District 17 District Director Report

District Officers With regret we had the resignation of Administration Manager Angela Boyle who has decided to have a break from Toastmasters and not renew for this renewal period so is unable to continue in the role of Administration Manager and meet the requirements of being a current Toastmaster.

Late last year we lost our energetic Area C3 Area Director Stephen Ermann due to relocation to Melbourne due to job opportunities.

I wish both Anj and Stephen all the best for the future and thank them for their dedication in serving the members of District 17.

Training All the December – February District Club Officer Training (COT) sessions have been completed. The new change to extend the Club Officer role Breakout session was successful as it gave the trainers more time to focus on club officer roles and responsibilities. The is a strong correlation with club officer attendance at COT and the health of the club. Most struggling clubs have poor attendance at COT.

Webmaster and Belmont Club President Rey Lacson has received recognition for his fantastic work with Pathways in producing the videos to help our members. He has been invited by the Regional Advisor Coral McVean to present at the upcoming Region 12 Program Quality Director online meeting.

The TLI Training Group has conducted various workshops to help the members and provided support for the December – February COT sessions.

Education The District Team continues to actively support members and clubs with the Pathways Program. There remains a strong correlation between how many club officers are enrolled in Pathways and how many of that club’s current and new members are enrolled in Pathways.

Well done to all the clubs that have lifted their Pathways Adoption Rate for new members (74.45%) as District 17 is now the highest in the world and second highest for the adoption of members (76.36%) and officers (86.93%). Thank you to all the Pathways Champions that have helped and supported their fellow members to navigate and overcome the challenges in Pathways.

To date we have 9 DTM recipients to date and a few more at the submitting stage. Congratulations to Vijayakumar Vijayaratnam, Gary Goh, Ian Pickens, Michele Naidu, Leonor Ragan, Deon Van

Aswegen, Ross Wilkinson, David Crispin and Sophy Gotsis. We have a few more members working hard to complete their DTM by 30 June 2019.

Membership There has been a struggle attracting and retaining members in some clubs and this reflective of the economic situation with the realignment and redundancies in business world and the WA economy. All clubs officers and the District Team is working hard to support these clubs.

Speech Contests We have had very successful Divisional International and Evaluation Speech Contests with high calibre contestants going through to the District Speech Contests in May. There has been a strong trend in clubs not holding club contests and nominating contestants and a decline in enthusiasm in participation in club, area and division level. There is a region-wide trend.

Clubs Toastminers (Rio Tinto) club was chartered in April 2019 with ABU (Chevron) due to come onboard in April/May 2019.

Our District Team and club coaches are actively work with struggling clubs to help revitalise them and achieve Distinguished status and also create a vibrant and quality club atmosphere. The District Team had an online Club Coach meeting to support our club coaches and would like to thanks our club coaches for their hard work.

Other District 17 2019 Convention

The District 17 2019 Convention will be held on 24-26 May 2019 at the Pagoda Hotel in Como with Ed Tate 2000 World Champion of Public Speaking as our keynote speaker. The dynamic St Georges Toastmaster Club is the host club and have been working hard organising the Convention. I have had regular contact with Ed Tate our Keynote Speaker. We have our very own Lisa Evans and Violet Dhu running workshops. Mark Snow the first DTM in Pathways from District 69 will be presenting 2 Pathways related sessions.

I would like to thank the entire District Team for their hard work and dedication in supporting the members and clubs in our District.

Let’s educate, encourage and empower our members.

District 17 Club Growth Director Report – Western Australia

With only 3 months left focus has been mainly to rescue clubs that are not performing. Paperwork for new club Chevron has been submitted and other potential club in Tom Price is still ongoing. We have 2 clubs Bonanza and Fremantle Quaynote that are not eligible and likely to close. Membership We have 4 clubs in low membership and they have been identified and plans have been assessed and assistance from club coaches and Area Directors has been actioned. Increase in those clubs will see it good standing. Clubs that are yet to meet the minimum numbers are WEscef and Meeting Procedures. These 2 clubs have been monitored and we are confident that numbers will increase shortly. Re energise clubs Aecom and Shell require club coaches whilst Jacobs has club coaches appointed. Talkabout is progressing along nicely with plans now put to action and immediate result has seen an increase in membership. New Clubs Paper work for Chevron has been submitted. Potential clubs are in Tom Price. Potential leads are coming in for the Wanneroo area and meeting is scheduled with the Mayor of Wanneroo before the end of the month. The Watercorp has also shown interest in starting another club in Balcatta, preliminary discussions is with Area Director Keith Cundale who will keep us updated. Other Information/Comments The energy spent on revitalising clubs with low members has been a concern however With a collective Team effort we are starting to see positive signs. So it has been worthwhile. Other positive news comes from Banyandah who has turn their numbers around and is looking towards finishing the year on a high. Draft of the Club Alignment has been completed and will be presented at DECM for discussion and endorsement before submitting it at the DCM for approval. Submitted by Club Growth Director Henry Yau (2018-2019) April 6th 2019

Clubs Overview JusTalk – President moved to Japan but experienced member has stepped into role. Club focus on converting guests has been successful and charter strength again. Regular breakfasts for social networking makes up for no time after club meetings.

