Space - The commercial benefits of innovating in the UK

Department for International Trade (1)

The Department for International Trade (DIT) was formed in July 2016 to secure UK

and global prosperity by promoting and financing international trade and investment,

and championing free trade.

Our vision

A UK that trades its way to prosperity, stability and security.

Our mission

To help businesses export, drive investment, open up markets and champion free trade.

Responsibilities

We are an international economic department, responsible for:

• bringing together policy, promotion and financial expertise to break down barriers to

trade and investment, and help businesses succeed

• delivering a new trade policy framework for the UK as we leave the EU

• promoting British trade and investment across the world

• building the global appetite for British goods and services

APPROACH

1.Continue to develop relationships with existing major foreign space and satellite companies

already based in the UK to encourage them to deepen their presence in the UK.

2.Identify those global companies without a UK presence that could match future growth

opportunities and develop relationships through Post to encourage them to invest.

3.Identify countries with potential as sources of space investment, but where we are not

working strategically on space FDI and invest resources to help develop relationships and thus

a pipeline.

4.Develop market-specific marketing and event plans to support our FDI efforts.

Business Environment Advisory Team

BEAT team

We support the network to land FDI Projects in three ways:

• advising investors on the UK business environment including tax, finance, banking, research and development (R&D), visas and skills

• training for DIT staff to help them pitch the UK’s business environment to investors as attractive and internationally competitive

• shaping OGD policies that affect businesses, using direct investor feedback, to ensure the UK business environment remains internationally

competitive.

In 2016/17, the team received over 1,413 referrals and helped land 261 projects into the UK.
