Wusul Launches Wheelchair Access Vehicle Solutions

Launched at the Dubai International Motor Show 2015, Wusul, which means “access” or “transfer” in Arabic, is a new brand which will allow wheelchair users across the GCC to purchase

wheelchair access vehicles (WAV) directly from automotive dealers. Wusul is available for export to KSA from the UAE now and will have the vehicles in the Kingdom soon.

TaskSpotting App: Make Some MoneyTaskSpotting is a Dubai-based app that recently launched in KSA. It’s basically a fun way to make some extra money while you’re out around town.

How the App Works Users can make money by accepting to do missions on the app. Missions are as simple as checking a store display in a supermarket, filling out a survey, etc. Missions don’t take more than five minutes to complete. Once they mission is complete, the money is transferred to user’s account.How Much? Each mission pays SR 50 and app users can do up to 10 missions per day.

A CLICK to Zero Hunger

The United Nations World Food Programme (UNWFP) launched the perfect app for all those wanting to make a difference, but lacking the means. Developed by Sebastian Stricker and Bernharnd Kewatsch, ShareTheMeal allows users to feed one child for a day with only $0.50 (SR 1.88) from anywhere, anytime. After the donation is made, meals are provided by UNWFP.

Saudi Trifecta’s Gool Bas La Tgool

Saudi Trifecta, consisting of three Saudi geniuses, Lamis Almufti, Nour Binshihon and Zeinab Abulsamh, founded the new hit game launching this month, Gool Bas La Tgool, which is Arabic for Say But Don’t Say.

The board game is the local version of Taboo. The concept behind it is Al Jama’a Ahla, which translates to The Gathering is Nicer. Before the game starts, all players must put their phones in a tinboard box so they can have fun without technology.

Once the app is downloaded, users add their PayPal or bank account details to then easily donate as often as they want. Users can also track the progress of their money and its distribution through the app. While the app is currently focusing on supporting the Syrian refugee children in Jordan, it hopes to expand locations on a more global scale.

An insightful interview with one of KSA’s leading social

entrepreneurship advocates.

They say that the only constant thing in the world is change, whether that change is for the better, all depends on the choices we make.

Born and raised in Riyadh, Lujain Al Ubaid is one such Saudi whose choice was to be a vessel of change in the area of social development.

As early as her days in Najd National Schools, Al Ubaid was positively influenced by memories of her mother bringing her along for charity missions. During one of these trips, she had a chance encounter with an elderly woman named Bushra, whose warm smile and dream of building a mosque lit up her passion to make a difference. At only 16 years old, Al Ubaid led her class in raising funds for a mosque in memory of Bushra—in fact, at the end of her high school, they managed to build two.

What began as a decision to help one person achieve their dream turned into a vocation for Al Ubaid. A decade later, she is now the CEO of Tasamy for Social Entrepreneurship, a non-profit organization dedicated to establishing an ecosystem and a safe haven for social entrepreneurs in the region.

Her hard work has not gone unnoticed. She had previously been honored by King Salman for the various volunteering

Al Ubaid, who has a background in finance, diversified her knowledge by participating in the Harvard Business School Women Executive Leadership Program as well as Columbia

Business School’s Executive Education Program for Non-Profit Organizations.

The inexhaustible Al Ubaid is about to take on a new challenge in her journey. She has been selected as one of the of Acumen global fellows and will be heading to India where she will spend most of 2016, working for an education institution that helps community members

gain the skills they need for the job market.

Al Ubaid is a role model for her contemporaries not just because of the path she has chosen to take. Rather, what others can learn from her is that the mark of a true leader is the willingness to be a follower and learner in order to serve your purpose better.

What were your biggest challenges as the first Saudi female studying to become a detective?Firstly, I had a different issue since my first language is Arabic, and when I went to the US I did not speak English at all. So, I studied English and finished the program in one year, and then I started the Masters program. But, in my opinion, learning English in one year was not enough to study for a master’s degree in Criminal Justice. Since this major uses high-level vocabulary, it was difficult for me to learn the language in one year.

