Looking for the real-time dimension Since 2008, Naville has used Talend Data Integration to meet the growing needs of data flow interoperability and integration between different applications, including external flows from partners. This operational integration was originally performed in batch mode (meaning via batch processes typically performed overnight). As part of a migration to Oracle eBusiness Suite, an initial accounts department project allowing to lay the foundation of the new integration architecture, Naville developed not only its internal data integration processes, but also external processes in connection with multiple partners. “In view of the results achieved with Talend, we opted to continue working on the interoperability of our information system by adopting more modern and flexible technology that also offers a real-time dimension,” reflects Dominique Chemin, IT Director at Naville. “Capitalizing on the experience gained during our first projects with Talend, we created a prototype with Talend Data Services/ESB. Beyond the real- time component, our goal was to provide a catalog of reusable integration services and to decouple applications in a service- oriented architecture model.” An initial application, developed in 2013, consisted in upgrading an old promotion planning system, allowing to cover all revenue not generated by the “Retail” business. This includes services to advertisers or partners (e.g. advertising space or promotional services). “This first project allowed us to validate the architecture that we will implement across the board in 2014. For example, we plan to deploy a new architecture to take orders for wholesale activities, deploy a customer relationship management application (CRM with gateways to a multitude of applications) and develop a series of new business applications,” explains Dominique Chemin. All these projects are part of an extensive information system upgrade, initiated by the Information Systems Department, which aims to increase our responsiveness while improving our data quality and availability. Another key objective is to increase the scalability of our applications, meaning being able to develop and change them as quickly as possible, based on business demands.” Why Talend? For over a century, Naville has specialized in the distribution and marketing of press and news products in Switzerland, two complementary businesses serving consumers. This subsidiary of LS Distribution Suisse (of which 65% is made up of Lagardère Services and 35% Tamedia), is organized by sector, around four business units: Naville Press distributes 3,000 publications from 18 countries, Naville Service supplies all small local outlets with candy and chocolate, in addition to seasonal, fashion and event-related items, Naville Livre distributes books, tourist guides and comics and Naville Détail controls a chain of 190 outlets operating under several brand names, such as Naville and Relay.

Looking for the real-time dimensionSince 2008, Naville has used Talend Data Integration to meet the growing needs of data flow interoperability and integration between different applications, including external flows from partners. to increase productivity as the number of projects increases. Meanwhile, since Talend is based on standards like Apache and Eclipse, we are guaranteed to easily find expertise available on the market and can rely on the Talend community to find answers to some questions. Talend’s openness is a true guarantee of sustainability.”

Sylvain Priser adds that the Talend Data Services/ESB billing method provides a lot of transparency concerning the projected pricing policy of the vendor, which allows Naville to control its long-term budget.

Finally, the Information Systems Department at Naville emphasizes the quality of the relationship developed between Talend and Naville. “Talend is a real success story for Naville. Historically, we were one of its first clients in Switzerland. When we decided to choose it in 2008, we took risks and today we are reaping the rewards. The relationship with Talend was forged in a win-win fashion: we were given developments and in return we told some service companies about Talend. Lastly, we also introduced its solutions within the Lagardère Group which decided to adopt Talend’s solutions,” he comments.

Agility, readability of flows and availabilityThe benefits sought by Naville were defined in 2008: agility, scalability and sustainability of the information system. “Our goal is to deploy a service-oriented architecture to improve our responsiveness and benefit from interoperability in near real time. Since 2008, we have been aware of our increased

interoperability needs, and this was only confirmed over time. With Talend, we are better equipped to meet these needs every day,” adds Dominique Chemin.

In addition to these strategic objectives, the Information Systems Department at Naville highlights other benefits. “For example, we benefit from the increased readability of our flows and the compatibility between the functional and technical flows, through our process-oriented approach. Through ongoing dialogue with users, interfaces correspond to the reality of the business processes, which is particularly important in an SOA,” concludes Dominique Chemin.

“The deployment of Talend Data Services/ESB has allowed us to significantly improve the quality of the data processed, while increasing its availability. Given our wide variety of partners, interoperability with external systems is a key point of our IT strategy. In the end, this streamlining will eventually prompt a significant decrease in costs, both at the operational level and in terms of IT projects.”