City of Perth – Efforts to build membership via Meetup and Website have paid off. Using contests, membership drives and themed meetings to keep guests and members engaged. Regular guests.

Central Communicators – Club worked hard to get to 15 members, 5 above base lost several members at March renewals. Focus on rebuilding membership with dynamic meetings and getting experienced TMs and a club coach to visit to help fill meeting roles, specifically evaluation, and develop new members for club officer roles.

Energy – Club rebuilt to 31 members in Oct and cut down to two meetings a fortnight. Have lost a key club officer with move to Karratha. March renewals down to 8 but more renewing and big membership drive with two roadshow open meetings attended by 70 people. Maree to meet with President and VPE, to review membership activities, Pathways awards and need for club coach.

Page 9: District 17 District Director Reporttoastmastersd17.org/wp-content/uploads/05-District...District Club Officer Training . Based upon Club Officer data It is pleasing to report that

Membership JusTalk – 20 members renewed, now charter strength, 8 new members this TM year so achieved membership award. Normally 1-2 guests/meeting to keep building club strength.

City of Perth – 16 members, 3 guests pending sign-up, on track to be at charter strength by end May, 8 new members this TM year so achieved membership award.

Central Communicators – 8 new members joined this TM year so rebuilt to 15 members but natural attrition at March renewals means membership has dipped to 9. Club is focused getting membership back to 15 to meet DCP requirement of 5 over base of 10 last year. A club coach will help achieve this with a focus on increasing number of guests and converting to members.

Energy – Like many Corporate clubs, Energy has high turnover each renewal. 31 members last term to just 8 at March renewal. Demo meetings held on 10 and 11 April attended by total of 70 people and more than 10 people have followed up keen to join so focusing on getting both club meeting slots back to ~15-20 members each. Expect to be above charter strength by June 30. DCP Goals JusTalk – very committed to DCP. Already Select Distinguished with eight goals achieved so far. Working hard and on track to get another educational award to achieve President’s Distinguished.

City of Perth – very focused on DCP, have 7 goals and just need one more member to be back to charter strength and eligible for DCP. If 20+ members will immediately be Select Distinguished,. Challenge to get two more educational award but will definitely be trying to get President’s Distinguished.

Central Communicators – being a small club with many new members it’s hard to meet DCP criteria. President has worked hard to reinvigorate the club but needs support from a coach to develop other officers and member experience. Have achieved 4 awards but in order to be distinguished must have 15+ members and an educational award. Tough but not impossible to achieve this year.

Energy – common to other corporate clubs not focused on DCP. See value in attending training and completing Pathways projects but not always. Maree to discuss merits of DCP for membership and club recognition.

Club Officer Training JusTalk – Round 1 and 2 achieved

City of Perth - Round 1 and 2 achieved

Central Communicators - Round 1 and 2 achieved

Energy - Round 1 and 2 not achieved. Maree to organise an in-house club officer training session for Woodside and new Chevron officers in late June to start the next year on best foot.

Contests JusTalk – Didn’t hold Intl/Evaluation contest but instead nominated Neerja Ahuja to compete in International at C2 Area Contest

City of Perth - International / Evaluation Contest conducted Mon 4 Feb, Leith Cohoe won Evalaution, Hahn Nguyen won International

Central Communicators – not enough experienced members to run or feel comfortable participating in a contest so no-one nominated. Will work towards that in coming year.

Energy – Lionel Pierson came 2nd in Central Division TT final so progressed to District Final at Convention. Unsure if can attend due to move to Karratha. No contestants in Intl/Eval Area Final.

Area Final – Chevron kindly hosted the C2 Area International and Evaluation Contest on Mon 8 April. Hahn Nyugen won International contest, Leith Cohoe won Evaluation contest and went on to compete in Central Division Contest on Sat 13 April. Leith Cohoe won Evaluation Contest and will compete at District final at Convention. Good luck Leith!!

Page 10: District 17 District Director Reporttoastmastersd17.org/wp-content/uploads/05-District...District Club Officer Training . Based upon Club Officer data It is pleasing to report that

Success Stories JusTalk - First club in Area C2 to lodge April renewals, already Select Distinguished, strong culture of service within the club ranks.

City of Perth – Ian Pickens and Henry Yau are quickly progressing through their Pathway levels setting an excellent example to other members. New members are very enthusiastic and well supported by club officers.

Central Communicators – signed up eight new members this year and attracting more guests.

Energy – planned and promoted two roadshow meetings on Woodside payslips – great exposure for the club! Maree attended and assisted at both meetings with 35 guests at each. Officers report lots of membership enquiries and expect membership to rapidly increase.