I could not understand everything in the classes and I had trouble understanding the school books. Moreover, I was the only Arab student at the school, I sometimes needed help to understand the assignments or the classes since my professors were treating me like the rest of the American students,

How would you describe yourself?A young Saudi woman who loves adventures and exploration and always seeks to develop her society.

What got you into the field of criminology and criminal justice?It was my childhood dream. When I was a child, my

favorite cartoon was “Detective Conan,” a detective who had a new crime every day and tried to find the right suspect through collecting

and analyzing the evidence. Because of this, I always imagined myself to

be that detective. Then when I became a teenager, I liked to read about the

analysis of characters and play brain games that were about connectivity and conclusions. So criminal justice, as a

ignoring that I am actually an international student and this is my second language.

Secondly, this major talks a lot about the international terrorism. And unfortunately, some western people have the belief that Muslims are terrorists. So, I faced some harassment from my classmates because I was the only Muslim in all my classes. Also, some of the books taught some wrong ideas about Islam and Muslims, which definitely bothered me.

However, I worked very hard to improve my language and tried as much as I could to set a good example of Muslims by treating them with the utmost courtesy. Also, I tried to fix some misconceptions about Islam by writing all my papers about the security efforts in Saudi Arabia, which show an example of the Islamic community that fights crimes and seeks a safe society. So, I thank Allah, who helped me acquire the degree under all these pressures.

You’ve paved a new way for women in Saudi Arabia, how does that make you feel? I am so proud of myself and what I have done. It is a great feeling when people tell me that I am their hero and they hope someday to do what I have done. But still I would like to achieve more in my life and leave an important mark in Saudi Arabia’s history.

What piece of advice would you give to other Saudi women passionate about this field? Fieldwork experience is important to any student because it shows the real needs of any major and how to apply the materials received in classes. So I advise all students to have internships.

What are you planning to pursue in Saudi Arabia with this degree?I hope to be a detective at The Bureau of Investigation and Public Prosecution, and at the same time I would like to teach in a university to transfer the experiences I got from the US to my society.

was crazy. I laughed it off and we both proceeded to look for the suspect.

It was very dark and quiet and the officers were walking very carefully with guns and flashlights in their hands. I was walking with them and asking myself whether this was really happening. It was just like an action movie. I was smiling the whole time!

We were looking behind trees and trash searching for the suspect, and the five officers were walking in front of me all the time to protect me. I followed closely behind them. Then I noticed movement between a trashcan, so I stopped and within a second, the suspect stood up and pointed his gun at me.

Next thing I know, I fell to the ground. One of the officers pushed me down to move me away from the suspect’s gun. The officers then arrested the suspect without any harm.

It was scary and surreal but I was still smiling. I still could not digest that I was working with police officers against criminals!

My wow moments were when I had the internship at the police department because I was actually living the fascinating moments I watched on TV.

I remember one day I went on a ride along with some police officers. They asked me to sign a paper asking me to take responsibility in case something happened to me. I signed the paper and we left the police department.

Our Mother’s House Exhibit

While rapid social change has threatened Asir’s one of a kind culture to wither, this exhibition helped preserve it. By Marya Atassi

Asir’s region of KSA has proved to become one of the country’s most outstanding areas for archeological and cultural sites. The region, namely Rijal Alma village, is home to authentic female artisans skilled in the traditional house painting.

Endangering such rare artistry, culture and tradition caught the attention of the UN and Art Jameel. Sponsored by the first and organized by the latter, in partnership with Edge of Arabia, an initiative was launched.

The initiative, Our Mother’s House, highlighted the urgent matter of cultural heritage in addition to developing women’s equal representation in the Middle East, namely Saudi Arabia.

Part of achieving the initiative’s goals, an art exhibition was launched from Nov. 16 – 27 in New York. The exhibition drew attention to and featured artwork by female artisans from the region. Along with that, two commissioned Asiri murals were showcased

to commemorate hundreds of years of tradition from the village of Rijal Alma.

While celebrating artistic production, the event also focused on the role women play in preserving the cultural identity of their communities, especially those marginalized within their societies.

The exhibited artwork acted as a shedding light to the endangered role of women within the rural areas of Saudi Arabia. The exhibition also shed light on Saudi’s bid to recognize Rijal Alma’s village as an official UNESCO World Heritage site.

