AIribute 1: Clarify intended learning. The teacher iden8fies the instruc8onal goal, communicates the goal to students, and provides the criteria by which learning will be assessed so each student and the teacher knows whether the student is successfully progressing toward the goal.

Four Attributes (continued)
• AIribute 2: Elicit evidence. A\er a period of instruc8on, the teacher checks for students’ understanding. This could be the first dra\ of an essay, a 8cket out the door, an answer to a ques8on on a white board, pair-‐and-‐share observa8ons, or a paragraph on how to solve a mathema8cs problem.
• AIribute 3: Interpret evidence. The teacher and each student interpret the evidence and reflect on the student’s progress toward the learning goal.
7 retrieved from hUp://www.cde.ca.gov/ta/tg/sa/forma8veassessfaq.asp
Four Attributes (continued)
• AIribute 4: Act on evidence. The teacher makes adjustments to his or her ongoing instruc8onal ac8vi8es, while students also adjust their procedures for learning. The teacher and students con8nue to use strategies that work and eliminate strategies that are not effec8ve.
Forma2ve assessment is a process, not a test.

An Online Collection
The library represents an online collec8on of more than 1,900 instruc8onal and professional learning resources contributed by educators, for educators. These resources are designed to help educators integrate instruc8on with the Common Core State Standards (CCSS), and are intended to help educators implement the Forma8ve Assessment Process to improve teaching and learning.

By Educators, For Educators
The State Network of Educators (SNE) is a team of approximately 150 California educators that will evaluate professional learning resources for inclusion in the Smarter Balanced Digital Library. Between September 2013 and September 2014, members of the SNE will: • Par8cipate in five web-‐based trainings • Propose and review content for the Digital Library
• Provide feedback on the resources and the usability of the Digital Library

Members of the State Network of Educators (SNE) use the Quality Criteria to vet resources submiUed to the Digital Library. These criteria include alignment with the Common Core State Standards (CCSS), incorpora8on of high-‐level forma8ve assessment prac8ces, learning modali8es, student engagement, high-‐quality instruc8on, and media/technology.

Accessing the Digital Library
Registra8on of K–12 educators for the Digital Library is the responsibility of the designated California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) coordinator for each LEA. LEA CAASPP coordinators received the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consor1um User Provisioning Guide for the Digital Library in May 2014. The guide provides instruc8ons for uploading user account informa8on. K–12 educators must contact their LEA CAASPP coordinator to set up a user account.
