OneofthemostimportantfunctionsoftheDistrictAttorneyistomaintaintheintegrityofourgovernmentandrootoutpoliticalcorruption.Ihaveworkedonelectionfraudandpublicintegritycasesandunderstandthesigni�canceofthisrole.IbelieveintheimportanceofanindependentDistrictAttorney.Idonothavepoliticalendorsements.Ihaveendorsementsfromcommunityleaders,lawyers(bothprosecutorsanddefenseattorneys),individualsinlawenforcement,andothers.IammostproudofmyendorsementsfromAlamedaDistrictAttorneyNancyO’MalleyandrenownedforensicscientistDr.HenryLee.IamalsoproudofmyendorsementsfromHarrySternandPeterFurst,twoexperienceddefenseattorneyswhoIhaveopposedinveryemotionallychargedtrials,bothofwhichIgotguiltyverdicts.

Inconcept,Idosupportopeningsupervisedconsumptionservices,thoughtherealityisthatwithoutsign-off(orapathy)fromthefederalgovernment,itisnotlikelytocometofruitioninSanFrancisco.Inthemeanwhile,Ithinkweshouldinvestmoreinsocialworkersmakingcontactwithindividualsopenlyusingdrugsonthestreettointervene.Ifthefederalgovernment,whetherthroughanagencyliketheIRSortheUSAttorney'sO�ce,soughttoseizepropertyofanon-pro�torthreatenthetaxexemptstatusofanon-pro�thostingasafeconsumptionsite,theDA'sO�cewouldnothavestandingtointervene.IfitwastheCity'sproperty,itwouldbetheprovinceoftheCityAttorneytodefendagainstsuchanaction.

ToreducetheSFjailpopulation,Iwillprioritizeearlyinterventionfor�rst-timeoffensesbyofferingdiversionsoutofthecriminaljusticesystem,stoprepeatoffenseswithdeterrentsentencingandintensivemonitoringonprobation,andensureSanFranciscojobsprogramsareapartofrehabilitationandavailabletothosewhocommitminoroffensesuponreentry.Actuallyprosecutingdrugcrimesandgettingdrugdealersoffthestreetandintoprogramstopreventrepeatoffenseswillpositivelyimpactourmostvulnerableneighborhoods.SanFranciscosendsthesecondlowestnumberofpeopletostateprisonoutofthe58countiesinCalifornia.Areductioninracialdisparitiesnowinthestateprisonsystemrequiresacomprehensivelookatwherethosedisparitiesaremostpronounced.InSanFrancisco,weneedtohavegreaterinvestmentattheverybasiclevelsofoursocietytoensurechildrenarehoused,fed,educated,andenriched;thatpeoplehaveemploymentopportunitiesandjobtrainingalongwithjobsthathavelivingwages;andthatpeoplewhocommitcrimesaregivenopportunitiestobedivertedoutofthecriminaljusticesystemorhaveachancetoshowrehabilitation.
Thecriminaljusticesystemcanaddresshomelessnessbybetterscreeningandprotectingvictimsofcrimesfromthecollateralconsequencesofbeingavictimofcrime.Inthelastpointintimesurvey,31%ofallrespondentsreportedexperiencingdomesticviolencesometimeintheirlifetime.Therewasnoquestionregardingothertypesofviolentcrimeorpropertycrime,butbasedonthedomesticviolencestatisticalone,therecouldbesomegainsingreatervictimservicesaroundhousing.

AsaDeputyDistrictAttorney,everytimeIwalkintocourt,IamarepresentativeForthePeople.Thejobofaprosecutorisapublictrust,andIneverforgetthat.That'swhyIamrunningforDistrictAttorneyoftheCityandCountyofSanFrancisco.IbelieveourDistrictAttorneyisresponsibleforprotectingallSanFranciscans,andI’mreadytodothatondayone.For18years,I’vebeenaprosecutorinSanFranciscoandAlamedaCounties,andfortheAttorneyGeneraloftheStateofCalifornia.I’vehandledthousandsofcasesinStateandFederalcourts,fromdomesticviolencetopubliccorruptiontopolicemisconduct.Today,weseeonSanFrancisco’sstreetsthatthingsarenotworking.IknowwheretheproblemsareinourD.A.’sO�ceandourjusticesystem,andhowwecan�xthem.Wedonotneedtoacceptthefalsechoicebetweenprotectingourcommunityandhonoringourprogressivevalues.Iknowwecandoboth,andmycommunity-centeredapproachtocriminaljusticewillgetusthere.Iknowhowto�xtheDA’so�cebecauseI’veworkedthereandexperienced�rst-handwhatisandisnotworking.IhavethemostcourtroomexperienceofanycandidateforDistrictAttorney.IworkedasaprosecutorintheSanFranciscoDistrictAttorney’sO�ceforoveradecade,prosecutingdomesticviolencecases,protectingconsumers,andupholdingpublicintegritybyprosecutingpolicemisconduct,fraud,andembezzlement.IalsomentoreddozensofSanFranciscoprosecutors,andIamastatewideleaderonlegalethicsandconsumerprotectionissues.Today,Ileadstatewideteamsofattorneysincomplexinvestigationsandprosecutions,includingwhistleblowercasesandlargemulti-nationalcompaniesintechnology,energy,andpharmaceuticalsectors.I’velivedinSanFranciscoforaslongasI’vebeenapublicservant.AsaSanFranciscomotherandapersondeeplyinvolvedinourcommunity,Iknowwecanshapeourcriminaljusticesystemtobefairerwithoutsacri�cingpublicsafety.Ihavealwaysbeenacivic-mindedperson,andneverseriouslythoughtaboutrunningforpublico�ceuntilrecently.“Politicsasusual”hasdonemuchtounderminepeople’strustinourgovernmentandtokeepindependent-mindedcandidatesoutofelectedo�ce.I’mrunningbecauseweneedanexperienced,independentDistrictAttorneytoprotectourcommunity,torebuildrelationshipsbetweentheO�ceandlawenforcementpartners,andtounconditionallybeaccountabletoonlythePeopleofthisCity,notpoliticiansandoutsideinterestgroups.