Organized by the Middle East Institute (Washington DC), Nov. 20 hosted a reception and dedicated panel to the

discussion and importance of women artists in cultivating their local history. Among the speakers were: Fatima Jaber, artist, house painter and founder of Fatima Museum in Abha, and Ali Moghawi, cultural historian and member of Rijal Alma UNESCO World Heritage Bid.

Among the contributors to the event were the project advisors, including three Saudi artists Arwa Alnaemi, Ahmed Mater and Fatima Jaber; Ali Moghawi provides additional support. Another contributing artist is Jameelah Mater.

While Alnaemi’s work is known for its examination of women to larger Saudi society, Mater’s work provides expertise in the study of Islamic culture and transformation in the region. Further support was provided by Kate Seelye, Middle East Institute’s Vice President.

“There is a general misperception in the West that Saudi women play a very marginal role within their communities. “Our Mother’s House” highlights the fact that historically, in Asir province, women enjoyed a unique status as artisans who captured the community’s history and memories through their mural art. That tradition has been lost due to a variety of political and social reasons, but it’s possible that efforts such as this one will help to restore and preserve this valuable tradition.” – Kate Seelye, Vice President of Mission of KSA to the UN.

BEGINNINGSWhen I discovered that I love writing and coming up with stories, I felt that I wanted to draw the characters I have in mind on paper.

PROCESSI get into my bubble and I think about the character I’m drawing; what they look like, what their favorite color is, etc. Mixing mediums gives every project I work on extra flavor. They explain the mood and surreal thoughts, so collage, ink, watercolor, printmaking and digital are my best friends.

MAHMOUD ZAINIBorn in Makkah, raised in Jeddah, now studying in San Francisco. Instead of playing outside, I preferred, when alone, or with my relatives, to draw comics, imagine funny characters and create wondrous environments.

BEGINNINGSI believe I started drawing non-stop from the age of 5. As I grew up, my father never stopped supporting this passion of mine. I still have boxes full of old drawings and I just continued working and practicing ever since.

PROCESSIf it’s not random doodling then it’s precise structural planning. It’s all about abstracting realistic forms into their most basic shapes. Turn the head into a circle, the body into a giant triangle, the arms and legs into cylinders, and just explore all the different shapes your character can

morph into. I enjoy the simplicity of using black ink pens or calligraphy pens. When it comes to coloring I mainly use markers, crayons and pastel colors.

INSPIRATIONOne can truly find inspiration by observing the movements and shapes of all the different people and things around. Good poetry and prose are also great sources of inspiration for me, along with stories of great thinkers, spiritual leaders and intellectuals.

MESSAGE TO ASPIRING ILLUSTRATORS- Put in constant hours of practice and study. - Explore different styles and themes.

HAYA BAKHASHABA 21-year-old illustrator and senior graphic design student at Dar Al Hekma.

BEGINNINGSI’ve been drawing from a very early age. I used to doodle on everything, from pencil cases to the back of exam papers. By high school, I started keeping sketchbooks and drawing things that inspired me.

PROCESSI start with a sketch of the initial idea and then I find or take a picture for reference. I draw the outlines for everything then paint it in with watercolors or gouache. Finally, I scan and edit or enhance the image digitally if needed. My work involves a lot of mixed media from badly

developed film photos, to traditional watercolors or basic ballpoint pens.

INSPIRATIONPeople. What they do, how they interact with one another and their environment. I often find inspiration in old photographs and looking out the car window every once in a while. Of course deadlines are also a big motivator.

MESSAGE TO ASPIRING ILLUSTRATORS- Practice: The more you draw the better you get. - Improvise: Work with what you have available.

MAJDA ADDASI’m currently in my final senior semester as a Motion Graphic student at Dar Al Hekma University. I’m also a big sister. Art doesn’t chain me down or have limitations; it lets me be.

BEGINNINGSI grew up watching Disney, Cartoon Network and shows like Gummi Bears and Captain Majid. Those characters used to inspire me as a child. It wasn’t until I enrolled at Dar Al Fikr in 9th grade, that I started taking drawing seriously and working on myself.