Potential New Club/s ABU Toastmasters – 07293526 – new club chartering at Chevron Australia. Charter paperwork submitted this week. 31 paid members including four experienced Toastmasters. Club meeting every Friday lunchtime and, similar to Woodside, will have two groups attending fortnightly (to match nine day working fortnight where ~50% employees are off each Friday).

Already had 7 club meetings and 20 members have now completed their icebreakers. Have had two club officer meetings and club hosted C2 Area Contest even though not eligible to compete. Strong commitment by club officers.

Several members are FIFO so coming in on their R&R. This reinforces interest from FIFO and residential workers so we will focus on building their expertise for a future sister club at Onslow and/or Barrow Island in 2019/2020.

Clubs targeted for revitalization Central Communicators – has done well to rebuild membership in first half of TM year but natural attrition have reduced renewals. Several senior Toastmasters willing to assist with meetings, refer guests and develop club officers. A club coach is needed to assist.

Energy – previously largest club in D17 with 53 members spread across two time slots every fortnight, Wed early morning and Thurs after work. High turnover in membership and loss of some key club officers so most work done by a few key officers. However, very committed to rebuilding club strength and planned and presented two very well attended roadshow meetings. Though Woodside staff are experienced users of company LMS, members prefer traditional manuals over Pathways. Need to explore option of having paper manuals for those who prefer it. May not need club coach if many new members sign up following roadshow meetings but still worthwhile providing coaching in Pathways and Officer roles.

C2 Area Goals Club Visits – Maree has visited City of Perth, Central Communicators, Energy and Chevron and will complete and submit Club visit reports over Easter. Maree scheduled to visit Perth JusTalk on Wed 1 May. On track for all club visits to be completed and reports submitted in early May.

Renewals – all clubs have met paid minimum requirement

DCP – expect a minimum of Distinguished once City of Perth achieves its membership goal. Already have one new paid club to charter this month so not impossible to achieve President’s Distinguished if Central Communicators successful in getting 6 new members and one educational award.

District 17 – Western Australia C4 Area Director Report

Central Division – April 2019

Educational Awards We have 4 clubs in the area with 3 of the clubs doing really well and 1 club ‘Meeting Procedures’ not expected to hit any of the goals as this club has been set up to oversee district meetings and district procedures – this club is a small club made up of experienced Toastmasters. The 3 clubs in the area that are doing well are expected to receive distinguished club status by the end of the TM year

Area Director Visits All unofficial area director visits complete and official area visits for the year complete as well except for Meeting Procedures due to the changing of the meeting times which conflicted with other Toastmaster duties eg. Speechcraft and competitions.

Clubs Overview There are 2 clubs that are for experienced TM (TLI & Meeting Procedures) with the TLI TM club having increase their numbers significantly (8 new members) for the year and have achieved 7 of the goals and expected to complete 9 by the end of the TM year.

The other 2 clubs are both at Curtin Business School and have had new members join throughout the year and expected to hit there 8 new members goal. Curtin GSB (morning) club has unfortunately lost their President due to a new job and unable to make the meetings but Dan Beeson (past President) has stepped in to take over the role. Curtin GSB Sundowners (evening) has a strong leader (Area Director) and strong VPE supporting the President and both clubs have a good spread of new Toastmasters vs more experienced Toastmasters to support the club.

Membership TLI - are on their way to achieving Presidents distinguished with 8 new members thanks to the great work of Leonor Regan.

Meeting Procedures have a lot of work on there plate so I believe that getting more help will benefit this club.

Both of the Curtin Business School Clubs seem to have a healthy number of people in the meetings – Curtin GSB (morning club) need 4 new members to achieve their 2nd membership award and Curtin Sundowners need 2 new members which is likely due to the activity on FB which has increased in the last 6 months.

DCP Goals TLI – have achieved 7 goals so far and expected to submit 2 more awards by the end of June.

Meeting Procedures – I am unsure whether they will meeting any of the goals as they are very busy with trying to organised the online meetings and have a lot of work to do in this space.

Curtin GSB (morning club) 3 goals but expect to achieve at least 6 before end of June. Curtin Sundowners have an impressive 6 goals achieved already so are well on their way to achieving their Distinguished club status. Both presidents believe they will achieve distinguished club status.

Club Officer Training All clubs in the C4 area achieved there training award with at least 4 committee members attending the training sessions held throughout the TM year.

Page 12: District 17 District Director Reporttoastmastersd17.org/wp-content/uploads/05-District...District Club Officer Training . Based upon Club Officer data It is pleasing to report that

Contests Curtin Sundowners had a contestant in all the competitions held throughout the year and Curtin GSB only had contestants in the first half of the year (Humorous and Table Topics).

TLI & Meeting Procedures have nobody they can put forward due to either already competing in another club or not valid to participate.

Success Stories Both the Curtin clubs and TLI are well on their way to achieving distinguished club status.

Potential New Club/s None

Clubs targeted for revitalization Meeting Procedures but it’s a clubs for a specific purpose with experienced Toastmasters who are in multiple clubs.

