Nez Perce Tribe Distance Learning Center
The Distance Learning
Center Open House was held on Tuesday, December 7th. There is a lot of inter-est in the programs that the Tribe is offering. It was good to see a lot cur-rent students and future students in attendance.
“We have expanded and grown over the past three years.” says Bill Picard , Site Manager for North-west Indian College. “ The DLC has been growing over the past few years and of-fers so much more than it used to. There is Nez Perce Tribe Language Class during lunch hour in Classroom B.
Having a computer lab that the public-not just stu-dents can utilize will be helpful for those seeking
employment. The Depart-ment of Labor has left in-formational guides for navi-gating new branches of their website.
The DLC hopes to keep growing and expanding so they can offer more to the students.
The Open House gave the public an opportunity to meet the staff from the Nez Perce Language Program, North-west Indian College and the GED Program.
There was a quick tour to see the class-rooms and computer lab. Bill Picard de-
scribed how to use the ITV System for reaching the
classrooms in Kamiah and the main campus in
Bellingham, WA.
The staff at the DLC were very informative and offering all kinds of infor-mation for future and cur-rent students.
The Open House has brought in many students for the GED Program.
We at the DLC are already seeing good results from students attending classes and some have even taken their last tests before the New Year.
Congratulations to the hard working students who have made a return to get their GED!
It’s never too late! If you know someone who wants to get their GED please refer them to Angela Picard or Laura Conner at the DLC!

Congratulations to Adam Capetillo for completing his last GED Test!
Bill Picard is the Site Manager/Instructor for Northwest Indian College at the Nez Perce Site.
I asked Bill some questions so that we could all get to know him bet-ter.
What initially got you interested in
being here and working with NWIC?
"I have worked directly or indirectly in the education field for the past 20+ years. I felt it would be good to work for a college that works with tribal members and with the Nez Perce com-munity."
So, if students have concerns or
questions should they come to you or someone else?
"Phil, Angela, Rochelle and I all work together as a team, so the students can come to anyone of us for assistance. We do compass tests, admission forms, FASFA, enrollment, and set up class schedules and tutoring among other things."
Do you have any plans for the future or where do you see yourself in the fu-ture? Where do you see NWIC in your future here at Lapwai Nez Perce Site?
"NWIC has (with the assistance and
support of the Nez Perce Tribe) ex-panded and now has two classrooms in both Lapwai and Kamiah. NWIC would like at some point to expand to building a new building to
support bigger and more classrooms."
Is there anything you would like to
express to the stu-dents about NWIC or anything you would like them to
know about yourself?
"NWIC is a local college with a real per-sonal atmosphere, so students feel more comfortable taking classes and learning. The staff work hard to make sure the students get a good education. We are always here and available to assist."

Most CIS users now log in and work from their own My CIS Portfolio. One way to customize a portfolio is by choosing a "style", which determines the artwork on the portfolio main menu and around the edges of the CIS window. We are soliciting portfolio "style" artwork from Idaho high school or junior-high/middle school students. The best entries will have their work published in eCIS or CIS Junior, and users will be able to choose them for their own Portfolio background. Portfolio Style graphics include a large image for the portfolio main menu page and a coordinating icon for the CIS front page. Artwork must be original and suitable for use in CIS—otherwise, students should be creative! Suggest that they think about what kind of design they would like for their own CIS Portfolio. Final submissions are due by 5:00 p.m. on March 15, 2011. Please post this CIS portfolio art-work information in your hallways and library and art classrooms, and pass it on to anyone who can get the word out to students who would like to have their art-work seen by CIS users all around Idaho. http://idcis.intocareers.org/materials/cisnews/portfolio_art_criteria.pdf