PROCESSFirst step: Inspiration. Then I sketch, shade and create the character. If I want to, I then digitize it. I use a pencil, sketchbook, Cintique or an Intouse; those are Wacom tablets and a computer or a laptop.

Sometimes, I also like to color traditionally with markers or watercolors.

INSPIRATIONChildren inspire me the most, as well as Disney and Pixar’s characters, environments and color choices. One of my favorite artists is Danny Beck.

MESSAGE TO ASPIRING ILLUSTRATORS- Always carry a pencil and sketchbook. - Art blocks happen, don’t ever stop observing.- Have faith and ask for help when needed.

Remember Avril Lavigne’s Skater Boy song back in the day? Well, we have got you a real skater boy, Mejahed Al Jabri, who has won local and international championships and is trying to accredit the sport right here in Saudi.

Known as Jude Skate, Al Jabri has been skating for 13 years. If you ever get the chance to meet him, you will actually see the light illuminating from his eyes as he speaks of his sport.

He decided to pursue the sport after he attended a skating event in Jeddah years ago and was in awe with the talent he saw. Al Jabri even has his own custom made skates after he asked a company to

manufacture them according to taste. He is also part of a large group of skaters who have been trying to contact someone in order to build a skating park right here in the city. The group managed to get in touch with Abdul Lateef Jameel Co., who agreed to start working on the project.

While there is no weight loss magic bullet, some foods can help complement your weight loss efforts. Namely, some studies have explored a link between calcium intake and weight loss, displaying controversial results.

Supporting research has suggested that calcium intake plays a role in preventing your body from storing fat, therefore, helping you lose weight, especially from the midriff area.

Whether this proposed relationship is a fact or a myth or even a claim that needs further research, daily recommended calcium intake is associated with numerous health benefits including heart-health, lower blood pressure and keeping your bone health in check.

Anything lower than the recommended levels has shown to hamper the process of weight loss.

Have your calcium intake from dietary sources and not from supplements: The body absorbs and utilizes calcium better from food than from supplements and as studies have shown, calcium from dietary sources bring about a greater amount of weight loss. Have 3-4 servings of low fat dairy food per day: This amount meets your daily calcium needs. I Support Campaign: The anniversary’s slogan, Gadaha Wo Gdood, literally translates into “one is capable of.” There are six words that can be adopted by companies to be used on their websites, social media accounts and more to express solidarity and support with the intellectually disabled. The words are equality, awareness, rehabilitation, daring, loving and inclusion.

Help Center has been paramount in changing not only the lives of intellectually disabled children but also the Kingdom’s view of them. Over the past 30 years Help Center served more than 5,000 families of children with disabilities, graduated around 200 young adults and 70 of their graduates have been employed in suitable working environments across Jeddah.

The center hosted a variety of fun activities during the ceremony to commemorate the triumphs of its students ranging from drama to sports and games.

The anniversary also shed light on the important campaigns the center is leading:

Baboonej Lounge: This is an interactive online platform that enables parents of intellectually disabled children to discuss a wide range of topics. Experts and doctors are also going to take part in order to give more insight on subjects discussed.

The Dream Campaign: Aspires to make all the children’s dreams come true through the collective effort of staff, volunteers and donors. Dreams can be as simple as flying on a plane to cooking with a chef. All dreams have been collected by the staff and will be documented and seen via the center’s YouTube channel. One student has already attained her dream of modeling.

Today, more than 350 children are enrolled at the center and are attended to by 197 specialized professionals. The Help Center will continue guiding its students and improving society for their sake.

Come Cook With Me: Local chefs will teach children about food and the joys of cooking; inspiring them to get in the kitchen and give cooking a chance. This campagin will allow them to discover new flavors and textures, sparking a life long love of yummy food.

Dr. Samraa Suliman Child and Adult Psychiatrist at ACT Dr. Suliman sees adults and children with psychiatric disorders. Because she deals with both, she could easily pinpoint the differences between them. She elaborates, “It is more complicated to treat children because a lot of their behaviors are part of their development, so they have not been fully formed. Parents are also protective over their children so they are very hesitant about sending them in just in case they may have to receive medication. For adults, this point may be easier because they are the ones coming out of their own accord, it is their decision.” She explains how the most damaging things to a

child’s psychology are poor relationships with the family or the caregivers along with genetic factors since a history of mental disorders in the family may severely affect the young ones as well. Even though dealing with mental disorders is still budding in the Kingdom, the doctor believes there will be a great deal of progress.