District 17 Area Director Report – Western Australia

Area E12 - April 2019 Eastern Division

Educational Awards Curtin, Belmont, DTM Pathways, Victoria Park and Como Communicators have demonstrated that they have actively sort membership input in relation to achievement of the club’s educational awards. All are set to achieve award targets.

The Area director is following up with these clubs to look at strategies to move this forward and develop more certainty.

At Como Communicators all new members are working with Pathways. The more senior members are still working on the traditional system to complete their awards. To date they have been working hard to build their club up. In this quarter they have changed their name from Western Founders to Como Communicators. Their venue was proving unsuitable because of parking difficulties. Yesterday 6th April, they held their first meeting at their new venue, which proved to be a hit with members.

Area Director Visits All the second round of club visits have been completed and the Area Director’s Reports have been sent in, with the exception of Como Communicators. This visit was done only yesterday, 6th April and the report will be completed in the next few days.

Clubs Overview

Curtin are doing very well and seem to be well organised. They have a large membership, but on all my visits I have not witnessed a whole quota of members at any one meeting. It may be the nature of the beast that having so many students they may have classes to attend.

Belmont hosted the Area E12 final and did an outstanding job. Many of their members have achieved the goals they set themselves. They are very supportive of each other. At my visit on 26/03/2019 they had seven visitors, many of who promised to join. Must follow this up!

DTM Pathways is an active club of very experienced members who are supportive. They have set up an excellent mentoring program. They are still actively seeking new members who can bring different skills to their club. They have adopted a marketing strategy of club business cards, stating their strengths and what they offer. My visit to DTM Pathways was made on 28th March was completed and the report sent in. I will continue to visit as a member.

Victoria Park have changed their venue due to parking restraints. They now meet at Swansea Street. They have dropped their membership numbers but still remain at charter strength. This was true at my visit on March 26th. I believe that renewals were low and we find that their Membership has dropped considerably. I will follow this up.

Page 15: District 17 District Director Reporttoastmastersd17.org/wp-content/uploads/05-District...District Club Officer Training . Based upon Club Officer data It is pleasing to report that

Como Communicators previously Western Founders, in this last quarter have implemented some of the changes they hope will help them attract new members. They have changed their name and now have a new venue. Their first meeting at their new venue was on 06/04/2019. It was the day of my second round visit and my report will be tabled in the next few days. As a member I will continue to work with the members to attract new members and grow. Members from DTM Pathways have given educationals to help the club move forward. They hope that the changes made will help the club grow.

Membership Curtin and Victoria Park are over charter strength.

Curtin has increased last year’s base. Most of its members are drawn from the University.

Victoria Park seems to have the greatest attrition rate. Unfortunately their members have decreased since my last report.

DTM Pathways have adopted a good strategy to help gain new members through marketing and mentoring.

Como Communicators have a new name and venue. By updating their media outlets as well as the new name and venue they hope to promote the ethos of the club to attract possible future members.

Belmont has attracted new members and appears to be slowly but surely be increasing in attracting and keeping their members.

DCP Goals To date all the clubs gave at least achieved Distinguished Status. Belmont - 5 goals met. DTM Pathways - 7 goals met. Como Communicators - 7 goals met. Curtin 5 - goals met. Victoria Park - 8 goals met. Belmont, Como Communicators and DTM Pathways May have their President’s Distinguished Status hampered due to low membership numbers.

Club Officer Training All clubs had at least four offers attending the training sessions in February

Contests The Area E12 International and Evaluation Contest was hosted by Belmont. The two contestants from Area E12 did us proud at the Eastern Division Contest and will be going on to represent the Eastern Division at the Convention in May. I am very proud to have them represent Area E12. I wish them all the best of luck and will be in attendance to cheer them on.

Eastern Division April 2019

Educational Awards While Ellenbrook, Karratha and WA Speakers Bureau Clubs’ Success Plans state their goals to complete awards in both educational programs, there have been few achieved by the latter two clubs.

Awards credited to date are: Ellenbrook - 7 Traditional Awards and 5 Pathways Awards. They have been achieved by 6 members. Their new members are working on Pathways but only one has awards credited so far.

WA Speakers Bureau – no awards. Karratha – 1 CC award. Only 2 members are Pathways enrolled.

Area Director Visits I have visited Ellenbrook a number of times this year to assist with contests and for my official visit. Attendance is around 16 with visitors at each meeting. My official visit on March 6th 2019 was followed by a visit on March 20th to conduct the Area Contest as part of their weekly meeting.

My official visit to WA Speakers Bureau is planned for their April 16th meeting. 2018. Contact with the members has been via email and largely related to the recent club and area contests. Unfortunately, the club was unable to nominate a contestant for either the International Speech or Evaluation Area Contests.

