Rita, John and I were deeply touched by what we sawand can I say we are going to have to dig deep bothwith our human resources and capital. I am proud asyour District Governor to say that the Lions in theaffected areas are working very hard as a team andalso the great support shown throughout our districtand Lions International. The very best thing is thatthere has been no loss of life and the spirit of Lionscontinues with – WE SERVE. There has been a lot ofstructural damage to homes and business’, the Lion’sDen in Cardwell is still standing however there is sminor roof damage and all the roller doors have beenblown in. The Lions there are working very hardvolunteering and helping wherever they are mostneeded and will certainly need the support of theirDistrict in the coming months.

Wespoke at length at how we could assist the area. It wasdecided that a committee bPresidents of the affected areas so as to capture theissues for each community and work out a wayforward. InCardwell we were able to catch up with Neville andKath Goggi and they were very busy helping theircommunity and we were unable to catch up with clubsecretary Caroline Dwyer as she wcommunity.

I would ask when you donate to the appeal if you couldlet us set the direction of where the money is usedbecause it would be a pity for one area to be staof money because it is not widely known or small insize.

CYCLONE YASI – THE RECOVERY COMMENCES

For those who bore the full force of Cyclone Yasi, I donot need to expand on the devastation caused by thatmonster of a storm to hit our beautiful NorthQueensland area, with the effects felt right out to theNT border and indeed has caused further floodingdown as far as Victoria. To those who have suffereddamage to your homes and property, our thoughts andprayers are with you as you work through this recoveryperiod.

There has already been very widespread support fromthe Lions of our District to assist in the effort to restoreour communities back to a semblance of normality, and for that I thank you. Many have assisted incleanups – both as individuals helping neighbours andfriends, and as organised groups of Lions in your Clubor Zone. And can I also please acknowledge theefforts of those Lions in the worst hit areas who haveput their own needs on hold while they assistedimmediately in the recovery effort – whether it wascooking meals at the Cardwell Coast Guard,Community Barbecues in Cardwell, Tully, MissionBeach, Curramine Beach or providing support in otherareas– the list goes on and on. Thank You All. Aspecial thank you must go to Zone Chairperson IreneBraddick who has worked tirelessly over this initialperiod to co-ordinate support, and to also conductmany of the activities in her Zone.

It is pleasing also to note the response to my call for“Feet on The Street” over the weekend 19/20February, with many Lions travelling from as far awayas Bowen and Mareeba to join in the effort to restorepeoples yards and help remove rubbish in the worst hitareas of Cardwell, Tully, Mission Beach andsurrounds. I know the people who have been helpedare most appreciative of your efforts, and the workbeing done by Lions. Thank you to our ClubPresidents who helped co-ordinate activities in theirlocal areas, and to those Lions who “answered theCall”. Well Done - but there is still much more to do!

We have received many offers of donated goods pluscash from Clubs both within our District and down

South. I am currently working closely with the DisasterRecovery Co-ordinators in both Hinchinbrook andCassowary Coast Councils to facilitate the receipt ofgoods into their depots, and also now to get them outto the people who need them most. And we will beassisting with some cash donations going forwardonce individual needs have been determined. Aspecial mention also to Zone Chairperson JohnSpooner and his team in Cairns who have done atremendous job in conducting their appeal for goods –with these now in process of being on-forwarded.

So how can you and your club help now? I know thatthere is still much to do on the ground, and I will beworking with the Club Presidents and ZoneChairpersons to facilitate further support as it isneeded. And if you have not yet done so, a cashdonation to Cabinet Treasurer Ed would also be mostwelcome (Please let Lion Ed know if the funds are togo to the District’s appeal, or to a particular area orClub).

A great example of financial support from afar hascome from our very own Tabubil Lions Club in PNG.The club quickly organised a fund raising dinner andcharity auction to raise funds for the appeal. From thiscommunity of just 2,000 people, a total of Kina$20,000was raised with the support of local business whodonated goods to the auction. But even moreremarkable, OK TEDI MINING then sponsored ClubSecretary Charles to fly to Cairns so that he could seefirst- hand the devastation and report back to thecommunity on how their donation would make adifference. And when he passed across the cheque toDG Pat for AUS$7,142 (the Kina20,000 equivalent)plus a painting from local artist, Lion and Town MayorBobby Kain for us to raffle to raise further funds, ourDG was gobsmacked and one of the rare occasions Ihave seen him stuck for words!! Well done TabubilLions, and thank You.

And finally to our Lions Family in Q2, in terms of theLions Code of Ethics, please continue to give freely ofyour time, labour and means to aid others in thecommunity less fortunate than you or I.Warm RegardsIPDG JohnCyclone Yasi Recovery Coordinator

A cyclone hit a North Queensland farmhouse justbefore dawn one morning. It tore off the roof, andpicked up the beds on which the farmer and his wifewere sleeping. By some miracle, the cyclone set themdown unharmed over the next hill. The wife was sobbing uncontrollably. "Don't be scared,Mary," her husband said. "We're not hurt."Mary continued to cry. This month’s Training SessionFrom: MERLOT

Retention Challenge - Focus on Club Dynamics

Research has shown that 50% of our new membersdrop out within the first three years. Fortunately, weknow the main reasons why:

Lengthy/boring meetings Club cliques and politics Lack of meaningful involvement Lack of Cooperation (working together)

We have addressed these four critical areas of theRetention Challenge across recent Northern Lionseditions. This is the final Instalment in thisRetention Training Exercise

Retention Challenge

Negative cliques and club politics can leavemembers feeling left out and resentful. It is one ofthe chief reasons members drop out of their clubs.