Being kind is something most people inherently are, right? Well, you’d be surprised, as some people equate being kind with being weak, and so resort to hiding behind a tough exterior. The argument often used is that being kind opens you up to others taking advantage of you or using you.

While this may be the case, it is sad to know that the actions of a few people that are ungrateful or

mean can change a person’s own attitude so much so that they refrain from showing kindness to anybody. Instead of kindness being an intrinsic characteristic that everyone has, there is actually a day to encourage it called “World Kindness Day.”

To Muslims though, this should be a strange concept

as being kind is an essential part of being a Muslim, and should be practiced every day. In fact, Allah has many names and attributes, and two of these are Ar Rafeeq (The Gentle) and Al Lateef (The Most Kind). Allah mentions in the Qur’an that Muslims should be kind, but goes further on to state specifically who to be kind to.

Basically, the list above implies that we should be kind to every single human being.If we were to follow the religion of Islam properly, and emulate the actions of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), then there would be no need for world kindness day at all.

Our round trip starting and ending in Vilnius, headed for the sea and over to the UNESCO World Heritage site, the Curonian Spit before staying more or less on the coast up into Latvia, stopping at various delightful towns like Jumeira and then on to Estonia. On our return leg, we came back through the middle but avoided the roads in eastern Latvia.

City AccessDriving a camper into a busy urban area is not a good idea. Fortunately, all three capitals have ‘city’ campsites near enough to access the centers easily by public transport. WeatherStick to the summer months; not only are the Baltic states guaranteed sunshine during this period, but the days are nice and long. This is a blessing as it means you won’t all be cooped up inside your camper all the time. Though insect repellant is a must!

Baltic for Muslims At first glance the Baltic seems a strange place for Muslims, but as our special feature next month will show, the region has a fascinating Islamic history that goes back several centuries. Today though, Muslims are very much a minority with most of those that attend the mosques either converts or migrants. There

good in Lithuania and awful in Latvia away from the cities. On the plus side, the Baltic is more or less flat throughout and so you will never find yourself crawling up any steep hillsides with your camper.

Major roads are only one or two lanes and in much of Lithuania they have annoying depressions from overuse, which make controlling a camper at speed a tad tricky. As well as a ‘back-up’ paper map, it is wise to havea satellite-navigation unit.

Halal food is virtually non existent, barring exclusive spots in places like Kaunas, which also has the region›s only functioning purpose built mosque. Men and women dressing conservatively will stand out, especially in headscarves and burkas, as these are highly unusual here. However, barring the odd stare, you will not be bothered.

Useful TipsAll three nations speak their own language. English is spoken widely in the maincities and German and Russian is understood in many rural areas. The tourist office in Vilnius is extremely helpful in sourcing campervans locally and offering practical advice, as too the tourism office in Tallinn. For those who wish to meet the Baltic Muslim community, the organization Islamas Visiems is amazing and full of friendly, enthusiastic people.

Our journey to Haql, via many historic cities.

Haql was our destination and our aim was to visit as many places on the way in five days. We started our journey from Jeddah. Haql is at the edge of the Asian continent, at the coast of Gulf of Aqaba.

Across the sea, northern tip of the Gulf of Aqaba meets Taba, Egypt’s busiest border crossing with Palestine. At Haql on a good night, standing on Saudi soil, you can watch Jordan, Egypt and Palestine.

visibility. We crossed Al Wajh, another city known for fishing, by the evening. Crisscrossed hill road laid in front of us. It was past midnight when we reached Tabuk.

There are many farms in Tabuk. We visited one and came to know about modern organic farming methods. Tabuk war is well known in Islamic history. It represented the beginning of many Arab-Byzantine conflicts. We performed evening prayers at the same masjid where the Prophet (PBUH) led prayers many centuries back. It was in this same masjid, Turkish

representatives performed their prayers during the inauguration of Tabuk station of Hijaz Railway in 1907. We played football at the park adjacent to the Hijaz Railway museum.