I made my official visit to Karratha on February 26th. The meeting was attended by only four members. The committee had met to formulate and action plan to reenergise the club and this was discussed. The club is facing a number of challenges including finding an affordable venue, and have changed their meeting day to better suit members.

Clubs Overview WA Speakers Bureau. Membership remains steady at 11 and VPM actively promotes the club.

Members have the common purpose of developing their speaking skills to take on public speaking roles in the wider community. The meetings are structured to allow for longer “key note” speeches. Group evaluations are very effective. Members can apply to be graded by a panel of evaluators with the aim to be recognised as qualified to speak at public events.

Ellenbrook Club meets weekly with an average attendance of 17 – 20. The meetings are vibrant and fun, with a combination of prepared speeches and impromptu speaking opportunities. New members are encouraged to give their Icebreaker Speeches within the first few weeks. Attention is paid to meeting protocol and evaluations are effective. Forward planning is a challenge but the committee is working together to ensure meeting roles are filled and members notified in a timely manner.

Karratha Club has struggled to hold effective meetings. A core of 4 members have continued to meet, usually at a member’s home as the venue is no longer available. They are the only renewals

An Open House was held in March, but did not attract the new members they hoped for. However, they have had a number of enquiries since and are committed to continuing.

The committee members have discussed the viability of the club, but plan to book a venue for 3 months so that meetings can be held and prospective members can visit.

Page 19: District 17 District Director Reporttoastmastersd17.org/wp-content/uploads/05-District...District Club Officer Training . Based upon Club Officer data It is pleasing to report that

Membership WA Speakers Bureau has signed on 6 new members and now has a membership of 11. The VPM networks with Toastmasters in D17, and initiates and follow up leads. Most current members belong to more than one club and the level of member experience is varied.

Ellenbrook currently has a membership of 24 which is down from 29 since renewals. They have signed on 14 new members since July 2018. Their website and word of mouth bring in most of their visitors and prospective members. There is a good balance of long term experienced members and new members, with a wide age range, through predominately young.

Karratha has only 4 active members but hope to recruit some past members and new members by the end of April. They are struggling to provide a regular meeting place and an effective meeting, so have not been able to capitalise on enquiries from people interested in attending.

DCP Goals At this stage, Ellenbrook has achieved 10 goals – including 7 educational goals. WA Speakers Bureau has 2 goals and Karratha one.

Ellenbrook’s Club Success Plan indicates that further educational awards will be achieved but I believe not all Pathways awards already achieved have been lodged.

WA Speakers Bureau has 2 goals: Goal 7: 4 new members and Goal 9: COT attendance.

Karratha has achieved Goal 9 – COT attendance.

Contests Neither Karratha Club nor WA Speakers Bureau held a contest or were able to nominate contestants.

Ellenbrook held a successful club contest night and the winners progressed to Area level.

The Area E15 Contest planned for March 16th did not take place. Instead, the Area International Speech Contests were conducted at Ellenbrook Club with correct observance of rules and timing requirements. The winners, Todd Halvorson and Gaye O’Loghlen progressed to the Eastern Division Contest and competed at the finals on Saturday March 30th 2019.

Success Stories Potential New Club/s None at this stage.

Clubs targeted for revitalization Karratha is at risk. The club officers considered discontinuing as a club but agreed to renew the four to keep the club viable until all options can be considered.

They have since resolved to continue for at least 3 months, encouraged by interest from prospective and past members.

Other Information/Comments None.

Area Final was held at the new venue of Stirling Club in Yokine.

N24 Area Director – has completed the second round of visits to clubs. AD has submitted report online and completed report for Young Guns, Noranda, Maylands and Banyandah. Still to be completed is Highgate.

N25 Area Director – Area Director had informal and formal visits to all clubs in the Area. Area Director report aimed to be submitted online by end of April.

Clubs Overview Area N21 – Provide a fun and creative environment in which members can challenge themselves to develop communication and leadership skills. Some clubs are struggling to attain DCP goals. Other clubs are going well. Communication with club officers has been good and responses received promptly.

Area N22 - Two coaches has been assigned to UWA College Row to help revitalized the club. Visitors come and go and had a few converted. St Georges is a good club with experienced members and some great new members coming through. Their committee has proactive approach and their club is a co-chair in the D17 Convention

Area N23 – Pressing issue is still the revitalisation of Talkabout. AD has been active in club meetings and now implementing the strategies in placed to revitalise the club. In terms of increase social media presence, the club is now active with “Meet Up” and this resulting in a steady flow of visitors to the Club. Roster of supporters from other clubs has helped greatly to increase the level of energy in club meetings.

Area N25 - Area Director advised all clubs meeting at Tom Dadour are struggling with membership numbers. All clubs lost a few members at renewal time. The reason for members not renewing has been typically work related and not able to make it to meetings, which is out of the control of the Club. Banksia Speakers are considering having a club coach if member renewals are low. Peter Harrison has been appointed coach to Dynamics Speakers as it has been struggling to increase its membership number. Inspiring Speakers have a fun environment overall though could have more 5 members to reach their Distinguish status.