Cliques very typically form in large groups, and not allcliques are inherently “bad.” People will naturallygravitate to those that they feel comfortable with, orthat they have known for a long time. However, ifthese sub-groups are making some members feel leftout, or are affecting club functioning, they aredetrimental to your club.

Strategies for handling Cliques and Politics

Set the Tone: As club president, you have the abilityto set the tone for the club. How you manage the clubwill have an effect on how both current and newmembers will feel about being involved.

Building Your Team: Making your club into acohesive, productive team will help keep membersinterested, involved, and meet your club’s servicegoals. Club meetings are a good opportunity for theteam to connect and learn more about one another, which is why it is important that meetings be wellattended, interesting and productive.

Keeping Things Fresh: Long-standing, ingrainedcliques often will form in clubs when things remain thesame year after year. To keep club atmosphere freshfor members, rotate committee members wherepossible to give people new opportunities. Not only willyou be giving members a chance to try somethingnew, the committees themselves will benefit from freshperspectives.

Making New Members Feel Welcome: Many clubsdo a great job warmly welcoming new members intotheir club, but after the initial introductions, don’t followup with members to make them feel part of the club. Most new members need a period of nurturing to reallyfeel a part of the club – both socially and in terms oftheir involvement.

New Members Make Great Greeters: Have newmembers serve as greeters for club functions for thefirst several weeks of their membership. It’s a greatway for them to meet all club members. A good idea isto periodically solicit feedback from new membersregarding their orientation into the club and ask them ifthey have any suggestions to improve theorientation/involvement process.

Retention is for All Members: While making surenew members feel welcomed, involved andcomfortable, it is important to remember long-termmembers. Let long-time members know that theircontinued membership is important by periodicallyasking them if they are still satisfied with the club.

Kudos to Club Members: Give praise often to clubmembers for a job well done, a good idea or an effortbeyond the call of duty. A simple “thank you” in front ofthe entire club will go a long way in building members'pride.

Make it Fun: Before a club meeting begins, select amember to be the “Secret Lion.” In a clique-free clubeveryone mingles freely and will eventually meet theSecret Lion. As the meeting nears a close, you ask theSecret Lion to identify those members who nevermade contact, and encourage the Tail Twister tohumorously levy a fine.

Getting Back to Basics: People become Lions formany reasons, but common to all is the desire to helpthose in need. If politics are interfering with theefficient functioning of your club and preventing youfrom meeting your club’s service goals, then you arenot fulfilling the core objective of the association.

Be a Strong Leader: Being a strong leader doesn’tmean authoritarian and heavy-handed, but rather, fair,open-minded and decisive. If politics are making ittough for your club to make decisions, you shouldexercise your authority to navigate through theprocess.

Open communication: Open communication is vitalto the success of a team. It is important for membersto feel like they have an open forum to discusstroubling issues and handle disputes.

A Final Note…Retaining members is a critical, ongoing process. Each year, the dynamics of a club change. Sometimesthese changes are subtle, with the effects not easilyrecognizable. Other changes will be obvious. Keepyour observation skills honed and handle challengesas they occur.Good luck as you continue to make changes to yourclub that will not only help retain members, but willalso improve the functioning of your club.

LCIF – SUPPORT IN TIME OF NEED

The Lions Clubs International Foundation over theyears has supported the recovery efforts of manydisasters right around the world, and this year is nodifferent, with Emergency Grants of US$10,000 eachmade to our three fellow Q Districts to help them intheir work following the devastating floods downSouth. In the last 2 months I have also applied to LCIFfor grants as follows:-

$10,000 Emergency Grant for our Districtfollowing Cyclone Yasi

$75,000 Standard Grant to enable us tocontinue the renewal work at Camp Kanga –much of which has had to be carried outfollowing Cyclone Ului last year.

Very shortly we while know the results of theseapplications.

So, you may be asking, how can your Club assist inthe recovery following Cyclone Yasi. One thing is forsure – it will take a lot of money to get individuals(including Lions and Lioness) and whole communitiesback on track, so a donation to LCIF will certainlyassist our International Association to continue it’swork in providing support to natural disasters. And forthe sceptics – LCIF has returned more money to ourMultiple District than we have sent overseas to theFoundation!

Has there been a standout Lion, or a member of yourcommunity, who is worthy of recognition for theirefforts in leading the recovery following the cyclone?Have you considered nominating them for a MelvinJones Fellowship – the highest award that can begiven by the Foundation. For just US$1,000.00 youcan assist the Foundation in it’s work, and alsorecognise that very valuable contribution made by thatdedicated Lion, Lioness, Leo or other member of yourcommunity. And with the AUS$ on par with the US$ atpresent, now is a good time to process thatapplication. Simply send your completed application(which can be downloaded from the website – orcontact me for a copy), together with your cheque forthe Australian equivalent of US$1,000 (check with CabTreasurer Ed Morris prior re the current exchangeRate please), to Cab Treas Ed who will progress theapplication on your behalf.

Please consider, and if you need any help, I am only aphone call away.

During a recent flood in a small town, a young girl wasperched on top of a house with a little boy. As they satwatching articles float by in the water, they noticed anold hat go past.Suddenly, the hat turned and came back, then turnedaround and went downstream.