It’s around 230 kilometers to Haql from Tabuk. You have to be there at night to enjoy the view. We left in the morning. The rock structures on both sides of the road were stunning. After traveling around 175 kilometers we reached AlSharaf and took deviation to Al Duba, a distance of around 70 kilometers.

Madaen Shuaib, the city of Prophet Shuaib, is near Al Duba. Prophet Shuaib is the grandson of Prophet Ibrahim, who is revered by all Semitic religions. Ferries and ships from the port city, Al Duba, can reach ports of Egypt in three hours. Locals call Al Duba the Pearl of the Red Sea. Prophet Musa settled in Madian where Prophet Shuaib hosted him. An ancient well related to Prophet Musa is still there. Maqna Beach, at the tip of Gulf of Aqaba, is 60 kilometers from Al Duba. We were amazed at the beautiful settings of the beach and the Sinai Mountains in the background. We enjoyed swimming in the narrow stretch of blue waters that separates Asia and Africa. The maximum width of Gulf of Aqaba is just 24 kilometers.It was past eight in the evening when we reached Haql. The red sky, blue waters, the huge shadow of Sinai Mountains in the twilight created an enchanting view.

Tabuk. Coming from Jeddah, the greenery of Yanbu Royal Commission was refreshing. The Royal Commission was established in 1975 as a planned Industrial city. With clean and well-marked roads, lush green parks and meticulously aligned streets, that planning is worth seeing. We played football on feather beds of grass, enjoyed swimming in the blue waters of Yanbu beach. Outside the neatness of Royal Commission stood the colorless Yanbu city.

Umluj, a village known for fresh seafood and pristine beaches, is 150 kilometers north of Yanbu Al Bahr. But we took a wrong turn and soon engulfed in a sand storm. We had to stop because of lack of

But people moved freely, no heavy air of an international border. We stood on the road in near darkness, looking across the sea.

Sharm Al Sheikh, Egypt’s jewel, and Palestine looked so

close. We could see the lights. The weight of history seemed to be hanging in the air. The road is about 50 meters above sea level. Children were playing at the seashore. On our return back to Tabuk, most of us were silent. Those countries, so close but so far. History as a theater, its drama, its actors might have been playing in our mind.

On the way back from Tabuk, we decided to visit Taima, an important place in old caravan route, 250 kilometers away from Tabuk. Present Taima looked like a sleepy, languid city. Bi’r al Haddaj,

extraordinary well dating back to Babylonian’s time of around 1st BC, is one of the oldest and largest in the Kingdom.

The draw wheels for bringing water using camels and ropes are still there. Taima is also one of the largest archaeological sites in the Kingdom. We arrived at the UNESCO world heritage site, Madain Saleh, by the afternoon, traveling 250 kilometers further.

Saudi Arabia is a land of prophets and civilizations. There is a huge tourism potential. The Kingdom has built good networks of roads through the deserts.

The only thing it lacks is public transports to these historical sites. And most of the visitors are in dark about the importance of these places.

HISTORIC SAUDI Al Dosrih FortAn example of Jizan’s rich history. By Mohammed Mirza

Sitting over 150 meters above ground level, this impregnable fortress is one of the last remaining examples of the region’s rich history. It is at times referred to as the Jizan Fort.

The fort dates back to the Ottoman era and was the seat of the governor of the Jizan region. It is rather small in size, covering an area measuring around 900 square meters, thus resembling more of a barracks rather than a fortress. However, again contrary to that opinion it has many rooms that are allocated for housing purposes.

Within the fort some places have been reinforced with iron. These are believed to be later editions, from a time after the Kingdom’s founding and not belonging to the Ottoman era.

Similar to other Turkish forts, The Al Dosrih Fort has four circular towers on all corners. Inside, the fort has a large courtyard that is flanked by an arched stable for horses. A pair of ladders takes one down towards an underground chamber that functioned as a cellar.

The fort is relatively impregnable due its location on one of the higher mountains on the west of Jizan. Its location allows it to overlook the sea to the west and the city below almost simultaneously.

Over the years the fort had fallen into depletion; however, it has recently been restored. The walls now carry white plaster and are reinforced with stucco stone.