Membership Clubs in Area N21 are looking at ways to encourage visitors to become members and increase membership. Retaining experienced members can be a challenge.

Area N23 – Stirling and Mount Hawthorn will remain equal to or greater than 20 members. Desperados should achieve their net growth of 4. Water Corp is on track to get +4 for the year. Even Talkabout is getting one or two new members.

Area N25 - Though new members join in the clubs, existing members leaving the club for personal reasons offset this.

Clubs targeted for revitalization Talkabout – Club coach has been assigned. Revitalization Plan has been created and currently being implemented. AD N23 following up on “Roster” of volunteer visitors and this list is still growing thanks to the efforts of N23 Club Presidents and other ND Area Directors. Improvements in the social media presence are also in place but this will take time to create results. Meet Up has been set up. AD N23 is not expecting a major turnaround before the end of the TM year, but the Club will be stronger than at the start of the year.

UWA Row College – Two club coaches has been assigned to help the Club increase its membership. Recent visitors have been converted to members.

Educational Awards Clubs are progressing with their educational reports and are committed to their DCP program.

Area Director Visits I am currently arranging my 2nd round of official visits. So far visits to Northern Gourmet (11 April), Butler (15 April) and Sandgropers (6 May) have been confirmed. Currambine and Northern Lights are in the process of being arranged. I aim to have all my reports submitted before the deadline of 31 May 2019. Clubs Overview The clubs in Area N21 on the whole are going well and provide a fun and creative environment in which members can challenge themselves and develop communication and leadership skills. Some clubs are a little weak in following the DCP goals. Communication with club officers has been good and responses received promptly. Membership Membership appears to be somewhat of an issue for some of the clubs. Retaining long standing members can be a problem, as is attracting new members. DCP Goals Clubs are making progress towards their DCP goals. Club Officer Training Most of the clubs achieved the minimum requirement of club officers attending TLI/COT. Contests All the contests have been held, as well as the N21 Area Finals. Other information/comments Submitted by Barbara Coles Area Director N21

District 17 Western Australia Area Director Report

Northern Division, Area N23 April 2019 Educational Awards To date, 9 communication and leadership awards have been lodged under the Traditional route. Disappointingly, only 2 awards have been lodged in this period under Pathways. I am aware that there is a great deal of activity underway in all of the Clubs and that many potential PW awards are ‘work-in-progress’. These additional awards should be lodged within a month or so. I also met with the Presidents of Water Corp and Talkabout Clubs outside of the usual meetings. Clubs Overview The most pressing issue in the Area continues to be the need to revitalise Talkabout Club. I have taken part in every Club meeting this year and also attended Committee meetings and “Revitalisation” meetings. It is very encouraging that strategies developed at the end of 2018 are beginning to generate positive results: Membership growth drive through improved use of social media. The Club is now active with

“Meet Up” and this is resulting in a steady flow of visitors to the Club. So far this year it has resulted in two additional members signing up. Talkabout Club is now back in “good standing” and I am confident that it will regain forward momentum before the end of the year.

Creation of a ‘Roster’ of supporters from other Clubs. This has helped to greatly increase the level of energy in Club meetings - which then has a positive impact on any visitors and guests. Of particular note were the contributions of Beatrice Yong (Water Corp) who gave an educational from the Club Success series as part of her Advanced Leadership Award and Kym Godfrey (President of Banyandah Club) who gave an excellent speech on marketing strategies for club growth as part of her Pathways L3 assignment.

With the exception of Talkabout Club, the other four Clubs in N23 should be able to reach a minimum of 5 DCP points by the end of the TM year (and Distinguished status if membership goals are reached.) Mount Hawthorn is on track to achieve 9/10 DCP Goals. Club Officer Training The lack of involvement from Stirling Club in Round 2 of COT was a surprise and disappointment, as was the continuing difficulty in getting participation from DESperados. Both Clubs had indicated that the Club Officers would be attending one of the sessions, but last minute changes of plan caused them to NOT take part after all. Contests Contests were successfully staged at Mount Hawthorn and Stirling Clubs. These two clubs put forward their winners and Water Corporation and DESperados nominated ‘Champions’ for the N23 Area final which took place on 20th March. A large audience were at Yokine Community Centre - the new meeting venue for Stirling Club, who were the hosts this time around. District 17 Area Director Report – Western Australia

Area 25 – 02 April 2019 Northern Division Area Director Visits Subsequent to the submission of the last Area Visit Report, I have had informal with four of the five clubs, with informal visits planned for all clubs over the next week, and formal visits over the next three weeks for all clubs. Targeting submission of all Area Visit Reports by the end of April. Clubs Overview All the clubs lost a number of members with the recent renewal, typically having 4 or members not renew their membership. While membership retention is an issue, the reasons for members not renewing have typically been work related and no longer being able to make the time commitment to the Club or Toastmasters, which is usually outside of the control of the Club. Aspire has done well with new members to replace the lost members but the other clubs will getting new members have had an overall reduction in numbers. All Clubs are well run and have fun and productive meetings. The main issue for the Clubs is increasing membership numbers, either not being able to attract enough visitors or not being able to convert them to members in sufficient numbers. Three of the Clubs meet at the Tom Dadour Community Centre in Subiaco, on various nights of the week. Dynamic Speakers have been struggling to increase membership numbers and Peter Harrison was recently appointed as a Club Coach to assist them with re-building. Banksia Speakers are going ok though struggling with overall membership numbers. Their Committee has developed a plan to work on the issue and subject to their actual numbers after renewals will consider getting a Club Coach. Inspiring Speakers are doing well in most areas except for overall membership numbers, though they had 2 new members sign up at their meeting this week. Membership As noted above, membership numbers is an issue for all clubs. Retention of club members is ok for factors directly in control of the club with most loss of members being due to work changes or being unable to commit due to work factors. All clubs have achieved a number of new members though not insufficient numbers to have a large increase in numbers. Educational Awards Three of the five clubs have lodged multiple educational awards and achieved three or four points for those awards. Banksia have lodged one educational award but not yet achieved a point for the award. Gourmet Guns N Roses have not yet lodged any awards but have a number of members who are close to completing Pathways Levels.

• Problems in the clubs not identified early. Future Area Directors and Division Directors would benefit from pointers on how to identify and analyse issues during club visits

• Club leaders do not always show leadership either because of skill or will

• Identify senior members who may be an obstacle to the progress of the club

• Review DECM to meet training needs of the Area Directors

• Make clear to Area Directors on time commitment prior to appointment to ensure ther is an agreed commitment to participation.

DCP Goals All the Clubs have achieved a minimum of 2 goals to date with Aspire & Dynamic Speakers reaching 7 goals and Inspiring Speakers reaching 5 goals. All clubs have a Club Success plan and are working towards achieved Distinguished Club status as a minimum, though this will be impacted by achievement of membership numbers. Aspire has achieved Select Distinguished and will likely achieve Presidents Distinguished. Club Officer Training All clubs had the required numbers or more at first round of training and 3 Clubs had sufficient numbers attend the second round but Banksia & Inspiring Speakers only had 3 officers attend the second round. Contests All the clubs held contests or nominated a contestant for the Area Contest with the exception of Gourmet Guns N Roses. Raffaele Ragni from Dynamic Speakers was second in the International Contest at the Northern Division. Success Stories Inspiring Speakers signing up 2 new members in the last few days of March to make sure they got the minimum number of renewals. Raffaele Ragni from Dynamic Speaker placing second in the Division Contest having been a member of Toastmasters for less than 2 years. Other Information/Comments Nil. District 17 – Western Australia S31 Area Director Report

• Canning Vale – Already at President’s Distinguished 30 April payment • CIL – well underway to achieving President’s Distinguished 20 April Payments • Southern River – Will achieve President’s Distinguished – has achieved DCP points,

and has received payments for 20 members • Armadale – Should achieve Presidents Distinguished, 10 DCP goals, just need to

make their member payments • Gosnells – on the verge of collapse. Have lost Treasurer and Secretary recently, VPE

is resigning / leaving club at then end of June; current president wants to step down and is not interested in remaining on committee. Currently have 2 paid members. No one (apart from Cathy Kunzel – coach) seems interested in doing anything to keep club alive – Unless the current membership make a conscious decision to invest their time and efforts into reviving this club, it is difficult to see it surviving. Successes: Running an Evaluation Relay around the clubs in the next few weeks 2 members from each club are going to visit another nominated club in the area to do evaluations. This is being organised by Noor Talpur. Hoping to achieve:

• Sharing of knowledge around area • Improving the quality of evaluations in area • Encouraging (and rewarding) members to visit other clubs • Asking host clubs to provide evaluation mentors for their visitors for the

evening • Giving Noor a chance to get to know the clubs in the area as he has

nominated to be Area Director next year. Jenny de Wind Area S31 Director

Bonanza, Cockburn , Quaynote, Victoria Quay and Fremantle Gourmet Cockburn – 12 members They are a vibrant club and are on the up! Steady membership growth. Positive growth, 3 new members which balances out the attrition of non-renewing members. Congratulations to Sophie Gotsis, Club coach and their President Chandrika Akilian. Their biggest challenge in the next few months is to convince some new members to be Club Officers to revitalise the ideas and energy. Quaynote – 0 Members Voted to close. I put in a lot of effort and time but I think it was a foregone conclusion. Not all members moved across to VicQuay. Might be worth a personal call to see if I can match members with a new club rather than let them go completely from the TM fold. Vic Quay – 21 Members Membership numbers look healthy enough but the club could easily slide if not closely watched and monitored. Fremantle Gourmet – 18 members Will hold steady – possibility of a few more on the cusp of signing Bonanza – No response from company director. Consider this club closed and gone. Near Distinguished Clubs: 1. Murdoch Southsiders (10 DCP points already, 2 more members needed) 2. Kenwick Toastmasters (5 DCP points already, 4 more members needed. Expect a miracle

from this 6-month-old club by June-2019) 3. Willetton Toastmasters (10 DCP points already, 9 more members needed)

Clubs Needs Attention: • Cannington Communicators: Educational Awards

a. So far Cannington Communicators have not submitted a single educational award (from July-2018 to March-2019)

b. As pointed out in my last DECM report, member progress tracking from both member side and club side is not at the best, especially with Pathways.

c. Other issue is this is a fortnightly club which has only 2 speaking slots a meeting. So, it makes harder for members to progress.

d. I have raised this issue in both my reports and provided suggestions as well. Club president and VPE agreed to look into it.

e. Only 8 member renewals so far.

Clubs Overview All clubs hold positive meetings. They are working hard to attract visitors and turn them into members. All the clubs have up to date platforms on social media.

Membership There are two sets of figures on the TMI website and unsure as to which is the most accurate.

Mandjar has 9 members (reports) and 15 (dashboard). They have achieved the goal of 4 new members and working towards the second goal of 4 new members. At the moment they are below the required net growth number. Six members have not renewed to date and these are being followed up by the committee.

Bunbury has 18 members (reports) and 24 (dashboard). They have achieved the two goals of 4 plus 4 new members. At the moment they are below the net growth number. Seven members have not renewed to date. The main reasons for non-renewal have been work commitments and relocation interstate.

Jetty has 15 members on reports and the dashboard. They have achieved the goal of 4 new members and working towards the second goal of 4 new members. Work commitments have prevented the non-renewal of one member who is hopeful of renewing, albeit late.

Distinguished Club Program Goals Mandjar has achieved 4 goals and are hopeful of registering one more CC to achieve 5 goals. At present their membership numbers do not allow them to be recognised for this achievement.

Bunbury has achieved 6 goals and are hopeful of registering one more Level 3 to achieve 7 goals. At present their membership numbers do not allow them to be recognised for this achievement.

District 17 Area Director Report – Western Australia

Area S35 7 April 2019 Southern Division The report below is a summary of the clubs progress for S35. Area Governor Visits The dates below are of the visits conducted year for 2018/19

Kwinana TM July 3 and 31.and 6 Feb 19 Rockingham TM July 4, August 1, 15, 29.and 9 Jan 19 Applecross TM July 11 and 22. - 6 and 20 Feb 19 Fremantle Gateway TM July 10 , 21 and 26 Feb 19 Wescef (Corporate Club) July 13 and 27

Clubs Over view : Problem: The biggest behaviour pattern that is of concern, Is why does competition part of the year, presents lack of interest? Action: Club Success Plan have a component where individual Goals and Promotion should include participation in competitions( No difference to a club meeting speech) Strategies to promote competitions as a positive experience to grow, no different than a normal club meeting. E.g. Encourage a normal club speech to build, leading up to competition, so more confidence is building along the way.

Kwinana TM The club was TM club of the year and Presidents Distinguished last year but when you look at the dashboard they have only 3 DCP point. A Concern why such a big difference. The VPE the club has found areas to improve on

• Loss of experienced members, • newer members are not as regular at meetings • hard to maintain good consistent member attendance for each meeting. • Finding future committee members

Actions – TM to provide a support service where clubs can call on visitors that can help participate a club meetings, to encourage and build club moral and show standards. Kwinana continues to fare well, anticipate to finish a Distinguished club. Strong fortnightly club

Rockingham TM

Since Leon 0’Brien has been appointed the club coach, the club has totally transformed. At the start of the year, they were struggling, but now show 8 points on the DCP and finish with Select Distinguish. Amazing to see Leon’s passion to promote and maintain high TM standards. Strong fortnightly club

Applecross TM

Applecross has a very competent leadership team. Strong club with a continuous supply of new membership. Preforms well, great support for me when arranging competitions. Membership is good, Strong fortnightly club

Fremantle Gateway TM

Strong vibrant club with great leadership. Club preforms well at club meetings. Strong membership Problem: No club competition or nomination for International and Evaluation. Action: Promotion of competitions to be throughout the year, to reduce peoples anxiety, workshops to Grow a speech for a competition.

Wescef (Corporate Club)

The club is part of the Wesfarmers group, a corporate club. Amazing facilities and initiative by company to use TM to educate employees. Problem: The club doesn’t participate in the DCP system. Difficult to find people to help and participate at competition level. Isolation from rest of TM community. Potential for club to eventual close from lack of interest. Actions: Does a club, not following the TM program actually provide value? The club needs support to help run club meetings from TM. Provide guest speeches and evaluations to show standards. Club Success Plan have a component where individual Goals and Promotion should include participation in competitions Club has been reminded to pay renewals, at the moment the club is not in good standings. Will be fixed ASAP.
